We study a self-interacting scalar field theory coupled to gravity and are interested in spherically symmetric solutions with a regular origin surrounded by a horizon. For a scalar potential containing a barrier, and using the most general spherically symmetric ansatz, we show that in addition to the known static, oscillating solutions discussed earlier in the literature there exist new classes of solutions which appear in the strong field case. For these solutions the spatial sphere shrinks either beyond the horizon, implying a collapsing universe outside of the cosmological horizon, or it shrinks already inside of the horizon, implying the existence of a black hole surrounding the scalar lump in all directions. Crucial for the existence of all such solutions is the presence of a scalar field potential with a barrier that satisfies the swampland conjectures.
We study generalisations of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter solution in the presence of a scalar field with a potential barrier. These static, spherically symmetric solutions have two horizons, in between which the scalar interpolates at least once across the potential barrier, thus developing a lump. In part, we recover solutions discussed earlier in the literature and for those we clarify their properties. But we also find a new class of solutions in which the scalar lump curves the spacetime sufficiently strongly so as to change the nature of the erstwhile cosmological horizon into an additiona…
We study the gravitational field sourced by localized scalar fields (lumps) in higher-derivative theories of gravity. By working in a static and spherically symmetric configuration, we find the linearized spacetime metrics generated by scalar lumps for several Lagrangians: the vanishing potential, i.e. free massive scalar field, a polynomial potential, and the tachyon potential in open string field theory. We perform the analysis for different theories of gravity: Einstein's general relativity, four-derivative gravity, and ghost-free nonlocal gravity. We discuss the limit of validity of our an…
In this work we consider the scalar field model with a false vacuum proposed by A. T. Avelar, D. Bazeia, L. Losano and R. Menezes, Eur. Phys. J. C 55, 133-143 (2008). The model depends on a parameter $s>0$. The model has unstable nontopological lump solutions with a bell shape for small $s$, acquiring a flat plateau around the maximum for large $s$. For $s\to\infty$ the $ϕ^4$ model is recovered. We show that for $s\gtrsim 2$ the lump is metastable with the only negative mode very close to zero. Metastable lumps can propagate and survive long enough to produce dynamical effects. Due to their si…
We establish a no inner-horizon theorem for black holes with charged scalar hairs. Considering a general gravitational theory with a charged scalar field, we prove that there exists no inner Cauchy horizon for both spherical and planar black holes with non-trivial scalar hair. The hairy black holes approach to a spacelike singularity at late interior time. This result is independent of the form of scalar potentials as well as the asymptotic boundary of spacetimes. We prove that the geometry near the singularity takes a universal Kasner form when the kinetic term of the scalar hair dominates, w…
We prove a no Cauchy horizon theorem for general nonlinear electrodynamics black holes with charged scalar hairs. By constructing a radially conserved charged, we show that there is no inner Cauchy horizon for both spherical and planar symmetric cases, independent of the form of scalar potential and nonlinear electrodynamics. After imposing the null energy condition, we are also able to rule out the existence of the Cauchy horizon for the hyperbolic black holes. We take the Born-Infeld black hole as a concrete example to study the interior dynamics beyond the event horizon. When the contributi…
Recently, a no inner (Cauchy) horizon theorem for static black holes with non-trivial scalar hairs has been proved in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theories. In this paper, we extend the theorem to the static black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-Horndeski theories. We study the black hole interior geometry for some exact solutions and find that the spacetime has a (space-like) curvature singularity where the black hole mass gets an extremum and the Hawking temperature vanishes. We discuss further extensions of the theorem, including general Horndeski theories from disformal transformations.
We study the zeroth law for Killing horizon in scalar-hairy Lovelock gravity, and show that the surface gravity of a general Killing horizon in the scalar-hairy Lovelock gravity is constant, provided that the dominant energy condition is obeyed by the matter field.
