We propose a mechanism to generate a static magnetization via {\em axial magnetoelectric effect} (AMEE). Magnetization ${\bf M} \sim {\bf E}_5(ω)\times {\bf E}_5^{*}(ω)$ appears as a result of the transfer of the angular momentum of the axial electric field ${\bf E}_5(t)$ into the magnetic moment in Dirac and Weyl semimetals. We point out similarities and differences between the proposed AMEE and a conventional inverse Faraday effect (IFE). As an example, we estimated the AMEE generated by circularly polarized acoustic waves and find it to be on the scale of microgauss for gigahertz frequency sound. In contrast to a conventional IFE, magnetization rises linearly at small frequencies and fixed sound intensity as well as demonstrates a nonmonotonic peak behavior for the AMEE. The effect provides a way to investigate unusual axial electromagnetic fields via conventional magnetometry techniques.
The magnetoelectric coupling of electrons in a three-dimensional solid can be effectively described by axion electrodynamics. Here we report the discovery of the fractional magnetoelectric effect in chiral anomalous semimetals of the three-dimensional massless Wilson fermions, which have linear dispersions at the energy crossing point, and break the chiral symmetry at generic momenta. In the presence of electric and magnetic fields, the time-reversal and parity symmetry breaking give rise to the quarter-quantized topological magnetoelectric effect, which is directly related to the winding numb…
We theoretically study the axial current $\bm{j}_5$ (defined as the difference between the charge current with opposite chirality) in doped Weyl semimetal using a Green's function technique. We show that the axial current is controlled by the magnetization dynamics in a magnetic insulator attached to a Weyl semimetal. We find that the induced axial current can be detected by using ferromagnetic resonance or the inverse spin Hall effect and can be converted into charge current with no accompanying energy loss. These properties make Weyl semimetal advantageous for application to low-consumption …
Multi-Weyl semimetals are a kind of topological phase of matter with discrete Weyl nodes characterized by multiple monopole charges, in which the chiral anomaly, the anomalous nonconservation of an axial current, occurs in the presence of electric and magnetic fields. Electronic transport properties related to the chiral anomaly in the presence of both electromagnetic fields and axial electromagnetic fields in multi-Weyl semimetals are systematically studied. It has been found that the anomalous Hall conductivity has a modification linear in the axial vector potential from inhomogeneous strain…
A space-time dependent node separation in Weyl semimetals acts as an axial vector field. Coupled with domain wall motion in magnetic Weyl semimetals, this induces axial electric and magnetic fields localized at the domain wall. We show how these fields can activate the axial (chiral) anomaly and provide a direct experimental signature of it. Specifically, a domain wall provides a spatially dependent Weyl node separation and an axial magnetic field $\textbf{B}_5$, and domain wall movement, driven by an external magnetic field, gives the Weyl node separation a time dependence, inducing an axial …
We show how the axial (chiral) anomaly induces a spin torque on the magnetization in magnetic Weyl semimetals. The anomaly produces an imbalance in left- and right-handed chirality carriers when non-orthogonal electric and magnetic fields are applied. Such imbalance generates a spin density which exerts a torque on the magnetization, the strength of which can be controlled by the intensity of the applied electric field. We show how this results in an electric control of the chirality of domain walls, as well as in an improvement of the domain wall dynamics, by delaying the onset of the Walker …
Topological Dirac and Weyl semimetals have an energy spectrum that hosts Weyl nodes appearing in pairs of opposite chirality. Topological stability is ensured when the nodes are separated in momentum space and unique spectral and transport properties follow. In this work we study the effect of a space dependent Weyl node separation, which we interpret as an emergent background axial vector potential, on the electromagnetic response and the energy spectrum of Weyl and Dirac semimetals. This situation can arise in the solid state either from inhomogeneous strain or non-uniform magnetization and …
We show that Weyl semimetals exhibit a mixed axial-torsional anomaly in the presence of axial torsion, a concept exclusive of these materials with no known natural fundamental interpretation in terms of the geometry of spacetime. This anomaly implies a nonconservation of the axial current---the difference in current of left- and right-handed chiral fermions---when the torsion of the spacetime in which the Weyl fermions move couples with opposite sign to different chiralities. The anomaly is activated by driving transverse sound waves through a Weyl semimetal with a spatially varying tilted dis…
We show that, as it happens in graphene, elastic deformations couple to the electronic degrees of freedom as pseudo gauge fields in Weyl semimetals. We derive the form of the elastic gauge fields in a tight-binding model hosting Weyl nodes and see that this vector electron-phonon coupling is chiral, providing an example of axial gauge fields in three dimensions. As an example of the new response functions that arise associated to these elastic gauge fields, we derive a non-zero phonon Hall viscosity for the neutral system at zero temperature. The axial nature of the fields provides a test of t…
In this work, we describe a toolbox to realize and probe synthetic axial gauge fields in engineered Weyl semimetals. These synthetic electromagnetic fields, which are sensitive to the chirality associated with Weyl nodes, emerge due to spatially and temporally dependent shifts of the corresponding Weyl momenta. First, we introduce two realistic models, inspired by recent cold-atom developments, which are particularly suitable for the exploration of these synthetic axial gauge fields. Second, we describe how to realize and measure the effects of such axial fields through center-of-mass observab…
Kramers Weyl semimetals are Weyl semimetals that have Weyl points pinned at the time reversal invariant momenta. Recently it has been discovered that all chiral crystals host Weyl points at time reversal invariant momenta, so metals with chiral lattice symmetry all belong to the category of Kramers Weyl semimetals. In this work, we show that due to the chiral lattice symmetry, Kramers Weyl semimetals have the unique longitudinal magnetoelectric effect in which the charge current induced spin and orbital magnetization is parallel to the direction of the current. This feature allows Kramers Weyl…
We investigate electrical transport in a three-dimensional massless Dirac fermion model that describes a Dirac semimetal state realized in topological materials. We derive a set of interdependent diffusion equations with eight local degrees of freedom, including the electric charge density and the spin density, that respond to an external electric field. By solving the diffusion equations for a system with a boundary, we demonstrate that a spin Hall effect with spin accumulation occurs even though the conventional spin current operator is zero. The Noether current associated with chiral symmet…
We show that an electric field applied to a strained topological Dirac semimetal, such as Na3Bi and Cd3As2, induces a spin Hall current that is quadratic in the electric field. By regarding the strain as an effective "axial magnetic field" for the Dirac electrons, we investigate the electron and spin transport semiclassically in terms of the chiral kinetic theory. The nonlinear spin Hall effect arises as the cross effect between the regular Hall effect driven by the axial magnetic field and the anomalous Hall effect coming from the momentum-space topology. It provides an efficient way to gener…
We show that a strained wire of a Weyl semimetal supports a new type of gapless excitation, the chiral sound wave (CSW). It is a longitudinal charge density wave analog to the chiral magnetic wave predicted in the quark-gluon plasma but driven by an elastic axial pseudo-magnetic field. It involves the axial-axial-axial contribution to the chiral anomaly which couples the chiral charge density to the elastic axial gauge field. The chiral sound is unidirectional: it propagates along the elastic magnetic field and not in the opposite direction. The CSW may propagate for long distances as it does …
In magnetic Weyl semimetals, where magnetism breaks time-reversal symmetry, large magnetically sensitive anomalous transport responses are anticipated that could be useful for topological spintronics. The identification of new magnetic Weyl semimetals is therefore in high demand, particularly since in these systems Weyl node configurations may be easily modified using magnetic fields. Here we explore experimentally the magnetic semimetal PrAlGe, and unveil a direct correspondence between easy-axis Pr ferromagnetism and anomalous Hall and Nernst effects. With sizes of both the anomalous Hall co…
We theoretically study electrical responses of magnetization in Weyl semimetals. The Weyl semimetal is a new class of topological semimetals, possessing hedgehog type spin textures in momentum space. Because of this peculiar spin texture, an interplay of electron transport and spin dynamics might provide new method to electrical control of magnetization. In this paper, we consider the magnetically doped Weyl semimetals, and systematically study current- and charge-induced spin torque exerted on the local magnetization in three-dimensional Dirac-Weyl metals. We determine all current-induced spi…
Magnetotransport provides key experimental signatures in Weyl semimetals. The longitudinal magnetoresistance is linked to the chiral anomaly and the transversal magnetoresistance to the dominant charge relaxation mechanism. Axial magnetic fields that act with opposite sign on opposite chiralities facilitate new transport experiments that probe the low-energy Weyl nodes. As recently realized, these axial fields can be achieved by straining samples or adding inhomogeneities to them. Here, we identify a robust signature of axial magnetic fields: an anomalous scaling of the conductance in the diff…
We derive the expression of the abelian axial anomaly in the so-called multi-Weyl and triple-point crossing semimetals. No simplifying restrictions are assumed on the symmetry of the spectrum. Three different computation methods are considered: the perturbative quantum field theory procedure which is based on the evaluation of the one-loop Feynman diagrams, the Nielsen-Ninomiya method, and the Atiyah-Singer index argument. It is shown that the functional form of the axial anomaly does not depend on the Lorentz symmetry, but it is determined by the gauge structure group. We discuss the stabilit…
While quantum anomalies are often associated with the breaking of a classical symmetry in the quantum theory, their anomalous contributions to observables remain distinct and well-defined even when the symmetry is broken from the outset. This paper explores such anomalous contributions to the current, originating from the axial anomaly in a Weyl semimetal, and in the presence of a generic Weyl node-mixing term. We find that apart from the familiar anomalous divergence of the axial current proportional to a product of electric and magnetic fields, there is another anomalous term proportional to…
Torsional strain in Weyl semimetals excites a unidirectional chiral density wave propagating in the direction of the torsional vector. This gapless excitation, named the chiral sound wave, is generated by a particular realization of the axial anomaly via the triple-axial (AAA) anomalous diagram. We show that the presence of the torsion-generated chiral sound leads to a linear behavior of the specific heat of a Weyl semimetal and to an enhancement of the thermal conductivty at experimentally accessible temperatures. We also demonstrate that such an elastic twist lowers the temperature of the sa…
Weyl semimetals are materials where electrons behave effectively as a kind of massless relativistic particles known asWeyl fermions. These particles occur in two flavours, or chiralities, and are subject to quantum anomalies, the breaking of a conservation law by quantum fluctuations. For instance, the number of Weyl fermions of each chirality is not independently conserved in parallel electric and magnetic field, a phenomenon known as the chiral anomaly. In addition, an underlying curved spacetime provides a distinct contribution to a chiral imbalance, an effect known as the mixed axial-gravi…
We present a theory of thermoelectric transport in weakly disordered Weyl semimetals where the electron-electron scattering time is faster than the electron-impurity scattering time. Our hydrodynamic theory consists of relativistic fluids at each Weyl node, coupled together by perturbatively small inter-valley scattering, and long-range Coulomb interactions. The conductivity matrix of our theory is Onsager reciprocal and positive-semidefinite. In addition to the usual axial anomaly, we account for the effects of a distinct, axial-gravitational anomaly expected to be present in Weyl semimetals.…
Parallel electric and magnetic fields applied to Weyl semimetals pump axial charge via the axial anomaly until balanced by intervalley relaxation. The resulting nonequilibrium steady state exhibits the chiral magnetic effect as well as the anomalous Hall effect, which coupled with Maxwell's equations leads to unstable electromagnetic waves at low frequency and long wavelength. Here, we show that such chiral magnetic instability manifests itself as anomalous reflectance of the surface of pumped Weyl semimetal. Depending on electric, chiral magnetic, and anomalous Hall conductivities, the reflec…
Lattice deformations act on the low-energy excitations of Dirac materials as effective axial vector fields. This allows to directly detect quantum anomalies of Dirac materials via the response to axial gauge fields. We investigate the parity anomaly in Dirac nodal line semimetals induced by lattice vibrations, and establish a topological piezoelectric effect; i.e., periodic lattice deformations generate topological Hall currents that are transverse to the deformation field. The currents induced by this piezoelectric effect are dissipationless and their magnitude is completely determined by the…
Weyl semimetals exhibit exotic Fermi-arc surface states, which strongly affect their electromagnetic properties. We derive analytical expressions for all components of the composite density-spin response tensor for the surfaces states of a Weyl-semimetal model obtained by closing the band gap in a topological insulating state and introducing a time-reversal-symmetry-breaking term. Based on the results, we discuss the electromagnetic susceptibilities, the current response, and other physical effects arising from the density-spin response. We find a magnetoelectric effect caused solely by the Fe…
Using the path integral formulation in Euclidean space, we extended the calculation of the abelian chiral anomalies in the case of Lorentz violating theories by considering a new fermionic correction term provided by the standard model extension, which arises in the continuous Hamiltonian of a weakly tilted Weyl semimetal, and whose cones have opposite tilting. We found that this anomaly is insensitive to the tilting parameter, retaining its well-known covariant form. This independence on the Lorentz violating parameters is consistent with other findings reported in the literature. The initial…
Weyl semimetals are predicted to realize the three-dimensional axial anomaly first discussed in particle physics. The anomaly leads to unusual transport phenomena such as the chiral magnetic effect in which an applied magnetic field induces a current parallel to the field. Here we investigate diagnostics of the axial anomaly based on the fundamental equations of axion electrodynamics. We find that materials with Weyl nodes of opposite chirality and finite energy separation immersed in a uniform magnetic field exhibit an anomaly-induced oscillatory magnetic field with a period set by the chemic…
Berry curvature acts analogous to a magnetic field in the momentum-space, and it modifies the flow of charge carriers and entropy. This induces several intriguing magnetoelectric and magnetothermal transport phenomena in Weyl semimetals. %, including the planar Hall and planar Nernst effect. Here, we explore the impact of the Berry curvature and orbital magnetization on the thermopower in tilted type-I and type-II Weyl semimetals, using semiclassical Boltzmann transport formalism. We analytically calculate the full magnetoconductivity matrix and use it to obtain the thermopower matrix for diff…
The dualities that map hard-to-solve, interacting theories to free, non-interacting ones often trigger a deeper understanding of the systems to which they apply. However, simplifying assumptions such as Lorentz invariance, low dimensionality, or the absence of axial gauge fields, limit their application to a broad class of systems, including topological semimetals. Here we derive several axial field theory dualities in 2+1 and 3+1 dimensions by developing an axial slave-rotor approach capable of accounting for the axial anomaly. Our 2+1-dimensional duality suggests the existence of a dual, cri…

The dislocation in Dirac semimetal carries an emergent magnetic flux parallel to the dislocation axis. We show that due to the emergent magnetic field the dislocation accommodates a single fermion massless mode of the corresponding low-energy one-particle Hamiltonian. The mode is propagating along the dislocation with its spin directed parallel to the dislocation axis. In agreement with the chiral anomaly observed in Dirac semimetals, an external electric field results in the spectral flow of the one-particle Hamiltonian, in pumping of the fermionic quasiparticles out from the vacuum, and in c…
Weyl nodes in three-dimensional Weyl semimetals break the Liouville equation, leading to the Liouville anomaly. Here we present a new approach to derive the semiclassical action and equations of motion for Weyl fermions in the presence of electromagnetic fields and torsions from the quantum field theory: combining the Wigner transformation with band projection operation. It has been shown that the Liouville anomaly, including a new pure torsion anomaly term, a mixing term between the electromagnetic fields and torsions as well as the conventional chiral anomaly, entirely differs from the count…
Topological states of quantum matter have attracted great attention in condensed matter physics and materials science. The study of time-reversal-invariant (TRI) topological states in quantum materials has made tremendous progress in both theories and experiments. As a great success, thousands of TRI topological materials are predicted through sweeping search. Richer exotic phenomena are expected to appear in magnetic topological materials because of varied magnetic configurations, but this study falls much behind due to the complex magnetic structures and transitions. Here, we predict the tet…
We consider two semi-infinite magnetoelectric media with constant dielectric permittivity separated by a planar interface, whose electromagnetic response is described by non-dynamical axion electrodynamics and investigate the radiation of a point-like electric dipole located perpendicularly to the interface. We start from the exact Green's function for the electromagnetic potential, whose far-field approximation is obtained using a modified steepest descent approximation. This procedure yields the standard spherical waves as well as axially symmetric cylindrical superficial waves, which nevert…
The axial magnetic effect, i.e., the generation of an energy current parallel to an axial magnetic field coupling with opposite signs to left- and right-handed fermions is a non-dissipative transport phenomenon intimately related to the gravitational contribution to the axial anomaly. An axial magnetic field emerges naturally in condensed matter in the so called Weyl semi-metals. We present a measurable implementation of the axial magnetic effect. We show that the edge states of a Weyl semimetal at finite temperature possess a temperature dependent angular momentum in the direction of the vect…
The axial magnetic effect (AME) is one of the anomalous transport phenomena in which the energy current is induced by an axial magnetic field. Here, we numerically study the AME for the relativistic Wilson fermion in the axial magnetic field and a twisted Dirac semimetal. The AME current density inside the bulk is nonzero, and particularly in the low-energy regime for the former model, it is explained by the field-theoretical results without any fitting parameter. However, for both models, the average AME current density vanishes owing to the surface contribution. The axial gauge field is rega…
We argue that strain applied to a time-reversal and inversion breaking Weyl semi-metal in a magnetic field can induce an electric current via the chiral magnetic effect. A tight binding model is used to show that strain generically changes the locations in the Brillouin zone but also the energies of the band touching points (tips of the Weyl cones). Since axial charge in a Weyl semi-metal can relax via inter-valley scattering processes the induced current will decay with a timescale given by the lifetime of a chiral quasiparticle. We estimate the strength and lifetime of the current for typica…
In this work, Dirac fermions have been obtained and engineered in one-dimensional (1D) zigzag phosphorus nanotubes (ZPNTs). We have performed a comprehensive first-principle computational study of the electronic properties of ZPNTs with various diameters. The results indicate that as the lattice parameter (Lc) along axial direction increases, ZPNTs undergo transitions from metal to semimetal and semimetal to semiconductor, whereas Dirac fermions appear at Lc ranging from 3.90Å to 4.10Å. In particular, a field effect transistor (FET) based on a 12-ZPNT (with 12 unit cells in transverse directio…
Being motivated by applications to the physics of Weyl semimetals we study spectral geometry of Dirac operator with an abelian gauge field and an axial vector field. We impose chiral bag boundary conditions with variable chiral phase $θ$ on the fermions. We establish main properties of the spectral functions which ensure applicability of the $ζ$ function regularization and of the usual heat kernel formulae for chiral and parity anomalies. We develop computational methods, including a perturbation expansion for the heat kernel. We show that the terms in both anomalies which include electromagne…
Weyl semimetals (WSM) are a new class of topological materials that exhibit a bulk Hall effect due to time-reversal symmetry breaking, as well as a chiral magnetic effect due to inversion symmetry breaking. These unusual electromagnetic responses can be characterized by an axion term $θ\textbf{E} \cdot \textbf{B}$ with space and time dependent axion angle $θ(\textbf{r} ,t)$. In this paper we compute the electromagnetic fields produced by an electric charge near to a topological Weyl semimetal with two Weyl nodes in the bulk Brillouin zone. We find that, as in ordinary metals and dielectrics, o…
We analyze the effect of the tilt on the transverse thermoelectric coefficient of Weyl semimetals in the \emph{conformal} limit, i.e., zero temperature and zero chemical potential. Using the Kubo formalism, we find a nonmonotonic behavior of the thermoelectric conductivity as a function of the tilt perpendicular to the magnetic field, and a linear behavior when the tilt is aligned to the magnetic field. An ``axial Nernst" current (chiral currents counter propagating perpendicularly to the magnetic field and the temperature gradient) is generated in inversion symmetric Weyl materials when the t…
We study the quantum phase diagram of a three dimensional non-interacting Dirac semimetal in the presence of either quenched axial or scalar potential disorder, by calculating the average and the typical density of states as well as the inverse participation ratio using numerically exact methods. We show that as a function of the disorder strength a half-filled (i.e. undoped) Dirac semimetal displays three distinct ground states, namely an incompressible semimetal, a compressible diffusive metal, and a localized Anderson insulator, in stark contrast to a conventional dirty metal that only supp…
We propose the new nondissipative transport effect - the appearance of axial current of thermal quasiparticles in the presence of background gravity with torsion. For the non-interacting model of massless Dirac fermions the response of the axial current to torsion is derived. The chiral vortical effect appears to be the particular case of the chiral torsional effect. The proposed effect may be observed in the condensed matter systems with emergent relativistic invariance (Weyl/Dirac semimetals and the $^3$He-A superfluid).
