Differential modulation schemes are very relevant in receivers having power and processing limitations, as these schemes dispense with the need for knowledge of channel coefficients for symbol detection. Spatial modulation (SM) is a scheme used in multi-antenna transmission scenarios where the data is transmitted in the amplitude, phase and spatial domains through selected antennas. In the coherent domain, generalized SM (GSM) employs multiple antennas in combination during every time slot to enhance the spectral efficiency (SE). In this paper, we propose two differential schemes which activate two or more antennas at a time to transmit the modulated symbol. These schemes achieve higher SE using a lesser number of antennas and lower order modulation schemes instead of the higher number of antennas required for conventional SM schemes based on differential modulation. Simulation studies reveal that the proposed schemes have better bit error rate performance than traditional differential SM schemes. We also derive the analytical union bound for the proposed schemes and is satisfied from medium to high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) ranges.

There has been much interest in the non-linear frequency-division multiplexing (NFDM) transmission scheme in the optical fibre communication system. Up to date, most of the demonstrated NFDM schemes have employed only single polarisation for data transmission. Employing both polarisations can potentially double the data rate of NFDM systems. We investigate in simulation a dual-polarisation NFDM transmission with data modulation on the $b$-coefficient. First, a transformation that facilitates the dual-polarisation $b$-modulation was built upon an existing transformation. Second, the $q_c$- and …
We propose a new secure transmission scheme which uses directional modulation (DM) with artificial noise and is aided by the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). Specifically, the direct path and IRS-enabled reflect path carry the same confidential signal and thus can be coherently added at the desired position to maximize the total received power, while the received signals at other positions are distorted. We derive a closed-form expression for the secrecy rate achieved by the proposed scheme. Using simulation results, we show that the proposed scheme can achieve two-dimensional secure tran…
The emerging millimeter-wave (mm-wave) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) air-to-ground (A2G) communications are facing the Doppler effect problem that arises from the inevitable wobbling of the UAV. The fast time-varying channel for UAV A2G communications may lead to the outdated channel state information (CSI) from the channel estimation. In this paper, we introduce two detectors to demodulate the received signal and get the instantaneous bit error probability (BEP) of a mm-wave UAV A2G link under imperfect CSI. Based on the designed detectors, we propose an adaptive modulation scheme to maximize…
Multidimensional Index Modulations (IM) are a novel alternative to conventional modulations which can bring considerable benefits for future wireless networks. The proposed scheme is designed for multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) scenarios and incorporates a precoder which removes multiuser …
Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) based communications have emerged as a new paradigm. This letter proposes a differential reflecting modulation (DRM) scheme for RIS based communication systems. In DRM, information bits are jointly carried by the activation permutations of the reflecting patterns and the phases of the transmitted signals, leading to that DRM can work without any channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter, RIS or receiver. In other words, DRM can release the intricate and resource-consuming channel estimation in the transmission process. Simulation results show t…
The artificial noise (AN) aided multi-beam directional modulation (DM) technology is capable of wireless physical layer secure (PLS) transmissions for multiple desired receivers in free space. The application of AN, however, makes it less power-efficient for such a DM system. To address this problem, the weighted fractional Fourier transform (WFRFT) technology is employed in this paper to achieve power-efficient multi-beam DM transmissions. Specifically, a power-efficient multi-beam WFRFT-DM scheme with cooperative receivers and a power-efficient multi-beam WFRFT-DM scheme with independent rec…
Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) is widely employed in modern wireless communication systems to improve the transmission efficiency by adjusting the transmission rate according to the channel conditions. Thus, AMC can provide very efficient use of channel resources especially over fading channels. Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) is an ef- ficient and widely employed digital modulation technique. It typically employs a rectangular signal constellation. Therefore the decision regions of the constellation are square partitions of the two-dimensional signal space. However, it is well kno…
With the emergence of new applications (e.g., extended reality and haptics), which require to be simultaneously served not just with low latency and sufficient reliability, but also with high spectral efficiency, future networks (i.e., 6G) should be capable of meeting this demand by introducing new effective transmission designs. Motivated by this, a novel modulation technique termed as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with subcarrier power modulation (OFDM-SPM) is proposed for providing highly spectral-efficient data transmission with low-latency and less-complexity for future 6G wi…
As an excellent aided communication tool, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) can make a significant rate enhancement and coverage extension. In this paper, we present an investigation on beamforming in an IRS-aided directional modulation (DM) network. To fully explore the advantages of IRS, two beamforming methods with enhanced secrecy rate (SR) performance are proposed. The first method of maximizing secrecy rate (Max-SR) alternately optimizes confidential message (CM) beamforming vector, artificial noise (AN) beamforming vector and phase shift matrix. The first optimization vector is direc…

Minimum phase 1 GBaud 4-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals are transmitted over 10,000 km and successfully received after detection with a Kramers-Kronig (KK) coherent receiver. 8-, 16-, 32-, and 64-QAM are successfully transmitted over 7600, 5600, 3600, and 1600 km, respectively.
In this letter, we investigate a novel quadrature spatial scattering modulation (QSSM) transmission technique based on millimeter wave (mmWave) systems, in which the transmitter generates two orthogonal beams targeting candidate scatterers in the channel to carry the real and imaginary parts of the conventional signal, respectively. Meanwhile, the maximum likelihood (ML) detector is adopted at the receiver to recover the received beams and signals. Based on the ML detector, we derive the closed-form average bit error probability (ABEP) expression of the QSSM scheme. Furthermore, we evaluate th…
The digital Subscriber Line (DSL) remains an important component of heterogeneous networking, especially in historic city-centers, where using optical fibre is less realistic. In the recent bonding model, customer sites have been equipped with two/four copper pairs, which may be exploited for designing grouped spatial modulation (SM) aiming for reducing the power consumption and mitigating the stubborn crosstalk in DSL communications. Explicitly, we view t…
A novel transmission scheme is introduced for efficient data transmission by conveying additional information bits through jointly changing the index and number of active subcarriers within each orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) subblock. The proposed scheme is different from the conventional OFDM-subcarrier number modulation (OFDM-SNM) and OFDM-index modulation (OFDM-IM), in which data bits are transmitted using either number or index of active subcarriers. The proposed modulation technique offers superior spectral and energy efficiency compared to its counterparts OFDM-SNM an…
Shaping modulation formats in multi-dimensional (MD) space is an effective approach to harvest spectral efficiency gains in both the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel and the optical fiber channel. In the first part of this paper, existing MD geometrically-shaped modulations for fiber optical communications are reviewed. It is shown that large gains can be obtained by exploiting correlation in the dimensions or/and by increasing the cardinality of the modulation format. Practical limitations and challenges are also discussed together with efficient solutions. In the second part, we …
In this paper, we present voltage- and current-mode differential magnetless non-reciprocal devices obtained by pairing two single-ended (SE) circulators, each consisting of three first-order bandpass or bandstop LC filters, connected in either a wye or a delta topology. The resonant poles of each SE circulator are modulated in time with 120 deg phase-shifted periodic signals, resulting in synthetic angular-momentum biasing achieved through spatiotemporal modulation (STM). We tailor the two SE circulators to exhibit a constant 180 deg phase difference between their STM biases. Unlike convention…
As an attempt to tackle the low-data-rate issue of the conventional LoRa systems, we propose two novel frequency-bin-index (FBI) LoRa schemes. In scheme I, the indices of starting frequency bins (SFBs) are utilized to carry the information bits. To facilitate the actual implementation, the SFBs of each LoRa signal are divided into several groups prior to the modulation process in the proposed FBI-LoRa system. To further improve the system flexibility, we formulate a generalized modulation scheme and propose scheme II by treating the SFB groups as an additional type of transmission entity. In s…
We propose a novel scheme for downlink multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, called dual-layered transmit-receive generalized spatial modulation (DL-TR-GSM). The proposed scheme is based on the concept of dual-layered transmission (DLT) which uses two receive antenna power levels instead of receive antenna activation/inactivation to transmit data in the receive spatial domain. Hence, in order to minimize the bit error rate (BER) for DL-TR-GSM, the optimal ratio between the two power levels is determined. To further characterize DL-TR-GSM, we fully derive the computational co…

Understanding how linear and nonlinear impairments accumulate during propagation in an optical fibre link in essential to solve this problem. Here we preset a study on t…
Inspired by the anisotropy of Doppler effect with wave propagations, we propose a new method to leverage one information symbol serving two users located in two geometrically orthogonal directions. Specifically in broadband wireless communication, we use multiple antennas with the proposed signal switching method to emulate a moving emission source and yield the frequency shift, referred to as Quasi Doppler effect, which is converted to the discrete phase modulation. Further, using this discrete modulated phase can adjust the phase of one transmit symbol in achieving two different phases in di…
In this paper, we discuss the design rationale and guidelines to build magnet-less circulators based on spatio-temporal modulation of resonant junctions consisting of first-order bandstop filters connected in a delta topology. Without modulation, the junction does not allow transmission between its ports, however, when the natural oscillation frequencies of the constituent LC filters are modulated in time with a suitable phase pattern, a synthetic angular-momentum bias can be effectively imparted to the junction and a transmission window opens at one of the output ports, thus realizing a circu…

This paper provides a novel learning-based approach towards such wireless network design. To that end, a parametric model of a practical energy harvester, accounting for various sources of nonlinearities, is proposed using a nonlinear regression algorithm applied over collected real …
A novel rate splitting space division multiple access (SDMA) scheme based on grouped code index modulation (GrCIM) is proposed for the sixth generation (6G) downlink transmission. The proposed RSMA-GrCIM scheme transmits information to multiple user equipments (UEs) through the space division multiple access (SDMA) technique, and exploits code index modulation for rate splitting. Since the CIM scheme conveys information bits via the index of the selected Walsh code and binary phase shift keying (BPSK) signal, our RSMA scheme transmits the private messages of each user through the indices, and …
In this paper, we discuss the feasibility of creating an UltraSound (US) communication circuit to wireless transmit outside the body diagnostic information from multiplexed biosensors chip built on the top layer of a drinkable CMOS Body Dust cube. The system requires to be small enough (lateral size of less than 100 um) to mimic the typical size of a larger blood cell (diameter around 30 um for white cells) and so support free circulation of the cube in human tissues. The second constraint came from the low-power consumption requirement, with the energy provided by an external US base station.…

In this paper, we propose a novel integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) transmission framework based on the spatially-spread orthogonal time frequency space (SS-OTFS) modulation by considering the fact that communication channel strengths cannot be directly obtained from radar sensing. We first propose the concept of SS-OTFS modulation, where the key novelty is the angular domain discretization enabled by the spatial-spreading/de-spreading. This discretization gives rise to simple and insightful effective models for both radar sensing and communication, which result in simplified designs…
Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a new paradigm that has great potential to achieve cost-effective, energy-efficient information modulation for wireless transmission, by the ability to change the reflection coefficients of the unit cells of a programmable metasurface. Nevertheless, the electromagnetic responses of the RISs are usually only phase-adjustable, which considerably limits the achievable rate of RIS-based transmitters. In this paper, we propose an RIS architecture to achieve amplitude-and-phase-varying modulation, which facilitates the design of multiple-input multiple-out…
The root raised-cosine pulse commonly used in linear digital modulations yields exactly two intersymbol interference components from the preceding and the subsequent data symbols, provided that the roll-off factor is $100\%$ and the modulation packing factor is set to $50\%$. This can be exploited to symmetrically multiplex two data streams of transmitted symbols. Hence, the proposed scheme is referred to as pulse-shape binary multiplex modulation. The demodulation of the two multiplexed data streams at the receiver can be aided by making the streams mutually orthogonal. It can be achieved by …

The coaxial cables commonly used to connect RF coil arrays with the control console of an MRI scanner are susceptible to electromagnetic coupling. As the number of RF channel increases, such coupling could result in severe heating and pose a safety concern. Non-conductive transmission solutions based on fiber-optic cables are considered to be one of the alternatives, but are limited by the high dynamic range ($>80$~dB) of typical MRI signals. A new digital fiber-optic transmission system based on delta-sigma modulation (DSM) is developed to address this problem. A DSM-based optical link is pro…

The nonlinear Fourier transform (NFT) decomposes waveforms propagating through optical fiber into nonlinear degrees of freedom, which are preserved during transmission. By encoding information on the nonlinear spectrum, a transmission scheme inherently compatible with the nonlinear fiber is obtained. Despite potential advantages, the periodic NFT (PNFT) has been studied less compared to its counterpart based on vanishing boundary conditions, due to the mathematical complexity of the inverse transform. In this paper we extract the theory of the algebrogeometric integration method underlying the…
