For any rank-one convex projective manifold with a compact convex core, we prove that there exists a unique probability measure of maximal entropy on the set of unit tangent vectors whose geodesic is contained in the convex core, and that it is mixing. We use this to establish asymptotics for the number of closed geodesics. In order to construct the measure of maximal entropy, we develop a theory of Patterson--Sullivan densities for general rank-one convex projective manifolds. In particular, we establish a Hopf--Tsuji--Sullivan--Roblin dichotomy, and prove that, when it is finite, the measure on the unit tangent bundle induced by a Patterson--Sullivan density is mixing under the action of the geodesic flow.
We prove that for a relatively hyperbolic group G there is a sequence of relatively hyperbolic proper quotients such that their growth rates converge to the growth rate of G. Under natural assumptions, the same conclusion holds for the critical exponent of a cusp-uniform action of G on a hyperbolic metric space. As a corollary, we obtain that the critical exponent of a torsion-free geometrically finite Kleinian group can be arbitrarily approximated by those of quotient groups. This resolves a question of Dal'bo-Peigné-Picaud-Sambusetti. Our approach is based on the study of Patterson-Sullivan …
Basing upon the recent development of the Patterson-Sullivan measures with a Hölder continuous nonzero potential function, we use tools of both dynamics of geodesic flows and geometric properties of negatively curved manifolds to present a new formula illustrating the relation between the exponential decay rate of Patterson-Sullivan measures with a Hölder continuous potential function and the corresponding critical exponent.
Let $Γ$ be some discrete subgroup of $\mathbf{SO}^o(n+1,\mathbf{R})$ with finite Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure. We study the dynamics of the Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure with respect to closed connected subspaces of the $N$ component in some Iwasawa decomposition $\mathbf{SO}^o(n+1,\mathbf{R})=KAN$. We also study the dimension of projected Patterson-Sullivan measures along some fixed small circle.
We consider several (related) notions of geometric regularity in the context of limit sets of geometrically finite Kleinian groups and associated Patterson-Sullivan measures. We begin by computing the upper and lower regularity dimensions of the Patterson-Sullivan measure, which involves controlling the relative measure of concentric balls. We then compute the Assouad and lower dimensions of the limit set, which involves controlling local doubling properties. Unlike the Hausdorff, packing, and box-counting dimensions, we show that the Assouad and lower dimensions are not necessarily given by t…
We provide a new proof of a theorem whose proof was sketched by Sullivan ('82), namely that if the Poincaré exponent of a geometrically finite Kleinian group $G$ is strictly between its minimal and maximal cusp ranks, then the Patterson--Sullivan measure of $G$ is not proportional to the Hausdorff or packing measure of any gauge function. This disproves a conjecture of Stratmann ('97, '06).
The Patterson-Sullivan construction is proved almost surely to recover every harmonic function in a certain Banach space from its values on the zero set of a Gaussian analytic function on the disk. The argument relies on the slow growth of variance for linear statistics of the concerned point process. As a corollary of reconstruction result in general abstract setting, Patterson-Sullivan reconstruction of harmonic functions is obtained in real and complex hyperbolic spaces of arbitrary dimension.
In this article, we consider the geodesic flow on a compact rank $1$ Riemannian manifold $M$ without focal points, whose universal cover is denoted by $X$. On the ideal boundary $X(\infty)$ of $X$, we show the existence and uniqueness of the Busemann density, which is realized via the Patterson-Sullivan measure. Based on the the Patterson-Sullivan measure, we show that the geodesic flow on $M$ has a unique invariant measure of maximal entropy. We also obtain the asymptotic growth rate of the volume of geodesic spheres in $X$ and the growth rate of the number of closed geodesics on $M$. These r…
Let $Γ'<Γ$ be two discrete groups acting properly by isometries on a Gromov-hyperbolic space $X$. We prove that their critical exponents coincide if and only if $Γ'$ is co-amenable in $Γ$, under the assumption that the action of $Γ$ on $X$ is strongly positively recurrent, i.e. has a growth gap at infinity. This generalizes all previously known results on this question, which required either $X$ to be the real hyperbolic space and $Γ$ geometrically finite, or $X$ Gromov hyperbolic and $Γ$ cocompact. This result is optimal: we provide several counterexamples when the action is not strongly posi…
Let $Γ$ be a Zariski dense Kleinian Schottky subgroup of PSL2(C). Let $Λ(Γ)$ be its limit set, endowed with a Patterson-Sullivan measure $μ$ supported on $Λ(Γ)$. We show that the Fourier transform $\widehatμ(ξ)$ enjoys polynomial decay as $\vert ξ\vert$ goes to infinity. This is a PSL2(C) version of the result of Bourgain-Dyatlov [8], and uses the decay of exponential sums based on Bourgain-Gamburd sum-product estimate on C. These bounds on exponential sums require a delicate non-concentration hypothesis which is proved using some representation theory and regularity estimates for stationary m…
We establish (some directions) of a Ledrappier correspondence between Hölder cocycles, Patterson-Sullivan measures, etc for word-hyperbolic groups with metric-Anosov Mineyev flow. We then study Patterson-Sullivan measures for $θ$-Anosov representations over a local field and show that these are parametrized by the $θ$-critical hypersurface of the representation. We use these Patterson-Sullivan measures to establish a dichotomy concerning directions in the interior of the $θ$-limit cone of the representation in question: if $u$ is such a half-line, then the subset of $u$-conical limit points ha…
We study extreme values of group-indexed stable random fields for discrete groups $G$ acting geometrically on spaces $X$ in the following cases: 1) $G$ acts freely, properly discontinuously by isometries on a CAT(-1) space $X$, 2) $G$ is a lattice in a higher rank Lie group, acting on a symmetric space $X$, 3) $G$ is the mapping class group of a surface acting on its Teichmuller space. The connection between extreme values and the geometric action is mediated by the action of the group $G$ on its limit set equipped with the Patterson-Sullivan measure. Based on motivation from extreme value the…
We relate two types of phase space distributions associated to eigenfunctions $ϕ_{ir_j}$ of the Laplacian on a compact hyperbolic surface $X_Γ$: (1) Wigner distributions $\int_{S^*\X} a dW_{ir_j}=< Op(a)ϕ_{ir_j}, ϕ_{ir_j}>_{L^2(\X)}$, which arise in quantum chaos. They are invariant under the wave group. (2) Patterson-Sullivan distributions $PS_{ir_j}$, which are the residues of the dynamical zeta-functions $\lcal(s; a): = \sum_γ\frac{e^{-sL_γ}}{1-e^{-L_γ}} \int_{γ_0} a$ (where the sum runs over closed geodesics) at the poles $s = {1/2} + ir_j$. They are invariant under the geodesic flow. We p…
Let $Γ$ be a discrete group acting by isometries on a product $X=X_1\times X_2$ of Hadamard spaces. We further require that $X_1$, $X_2$ are locally compact and $Γ$ contains two elements projecting to a pair of independent rank one isometries in each factor. Apart from discrete groups acting by isometries on a product of CAT(-1)-spaces, the probably most interesting examples of such groups are Kac-Moody groups over finite fields acting on the Davis complex of their associated twin building. In a previous article we showed that the regular geometric limit set $\Lim$ splits as a product $F_Γ\tim…
We construct Patterson-Sullivan measure and a natural metric on the unit space of a hyperbolic groupoid. In particular, this gives a new approach to defining SRB measures on Smale spaces using Gromov hyperbolic graphs.
We prove effective equidistribution of horospherical flows in $\operatorname{SO}(n,1)^\circ / Γ$ when $Γ$ is geometrically finite and the frame flow is exponentially mixing for the Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure. We also discuss settings in which such an exponential mixing result is known to hold. As part of the proof, we show that the Patterson-Sullivan measure satisfies some friendly-like properties when $Γ$ is geometrically finite.
We extend the theory of Patterson-Sullivan measure to any regular covering of a compact manifold using the Busemann compactification and derive an integral formula for the volume entropy. As applications we prove some rigidity theorems for the volume entropy.
We show that dynamical and counting results characteristic of negatively-curved Riemannian geometry, or more generally CAT($-1$) or rank-one CAT($0$) spaces, also hold for rank-one properly convex projective structures, equipped with their Hilbert metrics, admitting finite Sullivan measures built from appropriate conformal densities. In particular, this includes geometrically finite convex projective structures. More specifically, with respect to the Sullivan measure, the Hilbert geodesic flow is strongly mixing, and orbits and primitive closed geodesics equidistribute, allowing us to asymptot…
Our monograph presents the foundations of the theory of groups and semigroups acting isometrically on Gromov hyperbolic metric spaces. Our work unifies and extends a long list of results by many authors. We make it a point to avoid any assumption of properness/compactness, keeping in mind the motivating example of $\mathbb H^\infty$, the infinite-dimensional rank-one symmetric space of noncompact type over the reals. The monograph provides a number of examples of groups acting on $\mathbb H^\infty$ which exhibit a wide range of phenomena not to be found in the finite-dimensional theory. Such e…
We investigate the distribution of orbits of a non-elementary discrete hyperbolic group acting on the n-dimensional hyperbolic space and its geometric boundary. In particular, we show that if the group $Γ$ admits a finite Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure (for instance, if it is geometrically finite), then every $Γ$-orbit in the hyperbolic space is equidistributed with respect to the Patterson-Sullivan measure supported on the limit set of $Γ$.The appendix by Maucourant is the extension of a part of his thesis where he obtains the same result as a simple application of Roblin's theorem. Our appr…
In this paper we consider non-compact non-flat simply connected harmonic manifolds. In particular, we show that the Martin boundary and Busemann boundary coincide for such manifolds. For any finite volume quotient we show that (up to scaling) there is a unique Patterson-Sullivan measure and this measure coincides with the harmonic measure. As an application of these results we prove that the geodesic flow on a non-flat finite volume harmonic manifold without conjugate points is topologically transitive.
With their origin in thermodynamics and symbolic dynamics, Gibbs measures are crucial tools to study the ergodic theory of the geodesic flow on negatively curved manifolds. We develop a framework (through Patterson-Sullivan densities) allowing us to get rid of compactness assumptions on the manifold, and prove many existence, uniqueness and finiteness results of Gibbs measures. We give many applications, to the Variational Principle, the counting and equidistribution of orbit points and periods, the unique ergodicity of the strong unstable foliation and the classification of Gibbs densities on…
We establish an equidistribution result for Ruelle resonant states on compact locally symmetric spaces of rank one. More precisely, we prove that among the first band Ruelle resonances there is a density one subsequence such that the respective products of resonant and co-resonant states converge weakly to the Liouville measure. We prove this result by establishing an explicit quantum-classical correspondence between eigenspaces of the scalar Laplacian and the resonant states of the first band of Ruelle resonances which also leads to a new description of Patterson-Sullivan distributions.
We study the geodesic flow of a class of 3-manifolds introduced by Benoist which have some hyperbolicity but are non-Riemannian, not CAT(0), and with non-C^1 geodesic flow. The geometries are nonstrictly convex Hilbert geometries in dimension three which admit compact quotient manifolds by discrete groups of projective transformations. We prove the Patterson-Sullivan density is canonical, with applications to counting, and construct explicitly the Bowen-Margulis measure of maximal entropy. The main result of this work is ergodicity of the Bowen-Margulis measure.
In this paper we show that dynamical and counting results characteristic of negatively-curved Riemannian geometry, or more generally CAT(-1) or rank-one CAT(0) spaces, also hold for geometrically-finite strictly convex projective structures equipped with their Hilbert metric. More specifically, such structures admit a finite Sullivan measure; with respect to this measure, the Hilbert geodesic flow is strongly mixing, and orbits and primitive closed geodesics equidistribute, allowing us to asymptotically enumerate these objects.
A \emph{geodesic current} on a free group $F$ is an $F$-invariant measure on the set $\partial^2 F$ of pairs of distinct points of $\partial F$. The space of geodesic currents on $F$ is a natural companion of Culler-Vogtmann's Outer space $cv(F)$ and studying them together yields new information about both spaces as well as about the group $Out(F)$. The main aim of this paper is to introduce and study the notion of {\it geometric entropy} $h_T(μ)$ of a geodesic current $μ$ with respect to a point $T$ of $cv(F)$, which can be viewed as a length function on $F$. The geometric entropy is defined …
Let $X$ be a proper, geodesically complete CAT(0) space under a proper, non-elementary, isometric action by a group $Γ$ with a rank one element. We construct a generalized Bowen-Margulis measure on the space of unit-speed parametrized geodesics of $X$ modulo the $Γ$-action. Although the construction of Bowen-Margulis measures for rank one nonpositively curved manifolds and for CAT(-1) spaces is well-known, the construction for CAT(0) spaces hinges on establishing a new structural result of independent interest: Almost no geodesic, under the Bowen-Margulis measure, bounds a flat strip of any po…
