We obtain a Disjoint Frequent Hypercyclicity Criterion and show that it characterizes disjoint frequent hypercyclicity for a family of unilateral pseudo-shifts on $c_0(\mathbb{N})$ and $\ell^p(\mathbb{N})$, $1\le p <\infty$. As an application, we characterize disjoint frequently hypercyclic weighted shifts. We give analogous results for the weaker notions of disjoint upper frequent and reiterative hypercyclicity. Finally, we provide counterexamples showing that, although the frequent hypercyclicity, upper frequent hypercyclicity, and reiterative hypercyclicity coincide for weighted shifts on $\ell^p(\mathbb{N})$, this equivalence fails for disjoint versions of these notions.
We show that there exists an invertible $\mathcal{U}$-frequently hypercyclic operator on $\ell^p(\mathbb{N})$ ($1\le p <\infty$) whose inverse is not $\mathcal{U}$-frequently hypercyclic.
We provide criteria for the existence of upper frequently hypercyclic subspaces and for common hypercyclic subspaces, which include the following consequences. There exist frequently hypercyclic operators with upper-frequently hypercyclic subspaces and no frequently hypercyclic subspace. On the space of entire functions, each differentiation operator induced by a non-constant polynomial supports an upper frequently hypercyclic subspace, and the family of its non-zero scalar multiples has a common hypercyclic subspace. A question of Costakis and Sambarino on the existence of a common hypercycli…
A bounded linear operator $T$ on a Banach space $X$ is called frequently hypercyclic if there exists $x\in X$ such that the lower density of the set $\{n\in\N:T^nx\in U\}$ is positive for any non-empty open subset $U$ of $X$. Bayart and Grivaux have raised a question whether there is a frequently hypercyclic operator on any separable infinite dimensional Banach space. We prove that the spectrum of a frequently hypercyclic operator has no isolated points. It follows that there are no frequently hypercyclic operators on all complex and on some real hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces, whic…
In this paper, we examine various types of ${\mathcal F}$-hypercyclic (${\mathcal F}$-topologically transitive) and disjoint ${\mathcal F}$-hypercyclic (disjoint ${\mathcal F}$-topologically transitive) properties of binary relations over topological spaces. We pay special attention to finite structures like simple graphs, digraphs and tournaments, providing a great number of illustrative examples.
In this short note, we answer a question of Martin and Sanders [Integr. Equ. Oper. Theory, 85 (2) (2016), 191-220] by showing the existence of disjoint frequently hypercyclic operators which fail to be disjoint weakly mixing and, therefore, fail to satisfy the Disjoint Hypercyclicity Criterion. We also show that given an operator $T$ such that $T \oplus T$ is frequently hypercyclic, the set of operators $S$ such that $T, S$ are disjoint frequently hypercyclic but fail to satisfy the Disjoint Hypercyclicity Criterion is SOT dense in the algebra of bounded linear operators.
Given $\mathcal{A}$ the family of weights $a=(a_n)_n$ decreasing to $0$ such that the series $\sum_{n=0}^{\infty} a_n$ diverges, we show that the supremum on $\mathcal{A}$ of lower weighted densities coincides with the unweighted upper density and that the infimum on $\mathcal{A}$ of upper weighted densities coincides with the unweighted lower density. We then investigate the notions of $\mathcal{U}$-frequent hypercyclicity and frequent hypercyclicity associated to these weighted densities. We show that there exists an operator which is $\mathcal{U}$-frequently hypercyclic for each weight in $…
We characterize disjoint and simultaneously hypercyclic tuples of unilateral pseudo-shift operators on $\ell^p(\mathbb{N})$. As a consequence, complementing the results of Bernal and Jung, we give a characterization for simultaneously hypercyclic tuples of unilateral weighted shifts. We also give characterizations for unilateral pseudo-shifts that satisfy the Disjoint and Simultaneous Hypercyclicity Criterions. Contrary to the disjoint hypercyclicity case, tuples of weighted shifts turn out to be simultaneously hypercyclic if and only if they satisfy the Simultaneous Hypercyclicity Criterion.
We give a sufficient condition for two operators to be disjointly frequently hypercyclic. We apply this criterion to composition operators acting on $H(\mathbb D)$ or on the Hardy space $H^2(\mathbb D)$. We simplify a result on disjoint frequent hypercyclicity of pseudo shifts of a recent paper of Martin et al. and we exhibit two disjointly frequently hypercyclic weighted shifts.
Considering a family of upper frequently hypercyclic operators we care about the existence of vectors which are upper frequently hypercyclic for any operator of this family. We establish sufficient conditions for a family of operators to have these vectors called common upper frequently hypercyclic vectors. Using this result, we then give a construction of such vectors. Finally we derive some applications to families of weighted shifts.
We give a short proof of the existence of disjoint hypercyclic tuples of operators of any given length on any separable infinite dimensional Frechet space. A similar argument provides disjoint dual hypercyclic tuples of operators of any length on any infinite dimensional Banach space with separable dual.
We investigate frequently hypercyclic and chaotic linear operators from a measure-theoretic point of view. Among other things, we show that any frequently hypercyclic operator T acting on a reflexive Banach space admits an invariant probability measure with full support, which may be required to vanish on the set of all periodic vectors for T; that there exist frequently hypercyclic operators on the sequence space c_0 admitting no ergodic measure with full support; and that if an operator admits an ergodic measure with full support, then it has a comeager set of distributionally irregular vect…
We prove that a bounded operator $T$ on a separable Banach space $X$ satisfying a strong form of the Frequent Hypercyclicity Criterion (which implies in particular that the operator is universal in the sense of Glasner and Weiss) admits frequently hypercyclic vectors with irregularly visiting orbits, i.e. vectors $x\in X$ such that the set $\mathcal{N}_T(x,U)=\{n\ge 1\,;\,T^{n}x\in U\}$ of return times of $x$ into $U$ under the action of $T$ has positive lower density for every non-empty open set $U\subseteq X$, but there exists a non-empty open set $U_0\subseteq X$ such that $\nt{x}{U_0}$ has…
We analyze $f$-frequently hypercyclic, $q$-frequently hypercyclic ($q> 1$) and frequently hypercyclic $C_{0}$-semigroups ($q=1$) defined on complex sectors, working in the setting of separable infinite-dimensional Fréchet spaces. Some structural results of ours are given for a general class of ${\mathcal F}$-frequently hypercyclic $C_{0}$-semigroups, as well. We investigate generalized frequently hypercyclic translation semigroups and generalized frequently hypercyclic semigroups induced by semiflows on weighted function spaces. Several illustrative examples are presented.
In this paper, we show that if the direct sum $T\oplus T$ of frequently hypercyclic operators is frequently hypercyclic, then every higher direct sum $T\oplus\cdots\oplus T$ is also frequently hypercyclic.
It is not known if the inverse of a frequently hypercyclic bilateral weighted shift on $c_0(\mathbb{Z})$ is again frequently hypercyclic. We show that the corresponding problem for upper frequent hypercyclicity has a positive answer. We characterise, more generally, when bilateral weighted shifts on Banach sequence spaces are (upper) frequently hypercyclic.
We study dynamical notions lying between $\mathcal{U}$-frequent hypercyclicity and reiterative hypercyclicity by investigating weighted upper densities between the unweighted upper density and the upper Banach density. While chaos implies reiterative hypercyclicity, we show that chaos does not imply $\mathcal{U}$-frequent hypercyclicity with respect to any weighted upper density. Moreover, we show that if $T$ is $\mathcal{U}$-frequently hypercyclic (resp. reiteratively hypercyclic) then the n-fold product of $T$ is still $\mathcal{U}$-frequently hypercyclic (resp. reiteratively hypercyclic) an…
We answer one of the main current questions in Linear Dynamics by constructing a chaotic operator on $\ell^1$ which is not $\mathcal{U}$-frequently hypercyclic and thus not frequently hypercyclic. This operator also gives us an example of a chaotic operator which is not distributionally chaotic. We complement this result by showing that every chaotic operator is reiteratively hypercyclic.
In this paper, we introduce the notions of $f$-frequent hypercyclicity and ${\mathcal F}$-hypercyclicity for $C$-distribution semigroups in separable Fréchet spaces. We particularly analyze the classes of $q$-frequently hypercyclic $C$-distribution semigroups ($q\geq 1$) and frequently hypercyclic $C$-distribution semigroups, providing a great number of illustrative examples.
We exclude the existence of frequently hypercyclic operators that have a spectrum contained in the closed unit disc and that intersects the unit circle in only finitely many points under certain additional conditions. This extends a result of S. Shkarin, which states that the spectrum of a frequently hypercyclic operator cannot have isolated points.
Given a locally compact group $G$ and $1\leq p<\infty$, a sufficient condition ensuring the \emph{disjoint hypercyclicity} of finitely many weighted translations on $L^p(G)$ was investigated in this paper.
For the Dunkl operator $Λ_α$ $(α> -1/2)$ on the space of entire functions on the complex space C, the critical rate of growth for the integral means $M_p(f,r)$ of their hypercyclic functions $f$ is obtained. The rate of growth of the corresponding frequently hypercyclic functions is also analyzed.
We solve several problems on frequently hypercyclic operators. Firstly, we characterize frequently hypercyclic weighted shifts on $\ell^p(\mathbb Z)$, $p\geq 1$. Our method uses properties of the difference set of a set with positive upper density. Secondly, we show that there exists an operator which is $\mathcal U$-frequently hypercyclic, yet not frequently hypercyclic and that there exists an operator which is frequently hypercyclic, yet not distributionally chaotic. These (surprizing) counterexamples are given by weighted shifts on $c_0$. The construction of these shifts lies on the constr…
Enhancing a recent result of Bayart and Ruzsa we obtain a Birkhoff-type characterization of upper frequently hypercyclic operators and a corresponding Upper Frequent Hypercyclicity Criterion. As an application we characterize upper frequently hypercyclic weighted backward shifts on sequence spaces, which in turn allows us to come up with various counter-examples in linear dynamics that are substantially simpler than those previously obtained in the literature. More generally, we introduce the notion of upper Furstenberg families $\mathcal{A}$ and show that our main results hold for $\mathcal{A…
We introduce q-frequently hypercyclic operators and derive a sufficient criterion for a continuous operator to be q-frequently hypercyclic on a locally convex space. Applications are given to obtain q-frequently hypercyclic operators with respect to the norm-, F-norm- and weak*- topologies. Finally, the frequent hypercyclicity of the non-convolution operator $T_μ$ defined by $T_μ(f)(z) = f'(μz)$, $μ\ge1$ on the space $H(\mathbb{C})$ of entire functions equipped with the compact-open topology is shown.
Let $I$ be a countably infinite index set, and let $X$ be a Banach sequence space over $I.$ In this article, we characterize disjoint hypercyclic and supercyclic weighted pseudo-shift operators on $X$ in terms of the weights, the OP-basis, and the shift mappings on $I.$ Also, the shifts on weighted $L^p$ spaces of a directed tree and the operator weighted shifts on $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z,\mathcal{K}})$ are investigated as special cases.
In this note, we analyze frequently hypercyclic solutions of abstract higher-order differential equations in separable infinite-dimensional complex Banach spaces. We essentially apply results from the theory of $C$-regularized semigroups, providing several illustrative examples and possible applications.
Frequent hypercyclicity for translation $C_0$-semigroups on weighted spaces of continuous functions is investigated. The results are achieved by establishing an analogy between frequent hypercyclicity for the translation semigroup and for weighted pseudo-shifts and by characterizing frequent hypercyclic weighted pseudo-shifts in spaces of vanishing sequences. Frequent hypercylic translation semigroups in weighted $L^p$-spaces are also characterized.
We show that, under suitable conditions, an operator acting like a shift on some sequence space has a frequently hypercyclic random vector whose distribution is strongly mixing for the operator. This result will be applied to chaotic weighted shifts. We also apply it to every operator satisfying the Frequent Hypercyclicity Criterion, recovering a result of Murillo and Peris.
We study a hypercyclicity property of linear dynamical systems: a bounded linear operator T acting on a separable infinite-dimensional Banach space X is said to be hypercyclic if there exists a vector x in X such that {T^{n}x : n>0} is dense in X, and frequently hypercyclic if there exists x in X such that for any non empty open subset U of X, the set {n>0 ; T^n x \in U} has positive lower density. We prove that if T is a bounded operator on X which has "sufficiently many" eigenvectors associated to eigenvalues of modulus 1 in the sense that these eigenvectors are perfectly spanning, then T is…
We study frequent hypercyclicity in the context of strongly continuous semigroups of operators. More precisely, we give a criterion (sufficient condition) for a semigroup to be frequently hypercyclic, whose formulation depends on the Pettis integral. This criterion can be verified in certain cases in terms of the infinitesimal generator of semigroup. Applications are given for semigroups generated by Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators, and especially for translation semigroups on weighted spaces of $p$-integrable functions, or continuous functions that, multiplied by the weight, vanish at infinity.
We give a quantitative interpretation of the Frequent Hypercyclicity Criterion. Actually we show that an operator which satisfies the Frequent Hypercyclicity Criterion is necessarily A-frequently hypercyclic, where A refers to some weighted densities sharper than the natural lower density. In that order, we exhibit different scales of weighted densities that are of interest to quantify the "frequency" measured by the Frequent Hypercyclicity Criterion. Moreover we construct an example of unilateral weighted shift which is frequently hypercyclic but not A-frequently hypercyclic on a particular s…
We solve a problem posed by Blasco, Bonilla and Grosse-Erdmann in 2010 by constructing a harmonic function on $\mathbb{R}^N$, that is frequently hypercyclic with respect to the partial differentiation operator $\partial/\partial x_k$ and which has a minimal growth rate in terms of the average $L^2$-norm on spheres of radius $r>0$ as $r \to \infty$.
Bayart and Ruzsa [Ergodic Theory Dynam. Systems 35 (2015)] have recently shown that every frequently hypercyclic weighted shift on $\ell^p$ is chaotic. This contrasts with an earlier result of Bayart and Grivaux [Proc. London Math. Soc. (3) 94 (2007)] who constructed a non-chaotic frequently hypercyclic weighted shift on $c_0$. We first generalize the Bayart-Ruzsa theorem to all Banach sequence spaces in which the unit sequences are a boundedly complete unconditional basis. We then study the relationship between frequent hypercyclicity and chaos for weighted shifts on Fréchet sequence spaces, …
We extend a result of Bès, Martin, Peris and Shkarin by stating: $B_w$ is $\mathscr{F}$-weighted backward shift if and only if $(B_w,\dots, B_w^r)$ is $d$-$\mathscr{F}$, for any $r\in \mathbb{N}$, where $\mathscr{F}$ runs along some filters containing strictly the family of cofinite sets, which are frequently used in Ramsey theory. On the other hand, we point out that this phenomenon does not occur beyond the weighted shift frame by showing a mixing linear operator $T$ on a Hilbert space such that the tuple $(T, T^2)$ is not $d$-syndetic. We also investigate the relationship between reiterativ…
Motivated by a question posed by Sophie Grivaux concerning the regularity of the orbits of frequently hypercylic operators, we show the following: for any operator $T$ on a separable metrizable and complete topological vector space $X$ which is both frequently hypercyclic and piecewise syndetic hypercyclic, the lower density and upper Banach density of the recurrence set $\{n\geq 1: T^n x\in U\}$ are different, for any hypercyclic vector $x\in X$ for $T$, and a certain collection of non-empty open sets $U\subseteq X$. As an immediate consequence we got a sufficient condition for a chaotic oper…
We provide with criteria for a family of sequences of operators to share a frequently universal vector. These criteria are variants of the classical Frequent Hypercyclicity Criterion and of a recent criterion due to Grivaux, Matheron and Menet where periodic points play the central role. As an application, we obtain for any operator T in a specific class of operators acting on a separable Banach space, a necessary and sufficient condition on a subset $Λ$ of the complex plane for the family {$λ$T : $λ$ $\in$ $Λ$} to have a common frequently hypercyclic vector. In passing, this permits us to eas…
It is known that homogeneous polynomials on Banach spaces cannot be hypercyclic, but there are examples of hypercyclic homogeneous polynomials on some non-normable Fréchet spaces. We show the existence of hypercyclic polynomials on $H(\mathbb C)$, by exhibiting a concrete polynomial which is also the first example of a frequently hypercyclic homogeneous polynomial on any $F$-space. We prove that the homogeneous polynomial on $ H(\mathbb C)$ defined as the product of a translation operator and the evaluation at 0 is mixing, frequently hypercyclic and chaotic. We prove, in contrast, that some na…
We solve a problem posed by A. Bonilla and K.-G. Grosse-Erdmann by constructing an entire function $f$ that is frequently hypercyclic with respect to the differentiation operator, and satisfies $M_f(r)\leq\displaystyle ce^r r^{-1/4}$, where $c>0$ be chosen arbirarily small. The obtained growth rate is sharp. We also obtain optimal results for the growth when measured in terms of average $L^p$-norms. Among other things, the proof applies Rudin-Shapiro polynomials and heat kernel estimates.
We provide conditions for a linear map of the form $C_{R,T}(S)=RST$ to be $q$-frequently hypercyclic on algebras of operators on separable Banach spaces. In particular, if $R$ is a bounded operator satisfying the $q$-Frequent Hypercyclicity Criterion, then the map $C_{R}(S)$=$RSR^*$ is shown to be $q$-frequently hypercyclic on the space $\mathcal{K}(H)$ of all compact operators and the real topological vector space $\mathcal{S}(H)$ of all self-adjoint operators on a separable Hilbert space $H$. Further we provide a condition for $C_{R,T}$ to be $q$-frequently hypercyclic on the Schatten von Ne…
The question of whether a hypercyclic operator $T$ acting on a Fr{é}chet algebra $X$ admits or not an algebra of hypercyclic vectors (but 0) has been addressed in the recent literature. In this paper we give new criteria and characterizations in the context of convolution operators acting on $H(\mathbb C)$ and backward shifts acting on a general Fr{é}chet sequence algebra.Analogous questions arise for stronger properties like frequent hypercyclicity. In this trend we give a sufficient condition for a weighted backward shift to admit an upper frequently hypercyclic algebra and we find a weighte…
In this note we study the random entire functions defined as power series $f(z) = \sum_{n=0}^\infty \frac{X_n}{n!} z^n$ with independent and identically distributed coefficients $(X_n)$ and show that, under very weak assumptions, they are frequently hypercyclic for the differentiation operator $D: H(\C) \to H(\C)$, $f \mapsto Df = f'$. This gives a very simple probabilistic construction of $D$-frequently hypercyclic functions in $H(\C)$. Moreover we show that, under more restrictive assumptions on the distribution of the $(X_n)$, these random entire functions have a growth rate that differs fr…
We improve a recent result by giving the optimal conclusion possible both to the frequent universality criterion and the frequent hypercyclicity criterion using the notion of A-densities, where A refers to some weighted densities sharper than the natural lower density. Moreover we construct an operator which is logarithmically-frequently hypercyclic but not frequently hypercyclic.
