In this paper we study the transformation of surface envelope solitons travelling over a bottom step in water of a finite depth. Using the transformation coefficients earlier derived in the linear approximation, we find the parameters of transmitted pulses and subsequent evolution of the pulses in the course of propagation. Relying on the weakly nonlinear theory, the analytic formulae are derived which describe the maximum attainable wave amplitude in the neighbourhood of the step and in the far zone. Solitary waves may be greatly amplified (within the weakly nonlinear theory formally even without a limit) when propagating from relatively shallow water to the deeper domain due to the constructive interference between the newly emerging envelope solitons and the residual quasi-linear waves. The theoretical results are in a good agreement with the data of direct numerical modelling of soliton transformation. In particular, more than double wave amplification is demonstrated in the performed simulations.
The observation of a wave group persisting for more than 200 periods in the direct numerical simulation of nonlinear unidirectional irregular water waves in deep water is discussed. The simulation conditions are characterized by parameters realistic for broad-banded waves in the sea. The group is identified by the solution of the associated scattering problem for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation as the intense envelope soliton with remarkably stable parameters. Most of extreme waves occur on top of this group, resulting in higher and longer rogue wave events.
Soliton and breather solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) are known to model localized structures in nonlinear dispersive media such as on the water surface. One of the conditions for an accurate propagation of such exact solutions is the proper generation of the exact initial phase-shift profile in the carrier wave, as defined by the NLSE envelope at a specific time or location. Here, we show experimentally the significance of such initial exact phase excitation during the hydrodynamic propagation of localized envelope solitons and breathers, which modulate a plane wave of c…
The propagation of surface water waves interacting with a current and an uneven bottom is studied. Such a situation is typical for ocean waves where the winds generate currents in the top layer of the ocean. The role of the bottom topography is taken into account since it also influences the local wave and current patterns. Specific scaling of the variables is selected which leads to approximations of Boussinesq and KdV types. The arising KdV equation with variable coefficients, dependent on the bottom topography, is studied numerically when the initial condition is in the form of the one soli…
We consider the high-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation derived earlier by Sedletsky [Ukr. J. Phys. 48(1), 82 (2003)] for the first-harmonic envelope of slowly modulated gravity waves on the surface of finite-depth irrotational, inviscid, and incompressible fluid with flat bottom. This equation takes into account the third-order dispersion and cubic nonlinear dispersive terms. We rewrite this equation in dimensionless form featuring only one dimensionless parameter $kh$, where $k$ is the carrier wavenumber and $h$ is the undisturbed fluid depth. We show that one-soliton solutions of the clas…
The Galilean transformation is a universal operation connecting the coordinates of a dynamical system, which move relative to each other with a constant speed. In the context of exact solutions of the universal nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE), inducing a Galilean velocity (GV) to the pulse involves a frequency shift to satisfy the symmetry of the wave equation. As such, the Galilean transformation has been deemed to be not applicable to wave groups in nonlinear dispersive media. In this paper, we demonstrate that in a wave tank generated Galilean transformed envelope and Peregrine solito…
We describe how to control the motion -- both speed and propagation direction -- of a nonlinear traveling wave in real time via soliton management with time-varying dispersion/diffusion and loss/gain terms. When carried out subject to certain parameter constraints we derive, the approach allows for real-time manipulation of wave motion without compromising the structure or stability of the wave, maintaining strict adiabaticity in time. This makes our approach a promising tool for physical systems which admit a degree of control through adjustable dispersion and loss/gain terms, including probl…
We study the effects of an uneven bottom on the internal wave propagation in the presence of stratification and underlying non-uniform currents. Thus, the presented models incorporate vorticity (wave-current interactions), geophysical effects (Coriolis force) and a variable bathymetry. An example of the physical situation described above is well illustrated by the equatorial internal waves in the presence of the Equatorial Undercurrent (EUC). We find that the interface (physically coinciding with the thermocline and the pycnocline) satisfies in the long wave approximation a KdV-mKdV type equat…
The paper's main goal is to compare the motion of solitary surface waves resulting from two similar but slightly different approaches. In the first approach, the numerical evolution of soliton surface waves moving over the uneven bottom is obtained using single wave equations. In the second approach, the numerical evolution of the same initial conditions is obtained by the solution of a coupled set of the Boussinesq equations for the same Euler equations system. We discuss four physically relevant cases of relationships between small parameters $α,β,δ$. For the flat bottom, these cases imply t…
This article discusses a limiting behavior of breather solutions of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. These breathers belong to the families of solitons on a non-vanishing and constant background, where the continuous-wave envelope serves as a pedestal. The rational Peregrine soliton acts as a limiting behavior of the other two breather solitons, i.e., the Kuznetsov-Ma breather and Akhmediev soliton. Albeit with a phase shift, the latter becomes a nonlinear extension of the homoclinic orbit waveform corresponding to an unstable mode in the modulational instability phenomenon. …
Rogue waves are abnormally large waves which appear unexpectedly and have attracted considerable attention, particularly in recent years. The one space, one time (1+1) nonlinear Schrödinger equation is often used to model rogue waves; it is an envelope description of plane waves and admits the so-called Pergerine and Kuznetov-Ma soliton solutions. However, in deep water waves and certain electromagnetic systems where there are two significant transverse dimensions, the 2+1 hyperbolic nonlinear Schrodinger equation is the appropriate wave envelope description. Here we show that these rogue wave…
In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the study of wave propagation in nonlinear photonic lattices. The interplay between nonlinearity and periodicity has led researchers to manipulate light and discover new and interesting phenomena such as new classes of localized modes, usually referred to as solitons, and novel surface states that propagate robustly. A field where both nonlinearity and periodicity arises naturally is nonlinear optics. But there are other areas where waves propagating on background lattices play an important role, including photonic crystal fibers and Bos…
We consider a topological Floquet insulator realized as a honeycomb array of helical waveguides imprinted in weakly birefringent medium. The system accounts for four-wave mixing occurring at a series of resonances arising due to Floquet phase matching. Under these resonant conditions, the system sustains stable linearly polarized and metastable elliptically polarized two-component edge solitons. Coupled nonlinear equations describing evolution of the envelopes of such solitons are derived.

This paper presents specific features of solitary wave dynamics within the framework of the Ostrovsky equation with variable coefficients in relation to surface and internal waves in a rotating ocean with a variable bottom topography. For solitary waves moving toward the beach, the terminal decay caused by the rotation effect can be suppressed by the shoaling effect. Two basic examples of a bottom profile are analyzed in detail and supported by direct numerical modelling. One of them is a constant-slope bottom and the other is a specific bottom profile providing a constant amplitude solitary w…
The nonlinear scattering of a linear optical wave from a conservative soliton has been widely studied in optical fibers as a mechanism for nonlinear frequency conversion. Here we extend this analysis to consider the scattering of an externally injected probe wave from a dissipative Kerr cavity soliton circulating in a Kerr microresonator. We demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, that this nonlinear interaction can be harnessed for useful expansion of the soliton frequency comb via the formation of a secondary idler comb. We explore the physics of the process, showing that the pha…
