The spin-momentum locking of surface states in topological quantum materials can produce a resistance that scales linearly with magnetic and electric fields. Such a bilinear magneto-electric resistance (BMER) effect offers a completely new approach for magnetic storage and magnetic field sensing applications. The effects demonstrated so far, however, are relatively weak or for low temperatures. Strong room-temperature BMER effects have now been found in topological Dirac semimetal alpha-Sn thin films. The epitaxial alpha-Sn films were grown by sputtering on silicon substrates. They showed BMER responses that are 10^6 times larger than previously reported at room temperature and also larger than that previously reported at low temperatures. These results represent a major advance toward realistic BMER applications. The data also made possible the first characterization of the three-dimensional, Fermi-level spin texture of topological surface states in alpha-Sn.
Magnetotransport and magneto-optics experiments offer a very powerful probe for studying the physical properties of materials. Here, we investigate the second-order nonlinear magnetoconductivity of tilted type-I Weyl and multi-Weyl semimetal. In contrast to the presence of chiral anomaly in the linear response regime, we show that Weyl semimetal do not host chiral charge pumping in the nonlinear transport regime. We predict that an inversion symmetry broken and tilted Weyl semimetal can support finite longitudinal nonlinear magnetoconductivity, which is otherwise absent in untilted Weyl semime…
We report a gate-controlled transition of a semimetallic InAs/GaSb heterostructure to a topological insulator. The transition is induced by decreasing the degree of band inversion with front and back gate voltages. Temperature dependence of the longitudinal resistance peak shows the energy gap opening in the bulk region with increasing gate electric field. The suppression of bulk conduction and the transition to a topological insulator are confirmed by nonlocal resistance measurements using a dual lock-in technique, which allows us to rigorously compare the voltage distribution in the sample f…
Searching for the signature of the violation of chiral charge conservation in solids has inspired a growing passion on the magneto-transport in topological semimetals. One of the open questions is how the conductivity depends on magnetic fields in a semimetal phase when the Fermi energy crosses the Weyl nodes. Here, we study both the longitudinal and transverse magnetoconductivity of a topological Weyl semimetal near the Weyl nodes with the help of a two-node model that includes all the topological semimetal properties. In the semimetal phase, the Fermi energy crosses only the 0th Landau bands…
We solve the two-band model for the transport across a junction between a semimetal and an excitonic insulator. We analyze the current in terms of two competing terms associated with neutral excitons and charged carriers, respectively. We find a high value for the interface resistance, extremely sensitive to the junction transparency. We explore favorable systems for experimental confirmation.
We present a theory of magnetotransport phenomena related to the chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals. We show that conductivity, thermal conductivity, thermoelectric and the sound absorption coefficients exhibit strong and anisotropic magnetic field dependences. We also discuss properties of magneto-plasmons and magneto-polaritons, whose existence is entirely determined by the chiral anomaly. Finally, we discuss the conditions of applicability of the quasi-classical description of electron transport phenomena related to the chiral anomaly.
We show several distinct signatures in the magneto-response of type-II Weyl semimetals. The energy tilt tends to squeeze the Landau levels (LLs), and for a type-II Weyl node, there always exists a critical angle between the B-fileld and the tilt, at which the LL spectrum collapses, regardless of the fileld strength. Before collapse, signatures also appear in the magneto-optical spectrum, including the invariable presence of intraband peaks, the absence of absorption tails, and the special anisotropic fileld dependence.
Thus far, a detection of the Dirac or Weyl fermions in topological semimetals remains often elusive, since in these materials conventional charge carriers exist as well. Here, measuring a field-induced length change of the prototype Weyl semimetal TaAs at low temperatures, we find that its $c$-axis magnetostriction amounts to relatively large values whereas the $a$-axis magnetostriction exhibits strong variations with changing the orientation of the applied magnetic field. It is discovered that at magnetic fields above the ultra-quantum limit, the magnetostriction of TaAs contains a linear-in-…
Anisotropic magnetoresistance is the change tendency of resistance of a material on the mutual orientation of the electric current and the external magnetic field. Here, we report experimental observations in the Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 of giant anisotropic magnetoresistance and its transverse version, called the planar Hall effect. The relative anisotropic magnetoresistance is negative and up to -68% at 2 K and 10 T. The high anisotropy and the minus sign in this isotropic and nonmagnetic material are attributed to a field-dependent current along the magnetic field, which may be induced by the…
In this work we introduce a thermal magnetotorsional effect (TME) as a novel topological response in magnetic Weyl semimetals. We predict that magnetization gradients perpendicular to the Weyl node separation give rise to temperature gradients depending only on the local positions of the Weyl nodes. The TME is a consequence of magnetization-induced effective torsional spacetime geometry and the finite temperature Nieh-Yan anomaly. Similarly to anomalous Hall effect and chiral anomaly, the TME has a universal material-independent form. We predict that the TME can be observed in magnetic Weyl se…
We experimentally compare two types of interface structures with magnetic and non-magnetic Weyl semimetals. They are the junctions between a gold normal layer and magnetic Weyl semimetal Ti$_2$MnAl, and a ferromagnetic nickel layer and non-magnetic Weyl semimetal WTe$_2$, respectively. Due to the ferromagnetic side of the junction, we investigate spin-polarized transport through the Weyl semimetal surface. For both structures, we demonstrate similar current-voltage characteristics, with hysteresis at low currents and sharp peaks in differential resistance at high ones. Despite this behavior re…
A multiscale simulation approach is developed to simulate the contact transport properties between semimetal to a monolayer two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) semiconductor. The results elucidate the mechanisms for low contact resistance between semimetal and TMDC semiconductor contacts from a quantum transport perspective. The simulation results compare favorably with recent experiments. Furthermore, the results show that the contact resistance of a Bismuth-MoS2 contact can be further reduced by engineering the dielectric environment and doping the TMDC material to <1…
The phonon magnetochiral effect consists of a nonreciprocity in the velocity or attenuation of acoustic waves when they propagate parallel and antiparallel to an external magnetic field. The first experimental observation of this effect has been reported recently in a chiral magnet and ascribed to the hybridization between acoustic phonons and chiral magnons. Here, we predict a potentially measurable phonon magnetochiral effect of electronic origin in chiral Weyl semimetals. Caused by the Berry curvature and the orbital magnetic moment, this effect is enhanced for longitudinal phonons by the c…
We study electric field and temperature gradient driven magnetoconductivity of a Weyl semimetal system. To analyze the responses, we utilize the kinetic equation with semiclassical equations of motion modified by the Berry curvature and orbital magnetization of the wave-packet. Apart from known positive quadratic magnetoconductivity, we show that due to chiral anomaly, the magnetconductivity can become non-analytic function of the magnetic field, proportional to 3/2 power of the magnetic field at finite temperatures. We also show that time-reversal symmetry breaking tilt of the Dirac cones res…
Co$_2$MnGa is a ferromagnetic semimetal with Weyl nodal lines identified by ARPES. We studied electrical transport in thin Co$_2$MnGa lamellae (10 $\times$ 10 $\times$ 0.4-5 microns) cut from single-crystals using a focused ion beam. These crystals exhibit an unexpected and highly unusual planar resistance anisotropy ($\sim$10 times) with principal axes that rotate by 90 degrees between the upper and lower faces. Using symmetry arguments and simulations, we find that the observed resistance anisotropy resembles that of an isotropic conductor with anisotropic surface states that are impeded fro…
We explore theoretically the magnetoresistvity of three-dimensional Weyl and Dirac semimetals in transversal magnetic fields within two alternative models of disorder: (i) short-range impurities and (ii) charged (Coulomb) impurities. Impurity scattering is treated using the self-consistent Born approximation. We find that an unusual broadening of Landau levels leads to a variety of regimes of the resistivity scaling in the temperature-magnetic field plane. In particular, the magnetoresitance is non-monotonous for the white-noise disorder model. For $H\to 0$ the magnetoresistance for short-rang…
We theoretically investigate the transport and magnetotransport properties of three-dimensional Weyl semimetals. Using the RPA-Boltzmann transport scattering theory for electrons scattering off randomly distributed charged impurities, together with an effective medium theory to average over the resulting spatially inhomogeneous carrier density, we smoothly connect our results for the minimum conductivity near the Weyl point with known results for the conductivity at high carrier density. In the presence of a non-quantizing magnetic field, we predict that for both high and low carrier densities…
Weyl semimetals are a topological phase of matter that have drawn recent interest and have been suggested as a possible phase of the pyrochlore irridates, among other materials. Here, we compute the magneto-optical response of an isolated Weyl point. We find that the conductivity is a series of asymmetric peaks lying on top of a linear background. We find additional features in the conductivity that are explained by the underlying Landau level structure. We show that weak disorder tends to blur out the peaks, but they still show up as measurable oscillations on a linear background.
We theoretically study the band structure and the electronic transport in the Weyl semimetal nanowires in magnetic fields, and demonstrate that the interplay of the Fermi-arc surface states and the bulk Landau levels plays a crucial role in the magnetotransport. We show that a magnetic field perpendicular to the surface immediately hybridizes the counter-propagating surface modes into a series of dispersionless 0th Landau levels, and it leads to a significant reduction of the traveling modes and a rapid decay of the conductance. On the contrary, a magnetic field parallel to the wire adds linea…
We investigate the magneto-optical response of double Weyl semimetals whose energy dispersion is intrinsically anisotropic. We find that in the presence of a magnetic field, the most salient feature of the optical conductivity is a series of resonant peaks with the corresponding frequencies scaling linearly with the strength of the magnetic field. In addition, the optical conductivity is found to be anisotropic, with two of the three longitudinal components residing at a linear background and the remaining one at a constant background. The effects of chemical potential, temperature, impurity s…
Magneto-optical studies of Weyl semimetals have been proposed as a versatile tool for observing low-energy Weyl fermions in candidate materials including the chiral Landau level. However, previous theoretical results have been restricted to the linearized regime around the Weyl node and are at odds with experimental findings. Here, we derive a closed form expression for the magneto-optical conductivity of generic Weyl semimetals in the presence of an external magnetic field aligned with the tilt of the spectrum. The systems are taken to have linear dispersion in two directions, while the tilti…
Topological semimetals characterize a novel class of quantum materials hosting Dirac/Weyl fermions. The important features of topological fermions can be exhibited by quantum oscillations. Here we report the magnetoresistance and Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) quantum oscillation of longitudinal resistance in the single crystal of topological semimetal Ta3SiTe6 with the magnetic field up to 38 T. Periodic amplitude of the oscillations reveals related information about the Fermi surface. The fast Fourier transformation spectra represent a single oscillatory frequency. The analysis of the oscillations …
Magnetotransport such as the giant magnetoresistance and Hall effect lies at the heart of fundamental physics and technologies. Recently, some experiments have clearly demonstrated linear magnetotransport (LMT) proportional to magnetic field but the underlying physical mechanism is still unclear. In this work, we show that Berry curvature effect is a new mechanism dominating the LMT. The Berry-curvature-induced LMT widely exists in 66 out of 122 magnetic point groups. For typical magnetic Weyl semimetals Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ and ferromagnetic MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, Berry curvature induces LMT conductivi…
We investigate the tunneling magnetoresistance in magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) comprised of Weyl semimetal contacts. We show that chirality-magnetization locking leads to a gigantic tunneling magnetoresistance ratio, an effect that does not rely on spin filtering by the tunnel barrier. Our results indicate that the conductance in the anti-parallel configuration is more sensitive to magnetization fluctuations than in MTJs with normal ferromagnets, and predicts a TMR as large as 10^4 % when realistic magnetization fluctuations are accounted for. In addition, we show that the Fermi arc states…
The recent discovery of the quantum nonlinear Hall effect has revived the field of nonlinear transport. Here, we predict magnetic field-induced nonlinear Hall effect in time-reversal symmetric Weyl semimetal. We show that the interplay of the band geometric quantities, such as the Berry curvature, and the magnetic part of the Lorentz force can give rise to finite nonlinear Hall conductivity that is linear in the magnetic field. Such nonlinear Hall conductivity can manifest through nonlinear transport measurement as well as nonlinear optical phenomena like photocurrent and the second harmonic g…
The magnetotransport properties of disordered ferromagnetic Weyl semimetals are investigated numerically. We found an extraordinarily stable and huge magnetoresistance effect in domain walls of Weyl semimetals. This effect originates from the helicity mismatch of Weyl fermions and is a specific property of Weyl semimetals. Although conventional magnetoresistance effects are strongly suppressed in domain walls where local magnetization varies gradually, the helicity-protected magnetoresistance in Weyl semimetals maintains almost $100\%$ of the magnetoresistance ratio for any kind of thick domai…
We perform a magneto-infrared spectroscopy study of the semiconductor to semimetal transition of InAs/GaSb double quantum wells from the normal to the inverted state. We show that owing to the low carrier density of our samples (approaching the intrinsic limit), the magneto-absorption spectra evolve from a single cyclotron resonance peak in the normal state to multiple absorption peaks in the inverted state with distinct magnetic field dependence. Using an eight-band Pidgeon-Brown model, we explain all the major absorption peaks observed in our experiment. We demonstrate that the semiconductor…
We study magnetotransport in a disordered Weyl semimetal taking into account localization effects exactly. In the vicinity of a Weyl node, a single chiral Landau level coexists with a number of conventional non-chiral levels. Disorder scattering mixes these topologically different modes leading to peculiar localization effects. We derive the average conductance as well as the full distribution function of transmission probabilities along the field direction. Remarkably, we find that localization of the non-chiral modes is greatly enhanced in a strong magnetic field with the typical localizatio…
Recently, a class of Dirac semimetals, such as \textrm{Na}$_{\mathrm{3}}% $\textrm{Bi} and \textrm{Cd}$_{\mathrm{2}}$\textrm{As}$_{\mathrm{3}}$, are discovered to carry $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ monopole charges. We present an experimental mechanism to realize the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ anomaly in regard to the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ topological charges, and propose to probe it by magnetotransport measurement. In analogy to the chiral anomaly in a Weyl semimetal, the acceleration of electrons by a spin bias along the magnetic field can create a $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ charge imbalance between the Dirac points, the relaxa…
We propose a mechanism to generate a static magnetization via {\em axial magnetoelectric effect} (AMEE). Magnetization ${\bf M} \sim {\bf E}_5(ω)\times {\bf E}_5^{*}(ω)$ appears as a result of the transfer of the angular momentum of the axial electric field ${\bf E}_5(t)$ into the magnetic moment in Dirac and Weyl semimetals. We point out similarities and differences between the proposed AMEE and a conventional inverse Faraday effect (IFE). As an example, we estimated the AMEE generated by circularly polarized acoustic waves and find it to be on the scale of microgauss for gigahertz frequency …
Magnetic Weyl semimetals exhibit intriguing transport phenomena due to their non-trivial band structure. Recent experiments in bulk crystals of the shandite-type Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ have shown that this material system is a magnetic Weyl semimetal. To access the length scales relevant for chiral transport, it is mandatory to fabricate microstructures of this fascinating compound. We therefore have cut micro-ribbons (typical size $0.3~\times~3~\times~50$μ$m^3$) from Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ single crystals using a focused beam of Ga$^{2+}$-ions and investigated the impact of the sample dimensions and po…
We numerically study the three-dimensional (3D) quantum Hall effect (QHE) and magnetothermoelectric transport of Weyl semimetals in the presence of disorder. We obtain a bulk picture that the exotic 3D QHE emerges in a finite range of Fermi energy near the Weyl points determined by the gap between the $n=-1$ and $n=1$ Landau levels (LLs). The quantized Hall conductivity is attributable to the chiral zeroth LLs traversing the gap, and is robust against disorder scattering for an intermediate number of layers in the direction of the magnetic field. Moreover, we predict several interesting charac…
We study the effect of random potential created by different types of impurities on the transverse magnetoresistance of Weyl semimetals. It is shown that the magnetic field and temperature dependence of magnetoresistance is strongly affected by the type of impurity potential. Two limiting cases are analyzed in detail: ($i$) the ultra-quantum limit, when the applied magnetic field is so high that only the zeroth and first Landau levels contribute to the magnetotransport, and ($ii$) the semiclassical situation, for which a large number of Landau levels comes into play. A formal diagrammatic appr…
The disjointed Fermi-arcs in Weyl semimetals can intertwine with chiral bulk modes and participate in unusual closed magnetic orbits in the presence of a vertical magnetic field. Here we carry out the quantum oscillation study of such unusual Weyl magnetic orbits in Dirac semimetal Cd3As2, a close cousin of Weyl semimetals. We find that extra two-dimensional (2D) quantum oscillations emerge at high field, which superimpose on 3D bulk background and can be attributed to the Weyl magnetic orbits, when the thickness of nanoplates is smaller than the mean free path of the electrons. Further eviden…
We present the detailed analyses of magneto-conductivities in a Weyl semimetal within Born and self-consistent Born approximations. In the presence of the charged impurities, the linear magnetoresistance can happen when the charge carriers are mainly from the zeroth (n=0) Landau level. Interestingly, the linear magnetoresistance is very robust against the change of temperature, as long as the charge carriers mainly come from the zeroth Landau level. We denote this parameter regime as the high-field regime. On the other hand, the linear magnetoresistance disappears once the charge carriers from…
The resistance bottleneck in metal-interconnect scaling calls for new interconnect materials. This paper explores topological semimetals as a potential solution. After reviewing the desirable properties of topological semimetals for back-end-of-line (BEOL) interconnects, we use CoSi as an example to demonstrate the decreasing resistance-area product with scaling and provide material-search guidelines.
In this paper, we give a systematic theoretical study on the Landau levels (LLs) and magneto-optical conductivity Re$(σ_{αα})$ in a gapped Dirac semimetal model with mixed linear and parabolic dispersions under a magnetic field, which was recently proposed by Jiang \textit{et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf125}, 046403 (2020)] to explain the experimental magnetoinfrared spectroscopy in the three-dimensional ZrTe$_5$ crystal. We find that the strong magnetic field can drive the LLs become noninverted and thus the strong topological insulator phase in ZrTe$_5$ turns to be a trivial insulator. In the…
We theoretically study the anisotropic magnetotransport in Dirac-Weyl magnetic junctions where a doped ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal is sandwiched between doped Dirac semimetals. We calculate the conductance using the Landauer formula and find that the system exhibits extraordinarily large anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR). The AMR depends on the ratio of the Fermi energy and the strength of the exchange interaction. The origin of the AMR is the shift of the Fermi surface in the Weyl semimetal and the mechanism is completely different from the conventional AMR originating from the spin depend…
Topological nodal-line semimetals offer an interesting research platform to explore novel phenomena associated with its torus-shaped Fermi surface. Here, we study magnetotransport in the massive nodal-line semimetal with spin-orbit coupling and finite Berry curvature distribution which exists in many candidates. The magnetic field leads to a deformation of the Fermi torus through its coupling to the orbital magnetic moment, which turns out to be the main scenario of the magnetoresistivity (MR) induced by the Berry curvature effect. We show that a small deformation of the Fermi surface yields a…
We study the positive longitudinal magnetoconductivity (LMC) and planar Hall effect as emergent effects of the chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals, following a recent-developed theory by integrating the Landau quantization with Boltzmann equation. It is found that, in the weak magnetic field regime, the LMC and planar Hall conductivity (PHC) obey $\cos^{6}θ$ and $\cos^{5}θ\sin θ$ dependences on the angle $θ$ between the magnetic and electric fields. For higher magnetic fields, the LMC and PHC cross over to $\cos^{2}θ$ and $\cosθ\sinθ$ dependences, respectively. Interestingly, the PHC could exhib…
We review our recent works on the quantum transport, mainly in topological semimetals and also in topological insulators, organized according to the strength of the magnetic field. At weak magnetic fields, we explain the negative magnetoresistance in topological semimetals and topological insulators by using the semiclassical equations of motion with the nontrivial Berry curvature. We show that the negative magnetoresistance can exist without the chiral anomaly. At strong magnetic fields, we establish theories for the quantum oscillations in topological Weyl, Dirac, and nodal-line semimetals. …
Magnetocaloric effect for the topological semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ due to the antiferromagnetic coupling of the bulk and surface spin-polarized phases
Recently discovered Dirac and Weyl semimetals display unusual magnetoresistance phenomena, including a large, non-saturating, linear transverse magnetoresistance and a negative longitudinal magnetoresistance. The latter is often considered as evidence of fermions having a defined chirality. Classical mechanisms, due to disorder or non-uniform current injection, can however, also produce negative longitudinal magnetoresistance. Here, we report on magnetotransport measurements performed on epitaxial thin films of Cd3As2, a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal. Quasi-linear positive transverse magne…
We study longitudinal magnetotransport in disorder-free cylindrical Weyl semimetal nanowires. Our theory includes a magnetic flux $Φ$ piercing the nanowire and captures the finite curvature of the Fermi arc in the surface Brillouin zone through a boundary angle $α$. Electron backscattering by acoustic phonons via the deformation potential causes a finite resistivity which we evaluate by means of the semiclassical Boltzmann approach. We find that low-energy transport is dominated by surface states, where transport observables are highly sensitive to the angle $α$ and to Aharonov-Bohm phases due…
Type-II Weyl semimetals are characterized by the tilted linear dispersion in the low-energy excitations, mimicking Weyl fermions but with manifest violation of the Lorentz invariance, which has intriguing quantum transport properties. The magnetoconductivity of type-II Weyl semimetals is investigated numerically based on lattice models in parallel electric and magnetic field. We show that in the high-field regime, the sign of the magnetoconductivity of an inversion-symmetry-breaking type-II Weyl semimetals depends on the direction of the magnetic field, whereas in the weak field regime, positi…
Weyl semimetals are topological materials that provide a condensed-matter realization of the chiral anomaly. A positive longitudinal magnetoconductance quadratic in magnetic field has been promoted as a diagnostic for this anomaly. By solving the Boltzmann equation analytically, we show that the magnetoconductance can become negative in the experimentally relevant semiclassical regime of weak magnetic fields. This effect is due to the simultaneous presence of the Berry phase and the orbital magnetic moment of carriers and occurs for sufficiently strong intervalley scattering.
Weyl semimetals are three-dimensional topological states of matter, in a sense that they host paired monopoles and antimonopoles of Berry curvature in momentum space, leading to the chiral anomaly. The chiral anomaly has long been believed to give a positive magnetoconductivity or negative magnetoresistivity in strong and parallel fields. However, several recent experiments on both Weyl and Dirac topological semimetals show a negative magnetoconductivity in high fields. Here, we study the magnetoconductivity of Weyl and Dirac semimetals in the presence of short-range scattering potentials. In …
We suggest the possibility of a linear magnetochiral effect in time reversal breaking Weyl semimetals. Generically the magnetochiral effect consists in a simultaneous linear dependence of the magnetotransport coefficients with the magnetic field and a momentum vector. This simultaneous dependence is allowed by the Onsager reciprocity relations, being the separation vector between the Weyl nodes the vector that plays such role. As a side consequence, we find a non vanishing positive longitudinal magnetoconductivity at Fermi energies above the point where the chirality of the Weyl nodes is globa…
We investigate electron transport through the interface between a niobium superconductor and the edge of a two-dimensional semimetal, realized in a 20~nm wide HgTe quantum well. Experimentally, we observe that typical behavior of a single Andreev contact is complicated by both a pronounced zero-bias resistance anomaly and shallow subgap resistance oscillations with $1/n$ periodicity. These results are demonstrated to be independent of the superconducting material and should be regarded as specific to a 2D semimetal in a proximity with a superconductor. We interpret these effects to originate f…
The semiclassical transport theory is especially powerful for investigating galvanomagnetic effects. Generally, the semiclassical theory is applicable only in weak fields because it does not consider Landau quantization. Herein, we extend the conventional semiclassical theory by considering Landau quantization through the field dependence of carrier density in semimetals. The extended semiclassical theory is applicable even in strong fields, where Landau quantization is noticeable. Using this new approach, we explain the qualitative change in the angular dependence of transverse magnetoresista…
