Although heralding signals in quantum optics experiments are typically based on the detection of exactly one photon, it has recently been theoretically shown that heralding based on the detection of zero photons can be useful in a number of quantum information applications. Here we describe an experimental technique for "heralding on zero photons" using conventional single-photon detectors and time-tagging methods. We find that detector efficiency and dark count rates play a counterintuitive role in the ability to accurately detect zero photons, and demonstrate these effects in an experiment that involves heralding on zero photons in the well-known Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer.
When implementing O-band quantum key distribution on optical fiber transmission lines carrying C-band data traffic, noise photons that arise from spontaneous Raman scattering or insufficient filtering of the classical data channels could cause the quantum bit-error rate to exceed the security threshold. In this case, a photon heralding scheme may be used to reject the uncorrelated noise photons in order to restore the quantum bit-error rate to a low level. However, the secure key rate would suffer unless one uses a heralded photon source with sufficiently high heralding rate and heralding effi…
We present an efficient way of heralding photonic qubit signals using linear optics devices. First we show that one can obtain asymptotically perfect heralding and unit success probability with growing resources. Second, we show that even using finite resources, we can improve qualitatively and quantitatively over earlier heralding results. In the latte r scenario, we can obtain perfect heralded photonic qubits while maintaining a finite success probability. We demonstrate the advantage of our heralding scheme by predicting key rates for device independent quantum key distribution, taking impe…
Photon pairs produced by parametric down-conversion or four-wave mixing can interfere with each other in multiport interferometers, or carry entanglement between distant nodes for use in entanglement swapping. This requires the photons be spectrally pure to ensure good interference, and have high heralding efficiency to know accurately the number of photons involved and to maintain high rates as the number of photons grows. Spectral filtering is often used to remove noise and define spectral properties. For heralded single photons high purity and heralding efficiency is possible by filtering t…
We consider photon heralding with quasi-number-resolving detection schemes and account for detection efficiencies and dark count probabilities. With a straightforward formalism, we develop closed-form expressions for the heralding probability, photon number distribution of the resulting heralded state, and fidelity of this heralded state to a single photon state. We calculate that, on the basis of optimizing this fidelity, due to the presence of dark counts there is a maximum number of detection modes worth multiplexing for each combination of efficiency and dark count probability.
A major obstacle to a practical, heralded source of single photons is the fundamental trade-off between high heralding efficiency and high production rate. To overcome this difficulty, we propose applying sequential spectral and temporal filtering on the signal photons before they are detected for heralding. Based on a multimode theory that takes into account the effect of simultaneous multiple photon-pair emission, we find that these filters can be optimized to yield both a high heralding efficiency and a high production rate. While the optimization conditions vary depending on the underlying…
We report on the realization of a synchronous source of heralded single photons at telecom wavelengths with MHz heralding rates and high heralding efficiency. This source is based on the generation of photon pairs at 810 and 1550 nm via Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversion (SPDC) in a 1 cm periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystal pumped by a 532 nm pulsed laser. As high rates are fundamental for multi-photon experiments, we show that single telecom photons can be announced at 4.4MHz rate with 45% heralding efficiency. When we focus only on the optimization of the coupling of the her…
We experimentally study a fiber-based three-stage nonlinear interferometer and demonstrate its application in generating heralded single photons with high efficiency and purity by spectral engineering. We obtain a heralding efficiency of 90% at a brightness of 0.039 photons/pulse. The purity of the source is checked by two-photon Hong-Ou-Mandel interference with a visibility of 95%+-6% (after correcting Raman scattering and multi-pair events). Our investigation indicates that the heralded source of single photons produced by the three-stage nonlinear interferometer has the advantages of high p…
Single photons are an important prerequisite for a broad spectrum of quantum optical applications. We experimentally demonstrate a heralded single-photon source based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion in collinear bulk optics, and fiber-coupled bolometric transition-edge sensors. Without correcting for background, losses, or detection inefficiencies, we measure an overall heralding efficiency of 83 %. By violating a Bell inequality, we confirm the single-photon character and high-quality entanglement of our heralded single photons which, in combination with the high heralding efficienc…
We explore the feasibility of using high conversion-efficiency periodically-poled crystals to produce photon pairs for photon-counting detector calibrations at 1550 nm. The goal is the development of an appropriate parametric down-conversion (PDC) source at telecom wavelengths meeting the requirements of high-efficiency pair production and collection in single spectral and spatial modes (single-mode fibers). We propose a protocol to optimize the photon collection, noise levels and the uncertainty evaluation. This study ties together the results of our efforts to model the single-mode heralding…
Evolving photonic quantum technologies and applications require higher and higher rates of single photon generation. In parallel, it is required that these generated photons are kept spectrally pure for multi-photon experiments and that multi-photon noise be kept to a minimum. In spontaneous parametric down-conversion sources, these requirements are conflicting, because spectral filtering to increase spectral purity always means lowering the rate at which photons are generated, and increasing the pump power means increasing the multi-photon noise. In this paper, we present a scheme, called ext…
We describe an experiment in which photon pairs from a pulsed parametric down-conversion source were coupled into single-mode fibers. Detecting one of the photons heralded the presence of the other photon in its fiber with a probability of 83%. The heralded photons were then used in a simple multi-photon interference experiment to illustrate their potential for quantum information applications.
We present serial-parallel conversion for a heralded single photon source (heralded SPS). We theoretically show that with the heralding signal, the serial-parallel converter can route a stream of n photons to n different spatial modes more efficiently than is the case without using a heralding signal. We also experimentally demonstrate serial-parallel conversion for two photons generated from a heralded SPS. We achieve a conversion efficiency of 0.533 \pm 0.003, which exceeds the maximum achievable efficiency of 0.5 for serial-parallel conversion using unheralded photons, and is double the eff…
Recent efforts to produce single photons via heralding have relied on creating spectrally factorable two-photon states in order to achieve both high purity and high production rate. Through a careful multimode analysis, we find, however, that spectral factorability is not necessary. Utilizing single-mode detection, a similar or better performance can be achieved with non-factorable states. This conclusion rides on the fact that even when using a broadband filter, a single-mode measurement can still be realized, as long as the coherence time of the triggering photons exceeds the measurement win…
We investigate the possibility of generating pure heralded single photons through spontaneous parametric down-conversion comparing the counter-propagating geometry studied in [1] with more conventional co-propagating configurations which enhance the purity of the heralded photon state through the technique of group-velocity matching. We estimate the Schmidt number associated to the temporal modes as a function of the pump pulse duration for three particular configurations, showing how the different phase-matching conditions influences the degree of separability that can be achieved.
Single-photons play an important role in emerging quantum technologies and information processing. An efficient generation technique consists in preparing such states via a conditional measurement on photon-number correlated beams: the detection of a single-photon on one of the beam can herald the generation of a single-photon state on the other one. Such scheme strongly depends on the heralding detector properties, such as its quantum efficiency, noise or photon-number resolution ability. These parameters affect the preparation rate and the fidelity of the generated state. After reviewing the…
We investigate different strategies suitable to generate pure heralded single photons through spontaneous parametric down-conversion, comparing the counter-propagating geometry studied in [1] with more conventional co-propagating configurations which enhance the purity of the heralded photon state through the technique of group-velocity matching. Our analysis is based on the correlation of twin photons in the temporal domain,a non-standard approach that provides a physical view of the mechanisms that permit to eliminate the temporal entanglement of the state and to generate high-purity heralde…
Multi-photon interference is central to photonic quantum information processing and quantum simulation, usually requiring multiple sources of non-classical light followed by a unitary transformation on their modes. Here, we observe interference in the four-photon events generated by a single silicon waveguide, where the different modes are six frequency channels. Rather than requiring a unitary transformation, the frequency correlations of the source are configured such that photons are generated in superposition states across multiple channels, and interference effects can be seen without fur…
Entanglement is a unique property of quantum systems and an essential resource for many quantum technologies. The ability to transfer or swap entanglement between systems is an important protocol in quantum information science. Entanglement between photons forms the basis of distributed quantum networks and the demonstration of photonic entanglement swapping is essential for their realization. Here an experiment demonstrating entanglement swapping from two independent multimode time-frequency entangled sources is presented, resulting in multiple heralded temporal-mode Bell states. Entanglement…
Multiphoton heralding generates large-amplitude squeezed Schrödinger cat states and parity-selective Fock superpositions from squeezed vacuum via an OPA
Generation of heralded single photons has recently been demonstrated using spontaneous four-wave mixing in integrated microresonators. While the results of coincidence measurements on the generated photon pairs from these systems show promise for their utility in heralding applications, such measurements do not reveal all of the effects of photon losses within the resonator. These effects, which include a significant degradation of the heralding efficiency, depend strongly on the relative strengths of the coupling of the ring modes to loss modes and channel modes. We show that the common choic…
Linear optical quantum Fredkin gate can be applied to quantum computing and quantum multi-user communication network. In the existing linear optical scheme, two single photon detectors (SPDs) are used to heralding the success of the quantum Fredkin gate while they have no photon count. But analysis results show that for non-perfect SPD the lower the detector efficiency, the higher the heralded success rate by this scheme. We propose an improved linear optical quantum Fredkin gate by designing a new heralding scheme with an auxiliary qubit and only one SPD, in which the higher the detection eff…
We address the design of optimal heralding schemes in linear optical quantum computing context. The problem admits unit fidelity formulation in relevant Fock space, thanks to linear optic feasibility criteria of [Phys. Rev. A100, 022301; arXiv:1901.06178]. Corresponding solution methodology is presented. As an application we inspect optimality of a few known schemes of Bell states generation. It is shown that in case of six modes and two ancillary photons success rate 2/27 is suboptimal.
We study the single-photon transport in a single-mode waveguide, in which two-level atoms in spatial superpositions are embedded. We find that the transmission of the photon can be used as a non-destructive probe for coherence of the superposition. The protocol proposed is shown to be independent of the distance between the wells in which the atoms are trapped. Furthermore, we show that by looking at the transmission in a suitable regime, a maximally entangled state can be post-selected from an unknown superposition.
We study the generation of single-photon pulses with the tailored temporal shape via nonlocal spectral filtering. A shaped photon is heralded from a time-energy entangled photon pair upon spectral filtering and time-resolved detection of its entangled counterpart. We show that the temporal shape of the heralded photon is defined by the time-inverted impulse response of the spectral filter and does not depend on the heralding instant. Thus one can avoid post-selection of particular heralding instants and achieve substantially higher heralding rate of shaped photons as compared to the generation…
We report on a systematic experimental study of heralding efficiency and generation rate of telecom-band infrared photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion and coupled to single mode optical fibers. We define the correlated-mode coupling efficiency--an inherent source efficiency--and explain its relation to heralding efficiency. For our experiment, we developed a reconfigurable computer controlled pump-beam and collection-mode optical apparatus which we used to measure the generation rate and correlated-mode coupling efficiency. The use of low-noise, high-efficiency supe…
Generating quantum entanglement is not only an important scientific endeavor, but will be essential to realizing quantum-enhanced technologies, in particular, quantum-enhanced measurements with precision beyond classical limits. We investigate the heralded generation of multiphoton entanglement for quantum metrology using a reconfigurable integrated waveguide device in which projective measurement of auxiliary photons heralds the generation of path-entangled states. We use four and six-photon inputs, to analyze the heralding process of two- and four-photon NOON states-a superposition of N phot…
Conditional preparation is a well-established technique for quantum state engineering of light. A general trend is to increase the number of heralding detection events in such realization to reach larger photon-number states or their arbitrary superpositions. In contrast to pulsed implementations, where detections only occur within the pulse window, for continuous-wave light the temporal separation of the conditioning detections is an additional degree of freedom and a critical parameter. Based on the theoretical study by A.E.B. Nielsen and K. Molmer and on a continuous-wave two-mode squeezed …
Efficient, high rate photon sources with high single photon purity are essential ingredients for quantum technologies. Single photon sources based on solid state emitters such as quantum dots are very advantageous for integrated photonic circuits, but they can suffer from a high two-photon emission probability, which in cases of non-cryogenic environment cannot be spectrally filtered. Here we propose two temporal purification-by-heralding methods for using a two photon emission process to yield highly pure and efficient single photon emission, bypassing the inherent problem of spectrally overl…
The realization of an ultra-fast source of heralded single photons emitted at the wavelength of 1540 nm is reported. The presented strategy is based on state-of-the-art telecom technology, combined with off-the-shelf fiber components and waveguide non-linear stages pumped by a 10 GHz repetition rate laser. The single photons are heralded at a rate as high as 2.1 MHz with a heralding efficiency of 42%. Single photon character of the source is inferred by measuring the second-order autocorrelation function. For the highest heralding rate, a value as low as 0.023 is found. This not only proves ne…
Heralded spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) has become the mainstay for single-photon state preparation in present-day photonics experiments. Because they are heralded, in principle one knows when a single photon has been prepared. However, the heralding efficiencies in experimentally realistic SPDC sources are typically very low. To overcome this, multiplexing techniques have been proposed which employ a bank of SPDC sources in parallel, and route successfully heralded photons to the output, thereby effectively boosting the heralding efficiency. However, running a large bank of ind…
We transmitted O-band heralded photons over 10 km of optical fiber in a proof-of-concept experiment demonstrating the feasibility of using heralded photons to improve the noise tolerance of quantum key distribution. In our experiment, the optical fiber channel was corrupted by noise photons to the extent that if we had used an attenuated laser as the photon source, a photon signal-to-noise ratio of < 4.0 at the receiver, corresponding to a quantum bit-error rate of > 10.0%, would have prevented the effective generation of secure keys. Using a photon heralding scheme, the photon signal-to-noise…
We analyze theoretically performance of four-state quantum key distribution protocols implemented with a realistic heralded single-photon source. The analysis assumes a noisy model for the detector heralding generation of individual photons via spontaneous parametric down-conversion, including dark counts and imperfect photon number resolution. We identify characteristics of the heralding detector that defines the attainable cryptographic key rate and the maximum secure distance. Approximate analytical formulas are applied to multiplexed detection and compared with results of numerical calcula…
Integrated photonics is a powerful contender in the race for a fault-tolerant quantum computer, claiming to be a platform capable of scaling to the necessary number of qubits. This necessitates the use of high-quality quantum states, which we create here using an all-around high-performing photon source on an integrated photonics platform. We use a photonic molecule architecture and broadband directional couplers to protect against fabrication tolerances and ensure reliable operation. As a result, we simultaneously measure a spectral purity of $99.1 \pm 0.1$ %, a pair generation rate of $4.4 \…

A technique for conditionally creating single- or multimode photon-number states is analyzed using Bayesian theory. We consider the heralded N-photon states created from the photons produced by an unseeded optical parametric amplifier when the heralding detector is the time-multiplexed photon-number-resolving detector recently demonstrated by Fitch, et al. [Phys. Rev. A 68, 043814 (2003).] and simultaneously by Achilles, et al. [Opt. Lett. 28, 2387 (2003).]. We find that even with significant loss in the heralding detector, fields with sub-Poissonian photon-number distributions can be created.…
We prepare heralded single photons from a photon pair source based on non-degenerate four-wave mixing in a cold atomic ensemble via a cascade decay scheme. Their statistics shows strong antibunching with g(2)(0) < 0.03, indicating a near single photon character. In an optical homodyne experiment, we directly measure the temporal envelope of these photons and find, depending on the heralding scheme, an exponentially decaying or rising profile. The rising envelope will be useful for efficient interaction between single photons and microscopic systems like single atoms and molecules. At the same …
We report the implementation of a high-rate source of single and two-photon states. By combining the advantages of short pulses and cavities, heralding rates up to 250kHz with 88% fidelity have been obtained for the single photons as well as 800Hz with 82% fidelity for the two-photon states. Furthermore, we developed a setup where the homodyne measurement is conditioned by the heralding of the quantum states, enabling the detection of most of the heralded events. This allows a faster characterization of the photon source leading to an increase in the fidelities up to 91% and 88% respectively f…
We consider conditional photonic non-Gaussian state preparation using multimode Gaussian states and photon-number-resolving detectors in the presence of photon loss. While simulation of such state preparation is often computationally challenging, we show that obtaining the required multimode Gaussian state Fock matrix elements can be reduced to the computation of matrix functions known as loop hafnians, and develop a tailored algorithm for their calculation that is faster than previously known methods. As an example of its utility, we use our algorithm to explore the loss parameter space for t…
The ideal photon-pair source for building up multi-qubit states needs to produce indistinguishable photons with high efficiency. Indistinguishability is crucial for minimising errors in two-photon interference, central to building larger states, while high heralding rates will be needed to overcome unfavourable loss scaling. Domain engineering in parametric down-conversion sources negates the need for lossy spectral filtering allowing one to satisfy these conditions inherently within the source design. Here, we present a telecom-wavelength parametric down-conversion photon source that operates…
We report on the generation of an indistinguishable heralded single-photon state, using highly nondegenerate spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC). Spectrally factorable photon pairs can be generated by incorporating a broadband pump pulse and a group-velocity matching (GVM) condition in a periodically-poled potassium titanyl phosphate (PPKTP) crystal. The heralding photon is in the near IR, close to the peak detection efficiency of off-the-shelf Si single-photon detectors; meanwhile, the heralded photon is in the telecom L-band where fiber losses are at a minimum. We observe spectral f…
The generation and manipulation of hybrid entanglement of light involving discrete- and continuous-variable states have recently appeared as essential resources towards the realization of heterogeneous quantum networks. Here we investigate a scheme for the remote generation of hybrid entanglement between particle-like and wave-like optical qubits based on a non-local heralding photon detection. We also extend this scheme with additional local or non-local detections. An additional local heralding allows the resulting state to exhibit a higher fidelity with the targeted entangled qubits while a…
We report on a source of heralded narrowband (3MHz) single photons compatible with solid-state spin-wave quantum memories based on praseodymium doped crystals. Widely non-degenerate narrow-band photon pairs are generated using cavity enhanced down conversion. One photon from the pair is at telecom wavelengths and serves as heralding signal, while the heralded single photon is at 606nm, resonant with an optical transition in Pr:YSO. The source offers a heralding efficiency of 28% and a generation rate exceeding 2000 pairs/mW in a single-mode. The single photon nature of the heralded field is co…
We present a detailed study on the properties of single photons generated by spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) when both the spectral and spatial degrees of freedom are controlled by means of filters. Our results show that it is possible to obtain pure heralded single photons with high heralding efficiency despite the use of filters. Moreover, we report an asymmetry on the single photon properties exhibited in type-II SPDC sources that depends on choosing the signal or the idler photon as the heralding one.
Device-independent quantum key distribution protocols allow two honest users to establish a secret key with minimal levels of trust on the provider, as security is proven without any assumption on the inner working of the devices used for the distribution. Unfortunately, the implementation of these protocols is challenging, as it requires the observation of a large Bell-inequality violation between the two distant users. Here, we introduce novel photonic protocols for device-independent quantum key distribution exploiting single-photon sources and heralding-type architectures. The heralding pr…
Future ground-based quantum information networks will likely use single photons transmitted through optical fibers to entangle individual network nodes. To extend communication distances and overcome limitations due to photon absorption in fibers the concept of quantum repeaters has been proposed. For that purpose, it is required to achieve quantum correlations between the material nodes and photons at telecom wavelengths which can be sent over long distances in optical fibers. Here we demonstrate non-classical correlation between a frequency converted telecom C-band photon and a spin-wave sto…
