The axial magnetic effect (AME) is one of the anomalous transport phenomena in which the energy current is induced by an axial magnetic field. Here, we numerically study the AME for the relativistic Wilson fermion in the axial magnetic field and a twisted Dirac semimetal. The AME current density inside the bulk is nonzero, and particularly in the low-energy regime for the former model, it is explained by the field-theoretical results without any fitting parameter. However, for both models, the average AME current density vanishes owing to the surface contribution. The axial gauge field is regarded as the spatially modulated (effective) Zeeman field and induces the spatially modulated energy magnetization. The AME is attributed to the magnetization energy current and hence cannot be observed in transport experiments.
We theoretically study the axial current $\bm{j}_5$ (defined as the difference between the charge current with opposite chirality) in doped Weyl semimetal using a Green's function technique. We show that the axial current is controlled by the magnetization dynamics in a magnetic insulator attached to a Weyl semimetal. We find that the induced axial current can be detected by using ferromagnetic resonance or the inverse spin Hall effect and can be converted into charge current with no accompanying energy loss. These properties make Weyl semimetal advantageous for application to low-consumption …
We report experimental studies of spin-wave excitations in individual 22 nm thick Ni80Fe20 nanotubes with diameters of about 150 nm by means of Brillouin light-scattering (BLS) spectroscopy. Irradiated by microwaves we resolve sets of discrete resonances in the center of nanotubes ranging from 2.5 to 12.5 GHz. Comparing to a recent theoretical work and micromagnetic simulations, we identify different characteristic eigenmodes depending on the axial, mixed or vortex configuration. The mixed and vortex states give rise to modes with helical phase profiles substantiating an unusual nature of mode…
We propose a mechanism to generate a static magnetization via {\em axial magnetoelectric effect} (AMEE). Magnetization ${\bf M} \sim {\bf E}_5(ω)\times {\bf E}_5^{*}(ω)$ appears as a result of the transfer of the angular momentum of the axial electric field ${\bf E}_5(t)$ into the magnetic moment in Dirac and Weyl semimetals. We point out similarities and differences between the proposed AMEE and a conventional inverse Faraday effect (IFE). As an example, we estimated the AMEE generated by circularly polarized acoustic waves and find it to be on the scale of microgauss for gigahertz frequency …
The axial magnetic effect, i.e., the generation of an energy current parallel to an axial magnetic field coupling with opposite signs to left- and right-handed fermions is a non-dissipative transport phenomenon intimately related to the gravitational contribution to the axial anomaly. An axial magnetic field emerges naturally in condensed matter in the so called Weyl semi-metals. We present a measurable implementation of the axial magnetic effect. We show that the edge states of a Weyl semimetal at finite temperature possess a temperature dependent angular momentum in the direction of the vect…
The transport properties of massless fermions in $3+1$ spacetime dimension have been in the focus of recent theoretical and experimental research. New transport properties appear as consequences of chiral anomalies. The most prominent is the generation of a current in a magnetic field, the so-called chiral magnetic effect leading to an enhancement of the electric conductivity (negative magnetoresistivity). We study the analogous effect for axial magnetic fields that couple with opposite signs to fermions of different chirality. We emphasize local charge conservation and study the induced magne…
We show how the axial (chiral) anomaly induces a spin torque on the magnetization in magnetic Weyl semimetals. The anomaly produces an imbalance in left- and right-handed chirality carriers when non-orthogonal electric and magnetic fields are applied. Such imbalance generates a spin density which exerts a torque on the magnetization, the strength of which can be controlled by the intensity of the applied electric field. We show how this results in an electric control of the chirality of domain walls, as well as in an improvement of the domain wall dynamics, by delaying the onset of the Walker …
In this work, thermal and magnetic properties for an electron with cylindrical confinement in presence of external electric and magnetic fields have been investigated. We found that the corresponding time-independent Schrödinger equation can be separated into the product of the radially symmetric and an axial equation. Moreover, we have obtained a quasi-exact expression for the energy spectrum of the system in terms of the exact solutions for the radial equation and an approximation up to first order for the axial equation. We have calculated the well-known thermal and magnetic properties as t…
The axial magnetic field, which couples to left- and right-handed fermions with opposite signs, may generate an equilibrium dissipationless energy flow of fermions in the direction of the field even in the presence of interactions. We report on numerical observation of this Axial Magnetic Effect in quenched SU(2) lattice gauge theory. We find that in the deconfinement (plasma) phase the energy flow grows linearly with the increase of the strength of the axial magnetic field. In the confinement (hadron) phase the Axial Magnetic Effect is absent. Our study indirectly confirms the existence of th…
Magnetization measurements of a truly axial symmetry Mn12-tBuAc molecular nanomagnet with a spin ground state of S = 10 show resonance tunneling. This compound has the same magnetic anisotropy as Mn12-Ac but the molecules are better isolated and the crystals have less disorder and a higher symmetry. Hysteresis loop measurements at several temperatures reveal a well-resolved step fine-structure which is due to level crossings of excited states. All step positions can be modeled by a simple spin Hamiltonian. The crossover between thermally assisted and pure quantum tunneling can be investigated …
A space-time dependent node separation in Weyl semimetals acts as an axial vector field. Coupled with domain wall motion in magnetic Weyl semimetals, this induces axial electric and magnetic fields localized at the domain wall. We show how these fields can activate the axial (chiral) anomaly and provide a direct experimental signature of it. Specifically, a domain wall provides a spatially dependent Weyl node separation and an axial magnetic field $\textbf{B}_5$, and domain wall movement, driven by an external magnetic field, gives the Weyl node separation a time dependence, inducing an axial …
We studied the current-induced magnetization dynamics of a domain wall confined in a magnetic wire with bi-axial anisotropy. We showed that above the threshold current density, breathing-mode excitation, where the thickness of the domain wall oscillates, is induced by spin-transfer torque. We found that the breathing-mode can be applied as a source of microwave oscillation because the resistance of the domain wall is a function of the domain wall thickness. In a current sweep simulation, the frequency of the breathing-mode exhibits hysteresis because of the confinement.
The chemical potential of a quantum dot parabolically confining one or two electrons is studied in an axial magnetic field. The number of electrons in the dot is given by combination between the chemical potentials of the dots and leads. The equilibrium-charge diagram of the dot is obtained in the phase space determined by the magnetic field and the lead voltage. The influence of the magnetic field on the electron number and the electron transport is discussed. The dependence of the electron number on the magnetic fields and the lead voltage is clear at a glance in the equilibrium-charge diagr…
We have studied the time evolution of magnetization of a high spin magnetic cluster in the ground state, in the presence of a sinusoidal axial magnetic field and a static transverse field by explicitly solving time dependent schrödinger equation. We observe oscillations of magnetization in the plateau region which has all the characteristics reminiscent of the oscillation of probability of occupation of a state in a two level lattice in the presence of an oscillating electric field. The high spin of the ground state leads to a large but finite two-level pseudo-lattice. The oscillations in magn…
By comparing the photo-induced magnetization dynamics in simple layered systems we show how light-induced modifications of the magnetic anisotropy directly enhance the magnetization. It is observed that the spin precession in (CH3NH3)2CuCl4, initiated by a light pulse, increases in amplitude at the critical temperature TC. The phenomenon is related to the dependence of the critical temperature on the axial magnetic anisotropy. The present results underline the possibility and the importance of the optical modifications of the anisotropy, opening new paths toward the control of the magnetizatio…
Magnetization of nanoparticles of NiO are measured and analyzed taking into account a distribution in particle magnetic moment. We find that disregarding this distribution in the analysis is the reason for the many anomalous observations reported on this system in the literature.
In the absence of dissipation a non-rotating magnetic nanoparticle can be stably levitated in a static magnetic field as a consequence of the spin origin of its magnetization. Here we study the effects of dissipation on the stability of the system, considering the interaction with the background gas and the intrinsic Gilbert damping of magnetization dynamics. At large applied magnetic fields we identify magnetization switching induced by Gilbert damping as the key limiting factor for stable levitation. At low applied magnetic fields and for small particle dimensions magnetization switching is …
We use spin-density-functional theory within an envelope function approach to calculate electronic states in a GaAs/InAs core-shell nanowire pierced by an axial magnetic field. Our fully 3D quantum modeling includes explicitly the description of the realistic cross-section and composition of the sample, and the electrostatic field induced by external gates in two different device geometries, gate-all-around and back-gate. At low magnetic fields, we investigate Aharonov-Bohm oscillations and signatures therein of the discrete symmetry of the electronic system, and we critically analyze recent m…
The orbital magnetization of the electron gas on a two-dimensional kagome lattice under a perpendicular magnetic field is theoretically investigated. The interplay between the lattice geometry and magnetic field induce nontrivial $k$-space Chern invariant in the magnetic Brillouin zone, which turns to result in profound effects on the magnetization properties. We show that the Berry-phase term in the magnetization gives a paramagnetic contribution, while the conventional term brought about by the magnetic response of the magnetic Bloch bands produces a diamagnetic contribution. As a result, th…
Based on the micromagnetic simulations the magnetization switching in a triangle magnetic element by voltage-control of magnetic anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction under in-plane magnetic field is proposed. The proposed switching scheme is not the toggle switching but the deterministic switching where the magnetic state is determined by the polarity of the applied voltage pulse. The mechanism and conditions for the switching are clarified. The results provide a fast and low-power writing method for magnetoresistive random access memories.
Using a sensitive DC torque magnetometer we measure the orbital magnetization by sweeping the density at fixed magnetic fields on GaAs-AlGaAs heterostructures. At low temperatures strong nonequilibrium magnetization signals dominate the data. In literature the observation of nonequilibrium signals are often associated with eddy currents generated by sweeping the magnetic field. The elimination of a changing magnetic field then poses a question regarding the origin of these signals. Our data suggests another source of nonequilibrium magnetization potentially due to the change of area occupied b…
(Et4N)3Fe2F9 exhibits a butterfly--shaped hysteresis below 5 K when the magnetic field is parallel to the threefold axis, in accordance with a very slow magnetization relaxation in the timescale of minutes. This is attributed to an energy barrier Delta=2.40 K resulting from the S=5 dimer ground state of [Fe2F9]^{3-} and a negative axial anisotropy. The relaxation partly occurs via thermally assisted quantum tunneling. These features of a single-molecule magnet are observable at temperatures comparable to the barrier height, due to an extremely inefficient energy exchange between the spin syste…
The reversal of a uniform axial magnetization in a ferromagnetic nanotube (FNT) has been predicted to nucleate and propagate through vortex domains forming at the ends. In dynamic cantilever magnetometry measurements of individual FNTs, we identify the entry of these vortices as a function of applied magnetic field and show that they mark the nucleation of magnetization reversal. We find that the entry field depends sensitively on the angle between the end surface of the FNT and the applied field. Micromagnetic simulations substantiate the experimental results and highlight the importance of t…
We theoretically study electrical responses of magnetization in Weyl semimetals. The Weyl semimetal is a new class of topological semimetals, possessing hedgehog type spin textures in momentum space. Because of this peculiar spin texture, an interplay of electron transport and spin dynamics might provide new method to electrical control of magnetization. In this paper, we consider the magnetically doped Weyl semimetals, and systematically study current- and charge-induced spin torque exerted on the local magnetization in three-dimensional Dirac-Weyl metals. We determine all current-induced spi…
We experimentally study magnetization dynamics in magnetic tunnel junctions driven by femtosecond-laser-induced surface acoustic waves. The acoustic pulses induce a magnetization precession in the free layer of the magnetic tunnel junction through magnetoelastic coupling. The frequency and amplitude of the precession shows a pronounced dependence on the applied magnetic field and the laser excitation position. Comparing the acoustic-wave-induced precession frequencies with precession induced by charge currents and with micromagnetic simulations we identify spatially non-uniform magnetization m…
A mechanism of current-induced magnetization reversal based on the parametric resonance is described. The source of the magnetization reversal is a current-induced magnetic field, which is applied perpendicularly to the easy axis of magnetic anisotropy of a ferromagnetic nanomagnet. The current-induced magnetic field was measured in a FeCoB nanomagnet to be 60 Gauss at a current density of 65 mA/um2. Two mechanisms of the magnetization reversal are described and calculated. The first mechanism is the reversal by a RF electrical current, which modulated at a frequency close to the precession fr…
We investigate the magnetization reversal of single-domain magnetic nanoparticle driven by linear down-chirp microwave magnetic field pulse. Numerical simulations based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation reveal that solely down-chirp pulse is capable of inducing subnanosecond magnetization reversal. With a certain range of initial frequency and chirp rate, the required field amplitude is much smaller than that of constant-frequency microwave field. The fast reversal is because the down-chirp microwave field acts as an energy source and sink for the magnetic particle before and after cross…
We theoretically investigate spin current and magnetic response induced by the twisting phonon mode in carbon nanotubes via the spin-rotation coupling. An effective magnetic field due to the twisting mode induces both spin and orbital magnetizations. The induced spin and orbital magnetizations have both radial and axial components. We show that ac pure spin current is generated by the twisting phonon mode. The magnitude of the spin current and orbital magnetization for a (10,10) armchair nanotube is estimated as an example. We find that the ac pure spin current is detectable in magnitude when …
The symmetry of single-molecule magnets dictates their spin quantum dynamics, influencing how such systems relax via quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM). By reducing a system's symmetry, through the application of a magnetic field or uniaxial pressure, these dynamics can be modified. We report measurements of the magnetization dynamics of a crystalline sample of the high-symmetry [Mn12O12(O2CMe)16(MeOH)4]MeOH single-molecule magnet as a function of uniaxial pressure applied either parallel or perpendicular to the sample's "easy" magnetization axis. At temperatures between 1.8 and 3.3 K, m…
We report on the nonlinear magnetization dynamics of a HoFeO3 crystal induced by a strong terahertz magnetic field resonantly enhanced with a split ring resonator and measured with magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy. The terahertz magnetic field induces a large change (~40%) in the spontaneous magnetization. The frequency of the antiferromagnetic resonance decreases in proportion to the square of the magnetization change. A modified Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation with a phenomenological nonlinear damping term quantitatively reproduced the nonlinear dynamics.
Topological insulator (TI) nanowires in proximity with conventional superconductors have been proposed as a tunable platform to realize topological superconductivity and Majorana zero modes (MZM). The tuning is done using an axial magnetic flux $Φ$ which allows transforming the system from trivial at $Φ=0$ to topologically nontrivial when half a magnetic flux quantum $Φ_0/2$ threads the wire's cross-section. Here we explore the expected topological transition in TI-wire-based Josephson junctions as a function of magnetic flux by probing the $4π$-periodic fraction of the supercurrent, which is …
Squared cobalt thin layers of different thickness and width were investigated by numerical simulations. Using zero-valued externally applied magnetic field (geometry driven regime) and different initial conditions the magnetization dynamics were examined. The wavelet-based spectral analysis was applied. Transient states of different types were identified.
We show that the dynamic magnetization at the edges of a thin magnetic element with finite lateral size can be described by new effective boundary conditions that take into account inhomogeneous demagnetizing fields near the element edges. These fields play a dominant role in the effective pinning of the dynamic magnetization at the boundaries of mesoscopic and nano-sized magnetic elements. The derived effective boundary conditions generalize well-known Rado-Weertman boundary conditions and are reduced to them in the limiting case of a very thin magnetic element.
The low temperature relaxation of the magnetization in magnetic molecular solids such as Fe$_8$ is studied using Monte Carlo simulations. A set of rate equations is developed to understand the simulations, and the results are compared. The simulations show that the magnetization of an initially saturated samples deviates as a square-root in time at short times, as observed experimentally, and this law is derived from the rate equations analytically.
There is so far no clear-cut experimental analysis that can determine whether dipole-dipole interactions enhance or reduce the blocking temperature $T_{B}$ of nanoparticle assemblies. It seems that the samples play a central role in the problem and therefore, their geometry should most likely be the key factor in this issue. Yet, in a previous work, Jönsson and Garcia-Palacios did investigate theoretically this problem in a weak-interaction limit and without the presence of an external DC field. Based on symmetry arguments they reached the conclusion that the variation of the relaxation rate i…
Transport and non-equilibrium magnetization in monolayers of magnetic molecules subject to a bias voltage are considered. We apply a master-equation approach going beyond the sequential-tunneling approximation to study the Coulomb-blockade regime. While the current is very small in this case, the magnetization shows changes of the order of the saturation magnetization for small variations of the bias voltage. Inelastic cotunneling processes manifest themselves as differential-conductance steps, which are accompanied by much larger changes in the magnetization. In addition, the magnetization in…
Electric-field control of magnetization dynamics is fundamentally and technologically important for future spintronic devices. Here, based on electric-field control of both magnetic anisotropy and spin--orbit torque, two distinct methods are presented for switching the magnetization in topological insulator (TI)/magnetic-TI hybrid systems. The magnetic anisotropy energy in magnetic TIs is formulated analytically as a function of the Fermi energy, and it is confirmed that the out-of-plane magnetization is always favored for the partially occupied surface band. Also proposed is a transistor-like…
A comprehensive study of anisotropic quantum rings, QRs, subject to axial and in-plane magnetic field, both aligned and transverse to the anisotropy direction, is carried out. Elliptical QRs for a wide range of eccentricity values and also perfectly circular QRs including one or more barriers disturbing persistent QR current are considered. These models mimic anisotropic geometry deformations and mass diffusion occuring in the QR fabrication process. Symmetry considerations and simplified analytical models supply physical insight into the obtained numerical results. Our study demonstrates that…
