Accurate mass-loss rates and terminal velocities from massive stars winds are essential to obtain synthetic spectra from radiative transfer calculations and to determine the evolutionary path of massive stars. From a theoretical point of view, analytical expressions for the wind parameters and velocity profile would have many advantages over numerical calculations that solve the complex non-linear set of hydrodynamic equations. In a previous work, we obtained an analytical description for the fast wind regime. Now, we propose an approximate expression for the line-force in terms of new parameters and obtain a velocity profile closed-form solution (in terms of the Lambert $W$ function) for the $δ$-slow regime. Using this analytical velocity profile, we were able to obtain the mass-loss rates based on the m-CAK theory. Moreover, we established a relation between this new set of line-force parameters with the known stellar and m-CAK line-force parameters. To this purpose, we calculated a grid of numerical hydrodynamical models and performed a multivariate multiple regression. The numerical and our descriptions lead to good agreement between their values.
Fast (>700 km/s) and slow (~400 km/s) winds stream from the Sun, permeate the heliosphere and influence the near-Earth environment. While the fast wind is known to emanate primarily from polar coronal holes, the source of the slow wind remains unknown. Here we identify possible sites of origin using a slow solar wind source map of the entire Sun, which we construct from specially designed, full- disk observations from the Hinode satellite, and a magnetic field model. Our map provides a full-Sun observation that combines three key ingredients for identifying the sources: velocity, plasma compos…
The slow solar wind exhibits strong variability on timescales from minutes to days, likely related to magnetic reconnection processes in the extended solar corona. Higginson2017b presented a numerical magnetohydrodynamic simulation which showed interchange magnetic reconnection is ubiquitous and most likely responsible for releasing much of the slow solar wind, in particular along topological features known as the Separatrix-Web (S-Web). Here, we continue our analysis, focusing on two specific aspects of structured slow solar wind variability. The first type is present in the slow solar wind f…
We present an examination of the First Ionization Potential (FIP) fractionation scenario invoking the ponderomotive force in the chromosphere, and its implications for the source(s) of slow speed solar winds by using observations from The Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE). Following a recent conjecture that the abundance enhancements of intermediate FIP elements, S, P, and C, in slow solar winds can be explained by the release of plasma fractionated on open fields, though from regions of stronger magnetic field than usually associated with fast solar wind source regions, we identify a period…
Quasi-Periodic Releases of Streamer Blobs and Velocity Variability of the Slow Solar Wind near the Sun
Hot stars emit large amounts of X-rays, which are assumed to originate in the supersonic stellar wind. Part of the emitted X-rays is subsequently absorbed in the wind and influences its ionization state. Because hot star winds are driven radiatively, the modified ionization equilibrium affects the radiative force. We review the recent progress in modelling the influence of X-rays on the radiative equilibrium and on the radiative force. We focus particularly on single stars with X-rays produced in wind shocks and on binaries with massive components, which belong to the most luminous objects in …
Most radiatively-driven massive star winds can be modelled with m-CAK theory resulting in so called fast solution. However, those most rapidly rotating among them, especially when the stellar rotational speed is higher than $\sim 75\%$ of the critical rotational speed, can adopt a different solution called $Ω$-slow solution characterized by a dense and slow wind. Here, in this work we study the transition region of the solutions where the fast solution changes to the $Ω$-slow. Using both time-steady and time-dependent numerical codes, we study this transition region for different equatorial mo…
We investigate the characteristics and the sources of the slow (< 450 km/s) solar wind during the four years (2006-2009) of low solar activity between Solar Cycles 23 and 24. We use a comprehensive set of in-situ observations in the near-Earth solar wind (Wind and ACE) and remove the periods when large-scale interplanetary coronal mass ejections were present. The investigated period features significant variations in the global coronal structure, including the frequent presence of low-latitude active regions in 2006-2007, long-lived low- and mid-latitude coronal holes in 2006 - mid-2008 and mo…
Wind mass transfer in binary systems with AGB donor stars plays a fundamental role in the formation of a variety of objects, including barium stars and CEMP stars. We carry out a comprehensive set of SPH simulations of wind-losing AGB stars in binaries, for a variety of binary mass ratios, orbital separations, initial wind velocities and rotation rates of the donor star. The initial parameters of the simulated systems are chosen to match the expected progenitors of CEMP stars. We find that the strength of interaction between the wind and the stars depends on both the wind-velocity-to-orbital-v…
We present an analysis of wind absorption in the C II $λ1335$ doublet towards 40 classical T Tauri stars with archival far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectra obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope. Absorption features produced by fast or slow winds are commonly detected (36 out of 40 targets) in our sample. The wind velocity of the fast wind decreases with disk inclination, consistent with expectations for a collimated jet. Slow wind absorption is detected mostly in disks with intermediate or high inclination, without a significant dependence of wind velocity on disk inclination. Both the fast and slow…
Because of its distinctive compositional properties and variability, low-speed ($\lesssim 450$ km s$^{-1}$) solar wind is widely believed to originate from coronal streamers, unlike high-speed wind, which comes from coronal holes. An alternative scenario is that the bulk of the slow wind (excluding that in the immediate vicinity of the heliospheric current sheet) originates from rapidly diverging flux tubes rooted inside small coronal holes or just within the boundaries of large holes. This viewpoint is based largely on photospheric field extrapolations, which are subject to considerable uncer…
Context. Radiation-driven mass loss is key to our understanding of massive-star evolution. However, for low-luminosity O-type stars there are big discrepancies between theoretically predicted and empirically derived mass-loss rates (called the weak-wind problem). Aims. We compute radiation-line-driven wind models of a typical weak-wind star to determine its temperature structure and the corresponding impact on ultra-violet (UV) line formation. Methods. We carried out hydrodynamic simulations of the line-deshadowing instability (LDI) for a weak-wind star in the Galaxy. Subsequently, we used thi…
We present results of simulations to assess the feasibility of modeling outflows from massive stars using the Los Alamos 3-D radiation hydrodynamics code Cassio developed for inertial confinement fusion (ICF) applications. We find that a 1-D stellar envelope simulation relaxes into hydrostatic equilibrium using computing resources that would make the simulation tractable in 2-D. We summarize next steps to include more physics fidelity and model the response to a large and abrupt energy deposition at the base of the envelope.
Although the origins of slow solar wind are unclear, there is increasing evidence that at least some of it is released in a steady state on over-expanded coronal hole magnetic field lines. This type of slow wind has similar properties to the fast solar wind, including a high degree of Alfvénicity. In this study a combination of proton, alpha particle, and electron measurements are used to investigate the kinetic properties of a single interval of slow Alfvénic wind at 0.35 AU. It is shown that this slow Alfvénic interval is characterised by high alpha particle abundances, pronounced alpha-prot…
STEREO-Wind Radio Positioning of an Unusually Slow Drifting Event
Plasma outflows from the edges of active regions have been suggested as a possible source of the slow solar wind. Spectroscopic measurements show that these outflows have an enhanced elemental composition, which is a distinct signature of the slow wind. Current spectroscopic observations, however, do not have sufficient spatial resolution to distinguish what structures are being measured or to determine the driver of the outflows. The High-resolution Coronal Imager (Hi-C) flew on a sounding rocket in May, 2018, and observed areas of active region outflow at the highest spatial resolution ever …
A Steady-State Picture of Solar Wind Acceleration and Charge State Composition Derived from a Global Wave-Driven MHD Model
In the colliding-wind region of massive binaries, non-thermal radio emission occurs. This non-thermal radio emission (due to synchrotron radiation) has so far been observed at centimetre wavelengths. At millimetre wavelengths, the stellar winds and the colliding-wind region emit more thermal free-free radiation, and it is expected that any non-thermal contribution will be difficult or impossible to detect. We aim to determine if the material in the colliding-wind region contributes substantially to the observed millimetre fluxes of a colliding-wind binary. We also try to distinguish the synchr…
We investigate the possible role of line-driven winds in the circumstellar envelope in B[e] stars, mainly the role of the $Ω$-slow wind solution, which is characterized by a slower terminal velocity and higher mass-loss rate, in comparison with the standard (m-CAK) wind solution. In this work, we assume two scenarios: 1) a spherically symmetric star and 2) a scenario that considers the oblate shape, considering only the oblate correction factor. For certain values of the line force parameters (according to previous works), we obtain in both scenarios a density contrast $\gtrsim10^{2}$ between …
Recent large-scale spectropolarimetric surveys have established that a small but significant percentage of massive stars host stable, surface dipolar magnetic fields with strengths on the order of kG. These fields channel the dense, radiatively driven stellar wind into circumstellar magnetospheres, whose density and velocity structure can be probed using ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy of wind-sensitive resonance lines. Coupled with appropriate magnetosphere models, UV spectroscopy provides a valuable way to investigate the wind-field interaction, and can yield quantitative estimates of the wind…

Radiation-driven winds of hot luminous stars. XVIII. The reliability of stellar and wind parameter determinations from spectral analysis of selected central stars of planetary nebulae and the possibility of single-star SN Ia progenitors
Motivated by recent theoretical work on tidal disruption events and other peculiar transients, we present moving-mesh radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of radiative luminosity emitted by a central source being reprocessed by a wind-like outflow. We couple the moving-mesh hydrodynamic code JET with our newly-developed radiation module based on mixed-frame grey flux-limited diffusion with implicit timestep update. This allows us to study the self-consistent multi-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamic evolution over more than ten orders of magnitude in both space and time in a single run. We simula…
Fluctuations of solar wind magnetic field and plasma parameters exhibit a typical turbulence power spectrum with a spectral index ranging between $\sim -5/3$ and $\sim -3/2$. In particular, at $1$ AU, the magnetic field spectrum, observed within fast corotating streams, also shows a clear steepening for frequencies higher than the typical proton scales, of the order of $\sim 3\times10^{-1}$ Hz, and a flattening towards $1/f$ at frequencies lower than $\sim 10^{-3}$ Hz. However, the current literature reports observations of the low-frequency break only for fast streams. Slow streams, as observ…
Alfvénic fluctuations are very common features in the solar wind and are found especially within the main portion of fast wind streams while the slow wind usually is less Alfvénic and more variable. In general, fast and slow wind show many differences which span from the large scale structure to small scale phenomena including also a different turbulent behaviour. Recent studies, however, have shown that even slow wind can be sometimes highly Alfvénic with fluctuations as large as those of the fast wind. The present study is devoted to present many facets of this Alfvénic slow solar wind inclu…
A major challenge in solar and heliospheric physics is understanding how highly localized regions, far smaller than 1 degree at the Sun, are the source of solar-wind structures spanning more than 20 degrees near Earth. The Sun's atmosphere is divided into magnetically open regions, coronal holes, where solar-wind plasma streams out freely and fills the solar system, and closed regions, where the plasma is confined to coronal loops. The boundary between these regions extends outward as the heliospheric current sheet (HCS). Measurements of plasma composition imply that the solar wind near the HC…
In contrast with the fast solar wind, that originates in coronal holes, the source of the slow solar wind is still debated. Often intermittent and enriched with low FIP elements -- akin to what is observed in closed coronal loops -- the slow wind could form in bursty events nearby helmet streamers. Slow winds also exhibit density perturbations which have been shown to be periodic and could be associated with flux ropes ejected from the tip of helmet streamers, as shown recently by the WISPR white light imager onboard Parker Solar Probe (PSP). In this work, we propose that the main mechanism co…
Photoionizing radiation and stellar winds from massive stars deposit energy and momentum into the interstellar medium (ISM). They might disperse the local ISM, change its turbulent multi-phase structure, and even regulate star formation. Ionizing radiation dominates the massive stars' energy output, but the relative effect of winds might change with stellar mass and the properties of the ambient ISM. We present simulations of the interaction of stellar winds and ionizing radiation of 12, 23, and 60 M$_{\odot}$ stars within a cold neutral (CNM, $n_{0}$ = 100 cm$^{-3}$), warm neutral (WNM, $n_{0…
Massive protostars attain high luminosities as they are actively accreting and the radiation pressure exerted on the gas in the star's atmosphere may launch isotropic high-velocity winds. These winds will collide with the surrounding gas producing shock-heated ($T\sim 10^7$ K) tenuous gas that adiabatically expands and pushes on the dense gas that may otherwise be accreted. We present a suite of 3D radiation-magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the collapse of massive prestellar cores and include radiative feedback from the stellar and dust-reprocessed radiation fields, collimated outflows, and,…
Estimation of the energy cascade rate in the inertial range of solar wind turbulence has been done so far mostly within the incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) theory. Here, we go beyond that approximation to include plasma compressibility using a reduced form of a recently derived exact law for compressible, isothermal MHD turbulence. Using in-situ data from the THEMIS/ARTEMIS spacecraft in the fast and slow solar wind, we investigate in detail the role of the compressible fluctuations in modifying the energy cascade rate with respect to the prediction of the incompressible MHD model. I…
Binaries hosting a massive star and a non-accreting pulsar are powerful non-thermal emitters due to the interaction of the pulsar and the stellar wind. The winds of massive stars are thought to be inhomogeneous, which could have an impact on the non-thermal emission. We study numerically the impact of the presence of inhomogeneities or clumps in the stellar wind on the high-energy non-thermal radiation of high-mass binaries hosting a non-accreting pulsar. We compute the trajectories and physical properties of the streamlines in the shocked pulsar wind without clumps, with a small clump, and wi…
The slow solar wind belt in the quiet corona, observed with the Metis coronagraph on board Solar Orbiter on May 15, 2020, during the activity minimum of the cycle 24, in a field of view extending from 3.8 $R_\odot$ to 7.0 $R_\odot$, is formed by a slow and dense wind stream running along the coronal current sheet, accelerating in the radial direction and reaching at 6.8 $R_\odot$ a speed within 150 km s$^{-1}$ and 190 km s$^{-1}$, depending on the assumptions on the velocity distribution of the neutral hydrogen atoms in the coronal plasma. The slow stream is separated by thin regions of high v…
Observations in the solar wind suggest that the compressive component of inertial-range solar-wind turbulence is dominated by slow modes. The low collisionality of the solar wind allows for non-thermal features to survive, which suggests the requirement of a kinetic plasma description. The least-damped kinetic slow mode is associated with the ion-acoustic (IA) wave and a non-propagating (NP) mode. We derive analytical expressions for the IA-wave dispersion relation in an anisotropic plasma in the framework of gyrokinetics and then compare them to fully-kinetic numerical calculations, results f…
