The main challenge of dynamic texture synthesis lies in how to maintain spatial and temporal consistency in synthesized videos. The major drawback of existing dynamic texture synthesis models comes from poor treatment of the long-range texture correlation and motion information. To address this problem, we incorporate a new loss term, called the Shifted Gram loss, to capture the structural and long-range correlation of the reference texture video. Furthermore, we introduce a frame sampling strategy to exploit long-period motion across multiple frames. With these two new techniques, the application scope of existing texture synthesis models can be extended. That is, they can synthesize not only homogeneous but also structured dynamic texture patterns. Thorough experimental results are provided to demonstrate that our proposed dynamic texture synthesis model offers state-of-the-art visual performance.
Texture synthesis has proven successful at imitating a wide variety of textures. Adding additional constraints (in the form of a low-resolution version of the texture to be synthesized) makes it possible to use texture synthesis methods for texture superresolution.

We deal with the controllable person image synthesis task which aims to re-render a human from a reference image with explicit control over body pose and appearance. Observing that person images are highly structured, we propose to generate desired images by extracting and distributing semantic entities of reference images. To achieve this goal, a neural texture extraction and distribution operation based on double attention is described. This operation first extracts semantic neural textures from reference feature maps. Then, it distributes the extracted neural textures according to the spati…
Texture synthesis is widely used in the field of computer graphics, vision, and image processing. In the present paper, a texture synthesis algorithm is proposed for near-regular natural textures with the help of a representative periodic pattern extracted from the input textures using distance matching function. Local texture statistics is then analyzed against global texture statistics for non-overlapping windows of size same as periodic pattern size and a representative periodic pattern is extracted from the image and used for texture synthesis, while preserving the global regularity and vi…

We investigate data-driven texture modeling via analysis and synthesis with generative adversarial networks. For network training and testing, we have compiled a diverse set of spatially homogeneous textures, ranging from stochastic to regular. We adopt StyleGAN3 for synthesis and demonstrate that it produces diverse textures beyond those represented in the training data. For texture analysis, we propose GAN inversion using a novel latent domain reconstruction consistency criterion for synthesized textures, and iterative refinement with Gramian loss for real textures. We propose perceptual pro…
We propose a recurrent variational auto-encoder for texture synthesis. A novel loss function, FLTBNK, is used for training the texture synthesizer. It is rotational and partially color invariant loss function. Unlike L2 loss, FLTBNK explicitly models the correlation of color intensity between pixels. Our texture synthesizer generates neighboring tiles to expand a sample texture and is evaluated using various texture patterns from Describable Textures Dataset (DTD). We perform both quantitative and qualitative experiments with various loss functions to evaluate the performance of our proposed l…
A non-parametric interpretable texture synthesis method, called the NITES method, is proposed in this work. Although automatic synthesis of visually pleasant texture can be achieved by deep neural networks nowadays, the associated generation models are mathematically intractable and their training demands higher computational cost. NITES offers a new texture synthesis solution to address these shortcomings. NITES is mathematically transparent and efficient in training and inference. The input is a single exemplary texture image. The NITES method crops out patches from the input and analyzes th…
We provide a new model for texture synthesis based on a multiscale, multilayer feature extractor. Within the model, textures are represented by a set of statistics computed from ReLU wavelet coefficients at different layers, scales and orientations. A new image is synthesized by matching the target statistics via an iterative projection algorithm. We explain the necessity of the different types of pre-defined wavelet filters used in our model and the advantages of multilayer structures for image synthesis. We demonstrate the power of our model by generating samples of high quality textures and…
We introduce a two-stream model for dynamic texture synthesis. Our model is based on pre-trained convolutional networks (ConvNets) that target two independent tasks: (i) object recognition, and (ii) optical flow prediction. Given an input dynamic texture, statistics of filter responses from the object recognition ConvNet encapsulate the per-frame appearance of the input texture, while statistics of filter responses from the optical flow ConvNet model its dynamics. To generate a novel texture, a randomly initialized input sequence is optimized to match the feature statistics from each stream of…

Hallucinating high frequency image details in single image super-resolution is a challenging task. Traditional super-resolution methods tend to produce oversmoothed output images due to the ambiguity in mapping between low and high resolution patches. We build on recent success in deep learning based texture synthesis and show that this rich feature space can facilitate successful transfer and synthesis of high frequency image details to improve the visual quality of super-resolution results on a wide variety of natural textures and images.
We tackle the problem of texture synthesis in the setting where many input images are given and a large-scale output is required. We build on recent generative adversarial networks and propose two extensions in this paper. First, we propose an algorithm to combine outputs of GANs trained on a smaller resolution to produce a large-scale plausible texture map with virtually no boundary artifacts. Second, we propose a user interface to enable artistic control. Our quantitative and qualitative results showcase the generation of synthesized high-resolution maps consisting of up to hundreds of megap…

Recent progresses on deep discriminative and generative modeling have shown promising results on texture synthesis. However, existing feed-forward based methods trade off generality for efficiency, which suffer from many issues, such as shortage of generality (i.e., build one network per texture), lack of diversity (i.e., always produce visually identical output) and suboptimality (i.e., generate less satisfying visual effects). In this work, we focus on solving these issues for improved texture synthesis. We propose a deep generative feed-forward network which enables efficient synthesis of m…

As image generation techniques mature, there is a growing interest in explainable representations that are easy to understand and intuitive to manipulate. In this work, we turn to co-occurrence statistics, which have long been used for texture analysis, to learn a controllable texture synthesis model. We propose a fully convolutional generative adversarial network, conditioned locally on co-occurrence statistics, to generate arbitrarily large images while having local, interpretable control over the texture appearance. To encourage fidelity to the input condition, we introduce a novel differen…

This paper proposes Markovian Generative Adversarial Networks (MGANs), a method for training generative neural networks for efficient texture synthesis. While deep neural network approaches have recently demonstrated remarkable results in terms of synthesis quality, they still come at considerable computational costs (minutes of run-time for low-res images). Our paper addresses this efficiency issue. Instead of a numerical deconvolution in previous work, we precompute a feed-forward, strided convolutional network that captures the feature statistics of Markovian patches and is able to directly…

Here we demonstrate that the feature space of random shallow convolutional neural networks (CNNs) can serve as a surprisingly good model of natural textures. Patches from the same texture are consistently classified as being more similar then patches from different textures. Samples synthesized from the model capture spatial correlations on scales much larger then the receptive field size, and sometimes even rival or surpass the perceptual quality of state of the art texture models (but show less variability). The current state of the art in parametric texture synthesis relies on the multi-lay…

Texturing is a fundamental process in computer graphics. Texture is leveraged to enhance the visualization outcome for a 3D scene. In many cases a texture image cannot cover a large 3D model surface because of its small resolution. Conventional techniques like repeating, mirror repeating or clamp to edge do not yield visually acceptable results. Deep learning based texture synthesis has proven to be very effective in such cases. All deep texture synthesis methods trying to create larger resolution textures are limited in terms of GPU memory resources. In this paper, we propose a novel approach…
Gatys et al. (2015) showed that pair-wise products of features in a convolutional network are a very effective representation of image textures. We propose a simple modification to that representation which makes it possible to incorporate long-range structure into image generation, and to render images that satisfy various symmetry constraints. We show how this can greatly improve rendering of regular textures and of images that contain other kinds of symmetric structure. We also present applications to inpainting and season transfer.

In this paper, we investigate deep image synthesis guided by sketch, color, and texture. Previous image synthesis methods can be controlled by sketch and color strokes but we are the first to examine texture control. We allow a user to place a texture patch on a sketch at arbitrary locations and scales to control the desired output texture. Our generative network learns to synthesize objects consistent with these texture suggestions. To achieve this, we develop a local texture loss in addition to adversarial and content loss to train the generative network. We conduct experiments using sketche…
This paper presents a significant improvement for the synthesis of texture images using convolutional neural networks (CNNs), making use of constraints on the Fourier spectrum of the results. More precisely, the texture synthesis is regarded as a constrained optimization problem, with constraints conditioning both the Fourier spectrum and statistical features learned by CNNs. In contrast with existing methods, the presented method inherits from previous CNN approaches the ability to depict local structures and fine scale details, and at the same time yields coherent large scale structures, eve…
Generative adversarial networks (GANs) are a recent approach to train generative models of data, which have been shown to work particularly well on image data. In the current paper we introduce a new model for texture synthesis based on GAN learning. By extending the input noise distribution space from a single vector to a whole spatial tensor, we create an architecture with properties well suited to the task of texture synthesis, which we call spatial GAN (SGAN). To our knowledge, this is the first successful completely data-driven texture synthesis method based on GANs. Our method has the fo…

Gatys et al. recently demonstrated that deep networks can generate beautiful textures and stylized images from a single texture example. However, their methods requires a slow and memory-consuming optimization process. We propose here an alternative approach that moves the computational burden to a learning stage. Given a single example of a texture, our approach trains compact feed-forward convolutional networks to generate multiple samples of the same texture of arbitrary size and to transfer artistic style from a given image to any other image. The resulting networks are remarkably light-we…

This paper addresses the problem of interpolating visual textures. We formulate this problem by requiring (1) by-example controllability and (2) realistic and smooth interpolation among an arbitrary number of texture samples. To solve it we propose a neural network trained simultaneously on a reconstruction task and a generation task, which can project texture examples onto a latent space where they can be linearly interpolated and projected back onto the image domain, thus ensuring both intuitive control and realistic results. We show our method outperforms a number of baselines according to …

Deep neural networks have been successfully applied to problems such as image segmentation, image super-resolution, coloration and image inpainting. In this work we propose the use of convolutional neural networks (CNN) for image inpainting of large regions in high-resolution textures. Due to limited computational resources processing high-resolution images with neural networks is still an open problem. Existing methods separate inpainting of global structure and the transfer of details, which leads to blurry results and loss of global coherence in the detail transfer step. Based on advances i…

With the large-scale explosion of images and videos over the internet, efficient hashing methods have been developed to facilitate memory and time efficient retrieval of similar images. However, none of the existing works uses hashing to address texture image retrieval mostly because of the lack of sufficiently large texture image databases. Our work addresses this problem by developing a novel deep learning architecture that generates binary hash codes for input texture images. For this, we first pre-train a Texture Synthesis Network (TSN) which takes a texture patch as input and outputs an e…

Here we present a parametric model for dynamic textures. The model is based on spatiotemporal summary statistics computed from the feature representations of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) trained on object recognition. We demonstrate how the model can be used to synthesise new samples of dynamic textures and to predict motion in simple movies.
Conventional CNNs for texture synthesis consist of a sequence of (de)-convolution and up/down-sampling layers, where each layer operates locally and lacks the ability to capture the long-term structural dependency required by texture synthesis. Thus, they often simply enlarge the input texture, rather than perform reasonable synthesis. As a compromise, many recent methods sacrifice generalizability by training and testing on the same single (or fixed set of) texture image(s), resulting in huge re-training time costs for unseen images. In this work, based on the discovery that the assembling/st…

Exemplar-based texture synthesis is the process of generating, from an input sample, new texture images of arbitrary size and which are perceptually equivalent to the sample. The two main approaches are statistics-based methods and patch re-arrangement methods. In the first class, a texture is characterized by a statistical signature; then, a random sampling conditioned to this signature produces genuinely different texture images. The second class boils down to a clever "copy-paste" procedure, which stitches together large regions of the sample. Hybrid methods try to combine ideas from both a…

The field of texture synthesis has witnessed important progresses over the last years, most notably through the use of Convolutional Neural Networks. However, neural synthesis methods still struggle to reproduce large scale structures, especially with high resolution textures. To address this issue, we first introduce a simple multi-resolution framework that efficiently accounts for long-range dependency. Then, we show that additional statistical constraints further improve the reproduction of textures with strong regularity. This can be achieved by constraining both the Gram matrices of a neu…

In this paper, we present a conditional generative ConvNet (cgCNN) model which combines deep statistics and the probabilistic framework of generative ConvNet (gCNN) model. Given a text…

The recent work of Gatys et al., who characterized the style of an image by the statistics of convolutional neural network filters, ignited a renewed interest in the texture generation and image stylization problems. While their image generation technique uses a slow optimization process, recently several authors have proposed to learn generator neural networks that can produce similar outputs in one quick forward pass. While generator networks are promising, they are still inferior in visual quality and diversity compared to generation-by-optimization. In this work, we advance them in two sig…

Single image super-resolution is the task of inferring a high-resolution image from a single low-resolution input. Traditionally, the performance of algorithms for this task is measured using pixel-wise reconstruction measures such as peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) which have been shown to correlate poorly with the human perception of image quality. As a result, algorithms minimizing these metrics tend to produce over-smoothed images that lack high-frequency textures and do not look natural despite yielding high PSNR values. We propose a novel application of automated texture synthesis in c…

We form it as an optimization problem that identifies the potential patches for synthesis from an coarse-to-fine manner. We address the problem of computing a textural loss based on the statistics extracted from the feature activations of a convolutional neural network optimized for object recognition (e.g. VGG-19). In this paper, we address the problem of texture representation for 3D shapes for the challenging and underexplored tasks of texture transfer and synthesis. Previous works either apply spherical texture maps which may lead to large distortions, or use continuous texture fields that yield smooth outputs lacking details. We argue that the traditional way of representing textures with images and linking them to a 3D mesh via UV mapping is more desirable, since synthesizing 2D images is a well-studied problem. We propose AUV-Net which learns to embed 3D surfaces into a 2D aligned UV space, by mapp…

To ensure a dataset coverage, we use an adversarial loss function that penalizes for incorrect reproductions of a given texture. Image-based 3D shape retrieval (IBSR) aims to find the corresponding 3D shape of a given 2D image from a large 3D shape database. The common routine is to map 2D images and 3D shapes into an embedding space and define (or learn) a shape similarity measure. While metric learning with some adaptation techniques seems to be a natural solution to shape similarity learning, the performance is often unsatisfactory for fine-grained shape retrieval. In the paper, we identify the source of the poor performance and propose a practical solution to this problem. We find that the shape difference between a…
