Within this article, we develop a residual type a posteriori error estimator for a time discrete quasi-static phase-field fracture model. Particular emphasize is given to the robustness of the error estimator for the variational inequality governing the phase-field evolution with respect to the phase-field regularization parameter $ε$. The article concludes with numerical examples highlighting the performance of the proposed a posteriori error estimators on three standard test cases; the single edge notched tension and shear test as well as the L-shaped panel test.
In this manuscript, the phase-field fracture irreversibility constraint is transformed into an equality-based constraint using the slack variable approach. The equality-based fracture irreversibility constraint is then introduced in the phase-field fracture energy functional using the Lagrange Multiplier Method and the Penalty method. Both methods are variationally consistent with the conventional variational inequality phase-field fracture problem, unlike the history-variable approach. Thereafter, numerical experiments are carried out on benchmark problems in brittle and quasi-brittle fractur…
In this work, we consider adaptive mesh refinement for a monolithic phase-field description for fractures in brittle materials. Our approach is based on an a posteriori error estimator for the phase-field variational inequality realizing the fracture irreversibility constraint. The key goal is the development of a reliable and efficient residual-type error estimator for the phase-field fracture model in each time-step. Based on this error estimator, error indicators for local mesh adaptivity are extracted. The proposed estimator is based on a technique known for singularly perturbed equations …

The governing equations of the variational approach to brittle and ductile fracture emerge from the minimization of a non-convex energy functional subject to irreversibility constraints. This results in a multifield problem governed by a mechanical balance equation and evolution equations for the internal variables. While the balance equation is subject to kinematic admissibility of the displacement field, the evolution equations for the internal variables are subject to irreversibility conditions, and take the form of variational inequalities, which are typically solved in a relaxed or penali…
The phase-field model for fracture, despite its popularity and ease of implementation comes with its set of computational challenges. They are the non-convex energy functional, variational inequality due to fracture irreversibility, the need for extremely fine meshes to resolve the fracture. In this manuscript, the focus is on the numerical treatment of variational inequality. In this context, the popular history-variable approach suffers from variationally inconsistency and non-quantifiable nature of the error introduced. A better alternative, the penalisation approach, has the potential to r…
Mixed-dimensional elliptic equations exhibiting a hierarchical structure are commonly used to model problems with high aspect ratio inclusions, such as flow in fractured porous media. We derive general abstract estimates based on the theory of functional a posteriori error estimates, for which guaranteed upper bounds for the primal and dual variables and two-sided bounds for the primal-dual pair are obtained. We improve on the abstract results obtained with the functional approach by proposing four different ways of estimating the residual errors based on the extent the approximate solution ha…
In this paper, we propose a novel adaptive finite element method for an elliptic equation with line Dirac delta functions as a source term. We first study the well-posedness and global regularity of the solution in the whole domain. Instead of regularizing the singular source term and using the classical residual-based a posteriori error estimator, we propose a novel a posteriori estimator based on an equivalent transmission problem with zero source term and nonzero flux jumps on line fractures. The transmission problem is defined in the same domain as the original problem excluding on line fr…
This work presents a new adaptive approach for the numerical simulation of a phase-field model for fractures in nearly incompressible solids. In order to cope with locking effects, we use a recently proposed mixed form where we have a hydro-static pressure as additional unknown besides the displacement field and the phase-field variable. To fulfill the fracture irreversibility constraint, we consider a formulation as a variational inequality in the phase-field variable. For adaptive mesh refinement, we use a recently developed residual-type a posteriori error estimator for the phase-field vari…
In this work, we consider fracture propagation in nearly incompressible and (fully) incompressible materials using a phase-field formulation. We use a mixed form of the elasticity equation to overcome volume locking effects and develop a robust, nonlinear and linear solver scheme and preconditioner for the resulting system. The coupled variational inequality system, which is solved monolithically, consists of three unknowns: displacements, pressure, and phase-field. Nonlinearities due to coupling, constitutive laws, and crack irreversibility are solved using a combined Newton algorithm for the…
The purpose of this work is the development of space-time discretization schemes for phase-field optimal control problems. First, a time discretization of the forward problem is derived using a discontinuous Galerkin formulation. Here, a challenge is to include regularization termsand the crack irreversibility constraint. The optimal control setting is formulated by means of the Lagrangian approach from which the primal part, adjoint, tangent and adjoint Hessian are derived. Herein the overall Newton algorithm is based on a reduced approach by eliminating the state constraint. From the low-ord…
Modeling flows in fractured porous media is important in applications. One main challenge in numerical simulation is that the flow is strongly influenced by the fractures, so that the solutions typically contain complex features, which require high computational grid resolutions. Instead of using uniformly fine mesh, a more computationally efficient adaptively refined mesh is desirable. In this paper we design and analyze a novel residual-type a posteriori error estimator for staggered DG methods on general polygonal meshes for Darcy flows in fractured porous media. The method can handle fairl…

The purpose of this work is the development of space-time discretization schemes for phase-field optimal control problems. Specifically in the optimal control minimization problem, a tracking-type cost functional is minimized to steer the crack via the phase-field variable into a desired pattern. To achieve such optimal solutions, Neumann type boundary conditions need to be determined. First, a time discretization of the forward problem is derived using a discontinuous Galerkin formulation. Here, a challenge is to include regularization terms and the crack irreversibility constraint. The optim…

We propose and analyze an augmented mixed finite element method for the pseudostress-velocity formulation of the stationary convective Brinkman-Forchheimer problem in $\mathrm{R}^d$, $d\in \{2,3\}$. Since the convective and Forchheimer terms forces the velocity to live in a smaller space than usual, we augment the variational formulation with suitable Galerkin type terms. The resulting augmented scheme is written equivalently as a fixed point equation, so that the well-known Schauder and Banach theorems, combined with the Lax-Milgram theorem, allow to prove the unique solvability of the contin…
