We present theoretically calculated optical functions for Cu$_2$O quantum well (QW) with Rydberg excitons in an external, homogeneous electric field parallel to the QW planes for the energy region above the gap, suitable to observe the Franz-Keldysh (FK) oscillations. We quantitatively describe the amplitudes and periodicity of FK modulations and the influence of both Rydberg excitons and confinement effect on this phenomenon.
High-quality T-shaped quantum wires are fabricated by cleaved-edge overgrowth with the molecular beam epitaxy on the interface improved by a growth-interrupt high-temperature anneal. Characterization by micro-photoluminescence (PL) and PL excitation (PLE) spectroscopy at 5 K reveals high uniformity, a sharp spectral width, and a small Stokes shift of one-dimensional (1-D) excitons. The PLE spectrum for 1-D states shows a large peak of ground-state excitons and a small absorption band ascribed to 1-D continuum states with an onset at 11 meV above the exciton peak.
Being motivated by recent achievements in the rapidly developing fields of optical bound states in the continuum (BICs) and excitons in monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides, we analyze strong coupling between BICs in $\rm Ta_2O_5$ periodic photonic structures and excitons in $\rm WSe_2$ monolayers. We demonstrate that giant radiative lifetime of BICs allow to engineer the exciton-polariton lifetime enhancing it three orders of magnitude compared to a bare exciton. We show that maximal lifetime of hybrid light-matter state can be achieved at any point of $\mathbf{k}$-space by shaping …
The interaction of optically excited excitons in atomically thin semiconductors with residual doping densities leads to many-body effects which are continuously tunable by external gate voltages. Here, we develop a fully microscopic theory to describe the doping-dependent manipulation of the excitonic properties in atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides. In particular, we establish a diagonalization approach for the Schrödinger equation which characterizes the interaction of a virtual exciton with the Fermi sea of dopants. Solving this many-body Schrödinger equation provides access t…
We present a computer simulation of exciton-exciton scattering in a quantum well. Specifically, we use quantum Monte Carlo techniques to study the bound and continuum states of two excitons in a 10 nm wide GaAs/Al$_{0.3}$Ga$_{0.7}$As quantum well. From these bound and continuum states we extract the momentum-dependent phase shifts for s-wave scattering. A surprising finding of this work is that a commonly studied effective-mass mode for excitons in a 10 nm quantum well actually supports two bound biexciton states. The second, weakly bound state may dramatically enhance exciton-exciton interact…
We present a detailed investigation of excitonic absorption in $Zn_{0.69}Cd_{0.31}Se/ZnSe$ quantum wells under the application of a perpendicular magnetic field. The large energy separation between heavy- and light-hole excitons allows us to clearly resolve and identify magneto-excitonic absorption resonant with the continuum edge of the 1S heavy-hole exciton. Experimental values of the exciton binding energy are compared with results of a theoretical model that includes the exciton-phonon interaction. The remarkable agreemeent found unambiguously indicates the predominant polaronic character …
We have found a novel mechanism of spectral broadening and dephasing in quantum dots (QDs) due to the coupling to longitudinal-optical (LO) phonons. In theory, this mechanism comes into play only if the complete manifold of exciton levels (including those in the wetting-layer continuum) is taken into account. We demonstrate this nontrivial dephasing in different types of QDs, using the exactly solvable quadratic coupling model, here generalized to an arbitrary number of excitonic states.
The electrons and excitons multiple exciton generation dynamics in two silicon clusters, or more specifically the inelastic scattering rates of electronic and excitonic states in the two silicon clusters, Si26 and Si46, are calculated using many-body Green function theory.
Exciton-polaritons resulting from the strong exciton-photon interaction stimulate the development of novel coherent light sources with low threshold, long range spatial, and temporal coherence to circumvent the ever increasing energy demands of optical communications. Polaritons from bound states in the continuum (BICs) are promising for Bose-Einstein condensation owing to their infinite quality factors that enlarge photon lifetimes and benefit polariton accumulations. However, BIC polariton condensation remains limited to cryogenic temperatures ascribed to the small exciton binding energies o…
A recent single quantum wire is of sufficient quality to reveal new details of the photoluminescence (PL) evolution with increasing electron--hole (e--h) pair density. At a pair density of 3.6 $\times$ 10$^{3}$ cm$^{-1}$, the PL is characteristic of biexcitons shifted below the exciton peak by the 2.8-meV biexciton binding. At the pair density of 1.2 $\times$ 10$^{5}$ cm$^{-1}$, the biexciton peak broadens without energy shift to an e--h plasma. At all pair densities up to 30 K, neither the exciton peak nor the one-dimensional (1D) continuum edge shows any shift. In contrast to prevailing theo…
We present a first-principles calculation of the optical properties of armchair-edged graphene nanoribbons (AGNRs) with many-electron effects included. The reduced dimensionality of the AGNRs gives rise to an enhanced electron-hole binding energy for both bright and dark exciton states (0.8-1.4 eV for GNRs with width w ~ 1.2 nm) and dramatically changes the optical spectra owing to a near complete transfer of oscillator strength to the exciton states from the continuum transitions. The characteristics of the excitons of the three distinct families of AGNRs are compared and discussed. The enhan…
We here propose a mechanism to teleport electrons between quantum dots through the transformation of a virtual bright exciton into a dark exciton. This mechanism relies on the interactions of two composite bosons: a pair of electrons with opposite spins, trapped in two dots and an electron-hole pair in a free exciton coupled to an unabsorbed pump pulse, which makes it ``bright'' but virtual. This bright exciton first turns ``dark'' by dropping its electron and stealing the trapped electron with opposite spin through an exchange Coulomb process with the trapped pair. In a second step, the dark …
We present theoretical results of the calculations of optical functions for Cu$_2$O quantum well (QW) with Rydberg excitons in an external homogeneous electric field of an arbitrary field strength. Two configurations of an external electric field perpendicular and parallel to the QW planes are considered in the energetic region for discrete excitonic states and continuum states. With the help of the real density matrix approach, which enables the derivation of the analytical expressions for the QW electro-optical functions, absorption spectra are calculated for the case of the excitation energ…
We investigate the influence of a static, uncorrelated distribution of charged impurities on the spectrum of bound excitons in the copper oxide Cu$_{\text{2}}$O. We show that the statistical distribution of Stark shifts and ionisation rates leads to the vanishing of Rydberg resonances into an apparent continuum. The appearance of additional absorption lines due to the broken rotational symmetry, together with spatially inhomogeneous Stark shifts, leads to a modification of the observed line shapes that agree qualitatively with the changes observed in the experiment.
Interlayer excitons are bound states of electrons and holes confined in separate two-dimensional layers. Due to their repulsive dipolar interaction, interlayer excitons can form a correlated liquid. If another electron-hole bilayer is present, excitons from different bilayers can exhibit mutual attraction. We study such a quadrilayer system by a hypernetted chain formalism. We compute ground state energies, pair correlation functions, and collective mode velocities as functions of the exciton densities. We estimate the critical density for the transition to a paired biexciton phase. For a stro…
We numerically investigate the odd parity states of the green exciton series in cuprous oxide. Taking into account the coupling to the yellow series and especially to the yellow continuum, the green excitons are quasi-bound resonances with a finite lifetime which cannot be described with Hermitian operators. To calculate their positions and linewidths, we use the method of complex-coordinate rotation, leading to a non-Hermitian complex eigenvalue problem. We find that the behavior of the dominant P states is very well approximated by a modified Rydberg formula using a negative quantum defect. …
An ordered state of electrons in solids in which excitons condense was proposed many years ago as a theoretical possibility but has, until recently, never been observed. We review recent studies of semiconductor bilayer systems that provide clear evidence for this phenomenon and explain why exciton condensation in the quantum Hall regime, where these experiments were performed, is as likely to occur in electron-electron bilayers as in electron-hole bilayers. In current quantum Hall exciton condensates, disorder induces mobile vortices that flow in response to a supercurrent and limit the extre…
Wave functions of heavy-hole excitons in GaAs/Al$_{0.3}$Ga$_{0.7}$As square quantum wells (QWs) of various widths are calculated by the direct numerical solution of a three-dimensional Schrödinger equation using a finite-difference scheme. These wave functions are then used to determine the exciton-exciton, exciton-electron and exciton-hole fermion exchange constants in a wide range of QW widths (5-150 nm). Additionally, the spin-dependent matrix elements of elastic exciton-exciton, exciton-electron and exciton-hole scattering are calculated. From these matrix elements, the collisional broaden…
We develop a many-body approach to the behavior of exciton bound states and the conduction electron band edge in a surrounding electron-hole plasma with a focus on the absorption spectrum of Rydberg excitons in cuprous oxide. The interplay of band edge and exciton levels is analyzed numerically, whereby the self-consistent solution is compared to the semiclassical Debye approximation. Our results provide criteria which allow to verify or rule out the different band edge models against future experimental data.
We present a method for determining correlations in a gas of indirect excitons in a semiconductor quantum well structure. The method involves subjecting the excitons to a periodic electrostatic potential that causes modulations of the exciton density and photoluminescence (PL). Experimentally measured amplitudes of energy and intensity modulations of exciton PL serve as an input to a theoretical estimate of the exciton correlation parameter and temperature. We also present a proof-of-principle demonstration of the method for determining the correlation parameter and discuss how its accuracy ca…
We theoretically study the tunnelling current of a single electron transistor (SET) under optical pumping. It found that holes in the quantum dot(QD) created by optical pumping lead to new channels for the electrons tunnelling from emitter to collector. As a consequence, an electron can tunnel through the QD via additional channels, characterized by the exciton, trion and biexciton states. The binding energy of exciton complexes can be determined by the Coulomb oscillatory tunnelling current.
Mostly optical spectroscopies are used to investigate existence of excitons, Mott transitions and other exquisite excitonic condensed phases of matter. On the other hand, electrical signatures of excitons are hardly explored. Here we examine steady state, small signal, electrical response of AlGaInP based multi-quantum well laser diodes to identify and investigate the presence of excitons in electroluminescence. This frequency dependent response shows bias activated capacitance following a phenomenological rate equation. Dynamic dependence of this response on frequency reverses after light emi…
Electron states in a quantum dot (QD) located near a 2D system of dipolar excitons are perturbed by fluctuations of the exciton density caused by the electron-exciton interaction. This results in the frequency changes of electron transitions in a QD. The frequency depends on the exciton density, as well as on the exciton gas phase state. In the present work, the shifts of the two lowest QD energy levels are found both in the normal state of the exciton system and for the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) regime.
The exciton states in strained (In,Ga)As nanorings embedded in a GaAs matrix are computed. The strain distribution is extracted from the continuum mechanical model, and the exact diagonalization approach is employed to compute the exciton states. Weak oscillations of the ground exciton state energy with the magnetic field normal to the ring are an expression of the excitonic Aharonov-Bohm effect. Those oscillations arise from anticrossings between the ground and the second exciton state and can be enhanced by increasing the ring width. Simultaneously, the oscillator strength for exciton recomb…
In this theoretical investigation we predict an unusual interaction between a discrete state and a continuum of states, which is closely related to the case of Fano-interference. It occurs in a GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs quantum well between the lowest light-hole exciton and the continuum of the second heavy-hole exciton. Unlike the typical case for Fano-resonance, the discrete state here is outside the continuum; we use uniaxial stress to tune its position with respect to the onset of the continuum. State-of-the art calculations of absorption spectra show that as the discrete state approaches the contin…
The electron, hole, and exciton g-factors and diamagnetic coefficients have been calculated using envelope-function theory for cylindrical InAs/InP quantum dots in the presence of a magnetic field parallel to the dot symmetry axis. A clear connection is established between the electron g-factor and the amplitude of the those valence-state envelope functions which possess non-zero orbital momentum associated with the envelope function. The dependence of the exciton diamagnetic coefficients on the quantum dot height is found to correlate with the energy dependence of the effective mass. Calculat…
We study the effect of elastic anisotropic biaxial strain on the light emitted by neutral excitons confined in different kinds of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). We find that the light polarization rotates by up to 80 degree and the excitonic fine structure splitting varies by several tens of $μ$eVs as the strain is varied. By means of a continuum model we mainly ascribe the observed effects to substantial changes of the hole wave function. These results show that strain-fields of a few permill magnitude are suffcient to dramatically modify the electronic structure of QDs.
The formation and various possible decay processes of neutral and charged excitonic complexes in electronic integral and fractional quantum Hall systems are discussed. The excitonic complexes are bound states of a small number of the relevant negatively and positively charged quasiparticles (e.g., conduction electrons and valence holes, reversed-spin electrons and spin holes, Laughlin quasielectrons and quasiholes, composite fermions) that occur in an electron system under specific conditions (e.g., electron density, well width, electric and magnetic fields, or hydrostatic pressure). The examp…
Moiré heterostructures are rapidly emerging as a tunable platform to study correlated electronic phenomena. Discovery of exotic quantum phases in moiré systems requires novel probes of charge and spin order. Unlike detection schemes which average over several moiré cells, local sensors can provide richer information with greater sensitivity. We study a WSe$_2$/MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterotrilayer which hosts excitons and electrons in distinct moiré lattices, and show that localized dipolar excitons are sensitive proximity charge sensors, uncovering numerous correlated electronic states at fractiona…
The Stranski-Krastanov (SK) growth-mode facilitates the self-assembly of quantum dots (QDs) using lattice-mismatched semiconductors, for instance InAs and GaAs. SK QDs are defect-free and can be embedded in heterostructures and nano-engineered devices. InAs QDs are excellent photon emitters: QD-excitons, electron-hole bound pairs, are exploited as emitters of high quality single photons for quantum communication. One significant drawback of the SK-mode is the wetting layer (WL). The WL results in a continuum rather close in energy to the QD-confined-states. The WL-states lead to unwanted scatt…

We describe theoretically novel excitons in self-assembled quantum dots interacting with a two-dimensional electron gas in the wetting layer. In the presence of the Fermi sea, the optical lines become strongly voltage-dependent. If the electron spin is nonzero, the width of optical lines is given by k_BT_K, where T_K is Kondo temperature. If the spin is zero, the exciton couples with the continuum due to Auger-like processes. This leads to anticrossings in a magnetic field. Some of the described phenomena are observed in recent experiments.
Quantum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field are known to produce the atomic Lamb shift. We here reveal their iconic signature in semiconductor physics, through the blue-shift they produce to optically bright excitons, thus lifting the energy of these excitons above their dark counterparts. The electromagnetic field here acts in its full complexity: in addition to the longitudinal part via interband \textit{virtual Coulomb} processes, the transverse part -- which has been missed up to now -- also acts via resonant and nonresonant \textit{virtual photons}. These two parts beautifully combi…
We have studied the collective properties of two-dimensional (2D) excitons immersed within a quantum well which contains 2D excitons and a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). We have also analyzed the excitations for a system of 2D dipole excitons with spatially separated electrons and holes in a pair of quantum wells (CQWs) when one of the wells contains a 2DEG. Calculations of the superfluid density and the Kosterlitz-Thouless (K-T) phase transition temperature for the 2DEG-exciton system in a quantum well have shown that the K-T transition temperature increases with increasing exciton dens…
We study conceptional problems of a photo-electron emission (PEE) process from a free exciton in insulating crystals. In this PEE process, only the electron constituting the exciton is suddenly emitted out of the crystal, while the hole constituting the exciton is still left inside and forced to be recoiled back to its original valence band. This recoil on the hole is surely reflected in the spectrum of the PEE with a statistical distribution along the momentum-energy curve of the valence band. This distribution is nothing but the square of the exciton wave function amplitude, since it shows h…
As the field of metal halide perovskites (MHP) matures, state-of-the-art techniques to measure basic properties such as the band gap and exciton binding energy continue to produce inconsistent values. This issue is persistent even for 2D MHPs wherein the large separation between exciton and continuum states should make such measurements more straightforward. In this study, we revert to the established theory of a 2D Wannier exciton in a uniform electric field to analyze the electroabsorption response of an archetypal 2D MHP system, phenethylammonium lead iodide (PEA2PbI4). The high level of ag…
Excitons with a radius of a few lattice constants can be affected by strong central-cell corrections, leading to significant deviations of the optical spectrum from the hydrogen-like Rydberg series, and also to an enhancement of the exciton mass. We present an approach to this situation based on a lattice model that incorporates the effects of a non-parabolic band structure, short distance corrections to the Coulomb interaction between electrons and holes, spin-orbit and exchange coupling. The lattice model allows for observation of the crossover from large radius Wannier to small radius Frenk…
We investigate the ground state of a balanced electron-hole system in the quantum Hall regime using mean-field theory and obtain a rich phase diagram as a function of interlayer distance d and the filling factor within a layer. We identify an excitonic condensate phase, an excitonic supersolid phase, as well as uncorrelated Wigner crystal states. We find that balanced electron-hole system exhibits a supersolid phase a wide range of filling factors, with different crystal structure ground states. We obtain the ground state stiffness in the excitonic phases and show that the phase transitions fr…
Theory of electronic and optical properties of exciton and bi-exciton complexes confined in CdSe spherical nanocrystals is presented. The electron and hole states are computed using atomistic $sp^3d^5s^*$ tight binding Hamiltonian including an effective crystal field splitting, spin-orbit interactions, and model surface passivation. The optically excited states are expanded in electron-hole configurations and the many-body spectrum is computed in the configuration-interaction approach. Results demonstrate that the low-energy electron spectrum is organized in shells ($s$, $p$, ...), whilst the …
Moiré patterns with angular mismatch in van der Waals heterostructures composed of atomically thin semiconducting materials are a fascinating platform to engineer the optically generated excitonic properties towards novel quantum phenomena. The moiré pattern as a periodic trap potential can give rise to spatially ordered zero-dimensional (0D) exciton ensembles, which offers the possibility for dense coherent quantum emitters and quantum simulation of many-body physics. The intriguing moiré exciton properties are affected by their dynamics and exciton-phonon interaction. However, the moiré exci…
The mechanisms for generation of long-lived spin coherence in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) have been studied experimentally by means of a picosecond pump-probe Kerr rotation technique. CdTe/(Cd,Mg)Te quantum wells with a diluted 2DEG were investigated. The strong Coulomb interaction between electrons and holes, which results in large binding energies of neutral excitons and negatively charged excitons (trions), allows one to address selectively the exciton or trion states by resonant optical excitation. Different scenarios of spin coherence generation were analyzed theoretically, amon…
The optical properties of the two-dimensional (2D) crystals are dominated by tightly bound electron-hole pairs (excitons) and lattice vibration modes (phonons). The exciton-phonon interaction is fundamentally important to understand the optical properties of 2D materials and thus help develop emerging 2D crystal based optoelectronic devices. Here, we presented the excitonic resonant Raman scattering (RRS) spectra of few-layer WS$_2$ excited by 11 lasers lines covered all of A, B and C exciton transition energies at different sample temperatures from 4 to 300 K. As a result, we are not only abl…
