We perform a systematic study of the electric and magnetic dipole moments of dark matter (DM) that are induced at the one-loop level when DM experiences four-fermion interactions with Standard Model (SM) charged fermions. Related to their loop nature these moments can largely depend on the UV completion at the origin of the four-fermion operators. We illustrate this property by considering explicitly two simple ways to generate these operators, from $t$- or $s$-channel tree-level exchange. Fixing the strength of these interactions from the DM relic density constraint, we obtain in particular a magnetic moment that, depending on the interaction considered, lies typically between $10^{-20}$ to $10^{-23}$ ecm or identically vanishes. These non-vanishing values induce, via photon exchange, DM-nucleus scattering cross sections that could be probed by current or near future direct detection experiments.
The string theory landscape of vacua solutions provides physicists with some understanding as to the magnitude of the cosmological constant. Similar reasoning can be applied to the magnitude of the soft SUSY breaking terms in supersymmetric models of particle physics: there appears to be a statistical draw towards large soft terms which is tempered by the anthropic requirement of the weak scale lying not too far from ~100 GeV. For a mild statistical draw of m_{soft}^n with n=1 (as expected from SUSY breaking due to a single F term) then the light Higgs mass is preferred at ~125 GeV while spart…
In a previous publication, we showed that a high energy muon collider can make decisive statements about the electroweak (WIMP) Dark Matter (DM), reaching a DM mass which could give the observed thermal relic abundance. In this document, we report new studies of the spin-$0$ minimal WIMP DM at high energy muon colliders, and update our results on the fermionic spin-$1/2$ case. We find that, by combining multiple inclusive missing mass search channels, it is possible to fully cover the thermal targets of fermionic and scalar doublets, and Dirac triplet, with a 10 TeV muon collider. Higher energ…
We present PandaX-II constraints on candidate WIMP-nucleon effective interactions involving the nucleon or WIMP spin, including, in addition to standard axial spin-dependent (SD) scattering, various couplings among vector and axial currents, magnetic and electric dipole moments, and tensor interactions. The data set corresponding to a total exposure of 54-ton-days is reanalyzed to determine constraints as a function of the WIMP mass and isospin coupling. We obtain WIMP-nucleon cross section bounds of $\rm 1.6 \times 10^{-41} cm^2$ and $\rm 9.0 \times 10^{-42} cm^2$ ($90\%$ c.l.) for neutron-on…

Theoretical Expectations for the Muon's Electric Dipole Moment
The observed value of the muon magnetic dipole moment, which deviates from the Standard Model prediction by $4.2σ$, can be explained in models with weakly-interacting massive particles (WIMPs) coupled to muons. However, a considerable range of parameter space of such models will remain unexplored in the future LHC experiments and dark matter (DM) direct searches. In this work we discuss the temperature observation of neutron stars (NSs) as a promising way to probe such models given that WIMPs are efficiently captured by NSs through DM-muon or spin-dependent DM-nucleon scattering. The captured …
An Effective Field Theory (EFT) analysis of the magnetic moment of the muon is discussed. The expression for the dipole moment is given in terms of operator coefficients of the low-energy effective field theory (LEFT) and the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT), where one-loop renormalization group improved perturbation theory, the one-loop matching from SMEFT onto LEFT as well as one-loop lepton matrix elements of the effective-theory operators were taken into account. Interestingly only a very limited set of the SMEFT operators is able to explain the current deviation of the magnet…
The contributions of a second Higgs doublet to the electron electric dipole moment near the heavy Higgs decoupling limit are determined within an effective field theory framework. In models that satisfy the Glashow-Weinberg condition, the leading contributions in this limit at effective dimension six are shown to come from two-loop Barr-Zee diagrams that include the Standard Model-like Higgs boson. Additional diagrams that include heavy Higgs bosons are sub-leading and contribute only at effective dimension eight near the decoupling limit. This simplification implies that to leading order in t…
We perform a model-independent analysis of the magnetic and electric dipole moments of the muon and electron. We give expressions for the dipole moments in terms of operator coefficients of the low-energy effective field theory (LEFT) and the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT). We use one-loop renormalization group improved perturbation theory, including the one-loop matching from SMEFT onto LEFT, and one-loop lepton matrix elements of the effective-theory operators. Semileptonic four-fermion operators involving light quarks give sizable non-perturbative contributions to the dipole …
