In this paper we correct previous work on magnetic charge plus a photon mass. We show that contrary to previous claims this system has a very simple, closed form solution which is the Dirac string potential multiplied by a exponential decaying part. Interesting features of this solution are discussed, namely, (i) the Dirac string becomes a real feature of the solution, (ii) the breaking of gauge symmetry via the photon mass leads to a breaking of the rotational symmetry of the monopole's magnetic field, (iii) the Dirac quantization condition is potentially altered.
It is shown how to break the symmetry of a Lagrangian with duality symmetry between electric and magnetic monopoles, so that at low energy, electric monopole interactions continue to be observed but magnetic monopole interactions become very highly suppressed to the point of effectively vanishing. The "zero-charge" problem of source-free electrodynamics is solved by requiring invariance under continuous, local, duality transformations, while local duality symmetry combined with local U(1)EM gauge symmetry leads naturally and surprisingly to an SU(2)D duality gauge group.
We investigate in detail the problem of constructing magnetic monopole solutions within the finite-range electrodynamics (i.e., electrodynamics with non-zero photon mass, which is the simplest extension of the standard theory; it is fully compatible with the experiment). We first analyze the classical electrodynamics with the additional terms describing the photon mass and the magnetic charge; then we look for a solution analogous to the Dirac monopole solution. Next, we plug the found solution into the Schrödinger equation describing the interaction between the the magnetic charge and the ele…
We develop the quantum field theory of electron-point magnetic monopole interactions and more generally, dyon-dyon interactions, based on the original string-dependent ``nonlocal'' action of Dirac and Schwinger. We demonstrate that a viable nonperturbative quantum field theoretic formulation can be constructed that results in a string {\em independent} cross section for monopole-electron and dyon-dyon scattering. Such calculations can be done only by using nonperturbative approximations such as the eikonal and not by some mutilation of lowest-order perturbation theory.
We investigate the possibility of coexistence between Dirac-like monopoles and Lorentz-violating electrodynamics. For this purpose, we study three distinct models: Myers-Pospelov, Ellis et al. and Gambini-Pullin. In particular, we find that in the Myers-Pospelov electrodynamics, magnetic sources may be properly induced when it is accompanied by the appearance of an extra electric current. The symmetry under duality transformations and the Dirac quantization condition in the aforementioned theories is also discussed.
The space of local operators in three-dimensional quantum electrodynamics contains monopole operators that create $n$ units of gauge flux emanating from the insertion point. This paper uses the state-operator correspondence to calculate the anomalous dimensions of these monopole operators perturbatively to next-to-leading order in the $1/N_f$ expansion, thus improving on the existing leading order results in the literature. Here, $N_f$ is the number of two-component complex fermion flavors. The scaling dimension of the $n=1$ monopole operator is $0.265 N_f - 0.0383 + O(1/N_f)$ at the infrared …
Compact U(1) gauge theory in 3+1 dimensions possesses the confining phase, characterized by a linear raise of the potential between particles with opposite electric charges at sufficiently large inter-particle separation. The confinement is generated by condensation of Abelian monopoles at strong gauge coupling. We study the properties of monopoles and the deconfining order parameter in zero-temperature theory in the presence of ideally conducting parallel metallic boundaries (plates) usually associated with the Casimir effect. Using first-principle numerical simulations in compact U(1) lattic…
It has been proposed recently \cite{son} that excitations in Spin Ice can be of the form of magnetic monopoles that does not obey the Dirac Quantization Condition. It is also well known \cite{rj} that the above scenario leads to non-associativity among translation generators. It will be interesting to see how the monopole picture in Spin Ice survives in the light of the latter observation.
We present the first evidence from lattice simulations that the magnetic monopoles in three dimensional compact quantum electrodynamics (cQED3) with N_f=2 and N_f= 4 four-component fermion flavors are in a plasma phase. The evidence is based mainly on the divergence of the monopole susceptibility (polarizability) with the lattice size at weak gauge couplings. A weak four-Fermi term added to the cQED3 action enabled simulations with massless fermions. The exact chiral symmetry of the interaction terms forbids symmetry breaking lattice discretization counterterms to appear in the theory's effect…
In a recent study on monopole production [Eur. Phys. J. C (2018) 78: 966], Baines et al added the potential of a magnetic dipole to the Wu-Yang potentials for the Dirac monopole and claimed that this modified Wu-Yang configuration does not affect the Dirac quantisation condition. In this comment, we argue that their claim is incorrect by showing that their modified Wu-Yang configuration leads to an infinite number of quantisation conditions. In their study, they also incorrectly identified the magnetic field of the monopole with the magnetic field of the Dirac string and its attached magnetic …
We analyze the role played by the gauge invariance for the existence of Dirac monopole. To this end, we consider the electrodynamics with massive photon and ask if the magnetic charge can be introduced there. We show that the derivation of the Dirac quantization condition based on the angular momentum algebra cannot be generalized to the case of massive electrodynamics. Possible implications of this result are briefly discussed.
We point out a problem with the stability of composite (global-magnetic) monopoles recently proposed by J. Spinelly, U. de Freitas and E.R. Bezerra de Mello [Phys. Rev. D66, 024018 (2002)].
We consider the question of ground states in the supersymmetric system that arises in the search for the missing H-monopole states. By studying the effective theory near certain singularities in the five-brane moduli space, we find the remaining BPS states required by the conjectured S-duality of the toroidally compactified heterotic string.
We develop a quaternionic electrodynamics and show that it naturally supports the existence of magnetic monopoles. We obtained the field equations, the continuity equation, the electrodynamic force law, the Poynting vector, the energy conservation and the stress-energy tensor. The formalism also enabled us to generalize the Dirac monopole and the charge quantization rule.
In recent work a multimonopole solution of heterotic string theory was obtained. The monopoles are noted to be stable, in contrast with analogous solutions of Einstein-Maxwell or Yang-Mills-dilaton theory. The existence of this and other classes of stable solitonic solutions in string theory thus provides a possible test for low-energy string theory as distinct from other gauge + gravity theories.
We study magnetic monopoles in a Lorentz- and CPT-odd electrodynamical framework in (3+1) dimensions. This is the standard Maxwell model extended by means of a Chern-Simons-like term, $b_μ\tilde{F}^{μν}A_ν$ ($b_μ$ constant), which respects gauge invariance but violates both Lorentz and CPT symmetries (as a consequence, duality is also lost). Our main interest concerns the analysis of the model in the presence of Dirac monopoles, so that the Bianchi identity no longer holds, which naively yields the non-conservation of electric charge. Since gauge symmetry is respected, the issue of charge cons…
Classical Maxwell and Maxwell-Chern-Simons (MCS) Electrodynamics in (2+1)D are studied in some details. General expressions for the potential and fields are obtained for both models, and some particular cases are explicitly solved. Conceptual and technical difficulties arise, however, for accelerated charges. The propagation of electromagnetic signals is also studied and their reverberation is worked out and discussed. Furthermore, we show that a Dirac-like monopole yields a (static) tangential electric field. We also discuss some classical and quantum consequences of the field created by such…
Study of magnetic monopoles in the original version of Born-Infeld (BI) electrodynamics is performed. It then is realized that interesting new physics emerge and they include exotic behavior of radial electric monopole field such as its regularity as $r\to 0$ and its changing behavior with the absence or presence of the radial magnetic monopole field. This last point has been interpreted as the manifestation of the existence of point-like dyons in abelian BI theory. Two pieces of clear evidences in favor of this dyon interpretation are provided. It is also demonstrated that despite these uniqu…
Recently, the monopole-antimonopole pair and monopole-antimonopole chain solutions are solved with internal space coordinate system of $θ$-winding number $m$ greater than one. However, we notice that it is also possible to solve these solutions numerically in terms of $θ$-winding number $m=1$ instead. When $m=1$, the exact asymptotic solutions at small and large distances are parameterized by a single integer parameter $s$. Here we once again study the monopole-antimonopole pair solution of the SU(2) Yang-Mills-Higgs theory which belongs to the topological trivial sector numerically in its new…
I show that the main statement of [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 094802 (2010), arXiv:1005.2617] is wrong. Other inconsistences of this Letter are also discussed.
It has long been known that in the absence of electric charges and currents, Maxwell's electromagnetism in 4 dimensional vacuum Minkowski space-time is invariant under SO(2) dual transformations that mix its electric and magnetic fields. Extending this symmetry to include the coupling to electrically charged matter, requires a dual coupling to magnetically charged matter as well, leading to Maxwell equations for SO(2) dual electrodynamics. Based on a doubled ensemble of SO(2) dual 4-vector gauge potentials which does away with the need of Dirac string singularities for magnetic monopoles, a lo…
We perform the gauge covariant quantization of the exponential model of nonlinear electrodynamics. Magnetically charged black holes, in the framework of our model are considered, and the regular black hole solution is obtained in general relativity. The asymptotic black hole solution at $r\rightarrow \infty$ is found. We calculate the magnetic mass of the black hole and the metric function which are expressed via the parameter $β$ of the model and the magnetic charge. The thermodynamic properties and thermal stability of regular black holes are analysed. We calculate the Hawking temperature of…
We show that there is an inconsistency in the class of solutions obtained in Phys. Rev. D {\bf 95}, 084037 (2017). This inconsistency is due to the approximate relation between lagrangian density and its derivative for Non-Linear Electrodynamics. We present an algorithm to obtain new classes of solutions.
We compare the vortex-like solutions of two different theories in (2+1) dimensions. In the first a nonrelativistic field self-interacts through a Chern-Simons gauge connection. It is $P$ and $T$ violating. The second is the standard Maxwell scalar electrodynamics. We show that for specific values of some parameters the same vortex-configurations provide solutions for both theories.
We consider 2+1 dimensional compact U(1) gauge theory at the Lifshitz point with dynamical critical exponent $z=2$. As in the usual $z=1$ theory, monopoles proliferate the vacuum for any value of the coupling, generating a mass scale. The theory of the dilute monopole gas is written in terms a non-relativistic Sine-Gordon model with two real fields. While monopoles remove some of the massless poles of the perturbative field strength propagator, a gapless mode representing the incomplete screening of monopoles remains, and is protected by a shift invariance of the original theory. Timelike Wils…

We investigate the advantages of machine learning techniques to recognize the dynamics of topological objects in quantum field theories. We consider the compact U(1) gauge theory in three spacetime dimensions as the simplest example of a theory that exhibits confinement and mass gap phenomena generated by monopoles. We train a neural network with a generated set of monopole configurations to distinguish between confinement and deconfinement phases, from which it is possible to determine the deconfinement transition point and to predict several observables. The model uses a supervised learning …
Abelian theories in three dimensions can have linearly confining phases as a result of monopole-instantons, as shown, for SU(2) Yang-Mills theory broken to its abelian subgroup, by Polyakov. In this article the generalization of this phase for N=2 supersymmetric abelian theories is identified, using a dual description. Topologically stable BPS-saturated and unsaturated particle and string solitons play essential roles. A plasma of chiral monopoles of charge 1 and -1 (along with their antichiral conjugates) are required for a stable confining vacuum. N=2 SU(2) Yang-Mills theory broken to U(1) l…
Despite their potential importance for understanding astrophysical jets, physically realistic exact solutions for magnetospheres around Kerr black holes have not been found, even in the force-free approximation. Instead approximate analytical solutions such as the Blandford-Znajek (split-)monopole, as well as numerical solutions, have been constructed. In this paper we consider a new approach to the analysis and construction of such magnetospheres. We consider force-free electrodynamics close to the rotation axis of a magnetosphere surrounding a Kerr black hole assuming axisymmetry. This is th…
Dual electrodynamics and corresponding Maxwell's equations (in the presence of monopole only) are revisited from dual symmetry and accordingly the quaternionic reformulation of field equations and equation of motion is developed in simple, compact and consistent manner.
In [1, arXiv:1005.2617] effective field theory methods have been employed to compute the equations of motion of a spherically symmetric charged shell of radius R, taking into account the radiation reaction force exerted by the shell's own electromagnetic field up to O(R^2). The authors of Ref. [1] have stated that the known result for the self force of the shell as can be found from Eq. (16.28) of the textbook of Jackson [2] (see also Chap. 4 in the review of Pearle [3]) is incorrect, in that the term linear in R should be absent. We claim that this conclusion of Ref. [1] is incorrect, and tha…
In the present contribution we show that the introduction of axial currents in electrodynamics can explain the quantization of electric charge and introduces a dynamical discreteness of space-time, justifying thus the regularization of Feymman's integrals.
The recent paper by Lee and Lee (2004) may strongly leave the impression that astronomers have established that the rotation curves of spiral galaxies are flat. We show that the old paradigm of Flat Rotation Curves lacks, today, any observational support and following it at face value leads to intrinsically flawed alternatives to the Standard Dark Matter Scenario. On the other side, we claim that the rich systematics of spiral galaxy rotation curves, that reveals, in the standard Newtonian Gravity framework, the phenomenon of dark matter, in alternative scenarios, works as a unique benchmark.
In the present contribution we show that the introduction of a conserved axial current in electrodynamics can explain the quantization of electric charge, preserving parity conservation, and introduces a dynamical discreteness into space-time.
The Bardeen model -- the first regular black hole model in General Relativity -- is reinterpreted as the gravitational field of a nonlinear magnetic monopole, i.e., as a magnetic solution to Einstein equations coupled to a nonlinear electrodynamics.
We analyze the unlocalized ``Cheshire charge'' carried by ``Alice strings.'' The magnetic charge on a string loop is carefully defined, and the transfer of magnetic charge from a monopole to a string loop is analyzed using global topological methods. A semiclassical theory of electric charge transfer is also described.
In the framework of three-dimensional Born-Infeld Electrodynamics, we pursue an investigation of the consequences of the space-time dimensionality on the existence of magnetostatic fields generated by electric charges at rest in an inertial frame, which are present in its four-dimensional version. Our analysis reveals interesting features of the model. In fact, a magnetostatic field associated with an electric charge at rest does not appear in this case. Interestingly, the addition of the topological term (Chern-Simons) to Born-Infeld Electrodynamics yields the appearance of the magnetostatic …
Dirac's original solution of the nontrivial Bianchi identity for magnetic monopoles [Dirac 1948], which redefines the fieldstrength along the Dirac string, diagonalizes the gauge and monopole degrees of freedom. We provide a variant of the Dirac string, which we motivate through a formal expansion of the Bianchi identity. We show how to use our variant prescription to study monopole electrodynamics without reference to a dual potential and provide some applications.
Dirac's operator and Maxwell's equations in vacuum are derived in the algebra of split octonions. The approximations are given which lead to classical Maxwell-Heaviside equations from full octonionic equations. The non-existence of magnetic monopoles in classical electrodynamics is connected with the using of associativity limit.
In the present work we argue that the usual assumption that magnetic currents possess the vector structure characteristic of electric currents may be the source of several difficulties in the theory of magnetic monopoles. We propose an {\it axial} magnetic current instead and show that such difficulties are solved. Charge quantization is shown to be intimately connected with results of theories of discrete space time.
In this paper we discuss some aspects concerning the electromagnetic sector of the abelian Lee-Wick (LW) quantum electrodynamics (QED). Using the Dirac's theory of constrained systems, the higher-order canonical quantization of the LW electromagnetism is performed. A quantum bound on the LW heavy mass is also estimated using the best known measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron. Finally it is shown that magnetic monopoles can coexist peacefully in the LW scenario.
We study static, spherically symmetric, composite global-local monopoles with a direct interaction term between the two sectors in the regime where the interaction potential is large. At some critical coupling the global defect disappears and with it the deficit angle of the space-time. We find new solutions which represent local monopoles in an Anti-de-Sitter spacetime. In another parameter range the magnetic monopole, or even both, disappear. The decay of the magnetic monopole is accompanied by a dynamical transition from the higgsed phase to the gauge-symmetric phase. We comment on the appl…
String theory avoids the ultraviolet infinities that arise in trying to quantize gravity. It is also more predictive than conventional quantum field theory, one aspect of this being the way that it contributed to the emergence of the concept of ``supersymmetry'' of particle interactions. There are hints from the successes of supersymmetric unified theories of particle interactions that supersymmetry is relevant to elementary particles at energies close to current accelerator energies; if this is so, it will be confirmed experimentally and supersymmetry is then also likely to be important in co…
We demonstrate that 3+1-dimensional quantum electrodynamics with fermionic charges, fermionic monopoles, and fermionic dyons arises at the edge of a 4+1-dimensional gapped state with short-range entanglement. This state cannot be adiabatically connected to a product state, even in the absence of any symmetry. This provides independent evidence for the obstruction found by arXiv:1306.3238 to a 3+1-dimensional short-distance completion of all-fermion electrodynamics. The non-triviality of the bulk is demonstrated by a novel fermion number anomaly.
Despite decades-long efforts, magnetic monopoles were never found as elementary particles. Monopoles and associated currents were directly measured in experiments and identified as topological quasiparticle excitations in emergent condensed matter systems. These monopoles and the related electric-magnetic symmetry were restricted to classical electrodynamics, with monopoles behaving as classical particles. Here we show that the electric-magnetic symmetry is most fundamental and extends to full quantum behavior. We demonstrate that at low temperatures magnetic monopoles can form a quantum Bose …
We show that baryon-like operators exist in the N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons-matter theory constructed by Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis and Maldacena (ABJM). This involves the introduction of Wilson(or 't Hooft) lines ending on baryon-like operators and we show that the presence of such lines cannot be detected by the fields in the theory. The same construction can be used to make magnetic monopoles charged under the diagonal U(1) gauge group with arbitrary non-integral charge. If we do not include such monopole configurations in the path integral, the moduli space is known to be given by the …
By adding a small, irrelevant four fermi interaction to the action of noncompact lattice Quantum Electrodynamics (QED), the theory can be simulated with massless quarks in a vacuum free of lattice monopoles. The lattice theory possesses a second order chiral phase transition which we show is logarithmically trivial, with the same systematics as the Nambu-Jona Lasinio model. The irrelevance of the four fermi coupling is established numerically. The widths of the scaling windows are examined in both the coupling constant and bare fermion mass directions in parameter space. For vanishing fermion …
By requiring the linear differential operator in Newton's law of motion to be self adjoint, we obtain the field equation for the linear theory, which is the classical electrodynamics. In the process, we are also led to a fundamental universal chiral relation between electric and magnetic monopoles which implies that the two are related. Thus there could just exist only one kind of charge which is conventionally called electric.
The electromagnetic response of topological insulators is governed by axion electrodynamics, which features a topological magnetoelectric term in the Maxwell equations. As a consequence magnetic fields become the source of electric fields and vice-versa, a phenomenon that is general for any material exhibiting a linear magnetoelectric effect. Axion electrodynamics has been associated with the possibility to create magnetic monopoles, in particular by an electrical charge that is screened above the surface of a magnetoelectric material. Here we explicitly solve for the electromagnetic fields in…
Quantum spin liquids host novel emergent excitations, such as monopoles of an emergent gauge field. Here, we study the hierarchy of monopole operators that emerges at quantum critical points (QCPs) between a two-dimensional Dirac spin liquid and various ordered phases. This is described by a confinement transition of quantum electrodynamics in two spatial dimensions (QED3 Gross-Neveu theories). Focusing on a spin ordering transition, we get the scaling dimension of monopoles at leading order in a large-N expansion, where 2N is the number of Dirac fermions, as a function of the monopole's total…
Dirac-like monopoles are studied in three-dimensional Abelian Maxwell and Maxwell-Chern-Simons models. Their scalar nature is highlighted and discussed through a dimensional reduction of four-dimensional electrodynamics with electric and magnetic sources. Some general properties and similarities of them when are considered in Minkowski or Euclidian space are mentioned. However, by virtue of the structure of the space-time in which they are considered a number of differences among them take place. Furthermore, we pay attention to some consequences of these objects when acting upon usual particl…
N=1^* gauge theories are believed to have fractional instanton contributions in the confining vacua. D3 brane probe computations in gravitation dual of large-N N=2^* gauge theories point to the absence of such contributions in the low energy gauge dynamics. We study fractional instantons in N=2 SU(2) Yang-Mills theory from the field theoretical perspective. We present new solutions to the Seiberg-Witten SU(2) monodromy problem with the same perturbative asymptotic, a massless monopole and a dyon singularity on the moduli space, and fractional instanton corrections to N=2 prepotential in the se…
We study electric and magnetic monopoles in static, spherically symmetric and constant curvature geometries in the context of the inverse electrodynamics model. We prove that this U(1) invariant Lagrangian density is able to support the standard metric of a Reissner-Nordstrom Black Hole, but with more complex thermodynamical properties than in the standard case. By employing the Euclidean Action approach we perform a complete analysis of its phase space depending on the sign and singularities of the heat capacity and the Helmholtz free energy.
Gravastar models have recently been proposed as an alternative to black holes, mainly to avoid the problematic issues associated with event horizons and singularities. In this work, a wide variety of gravastar models within the context of nonlinear electrodynamics are constructed. Using the $F$ representation, specific forms of Lagrangians are considered describing magnetic gravastars, which may be interpreted as self-gravitating magnetic monopoles with charge $g$. Using the dual $P$ formulation of nonlinear electrodynamics, electric gravastar models are constructed by considering specific str…
We study a five-dimensional field theory which contains a monopole (string) solution with chiral fermion zero modes. This monostring solution is a close analog of the fivebrane solution of M-theory. The cancellation of normal bundle anomalies parallels that for the M-theory fivebrane, in particular, the presence of a Chern-Simons term in the low-energy effective U(1) gauge theory plays a central role. We comment on the relationship between the the microscopic analysis of the world-volume theory and the low-energy analysis and draw some cautionary lessons for M-theory.
Massive higher spin fields on de Sitter space exhibit enhanced gauge symmetries at special values of the mass. These fields are known as "partially massless." We study the structure of the charges and Gauss laws which characterize sources for the partially massless spin-2. Despite having a simple scalar gauge symmetry, there is a rich structure of gauge charges. The charges come in electric and magnetic varieties, each taking values in the fundamental representation of the de Sitter group. We find two invariant electric-like charges and two invariant magnetic-like charges and we find the point…
