Transparent Conductive Oxides (TCOs) are a class of materials that combine high optical transparency with high electrical conductivity. This property makes them uniquely appealing as transparent-conductive electrodes in solar cells and interesting for optoelectronics and infrared-plasmonics applications. One of the new challenges that researchers and engineers are facing is merging optical and electrical control in a single device for developing next-generation photovoltaic, opto-electronic devices and energyefficient solid-state lighting. In this work, we investigated the possible variations in the dielectric properties of aluminum-doped ZnO (AZO) upon gating, by means of Spectroscopic Ellipsometry (SE). We investigated the electrical-bias-dependent optical response of thin AZO films fabricated by magnetron sputtering, within a parallel-plane capacitor configuration. We address the possibility to control their optical and electric performances by applying bias, monitoring the effect of charge injection/depletion in the AZO layer by means of in-operando SE vs applied gate voltage.
Understanding the interaction between plasmonic nanoparticles and transparent conductive oxides is instrumental to the development of next-generation photovoltaic, opto-electronic and energy-efficient solid-state lighting devices. We investigated the optical response of hybrid media composed of gold nanoparticles deposited on aluminum-doped zinc oxide thin films with varying doping concentration by spectroscopic ellipsometry. The dielectric functions of bare AZO were addressed first, revealing doping-induced effects such as the band-gap shift and the appearance of free carriers. In the hybrid …
Thin film solar cells have been attractive for decades in advanced green technology platforms due to its possibilities to be integrated with buildings and on-chip applications. However, the bottleneck issues involved to consider the current solar cells as a major electricity source includes the lower efficiencies and cost-effectiveness. We numerically demonstrate the concept of the absorption enhancement in thin-film amorphous silicon solar cells using the laser beam-induced graphene material based on the insensitive polarization space-filling fractal design as transparent conductive electrode…
In spectroscopic ellipsometry, the optical properties of materials are obtained indirectly by generally assuming dielectric function and optical models. This ellipsometry analysis, which typically requires numerous model parameters, has essentially been performed by a try-and-error approach, making this method as a rather time-consuming characterization technique. Here, we propose a fully automated spectroscopic ellipsometry analysis method, which can be applied to obtain dielectric functions of light absorbing materials in a full measured energy range without any prior knowledge of model para…
Magnetoplasmonics is highly promising to devise active optical elements: modulating the plasmon resonance condition with magnetic field can boost the performance of refractometric sensors and nanophotonic optical devices. Nevertheless, real life applications are hampered by the magnetoplasmonic trilemma: 1) a good plasmonic metal has sharp optical resonances but low magneto-optical response; 2) a magnetic metal has strong magneto-optical response but a very broad plasmonic resonance; 3) mixing the two components degrades the quality of both features. To overcome the trilemma, we use a differen…
Infrared spectroscopic ellipsometry is applied to investigate the free-charge carrier properties of Mg-doped InN films. Two representative sets of In-polar InN grown by molecular beam epitaxy with Mg concentrations ranging from $1.2\times10^{17}$ cm$^{-3}$ to $8\times10^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$ are compared. P-type conductivity is indicated for the Mg concentration range of $1\times10^{18}$ cm$^{-3}$ to $9\times10^{19}$ cm$^{-3}$ from a systematic investigation of the longitudinal optical phonon plasmon broadening and the mobility parameter in dependence of the Mg concentration. A parameterized model t…
Grooves were etched in a conductive layer of a conductive, transparent glass, and a nanoporous TiO2 film was deposited on both the conductive and nonconductive area. The width of the grooves was 100 $μ$m and 150 $μ$m. A transparent TiO2 film was dye-sensitized, covered with an electrolyte, and sandwiched with a cover glass. The conductivity of the dye-sensitized TiO2 film permeated with electrolyte was studied in the dark and under illumination, and was observed to be dependent on light intensity, wavelength and applied voltage. This study shows that dye-sensitized nanoporous films can be used…
This work addresses the integration of reflectarray antennas (RA) on thin film Solar Cell (SC) panels, as a mean to save real estate, weight, or cost in platforms such as satellites or transportable autonomous antenna systems. Our goal is to design a good RA unit cell in terms of phase response and bandwidth, while simultaneously achieving high optical transparency and low microwave loss, to preserve good SC and RA energy efficiencies, respectively. Since there is a trade-off between the optical transparency and microwave surface conductivity of a conductor, here both standard copper and trans…
Nanophotonics and metamaterials have revolutionised the way we think about optical space (epsilon, mu), enabling us to engineer the refractive index almost at will, to confine light to the smallest of the volumes, and to manipulate optical signals with extremely small footprints and energy requirements. Significant efforts are now devoted to finding suitable materials and strategies for the dynamic control of the optical properties. Transparent conductive oxides exhibit large ultrafast nonlinearities under both interband and intraband excitations. Here, we show that combining these two effects…
By combining the large Purcell effect of photonic crystal nanocavity and the strong plasma dispersion effect of the transparent conductive oxides, ultra-compact silicon modulators with heterogeneously integrated indium-tin-oxide (ITO) can potentially achieve unprecedented energy efficiency to atto-joule per bit. In this article, we report the first high-speed silicon nanocavity modulator driven by an ITO gate, achieving 2.2 GHz bandwidth. On-off-key modulation is measured up to 5 Gb/s with only 2 V voltage swing and 18.3 fJ/bit energy efficiency. In addition, we perform in-depth analysis of th…
The outstanding electrical and optical properties of graphene make it an excellent alternative as a transparent electrode. Here we demonstrate the application of graphene as collector material in internal photoemission (IPE) spectroscopy; enabling the direct observation of both electron and hole injections at a Si/Al2O3 interface and successfully overcoming the long-standing difficulty of detecting holes injected from a semiconductor emitter in IPE measurements. The observed electron and hole barrier heights are 3.5 eV and 4.1 eV, respectively. Thus the bandgap of Al2O3 can be further deduced …

Hypothetical metals having optical absorption losses as low as those of the transparent insulators, if found, could revolutionize optoelectronics. We perform the first high-throughput search for lossless metals among all known inorganic materials in the databases of over 100,000 entries. The 381 candidates are identified -- having well-isolated partially-filled bands -- and are analyzed by defining the figures of merit and classifying their real-space conductive connectivity. The existing experimental evidence of most candidates being insulating, instead of conducting, is due to the limitation…
Transparent conductive oxides such as indium tin oxide (ITO) bear the potential to deliver efficient all-optical functionality due to their record-breaking optical nonlinearity at epsilon near zero (ENZ) wavelengths. All-optical applications generally involve more than one beam, but the coherent interaction between beams has not previously been discussed in materials with a hot electron nonlinearity. Here we study the optical nonlinearity at ENZ in ITO and show that spatial and temporal interference has important consequences in a two beam geometry. Our pump-probe results reveal a polarization…
