We generalize the Hasse invariant of local class field theory to the tame Brauer group of a higher dimensional local field, and use it to study the arithmetic of central simple algebras over such fields, which are given {\it a priori} as tensor products of standard cyclic algebras.
We also compute the tame Brauer dimension (or {\it period-index bound}) and the cyclic length of a general henselian-valued field of finite rank and finite residue field.
We construct families of log K3 surfaces and study the arithmetic of their members. We use this to produce explicit surfaces with an order 5 Brauer-Manin obstruction to the integral Hasse principle.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety with a fibration into varieties that either satisfy a condition on representability of zero-cycles or that are torsors under an abelian variety. We study the classes in the Brauer group that never obstruct the Hasse principle for $X$. We prove that if the generic fiber has a zero-cycle of degree $d$ over the generic point, then the Brauer classes whose orders are prime to $d$ do not play a role in the Brauer--Manin obstruction. As a result we show that the odd torsion Brauer classes never obstruct the Hasse principle for del Pezzo surfaces of degree 2, ce…
Let $F$ be the function field of a smooth curve over the $p$-adic number field $\Q_p$. We show that for each prime-to-$p$ number $n$ the $n$-torsion subgroup $\H^2(F,μ_n)={}_n\Br(F)$ is generated by $\Z/n$-cyclic classes; in fact the $\Z/n$-length is equal to two. It follows that the Brauer dimension of $F$ is two (first proved in \cite{Sa97}), and any $F$-division algebra of period $n$ and index $n^2$ is decomposable.
Embeddings of maximal tori into classical groups over global fields of characteristic not 2 are the subject matter of several recent papers, with special attention to the Hasse principle. The present paper gives necessary and sufficient conditions for this embedding problem, and in particular for the Hasse principle to hold. Using work of Borovoi, this is interpreted as a Brauer-Manin type obstruction.
Let $k$ be a finite field, a $p$-adic field or a number field. Let $K$ be a finite extension of the Laurent series field in $m$ variables $k((x_1,...,x_m))$ or, more generally, a finite extension of the field of rational functions $k((x_1,...,x_m))(y_1,...,y_n)$. When $r$ is an integer, we consider the Galois module $\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}(r)$ over $K$ and we prove several vanishing theorems for its cohomology. In the particular case when $K$ is a finite extension of the Laurent series field in two variables $k((x_1,x_2))$, we also prove exact sequences that play the role of the Brauer-Hasse-No…
It is known that the Brauer--Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle is vacuous for smooth Fano hypersurfaces of dimension at least $3$ over any number field. Moreover, for such varieties it follows from a general conjecture of Colliot-Thélène that the Brauer--Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle should be the only one, so that the Hasse principle is expected to hold. Working over the field of rational numbers and ordering Fano hypersurfaces of fixed degree and dimension by height, we prove that almost every such hypersurface satisfies the Hasse principle provided that the dimension is at…
Let X be a homogeneous space of a quasi-trivial k-group G, with geometric stabilizer H, over a number field k. We prove that under certain conditions on the character group of H, certain algebraic Brauer-Manin obstructions to the Hasse principle and weak approximation vanish, because the abelian groups where they take values vanish. When H is connected or abelian, these algebraic Brauer-Manin obstructions to the Hasse principle and weak approximation are the only ones, so we prove the Hasse principle and weak approximation for X under certain conditions. As an application, we obtain new suffic…
We construct an Enriques surface X over Q with empty étale-Brauer set (and hence no rational points) for which there is no algebraic Brauer-Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle. In addition, if there is a transcendental obstruction on X, then we obtain a K3 surface that has a transcendental obstruction to the Hasse principle.
In this paper, we study the properties of weak approximation with Brauer-Manin obstruction and the Hasse principle with Brauer-Manin obstruction for surfaces with respect to field extensions of number fields. We assume a conjecture of M. Stoll. For any nontrivial extension of number fields $L/K,$ we construct two kinds of smooth, projective, and geometrically connected surfaces defined over $K.$ For the surface of the first kind, it has a $K$-rational point, and satisfies weak approximation with Brauer-Manin obstruction off $\infty_K,$ while its base change by $L$ does not so off $\infty_L.$ F…
Given any global field k of characteristic 2, we construct a Chatelet surface over k which fails to satisfy the Hasse principle. This failure is due to a Brauer-Manin obstruction. This construction extends a result of Poonen to characteristic 2, thereby showing that the etale-Brauer obstruction is insufficient to explain all failures of the Hasse principle over a global field of any characteristic.
We show that transcendental elements of the Brauer group of an algebraic surface can obstruct the Hasse principle. We construct a general K3 surface X of degree 2 over Q, together with a two-torsion Brauer class A that is unramified at every finite prime, but ramifies at real points of X. Motivated by Hodge theory, the pair (X,A) is constructed from a double cover of P^2 x P^2 ramified over a hypersurface of bi-degree (2,2).
Given systems of two (inhomogeneous) quadratic equations in four variables, it is known that the Hasse principle for integral points may fail. Sometimes this failure can be explained by some integral Brauer-Manin obstruction. We study the existence of a non-trivial algebraic part of the Brauer group for a family of such systems and show that the failure of the integral Hasse principle due to an algebraic Brauer-Manin obstruction is rare, as for a generic choice of a system the algebraic part of the Brauer-group is trivial. We use resolvent constructions to give quantitative upper bounds on the…
We prove the existence of noncrossed product and indecomposable division algebras over the function field of a smooth p-adic curve, especially when the curve does not admit a smooth model over Z_p. Thus we generalize arXiv 0907.0670. To make our constructions, we investigate the lifting of cohomology classes from the total fraction ring of the closed fiber to the function field of the curve, over an arbitrary discrete valuation ring of mixed characteristic.
We determine the odd order torsion subgroup of the Brauer group of diagonal quartic surfaces over the field of rational numbers. We show that a non-constant Brauer element of odd order always obstructs weak approximation but never the Hasse principle.
We show that odd order transcendental elements of the Brauer group of a K3 surface can obstruct the Hasse principle. We exhibit a general K3 surface $Y$ of degree 2 over $\mathbb{Q}$ together with a three torsion Brauer class $α$ that is unramified at all primes except for 3, but ramifies at all 3-adic points of $Y$. Motivated by Hodge theory, the pair $(Y, α)$ is constructed from a cubic fourfold $X$ of discriminant 18 birational to a fibration into sextic del Pezzo surfaces over the projective plane. Notably, our construction does not rely on the presence of a central simple algebra represen…
We use an explicit description of the Brauer-Manin obstruction, recently obtained by Colliot-Thélène, to study the density of varieties in a certain family which do not satisfy the Hasse principle.
We study arithmetic properties of del Pezzo surfaces of degree 4 for which the Brauer group has the largest possible order using different fibrations into curves. We show that if such a surface admits a conic fibration, then it always has a rational point. We also answer a question of Várilly-Alvarado and Viray by showing that the Brauer groups these surfaces cannot be vertical with respect to any projection away from a plane. We conclude that the available techniques for proving existence of rational points or even Zariski density do not directly apply if there is no Brauer-Manin obstruction …
Let $k$ be a number field. We construct homogeneous spaces of $SL_{n,k}$ with finite nilpotent non-abelian stabilizers for which the Brauer-Manin obstruction does not explain the failure of strong approximation (resp. the failure of the integral Hasse principle).
It is well-known that the Hasse principle holds for quadric hypersurfaces. The Hasse principle fails for integral points on smooth quadric hypersurfaces of dimension 2 but the failure can be completely explained by the Brauer-Manin obstruction. We investigate how often the family of quadric hypersurfaces $ax^2 + by^2 +cz^2 = n$ has a Brauer-Manin obstruction. We improve previous bounds of Mitankin.
We show that if over some number field there exists a certain diagonal plane cubic curve that is locally solvable everywhere, but that does not have points over any cubic galois extension of the number field, then the algebraic part of the Brauer-Manin obstruction is not the only obstruction to the Hasse principle for K3 surfaces.
In this paper, we construct three kinds of Châtelet surfaces, which have some given arithmetic properties with respect to field extensions of number fields. We then use these constructions to study the properties of weak approximation with Brauer-Manin obstruction and the Hasse principle with Brauer-Manin obstruction for $3$-folds, which are pencils of Châtelet surfaces parameterized by a curve, with respect to field extensions of number fields. We give general constructions (conditional on a conjecture of M. Stoll) to negatively answer some questions, and illustrate these constructions and so…
We pr…
We study Kummer varieties attached to 2-coverings of abelian varieties of arbitrary dimension. Over a number field we show that the subgroup of odd order elements of the Brauer group does not obstruct the Hasse principle. Sufficient conditions for the triviality of the Brauer group are given, which allow us to give an example of a Kummer K3 surface of geometric Picard rank 17 over the rationals with trivial Brauer group. We establish the non-emptyness of the Brauer--Manin set of everywhere locally soluble Kummer varieties attached to 2-coverings of products of hyperelliptic Jacobians with larg…
Let F be a field of transcendence degree one over a p-adic field, and let l be a prime not equal to p. Results of Merkurjev and Saltman show that H^2(F,μ_l) is generated by Z/l-cyclic classes. We prove the "Z/l-length" in H^2(F,μ_l) equals the l-Brauer dimension, which Saltman showed to be two. It follows that all F-division algebras of period l are crossed products, either cyclic (by Saltman's cyclicity result) or tensor products of two cyclic division algebras. Our result was originally proved by Suresh assuming F contains μ_l.
Let $k$ be a global field and let $L_0$,...,$L_m$ be finite separable field extensions of $k$. In this paper, we are interested in the Hasse principle for the multinorm equation $\underset{i=0}{\overset{m}{\prod}}N_{L_i/k}(t_i)=c$. Under the assumption that $L_0$ is a cyclic extension, we give an explicit description of the Brauer-Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle. We also give a complete criterion for the Hasse principle for multinorm equations to hold when $L_0$ is a meta-cyclic extension.
We give formulas for calculating the unramified Brauer group of a homogeneous space $X$ of a semisimple simply connected group $G$ with finite geometric stabilizer $\bar F$ over a wide family of fields of characteristic 0. When $k$ is a number field, we use these formulas in order to study the Brauer-Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle and weak approximation. We prove in particular that the Brauer-Manin pairing is constant on $X(k_v)$ for every $v$ outside from an explicit finite set of non archimedean places of $k$.
For a smooth proper variety over a $p$-adic field, the Brauer group and abelian fundamental group are related to the higher Chow groups by the Brauer-Manin pairing and the class field theory. We generalize this relation to smooth (possibly non-proper) varieties, using the motivic homology and the tame version of Wiesend's ideal class group. Several examples are discussed.

In this paper we introduce two new ways to split ramification of Brauer classes on surfaces using stacks. Each splitting method gives rise to a new moduli space of twisted stacky vector bundles. By studying the structure of these spaces we prove new results on the standard period-index conjecture. The first yields new bounds on the period-index relation for classes on curves over higher local fields, while the second can be used to relate the Hasse principle for forms of moduli spaces of stable vector bundles on pointed curves over global fields to the period-index problem for Brauer groups of…
We study the integral Hasse principle for affine varieties of the form ax^2+y^2+z^2-xyz=m ,using Brauer-Manin obstruction, and we produce examples whose Brauer groups include 4-torsion elements .We will construct their explicit representatives and compute local invariants in special places.
Ghosh and Sarnak have studied integral points on surfaces defined by an equation x^2+y^2+z^2-xyz= m over the integers. For these affine surfaces, we systematically study the Brauer group and the Brauer-Manin obstruction to the integral Hasse principle. We prove that strong approximation for integral points on any such surface, away from any finite set of places, fails, and that, for m\neq 0, 4, the Brauer group does not control strong approximation.
Let $\mathbb{F}$ be a finite field and $C,D$ smooth, geometrically irreducible proper curves over $\mathbb{F}$ and set $K = \mathbb{F}(D)$. We consider Brauer-Manin and abelian descent obstructions to the existence of rational points and to weak approximation for the curve $C \otimes_\mathbb{F} K$. In particular, we show that Brauer-Manin is the only obstruction to weak approximation and the Hasse principle in the case that the genus of $D$ is less than that of $C$. We also show that we can identify the points corresponding to non-constant maps $D \to C$ using Frobenius descents.
We analyze the Brauer-Manin obstruction to rational points on the K3 surfaces over $\mathbb{Q}$ given by double covers of $\mathbb{P}^2$ ramified over a diagonal sextic. After finding an explicit set of generators for the geometric Picard group of such a surface, we find two types of infinite families of counterexamples to the Hasse principle explained by the algebraic Brauer-Manin obstruction. The first type of obstruction comes from a quaternion algebra, and the second type comes from a 3-torsion element of the Brauer group, which gives an affirmative answer to a question asked by Ieronymou …
We discuss the geometry and arithmetic of higher-dimensional analogues of Châtelet surfaces; namely, we describe the structure of their Brauer and Picard groups and show that they can violate the Hasse principle. In addition, we use these varieties to give straightforward generalizations of two recent results of Poonen. Specifically, we prove that, assuming Schinzel's hypothesis, the non-m^{th} powers of a number field are diophantine. Also, given a global field k such that Char(k) = p or k contains the p^{th} roots of unity, we construct a (p+1)-fold that has no k-points and no étale-Brauer o…
Let X be a smooth variety over a number field k embedded as a degree d subvariety of $\mathbb{P}^n$ and suppose that X is a counterexample to the Hasse principle explained by the Brauer-Manin obstruction. We consider the question of whether the obstruction is given by the d-primary subgroup of the Brauer group, which would have both theoretic and algorithmic implications. We prove that this question has a positive answer in the case of torsors under abelian varieties, Kummer surfaces and (conditional on finiteness of Tate-Shafarevich groups) bielliptic surfaces. For Kummer varieties we show th…
In this paper we use the theory of $ε$-constants associated to tame finite group actions on arithmetic surfaces to define a Brauer group invariant $μ(\X,G,V)$ associated to certain symplectic motives of weight one. We then discuss the relationship between this invariant and $w_2(π)$, the Galois theoretic invariant associated to tame covers of surfaces.
We conjecture that if C is a curve of genus >1 over a number field k such that C(k) is empty, then a method of Scharaschkin (equivalent to the Brauer-Manin obstruction in the context of curves) supplies a proof that C(k) is empty. As evidence, we prove a corresponding statement in which C(F_v) is replaced by a random subset of the same size in J(F_v) for each residue field F_v at a place v of good reduction for C, and the orders of Jacobians over finite fields are assumed to be smooth (in the sense of having only small prime divisors) as often as random integers of the same size. If our conjec…
Almost one decade ago, Poonen constructed the first examples of algebraic varieties over global fields for which Skorobogatov's etale Brauer-Manin obstruction does not explain the failure of the Hasse principle. By now, several constructions are known, but they all share common geometric features such as large fundamental groups. In this paper, we construct simply connected fourfolds over global fields of positive characteristic for which the Brauer-Manin machinery fails. Contrary to earlier work in this direction, our construction does not rely on major conjectures. Instead, we establish a ne…
We consider the Brauer-Manin obstruction to the existence of integral points on affine surfaces defined by $x^2 - ay^2 = P(t)$ over a number field. We enumerate the possibilities for the Brauer groups of certain families of such surfaces, and show that in contrast to their smooth compactifications, the Brauer groups of these affine varieties need not be generated by cyclic (e.g. quaternion) algebras. Concrete examples are given of such surfaces over $\mathbb{Q}$ which have solutions in $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ for all $p$ and solutions in $\mathbb{Q}$, but for which the failure of the integral Hasse p…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over a number field, fibered over a curve, with geometrically integral fibers. We prove that, supposing the finiteness of $\sha(Jac(C))$, if the fibers over a generalised Hilbertian subset satisfy the Hasse principle (resp. weak approximation), then the Brauer-Manin obstruction coming from the base curve is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle (resp. to weak approximation) for zero-cycles of degree 1 on $X$.
Let $K$ be a global field of positive characteristic. We prove that the Brauer-Manin obstructions to the Hasse principle, to weak approximation and to strong approximation are the only ones for homogeneous spaces of reductive groups with reductive stabilizers. The methods involve abelianization techniques and arithmetic duality theorems for complexes of tori over K.
We study the local-global principle for zero-cycles of degree 1 on certain varieties fibered over the projective space. Among other applications, we prove that the Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle and weak approximation for zero-cycles of degree 1 on Severi-Brauer-variety bundles or Châtelet-surface bundles over the projective space.
