Crystalline defects can modify quantum interactions in solids, causing unintuitive, even favourable, properties such as quantum Hall effect or superconducting vortex pinning. Here we present another example of this notion - an unexpected unidirectional Kondo scattering in single crystals of 2H-NbS2. This manifests as a pronounced low-temperature enhancement in the out-of-plane resistivity and thermopower below 40 K, hidden for the in-plane charge transport. The anomaly can be suppressed by the c-axis-oriented magnetic field, but is unaffected by field applied along the planes. The magnetic moments originate from layers of 1T-NbS2, which inevitably form during the growth, undergoing a charge-density-wave reconstruction with each superlattice cell (David-star-shaped cluster of Nb atoms) hosting a localised spin. Our results demonstrate the unique and highly anisotropic response of a spontaneously formed Kondo lattice heterostructure, intercalated in a layered conductor.
We address the origin of the magnetic-field independent -|A| T^{1/2} term observed in the low-temperature resistivity of several As-based metallic systems of the PbFCl structure type. For the layered compound ZrAs_{1.58}Se_{0.39}, we show that vacancies in the square nets of As give rise to the low-temperature transport anomaly over a wide temperature regime of almost two decades in temperature. This low-temperature behavior is in line with the non-magnetic version of the two-channel Kondo effect, whose origin we ascribe to a dynamic Jahn-Teller effect operating at the vacancy-carrying As laye…
We analyze the magnetic and electronic properties of the quantum critical heavy fermion superconductor beta-YbAlB4, calculating the Fermi surface and the angular dependence of the extremal orbits relevant to the de Haas--van Alphen measurements. Using a combination of the realistic materials modeling and single-ion crystal field analysis, we are led to propose a layered Kondo lattice model for this system, in which two dimensional boron layers are Kondo coupled via interlayer Yb moments in a $J_{z}=\pm 5/2$ state. This model fits the measured single ion magnetic susceptibility and predicts a s…
We investigate the effect of disorder on the dynamical spectrum of layered $f$-electron systems. With random dilution of $f$-sites in a single Kondo insulating layer, we explore the range and extent to which Kondo hole incoherence can penetrate into adjacent layers. We consider three cases of neighboring layers: band insulator, Kondo insulator and simple metal. The disorder-induced spectral weight transfer, used here for quantification of the proximity effect, decays algebraically with distance from the boundary layer. Further, we show that the spectral weight transfer is highly dependent on t…
By means of a specific heat ($C$) and electrical resistivity ($\varrho$) study, we give evidence of a pronounced Fermi liquid (FL) behavior with sizable mass renormalization, $m^{\ast}/m = 30$, up to unusually high temperatures $\sim$70 K in the layered system Cu$_{2/3}$V$_{1/3}$V$_2$S$_4$. At low temperature, a marked upturn of both $C$ and $\varrho$ is suppressed by magnetic field, which suggests a picture of Kondo coupling between conduction electrons in the VS$_2$ layers and impurity spins of the V$^{3+}$ ions located between layers. This picture opens the possibility of controlling electr…
Since the discovery of graphene, a tremendous amount of two dimensional (2D) materials have surfaced. Their electronic properties can usually be well understood without considering correlations between electrons. On the other hand, strong electronic correlations are known to give rise to a variety of exotic properties and new quantum phases, for instance, high temperature superconductivity, heavy fermions and quantum spin liquids. The study of these phenomena has been one of the main focuses of condensed matter physics. There is a strong incentive to introduce electronic correlations into 2D m…
We discuss the properties of layered Anderson/Kondo lattices with metallic electrons confined in 2D xy planes and local spins in insulating layers forming chains in z direction. Each spin in this model possesses its own 2D Kondo cloud, so that the Nozieres' exhaustion problem does not occur. The excitation spectrum of the model is gapless both in charge and spin sectors. The disordered phases and possible experimental realizations of the model are briefly discussed.
We study a layered three-dimensional heterostructure in which two types of Kondo insulators are stacked alternatingly. One of them is the topological Kondo insulator SmB 6 , the other one an isostructural Kondo insulator AB 6 , where A is a rare-earth element, e.g., Eu, Yb, or Ce. We find that if the latter orders ferromagnetically, the heterostructure generically becomes a magnetic Weyl Kondo semimetal, while antiferromagnetic order can yield a magnetic Dirac Kondo semimetal. We detail both scenarios with general symmetry considerations as well as concrete tight-binding calcu-lations and show…
The compound SmB$_6$ is the best established realization of a topological Kondo insulator, in which a topological insulator state is obtained through Kondo coherence. Recent studies have found evidence that the surface of SmB$_6$ hosts ferromagnetic domains, creating an intrinsic platform for unidirectional ballistic transport at the domain boundaries. Here, surface-sensitive X-ray absorption (XAS) and bulk-sensitive resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra are measured at the Sm N$_{4,5}$-edge, and used to evaluate electronic symmetries, excitations and temperature dependence near t…
We show that in layered systems with electronic phase separation tendency, the long-range Coulomb interaction can drive the spontaneous formation of unidirectional superlattices of electronic charge in a completely homogeneous crystalline background. In this self-organized electronic heterostructure, the ratio among the number of crystalline planes in the minority and majority electronic phases corresponds to Farey fractions with the superlattice period controlled by the background charge density and the frustrating Coulomb interaction strength. The phase diagram displays Arnold tongues obeyin…
We analyze the Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}(ω)$ of a charge ordered state with momentum $\mathbf{Q}=(0,2Q)$ and calculate the intrinsic contribution to the Kerr angle $Θ_K$ using the fully reconstructed tight-binding band structure for layered cuprates beyond the low energy hot spots model and particle hole symmetry. We show that such a unidirectional charge density wave (CDW), which breaks time reversal symmetry as recently put forward by Wang and Chubukov [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 90}, 035149 (2014)], leads to a nonzero polar Kerr effect as observed experimentally. In addition, we model a fluctuating …
The synthetic organic compound lambda-(BETS)2FeCl4 undergoes successive transitions from an antiferromagnetic insulator to a metal and then to a superconductor as a magnetic field is increased. We use a Hubbard-Kondo model to clarify the role of the Fe(3+) magnetic ions in these phase transitions. In the high-field regime, the magnetic field acting on the electron spins is compensated by the exchange field He due to the magnetic ions. This suggests that the field-induced superconducting state is the same as the zero-field superconducting state which occurs under pressure or when the Fe(3+) ion…
The temperature ($T$) - magnetic field ($H$) phase diagram for the tetragonal layered compound CeSbSe, is determined from magnetization, specific heat, and electrical resistivity measurements. This system exhibits complex magnetic ordering at $T_{\rm{M}}$ $=$ 3 K and the application of a magnetic field results in a cascade of magnetically ordered states for $H$ $\lesssim$ 1.8 T which are characterized by fractional integer size steps: i.e., a possible Devil's staircase is observed. Electrical transport measurements show a weak temperature dependence and large residual resistivity which suggest…

Some recent neutron scattering works on CeRhIn5 and Ce2RhIn8, together with related resistivity and specific heat measurements, are summarized. In spite of its layered crystal structure, CeRhIn5 is shown to be 3-dimensional both magnetically and in transport. We also find that the Fisher-Langer behavior is closely followed in CeRhIn5. This may circumvent the Kondo lattice model and support applying established Fermi-liquid superconductivity theory to heavy fermion superconductors.
The anisotropy of the electron scattering rate and lifetime $Γ_\mathbf{p}=1/τ_\mathbf{p}$ observed by Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) is evaluated using $s$-$d$ Kondo-Zener exchange Hamiltonian used previously to describe superconducting properties of high-$T_c$ cuprates; for correlation between critical temperature $T_c$ and BCS coupling constant, for example. The performed qualitative analysis reveals that "cold spots" correspond to nodal regions of the superconducting phase where the superconducting gap is zero, because the exchange interaction is annulled. Vice versa, "ho…
