We present a method for improving the quality of synthetic room impulse responses for far-field speech recognition. We bridge the gap between the fidelity of synthetic room impulse responses (RIRs) and the real room impulse responses using our novel, TS-RIRGAN architecture. Given a synthetic RIR in the form of raw audio, we use TS-RIRGAN to translate it into a real RIR. We also perform real-world sub-band room equalization on the translated synthetic RIR. Our overall approach improves the quality of synthetic RIRs by compensating low-frequency wave effects, similar to those in real RIRs. We evaluate the performance of improved synthetic RIRs on a far-field speech dataset augmented by convolving the LibriSpeech clean speech dataset [1] with RIRs and adding background noise. We show that far-field speech augmented using our improved synthetic RIRs reduces the word error rate by up to 19.9% in Kaldi far-field automatic speech recognition benchmark [2].
We present a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) based room impulse response generator (IR-GAN) for generating realistic synthetic room impulse responses (RIRs). IR-GAN extracts acoustic parameters from captured real-world RIRs and uses these parameters to generate new synthetic RIRs. We use these generated synthetic RIRs to improve far-field automatic speech recognition in new environments that are different from the ones used in training datasets. In particular, we augment the far-field speech training set by convolving our synthesized RIRs with a clean LibriSpeech dataset. We evaluate the …

We present a neural-network-based fast diffuse room impulse response generator (FAST-RIR) for generating room impulse responses (RIRs) for a given acoustic environment. Our FAST-RIR takes rectangular room dimensions, listener and speaker positions, and reverberation time as inputs and generates specular and diffuse reflections for a given acoustic environment. Our FAST-RIR is capable of generating RIRs for a given input reverberation time with an average error of 0.02s. We evaluate our generated RIRs in automatic speech recognition (ASR) applications using Google Speech API, Microsoft Speech A…

We propose a novel approach for blind room impulse response (RIR) estimation systems in the context of a downstream application scenario, far-field automatic speech recognition (ASR). We first draw the connection between improved RIR estimation and improved ASR performance, as a means of evaluating neural RIR estimators. We then propose a generative adversarial network (GAN) based architecture that encodes RIR features from reverberant speech and constructs an RIR from the encoded features, and uses a novel energy decay relief loss to optimize for capturing energy-based properties of the input…

State-of-the-art deep-learning-based voice activity detectors (VADs) are often trained with anechoic data. However, real acoustic environments are generally reverberant, which causes the performance to significantly deteriorate. To mitigate this mismatch between training data and real data, we simulate an augmented training set that contains nearly five million utterances. This extension comprises of anechoic utterances and their reverberant modifications, generated by convolutions of the anechoic utterances with a variety of room impulse responses (RIRs). We consider five different models to …

We investigate the impact of more realistic room simulation for training far-field keyword spotting systems without fine-tuning on in-domain data. To this end, we study the impact of incorporating the following factors in the room impulse response (RIR) generation: air absorption, surface- and frequency-dependent coefficients of real materials, and stochastic ray tracing. Through an ablation study, a wake word task is used to measure the impact of these factors in comparison with a ground-truth set of measured RIRs. On a hold-out set of re-recordings under clean and noisy far-field conditions,…
This paper introduces BIRD, the Big Impulse Response Dataset. This open dataset consists of 100,000 multichannel room impulse responses (RIRs) generated from simulations using the Image Method, making it the largest multichannel open dataset currently available. These RIRs can be used toperform efficient online data augmentation for scenarios that involve two microphones and multiple sound sources. The paper also introduces use cases to illustrate how BIRD can perform data augmentation with existing speech corpora.
Deep learning approaches have emerged that aim to transform an audio signal so that it sounds as if it was recorded in the same room as a reference recording, with applications both in audio post-production and augmented reality. In this work, we propose FiNS, a Filtered Noise Shaping network that directly estimates the time domain room impulse response (RIR) from reverberant speech. Our domain-inspired architecture features a time domain encoder and a filtered noise shaping decoder that models the RIR as a summation of decaying filtered noise signals, along with direct sound and early reflect…
In this paper, we describe how to efficiently implement an acoustic room simulator to generate large-scale simulated data for training deep neural networks. Even though Google Room Simulator in [1] was shown to be quite effective in reducing the Word Error Rates (WERs) for far-field applications by generating simulated far-field training sets, it requires a very large number of Fast Fourier Transforms (FFTs) of large size. Room Simulator in [1] used approximately 80 percent of Central Processing Unit (CPU) usage in our CPU + Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) training architecture [2]. In this wor…
The Image Source Method (ISM) is one of the most employed techniques to calculate acoustic Room Impulse Responses (RIRs), however, its computational complexity grows fast with the reverberation time of the room and its computation time can be prohibitive for some applications where a huge number of RIRs are needed. In this paper, we present a new implementation that dramatically improves the computation speed of the ISM by using Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) to parallelize both the simulation of multiple RIRs and the computation of the images inside each RIR. Additional speedups were achieve…

Recording and annotating real sound events for a sound event localization and detection (SELD) task is time consuming, and data augmentation techniques are often favored when the amount of data is limited. However, how to augment the spatial information in a dataset, including unlabeled directional interference events, remains an open research question. Furthermore, directional interference events make it difficult to accurately extract spatial characteristics from target sound events. To address this problem, we propose an impulse response simulation framework (IRS) that augments spatial char…

This paper presents dEchorate: a new database of measured multichannel Room Impulse Responses (RIRs) including annotations of early echo timings and 3D positions of microphones, real sources and image sources under different wall configurations in a cuboid room. These data provide a tool for benchmarking recent methods in echo-aware speech enhancement, room geometry estimation, RIR estimation, acoustic echo retrieval, microphone calibration, echo labeling and reflectors estimation. The database is accompanied with software utilities to easily access, manipulate and visualize the data as well a…
It was shown in our earlier work that the measurement error in the microphone position affected the room impulse response (RIR) which in turn affected the single-channel close microphone and multi-channel distant microphone speech recognition. In this paper, as an extension, we systematically study to identify the optimal location of the microphone, given an approximate and hence erroneous location of the microphone in 3D space. The primary idea is to use Monte-Carlo technique to generate a large number of random microphone positions around the erroneous microphone position and select the micr…
Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems suffer considerably when source speech is corrupted with noise or room impulse responses (RIR). Typically, speech enhancement is applied in both mismatched and matched scenario training and testing. In matched setting, acoustic model (AM) is trained on dereverberated far-field features while in mismatched setting, AM is fixed. In recent past, mapping speech features from far-field to close-talk using denoising autoencoder (DA) has been explored. In this paper, we focus on matched scenario training and show that the proposed joint VAE based mapping ach…
The training of modern speech processing systems often requires a large amount of simulated room impulse response (RIR) data in order to allow the systems to generalize well in real-world, reverberant environments. However, simulating realistic RIR data typically requires accurate physical modeling, and the acceleration of such simulation process typically requires certain computational platforms such as a graphics processing unit (GPU). In this paper, we propose FRA-RIR, a fast random approximation method of the widely-used image-source method (ISM), to efficiently generate realistic RIR data…

We introduce a database of multi-channel recordings performed in an acoustic lab with adjustable reverberation time. The recordings provide information about room impulse responses (RIR) for various positions of a loudspeaker. In particular, the main positions correspond to 4104 vertices of a cube-shaped dense grid within a 46x36x32 cm volume. The database thus provides a tool for detailed analyses of beampatterns of spatial processing methods as well as for training and testing of mathematical models of the acoustic field.

We present a novel approach that improves the performance of reverberant speech separation. Our approach is based on an accurate geometric acoustic simulator (GAS) which generates realistic room impulse responses (RIRs) by modeling both specular and diffuse reflections. We also propose three training methods - pre-training, multi-stage training and curriculum learning that significantly improve separation quality in the presence of reverberation. We also demonstrate that mixing the synthetic RIRs with a small number of real RIRs during training enhances separation performance. We evaluate our …

In the context of building acoustics and the acoustic diagnosis of an existing room, this paper introduces and investigates a new approach to estimate mean absorption coefficients solely from a room impulse response (RIR). This inverse problem is tackled via virtually-supervised learning, namely, the RIR-to-absorption mapping is implicitly learned by regression on a simulated dataset using artificial neural networks. We focus on simple models based on well-understood architectures. The critical choices of geometric, acoustic and simulation parameters used to train the models are extensively di…

Room impulse response (RIR) functions capture how the surrounding physical environment transforms the sounds heard by a listener, with implications for various applications in AR, VR, and robotics. Whereas traditional methods to estimate RIRs assume dense geometry and/or sound measurements throughout the environment, we explore how to infer RIRs based on a sparse set of images and echoes observed in the space. Towards that goal, we introduce a transformer-based method that uses self-attention to build a rich acoustic context, then predicts RIRs of arbitrary query source-receiver locations thro…
