In this note, we study the Gaussian fluctuations for the Wishart matrices $d^{-1}\mathcal{X}_{n, d}\mathcal{X}^{T}_{n, d}$, where $\mathcal{X}_{n, d}$ is a $n\times d$ random matrix whose entries are jointly Gaussian and correlated with row and column covariance functions given by $r$ and $s$ respectively such that $r(0)=s(0)=1$. Under the assumptions $s\in \ell^{4/3}(\mathbb{Z})$ and $\|r\|_{\ell^1(\mathbb{Z})}< \sqrt{6}/2$, we establish the $\sqrt{n^3/d}$ convergence rate for the Wasserstein distance between a normalization of $d^{-1}\mathcal{X}_{n, d}\mathcal{X}^{T}_{n, d}$ and the corresponding Gaussian ensemble. This rate is the same as the optimal one computed in \cite{JL15,BG16,BDER16} for the total variation distance, in the particular case where the Gaussian entries of $\mathcal{X}_{n, d}$ are independent. Similarly, we obtain the $\sqrt{n^{2p-1}/d}$ convergence rate for the Wasserstein distance in the setting of random $p$-tensors of overall correlation. Our analysis is based on the Malliavin-Stein approach.
We derive a non-asymptotic expression for the moments of traces of monomials in several independent complex Wishart matrices, extending some explicit formulas available in the literature. We then deduce the explicit expression for the cumulants. From the latter, we read out the multivariate normal approximation to the traces of finite families of polynomials in independent complex Wishart matrices.
We use free probability to compute the limiting spectral properties of the harmonic mean of $n$ i.i.d. Wishart random matrices $\mathbf{W}_i$ whose limiting aspect ratio is $γ\in (0,1)$ when $\mathbb{E}[\mathbf{W}_i] = \mathbf{I}$. We demonstrate an interesting phenomenon where the harmonic mean $\mathbf{H}$ of the $n$ Wishart matrices is closer in operator norm to $\mathbb{E}[\mathbf{W}_i]$ than the arithmetic mean $\mathbf{A}$ for small $n$, after which the arithmetic mean is closer. We also prove some results for the general case where the expectation of the Wishart matrices are not the ide…
We prove that any non commutative polynomial of r independent copies of Wigner matrices converges a.s. towards the polynomial of r free semicircular variables in operator norm. This result extends a previous work of Haagerup and Thorbjornsen where GUE matrices are considered, as well as the classical asymptotic freeness for Wigner matrices (i.e. convergence of the moments) proved by Dykema. We also study the Wishart case.
In arXiv:1410.7268v3, the authors consider eigenvalues of overlapping Wishart matrices and prove that its fluctuations asymptotically convergence to the Gaussian free field. In this brief note, their result is extended to show that when the matrix entries undergo stochastic evolution, the fluctuations asymptotically converge to a three-dimensional Gaussian field, which has an explicit contour integral formula. This is analogous to the result of arXiv:1011.3544 for stochastic Wigner matrices.
In the paper we resolve positively the conjecture on a characterization of matrix Kummer and Wishart laws through independence property, which was posed in [Koudou, Statist. Probab. Lett. 82 (2012), 1903--1907] . Apart from the probabilistic result, we determine the general solution of the functional equation associated to the characterization problem under weak assumptions.
We prove the convergence of the empirical spectral measure of Wishart matrices with size-dependent entries and characterize the limiting law by its moments. We apply our result to the cases where the entries are Bernoulli variables with parameter c=n or truncated heavy-tailed random variables. In both cases, when c goes to infinity or when the truncation is small, the limiting spectrum is a perturbation of the Marchenko-Pastur distribution and we compute its leading term.
In this article, we will consider Wishart Matrices with correlated entries, but with a strictly log-concave law. It has been shown by A.Pajor and L.Pastur that the empirical measures of such matrices converges. We will show, under some symmetry and convergence hypotheses, that in this case the central limit theorem for linear statistics holds around their limit, and deduce the convergence of the support to the support of the limiting measure. We also provide the convergence of the Expectation and the Covariance.
We study the high-dimensional asymptotic regimes of correlated Wishart matrices $d^{-1}\mathcal{Y}\mathcal{Y}^T$, where $\mathcal{Y}$ is a $n\times d$ Gaussian random matrix with correlated and non-stationary entries. We prove that under different normalizations, two distinct regimes emerge as both $n$ and $d$ grow to infinity. The first regime is the one of central convergence, where the law of the properly renormalized Wishart matrices becomes close in Wasserstein distance to that of a Gaussian orthogonal ensemble matrix. In the second regime, a non-central convergence happens, and the law o…
In this paper we study the limiting distribution of the $k$ smallest gaps between eigenvalues of three kinds of random matrices -- the Ginibre ensemble, the Wishart ensemble and the universal unitary ensemble. All of them follow a Poissonian ansatz. More precisely, for the Ginibre ensemble we have a global result in which the $k$-th smallest gap has typical length $n^{-3/4}$ with density $x^{4k-1}e^{-x^4}$ after normalization. For the Wishart and the universal unitary ensemble, it has typical length $n^{-4/3}$ and has density $x^{3k-1}e^{-x^3}$ after normalization.
We generalize the following univariate characterization of the Kummer and Gamma distributions to the cone of symmetric positive definite matrices: let $X$ and $Y$ be independent, non-degenerate random variables valued in $(0, \infty)$, then $U= Y/(1+X)$ and $V = X(1+U)$ are independent if and only if $X$ follows the Kummer distribution and $Y$ follows the the Gamma distribution with appropriate parameters. We solve a related functional equation in the cone of symmetric positive definite matrices, which is our first main result and apply its solution to prove the characterization of Wishart and…
We study the random matrices of type $\tilde{W}=(id\otimesφ)W$, where $W$ is a complex Wishart matrix of parameters $(dn,dm)$, and $φ:M_n(\mathbb C)\to M_n(\mathbb C)$ is a self-adjoint linear map. We prove that, under suitable assumptions, we have the $d\to\infty$ eigenvalue distribution formula $δm\tilde{W}\simπ_{mnρ}\boxtimesν$, where $ρ$ is the law of $φ$, viewed as a square matrix, $π$ is the free Poisson law, $ν$ is the law of $D=φ(1)$, and $δ=tr(D)$.
Consider a doubly-infinite array of iid centered variables with moment conditions, from which one can extract a finite number of rectangular, overlapping submatrices, and form the corresponding Wishart matrices. We show that under basic smoothness assumptions, centered linear eigenstatistics of such matrices converge jointly to a Gaussian vector with an interesting covariance structure. This structure, which is similar to those appearing in work of Borodin, Borodin and Gorin, and Johnson and Pal can be described in terms of the height function, and leads to a connection with the Gaussian Free …
We present an exact formula for moments and cumulants of several real compound Wishart matrices in terms of an Euler characteristic expansion, similar to the genus expansion for complex random matrices. We consider their asymptotic values in the large matrix limit: as in a genus expansion, the terms which survive in the large matrix limit are those with the greatest Euler characteristic, that is, either spheres or collections of spheres. This topological construction motivates an algebraic expression for the moments and cumulants in terms of the symmetric group. We examine the combinatorial pr…
Associated to any complex Wishart matrix $W$ of parameters $(dn,dm)$ and any linear map $φ:M_n(\mathbb C)\to M_n(\mathbb C)$ is the "block-modified" matrix $\tilde{W}=(id\otimesφ)W$. Following some previous work with Nechita, we study here the asymptotic $*$-distribution of $\tilde{W}$, in the $d\to\infty$ limit, in the case where the modification map $φ$ is "easy", or more generally super-easy, in the quantum algebra/representation theory sense. Under suitable assumptions on $φ$ we obtain in this way a compound free Poisson law.
In this paper we consider the extreme behavior of the extremal eigenvalues of white Wishart matrices, which plays an important role in multivariate analysis. In particular, we focus on the case when the dimension of the feature p is much larger than or comparable to the number of observations n, a common situation in modern data analysis. We provide asymptotic approximations and bounds for the tail probabilities of the extremal eigenvalues. Moreover, we construct efficient Monte Carlo simulation algorithms to compute the tail probabilities. Simulation results show that our method has the best …
This paper extends the work of El Karoui [Ann. Probab. 35 (2007) 663--714] which finds the Tracy--Widom limit for the largest eigenvalue of a nonsingular $p$-dimensional complex Wishart matrix $W_{\mathbb{C}}(Ω_p,n)$ to the case of several of the largest eigenvalues of the possibly singular $(n<p)$ matrix $W_{\mathbb{C}}(Ω_p,n).$ As a byproduct, we extend all results of Baik, Ben Arous and Peche [Ann. Probab. 33 (2005) 1643--1697] to the singular Wishart matrix case. We apply our findings to obtain a 95% confidence set for the number of common risk factors in excess stock returns.
We show that the partial transposes of complex Wishart random matrices are asymptotically free. We also investigate regimes where the number of blocks is fixed but the size of the blocks increases. This gives a example where the partial transpose produces freeness at the operator level. Finally we investigate the case of real Wishart matrices.
We extend Stein's celebrated Wasserstein bound for normal approximation via exchangeable pairs to the multi-dimensional setting. As an intermediate step, we exploit the symmetry of exchangeable pairs to obtain an error bound for smooth test functions. We also obtain a continuous version of the multi-dimensional Wasserstein bound in terms of fourth moments. We apply the main results to multivariate normal approximations to Wishart matrices of size $n$ and degree $d$, where we obtain the optimal convergence rate $\sqrt{n^3/d}$ under only moment assumptions, and to quadratic forms and Poisson fun…
We study the fluctuations, as $d,n\to \infty$, of the Wishart matrix $\mathcal{W}_{n,d}= \frac{1}{d} \mathcal{X}_{n,d} \mathcal{X}_{n,d}^{T} $ associated to a $n\times d$ random matrix $\mathcal{X}_{n,d}$ with non-Gaussian entries. We analyze the limiting behavior in distribution of $\mathcal{W}_{n,d}$ in two situations: when the entries of $\mathcal{X}_{n,d}$ are independent elements of a Wiener chaos of arbitrary order and when the entries are partially correlated and belong to the second Wiener chaos. In the first case, we show that the (suitably normalized) Wishart matrix converges in dist…
We study the eigenvalue behaviour of large complex correlated Wishart matrices near an interior point of the limiting spectrum where the density vanishes (cusp point), and refine the existing results at the hard edge as well. More precisely, under mild assumptions for the population covariance matrix, we show that the limiting density vanishes at generic cusp points like a cube root, and that the local eigenvalue behaviour is described by means of the Pearcey kernel if an extra decay assumption is satisfied. As for the hard edge, we show that the density blows up like an inverse square root at…
A famous result of Horn and Fitzgerald is that the $β$-th Hadamard power of any $n\times n$ positive semi-definite (p.s.d) matrix with non-negative entries is p.s.d $\forall β\geq n-2$ and is not necessarliy p.s.d for $β< n-2,$ with $\ β\notin \mathbb{N}$. In this article, we study this question for random Wishart matrix $A_n:={X_nX_n^T}$, where $X_n$ is $n\times n$ matrix with i.i.d. Gaussians. It is shown that applying $x\rightarrow |x|^α$ entrywise to $A_n$, the resulting matrix is p.s.d, with high probability, for $α>1$ and is not p.s.d, with high probability, for $α<1$. It is also shown t…
We extend the relation between random matrices and free probability theory from the level of expectations to the level of fluctuations. We introduce the concept of "second order freeness" and derive the global fluctuations of Gaussian and Wishart random matrices by a general limit theorem for second order freeness. By introducing cyclic Fock space, we also give an operator algebraic model for the fluctuations of our random matrices in terms of the usual creation, annihilation, and preservation operators. We show that orthogonal families of Gaussian and Wishart random matrices are asymptoticall…
We consider high-dimensional Wishart matrices $d^{-1}\mathcal{X}_{n,d}\mathcal{X}_{n,d}^T$, associated with a rectangular random matrix $\mathcal{X}_{n,d}$ of size $n\times d$ whose entries are jointly Gaussian and correlated. Even if we will consider the case of overall correlation among the entries of $\mathcal{X}_{n,d}$, our main focus is on the case where the rows of $\mathcal{X}_{n,d}$ are independent copies of a $n$-dimensional stationary centered Gaussian vector of correlation function $s$. When $s$ belongs to $\ell^{4/3}(\mathbb{Z})$, we show that a proper normalization of $d^{-1}\math…
The literature presents the characteristic function of the Wishart distribution on m times m matrices as an inverse power of the determinant of the Fourier variable, the exponent being the positive, real shape parameter. I demonstrate that only for two times two matrices, this expression is unambiguous -- in this case the complex range of the determinant excludes the negative real line. When m greater or equals 3 the range of the determinant contains closed lines around the origin, hence a single branch of the complex logarithm does not suffice to define the determinant's power. To resolve thi…
We introduce a family of matrices with non-commutative entries that generalize the classical real Wishart matrices. With the help of the Brauer product, we derive a non-asymptotic expression for the moments of traces of monomials in such matrices; the expression is quite similar to the formula derived in our previous work for independent complex Wishart matrices. We then analyze the fluctuations about the Marchenko-Pastur law. We show that after centering by the mean, traces of real symmetric polynomials in q-Wishart matrices converge in distribution, and we identify the asymptotic law as the …
Using a change-of-measure argument, we prove an equality in law between the process of largest eigenvalues in a generalized Wishart random-matrix process and a last-passage percolation process. This equality in law was conjectured by Borodin and Peche.
Wishart matrices are one of the fundamental matrix models in multivariate statistics. We consider the classical $(m,n,β)$-Laguerre ensemble and give a necessary and sufficient condition for finite moments for the inverse of $(m,n,β)$-Laguerre matrices to exist. We extend the result to inverse compound Wishart matrices for the values of $β= 1$ and $2$. Our result complements the result by Letac and Massam [6], Matsumoto [7] and Collins et al. [1].
The ergodic unitarily invariant measures on the space of infinite Hermitian matrices have been classified by Pickrell and Olshanski-Vershik. The much-studied complex inverse Wishart measures form a projective family, thus giving rise to a unitarily invariant measure on infinite positive-definite matrices. In this paper we completely solve the corresponding problem of ergodic decomposition for this measure.
We show how the replica method can be used to compute the asymptotic eigenvalue spectrum of a real Wishart product matrix. For unstructured factors, this provides a compact, elementary derivation of a polynomial condition on the Stieltjes transform first proved by Müller [IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory. 48, 2086-2091 (2002)]. We then show how this computation can be extended to ensembles where the factors are drawn from matrix Gaussian distributions with general correlation structure. For both unstructured and structured ensembles, we derive polynomial conditions on the average values of the minimum …
This note reports partial results related to the Gaussian product inequality (GPI) conjecture for the joint distribution of traces of Wishart matrices. In particular, several GPI-related results from Wei (2014) and Liu et al. (2015) are extended in two ways: by replacing the power functions with more general classes of functions, and by replacing the usual Gaussian and multivariate gamma distributional assumptions by the more general trace-Wishart distribution assumption. These findings suggest that a Kronecker product form of the GPI holds for diagonal blocks of any Wishart distribution.
To a $N \times N$ real symmetric matrix Kerov assigns a piecewise linear function whose local minima are the eigenvalues of this matrix and whose local maxima are the eigenvalues of its $(N-1) \times (N-1)$ submatrix. We study the scaling limit of Kerov's piecewise linear functions for Wigner and Wishart matrices. For Wigner matrices the scaling limit is given by the Verhik-Kerov-Logan-Shepp curve which is known from asymptotic representation theory. For Wishart matrices the scaling limit is also explicitly found, and we explain its relation to the Marchenko-Pastur limit spectral law.
Based on the multivariate saddle point method we study the asymptotic behavior of the characteristic polynomials associated to Wishart type random matrices that are formed as products consisting of independent standard complex Gaussian and a truncated Haar distributed unitary random matrix. These polynomials form a general class of hypergeometric functions of type \(_2 F_r\). We describe the oscillatory behavior on the asymptotic interval of zeros by means of formulae of Plancherel-Rotach type and subsequently use it to obtain the limiting distribution of the suitably rescaled zeros. Moreover,…
For a random matrix following a Wishart distribution, we derive formulas for the expectation and the covariance matrix of compound matrices. The compound matrix of order $m$ is populated by all $m\times m$-minors of the Wishart matrix. Our results yield first and second moments of the minors of the sample covariance matrix for multivariate normal observations. This work is motivated by the fact that such minors arise in the expression of constraints on the covariance matrix in many classical multivariate problems.
We study the partial transposition ${W}^Γ=(\mathrm{id}\otimes \mathrm{t})W\in M_{dn}(\mathbb C)$ of a Wishart matrix $W\in M_{dn}(\mathbb C)$ of parameters $(dn,dm)$. Our main result is that, with $d\to\infty$, the law of $m{W}^Γ$ is a free difference of free Poisson laws of parameters $m(n\pm 1)/2$. Motivated by questions in quantum information theory, we also derive necessary and sufficient conditions for these measures to be supported on the positive half line.
We study the behavior of a real $p$-dimensional Wishart random matrix with $n$ degrees of freedom when $n,p\rightarrow\infty$ but $p/n\rightarrow 0$. We establish the existence of phase transitions when $p$ grows at the order $n^{(K+1)/(K+3)}$ for every $k\in\mathbb{N}$, and derive expressions for approximating densities between every two phase transitions. To do this, we make use of a novel tool we call the G-transform of a distribution, which is closely related to the characteristic function. We also derive an extension of the $t$-distribution to the real symmetric matrices, which naturally …
We prove that the number of iterations required to solve a random positive definite linear system with the conjugate gradient algorithm is almost deterministic for large matrices. We treat the case of Wishart matrices $W = XX^*$ where $X$ is $n \times m$ and $n/m \sim d$ for $0 < d < 1$. Precisely, we prove that for most choices of error tolerance, as the matrix increases in size, the probability that the iteration count deviates from an explicit deterministic value tends to zero. In addition, for a fixed iteration count, we show that the norm of the error vector and the norm of the residual c…
We consider high dimensional Wishart matrices $\mathbb{X} \mathbb{X}^{\top}$ where the entries of $\mathbb{X} \in {\mathbb{R}^{n \times d}}$ are i.i.d. from a log-concave distribution. We prove an information theoretic phase transition: such matrices are close in total variation distance to the corresponding Gaussian ensemble if and only if $d$ is much larger than $n^3$. Our proof is entropy-based, making use of the chain rule for relative entropy along with the recursive structure in the definition of the Wishart ensemble. The proof crucially relies on the well known relation between Fisher i…
We define an indefinite Wishart matrix as a matrix of the form A=W^{T}WΣ, where Σis an indefinite diagonal matrix and W is a matrix of independent standard normals. We focus on the case where W is L by 2 which has engineering applications. We obtain the distribution of the ratio of the eigenvalues of A. This distribution can be "folded" to give the distribution of the condition number. We calculate formulas for W real (β=1), complex (β=2), quaternionic (β=4) or any ghost 0<β<\infty. We then corroborate our work by comparing them against numerical experiments.
We study the asymptotic behavior of eigenvalues of large complex correlated Wishart matrices at the edges of the limiting spectrum. In this setting, the support of the limiting eigenvalue distribution may have several connected components. Under mild conditions for the population matrices, we show that for every generic positive edge of that support, there exists an extremal eigenvalue which converges almost surely toward that edge and fluctuates according to the Tracy-Widom law at the scale $N^{2/3}$. Moreover, given several generic positive edges, we establish that the associated extremal ei…
The problem considered in this paper is to find when the non-central Wishart distribution, defined on the cone $\bar{\mathcal{P}_d}$ of semi positive definite matrices of order $d$ and with a real valued shape parameter, exists. We reduce this problem to the problem of existence of the measures $m(n,k,d)$ defined on $\bar{\mathcal{P}_d}$ and with Laplace transform $(\det s)^{-n/2}\exp \tr(s^{-1}w)$ where $n$ is an integer and where $w=\mathrm{diag}(0,...,0,1,...,1)$ has order $d$ and rank $k.$ We compute $m(d-1,d,d)$ and we show that neither $m(d-2,d,d)$ nor $m(d-2,d-1,d)$ exist. This proves a…

We give formulae for the cumulants of complex Wishart (LUE) and inverse Wishart matrices (inverse LUE). Their large-$N$ expansions are generating functions of double (strictly and weakly) monotone Hurwitz numbers which count constrained factorisations in the symmetric group. The two expansions can be compared and combined with a duality relation proved in [F. D. Cunden, F. Mezzadri, N. O'Connell and N. J. Simm, arXiv:1805.08760] to obtain: i) a combinatorial proof of the reflection formula between moments of LUE and inverse LUE at genus zero and, ii) a new functional relation between the gener…

Vinberg cones and the ambient vector spaces are important in modern statistics of sparse models and of graphical models. The aim of this paper is to study eigenvalue distributions of Gaussian, Wigner and covariance matrices related to growing Vinberg matrices, corresponding to growing daisy graphs. For Gaussian or Wigner ensembles, we give an explicit formula for the limiting distribution. For Wishart ensembles defined naturally on Vinberg cones, their limiting Stieltjes transforms, support and atom at 0 are described explicitly in terms of the Lambert-Tsallis functions, which are defined by u…
The aim of this note is to provide a pedagogical survey of the recent works by the authors ( arXiv:1409.7548 and arXiv:1507.06013) concerning the local behavior of the eigenvalues of large complex correlated Wishart matrices at the edges and cusp points of the spectrum: Under quite general conditions, the eigenvalues fluctuations at a soft edge of the limiting spectrum, at the hard edge when it is present, or at a cusp point, are respectively described by mean of the Airy kernel, the Bessel kernel, or the Pearcey kernel. Moreover, the eigenvalues fluctuations at several soft edges are asymptot…
We study asymptotic distributions of large dimensional random matrices of the form $BB^{*}$, where $B$ is a product of $p$ rectangular random matrices, using free probability and combinatorics of colored labeled noncrossing partitions. These matrices are taken from the set of off-diagonal blocks of the family $\mathcal{Y}$ of independent Hermitian random matrices which are asymptotically free, asymptotically free against the family of deterministic diagonal matrices, and whose norms are uniformly bounded almost surely. This class includes unitarily invariant Hermitian random matrices with limi…
A recent line of work has studied the relationship between the Wishart matrix $X^\top X$, where $X\in \mathbb{R}^{d\times n}$ has i.i.d. standard Gaussian entries, and the corresponding Gaussian matrix with independent entries above the diagonal. Jiang and Li (2015) and Bubeck et al. (2016) showed that these two matrix ensembles converge in total variation whenever $d/n^3\to \infty$, and Bubeck et al. (2016) showed this to be sharp. In this paper we aim to identify the precise threshold for $d$ in terms of $n$ for subsets of Wishart matrices to converge in total variation to independent Gaussi…
We study the central limit theorem for sums of independent tensor powers, $\frac{1}{\sqrt{d}}\sum\limits_{i=1}^d X_i^{\otimes p}$. We focus on the high-dimensional regime where $X_i \in \mathbb{R}^n$ and $n$ may scale with $d$. Our main result is a proposed threshold for convergence. Specifically, we show that, under some regularity assumption, if $n^{2p-1}\gg d$, then the normalized sum converges to a Gaussian. The results apply, among others, to symmetric uniform log-concave measures and to product measures. This generalizes several results found in the literature. Our main technique is a no…
We study the probability distribution function (PDF) of the smallest eigenvalue of Laguerre-Wishart matrices $W = X^\dagger X$ where $X$ is a random $M \times N$ ($M \geq N$) matrix, with complex Gaussian independent entries. We compute this PDF in terms of semi-classical orthogonal polynomials, which are deformations of Laguerre polynomials. By analyzing these polynomials, and their associated recurrence relations, in the limit of large $N$, large $M$ with $M/N \to 1$ -- i.e. for quasi-square large matrices $X$ -- we show that this PDF, in the hard edge limit, can be expressed in terms of the…
