As is well known, constant mean curvature (CMC) spacelike hypersurfaces play an important role in solving the Einstein equations, both in solving the contraints and the evolution equations. In this paper we review the CMC existence result obtained by the authors in [10] and consider some new existence results motivated by a conjecture of Dilts and Holst [8]. We also address some issues concerning the conformal structure of cosmological spacetimes.
In this paper, we review results on the existence (and nonexistence) of constant mean curvature spacelike hypersurfaces in the cosmological setting, and discuss the connection to the spacetime splittng problem. It is a pleasure to dedicate this paper to Robert Bartnik, who has made fundamental contributions to this area.
Chruściel, Isenberg, and Pollack constructed a class of vacuum cosmological spacetimes that do not admit Cauchy surfaces with constant mean curvature. We prove that, for sufficiently large values of the gluing parameter, these examples are both future and past null geodesically incomplete. The authors are honored to dedicate this paper to Robert Bartnik on the occasion of his 60th birthday.
In this note we present a result establishing the existence of a compact CMC Cauchy surface from a curvature condition related to the strong energy condition.
Many results in mathematical relativity, including results for both the initial data problem and for the evolution problem, rely on the existence of a constant mean curvature (CMC) Cauchy surface in the underlying spacetime. However, it is known that some spacetimes have no CMC Cauchy surfaces (slices). This is an obstacle for many results and constructions with these types of spacetimes, and is particularly worrisome since it is not known whether spacetimes that do have CMC slices are in any sense generic. In this expository paper, we will discuss the known results about the existence (and no…
In this paper, we consider very rough solutions to Cauchy problem for the Einstein vacuum equations in CMC spacial harmonic gauge, and obtain the local well-posedness result in $H^s, s>2$. The novelty of our approach lies in that, without resorting to the standard paradifferential regularization over the rough, Einstein metric $\bg$, we manage to implement the commuting vector field approach to prove Strichartz estimate for geometric wave equation $\Box_\bg ϕ=0$ directly.
We consider spacetimes with compact Cauchy hypersurfaces and with Ricci tensor bounded from below on the set of timelike unit vectors, and prove that the results known for spacetimes satisfying the timelike convergence condition, namely, foliation by CMC hypersurfaces, are also valid in the present situation, if corresponding further assumptions are satisfied. In addition we show that the volume of any sequence of spacelike hypersurfaces, which run into the future singularity, decays to zero provided there exists a time function covering a future end, such that the level hypersurfaces have non…
In a recent paper Królak and Beem have shown differentiability of Cauchy horizons at all points of multiplicity one. In this note we give a simpler proof of this result.

A short review on spherically symmetric static regular black holes and spherically symmetric non singular cosmological space-time is presented. Several models of regular black holes, including new ones, are considered. First, a large class of regular black holes having an inner de Sitter core with the related issue of Cauchy horizon is investigated. Then, black bounce space-times, where the Cauchy horizon and therefore the related instabilities are absent, are discussed as valid alternatives of regular black holes with inner de Sitter core. Friedman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker space-times admitt…
The existence, established over the past number of years and supporting earlier work of Ori [14], of physically relevant black hole spacetimes that admit $C^0$ metric extensions beyond the future Cauchy horizon, while being $C^2$-inextendible, has focused attention on fundamental issues concerning the strong cosmic censorship conjecture. These issues were recently discussed in the work of Jan Sbierski [17], in which he established the (nonobvious) fact that the Schwarschild solution in global Kruskal-Szekeres coordinates is $C^0$-inextendible. In this paper we review aspects of Sbierski's meth…
We prove short-time existence for the Einstein-Euler-Entropy system for non-isentropic fluids with data in uniformly local Sobolev spaces. The cases of compact as well as non-compact Cauchy surfaces are covered. The method employed uses a Lagrangian description of the fluid flow which is based on techniques developed by Friedrich, hence providing a completely different proof of earlier results of Choquet-Bruhat and Lichnerowicz. This new proof is specially suited for applications to self-gravitating fluid bodies.
In this conference published in 1997 some problems on the geodesics of a Lorentzian manifold concerning causality and infinite-dimensional variational methods, are pointed out. Even though a big progress on many of these questions have been carried out since then, some computations in this paper may be useful and have not been published elsewhere. Among them, for example, the following one (Section 3). Consider a spacetime which can be written globally as a product $R x M$, such that the natural vector field associated to the coordinate $t$ in $R$ is timelike. When is this spacetime globally h…
We prove nonlinear Lyapunov stability of a family of `$n+1$'-dimensional cosmological models of general relativity locally isometric to the Friedman Lemaître Robertson Walker (FLRW) spacetimes including a positive cosmological constant. In particular, we show that the perturbed solutions to the Einstein-Euler field equations around a class of spatially compact FLRW metrics (for which the spatial slices are compact negative Einstein spaces in general and hyperbolic for the physically relevant $n=3$ case) arising from regular Cauchy data remain uniformly bounded and decay to a family of metrics …
We study the Cauchy problem for the wave equation on extreme Kerr backgrounds under axisymmetry. Specifically, we consider regular axisymmetric initial data prescribed on a Cauchy hypersurface S which connects the future event horizon with spacelike or null infinity, and we solve the linear wave equation on the domain of dependence of S. We show that the spacetime integral of an energy-type density is bounded by the initial conserved flux corresponding to the stationary Killing field T, and we derive boundedness of the non-degenerate energy flux corresponding to a globally timelike vector fiel…
