We observe a novel type of shear banding in the rheology of thixotropic yield-stress fluids that is due to the coupling of both non-locality and thixotropy. The latter is known to lead to shear banding even in homogeneous stress fields, but the bands observed in the presence of non-local effects appear different as the shear rate varies continuously over the shear band. Here, we introduce a simple non-local model for the shear banding (NL-SB), and we implement it for the analysis of micron-scale rheo-MRI velocimetry measurements of a milk microgel suspension in a cone-and-plate geometry. The proposed NL-SB model accurately quantifies the cooperativity length and yields values in the order of the aggregate size in the microgel.

We assess the possibility of shear banding of semidilute rod-like colloidal suspensions under steady shear ow very close to the isotropic-nematic spinodal, using a combination of rheology, small angle neutron scattering, and laser Doppler velocimetry. Recent experimental techniques used to investigate shear banding are reviewed. After recalling the rheological signature of shear-banded flows, we summarize the various tools for measuring locally the microstructure and the velocity field under shear. A few results are extracted from current works to illustrate open questions and directions for future research.
Based on numerical modeling with the diffusive Giesekus constitutive equation, a recent Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 138002 (2018), arXiv:1801.08798] claimed that the experimental reports of shear banding in entangled polymeric fluids were due to the disturbances from the sample edge. The conclusion that true bulk shear banding is precluded in the presence of edge effects is at odds with many past experimental, theoretical, numerical, and computer simulation studies. We have developed a realistic simulation of 2D dry foams under quasi-static shear. After a short transient, a shear-banding instability is observed. These results are compared with measurements obtained on real 2D (confined) foams. The numerical model allows us to exhibit the mechanical response of the material to a single plastication event. From the analysis of this elastic propagator, we propose a scenario for the onset and stability of the flow localization process in foams, which should remain valid for most athermal amorphous systems under creep flow.
We study the dynamics of the Taylor-Couette flow of shear banding wormlike micelles. We focus on the high shear rate branch of the flow curve and show that for sufficiently high Weissenberg numbers, this branch becomes unstable. This instability is strongly sub-critical and is associated with a shear stress jump. We find that this increase of the flow resistance is related to the nucleation of turbulence. We report on the spatio-temporal dynamics of the interface in shear-banding flow of a wormlike micellar system (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and sodium nitrate in water) during a start-up experiment. Using the scattering properties of the induced structures, we demonstrate the existence of an instability of the interface between bands along the vorticity direction. Different regimes of spatio-temporal dynamics of the interface are indentified along the stress plateau. We build a model based on the flow symetry which qualitatively describes the observed patterns.

We study the emergence of a yield stress in dense suspensions of non-Brownian particles, by combining local velocity and concentration measurements using Magnetic Resonance Imaging with macroscopic rheometric experiments. We have generated a novel form of shear banding in a 2D foam and measured the relative magnitude of drag forces on soap films at different lubrication layers. We injected air part way along a flowing bubble field in a narrow Hele-Shaw cell. The injected air inflates bubbles as they flow by, and these bubbles form a shear band down the middle of the Hele-Shaw cell. This channel appears to select a height that minimizes the total dissipation. We study theoretically the formation of shear bands in time-dependent flows of polymeric and wormlike micellar surfactant fluids, focussing on the protocols of step shear stress, step shear strain (or in practice a rapid strain ramp), and shear startup, which are commonly studied experimentally. For each protocol we perform a linear stability analysis to provide a fluid-universal criterion for the onset of shear banding, following our recent Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110 (2013) 086001].
