In the present paper, the 3+1 decomposition of the spacetime onto hypersurface(s) is analysed and established for theories within the Palatini formalism by considering a general function of the Ricci scalar in the gravitational action. The corresponding Gauss-Codazzi relations are obtained and the boundary term that has to be subtracted in the gravitational action is easily deduced. Then, these relations are applied to the so-called ADM decomposition to describe the foliation of the spacetime onto hypersurfaces of constant time within these theories. Finally, the junction conditions are also obtained by using a decomposition in Gaussian normal coordinates, which coincide with the conditions deduced previously through different approaches.
We show that, within some modified gravity theories, such as the Palatini models, the non-linear nature of the field equations implies that the usual naive averaging procedure (replacing the microscopic energy-momentum by its cosmological average) could be invalid. As a consequence, the relative motion of particles in Palatini theories is actually indistinguishable from that predicted by General Relativity. Moreover, there is no WEP violation. Our new and most important result is that the cosmology and astrophysics, or put more generally, the behaviours on macroscopic scales, predicted by thes…
We consider a novel class of $f(\R)$ gravity theories where the connection is related to the conformally scaled metric $\hat g_{μν}=C(\R)g_{μν}$ with a scaling that depends on the scalar curvature $\R$ only. We call them C-theories and show that the Einstein and Palatini gravities can be obtained as special limits. In addition, C-theories include completely new physically distinct gravity theories even when $f(\R)=\R$. With nonlinear $f(\R)$, C-theories interpolate and extrapolate the Einstein and Palatini cases and may avoid some of their conceptual and observational problems. We further show…
In this work, we present the f(R)-Einstein-Palatini formalism in arbitrary dimensions and the study of consistency applied to brane models, the so-called braneworld sum rules. We show that it is possible a scenario of thick branes in five dimensions with compact extra dimension in the framework of the f(R)-Einstein-Palatini theory by the accomplishment of an assertive criteria.
By using the equivalence between metric and Palatini f(R) (or "modified") gravities with omega=0, -3/2 Brans-Dicke theories, it is shown that the Ehlers-Geren-Sachs theorem of general relativity is extended to modified gravity. In the case of metric f(R) gravity previously studied, this agrees with previous literature.
We compare the metric and the Palatini formalism to obtain the Einstein equations in the presence of higher-order curvature corrections that consist of contractions of the Riemann tensor, but not of its derivatives. We find that there is a class of theories for which the two formalisms are equivalent. This class contains the Palatini version of Lovelock theory, but also more Lagrangians that are not Lovelock, but respect certain symmetries. For the general case, we find that imposing the Levi-Civita connection as an Ansatz, the Palatini formalism is contained within the metric formalism, in th…
An explicit proof of the vanishing of the covariant divergence of the energy-momentum tensor in modified theories of gravity is presented. The gravitational action is written in arbitrary dimensions and allowed to depend nonlinearly on the curvature scalar and its couplings with a scalar field. Also the case of a function of the curvature scalar multiplying a matter Lagrangian is considered. The proof is given both in the metric and in the first-order formalism, i.e. under the Palatini variational principle. It is found that the covariant conservation of energy-momentum is built-in to the fiel…
We discuss the conformal symmetry between Jordan and Einstein frames considering their relations with the metric and Palatini formalisms for modified gravity. Appropriate conformal transformations are taken into account leading to the evident connection between the gravitational actions in the two mentioned frames and the Hilbert-Einstein action with a cosmological constant. We show that the apparent differences between Palatini and metric formalisms strictly depend on the representation while the number of degrees of freedom is preserved. This means that the dynamical content of both formalis…
When considered in the Palatini formalism, the Starobinsky model does not provide us with a mechanism for inflation due to the absence of a propagating scalar degree of freedom. By (non)--minimally coupling scalar fields to the Starobinsky model in the Palatini formalism we can in principle describe the inflationary epoch. In this article, we focus on the minimally coupled quartic and natural inflation models. Both theories are excluded in their simplest realization since they predict values for the inflationary observables that are outside the limits set by the Planck data. However, with the …
We consider cosmological scalar field evolving under exponential potential of the Non-minimal Derivative Coupling (NMDC) gravity model in Palatini formalism. Slow-roll regime is assumed. GR and metric formalism NMDC cases are compared in this study. Phase portraits show that Palatini NMDC effect restricts acceleration phase into smaller region in the phase space. NMDC effect of the Palatini case suppresses expansion rate than that of the GR while the metric NMDC enhances rate of expansion of the GR case.
We compute the complete post-Newtonian limit of the Palatini form of f(R) gravities using a scalar-tensor representation. By comparing the predictions of these theories with laboratory and solar system experiments, we find a set of inequalities that any lagrangian f(R) must satisfy. The constraints imposed by those inequalities allow us to find explicit functions that bound from above and from below the possible nonlinear terms of the lagrangian. We conclude that the lagrangian f(R) must be almost linear in R and that nonlinear corrections that grow at low curvatures are incompatible with obse…
In this paper we generalize the off-shell Abbott-Deser-Tekin (ADT) conserved charge formalism to Palatini theory of gravity with torsion and non-metricity. Our construction is based on the coordinate formalism and the independent dynamic fields are the metric and the affine connection. For a general Palatini theory of gravity, which is diffeomorphism invariant up to a boundary term, we obtain the most general expression for off-shell ADT potential. As explicit examples, we derive the off-shell ADT potentials for Einstein-Hilbert action, the most general $L(g_{μν}, R^λ{}_{ναμ}, T^λ{}_{αβ}, Q_{α…
A class of scalar-tensor theories (STT) including a non-metricity that unifies metric, Palatini and hybrid metric-Palatini gravitational actions with non-minimal interaction is proposed and investigated from the point of view of their consistency with generalized conformal transformations. It is shown that every such theory can be represented on-shell by a purely metric STT possessing the same solutions for a metric and a scalar field. A set of generalized invariants is also proposed. This extends the formalism previously introduced in \cite{kozak2019}. We then apply the formalism to Starobins…
The equivalence between metric and Palatini formalisms in f(R)-gravity can be achieved in the general context of theories with divergence free current. This equivalence is a necessary result of a symmetry which is included in a particular conservation equation of the current. In fact the conservation equation, by an appropriate redefinition of the introduced auxiliary field, may be encoded in a massless scalar field equation.
We investigate thermodynamics of the apparent horizon in $f(R)$ gravity in the Palatini formalism with non-equilibrium and equilibrium descriptions. We demonstrate that it is more transparent to understand the horizon entropy in the equilibrium framework than that in the non-equilibrium one. Furthermore, we show that the second law of thermodynamics can be explicitly verified in both phantom and non-phantom phases for the same temperature of the universe outside and inside the apparent horizon.
We study nonlinear gravity theories in both the metric and the Palatini (metric-affine) formalisms. The nonlinear character of the gravity lagrangian in the metric formalism causes the appearance of a scalar source of matter in Einstein's equations that can be interpreted as a quintessence field. However, in the Palatini case no new energy sources appear, though the equations of motion get modified in such a way that usual matter can lead to repulsive gravity at very low densities. Thus, the Palatini formalism could provide a mechanism to explain the recent acceleration of the universe without…
A modified model of gravity with additional positive and negative powers of the scalar curvature, $R$, in the gravitational action is studied. This is done using the Palatini variational principle. It is demonstrated that using such a model might prove useful to explain both the early time inflation and the late time cosmic acceleration without the need for any form of dark energy.
The Einstein field equations can be derived in $n$ dimensions ($n>2$) by the variations of the Palatini action. The Killing reduction of 5-dimensional Palatini action is studied on the assumption that pentads and Lorentz connections are preserved by the Killing vector field. A Palatini formalism of 4-dimensional action for gravity coupled to a vector field and a scalar field is obtained, which gives exactly the same fields equations in Kaluza-Klein theory.
We consider the weak field limit of gravity in the vierbein-Einstein-Palatini formalism, find the action and the equations for perturbations around an arbitrary background, and compare them with the usual metric perturbation equations. We also write the Fierz-Pauli equations for massive gravitons on an arbitrary curved background in this formalism.
We consider the Palatini formalism of the Born-Infeld gravity. In the Palatini formalism, the propagating mode is only graviton, whose situation is different from that in the metric formalism. We discuss about the FRW cosmology by using an effective potential. Especially we consider the condition that the bouncing could occur. We also give some speculations about the black hole formation
We consider several physical scenarios where black holes within classical gravity theories including $R^2$ and Ricci-squared corrections and formulated à la Palatini can be analytically studied.
Most no-hair theorems involve the assumption that the scalar field is independent of time. Recently in [Phys. Rev. D90 (2014) 041501(R)] the existence of time-dependent scalar hair outside a stationary black hole in general relativity was ruled out. We generalize this work to modified gravities and non-minimally coupled scalar field with an additional assumption that the spacetime is axisymmetric. It is shown that in higher-order gravity such as metric $f(R)$ gravity the time-dependent scalar hair doesn't exist. While in Palatini $f(R)$ gravity and non-minimally coupled case the time-dependent…
We derive a new set of field equations within the framework of the Palatini formalism. These equations are a natural generalization of the Einstein-Maxwell equations which arise by adding a function $\mathcal{F}(\mathcal{Q})$, with $\mathcal{Q}\equiv F^{αβ}F_{αβ}$ to the Palatini Lagrangian $f(R,Q)$.The result we obtain can be viewed as the coupling of gravity with a nonlinear extension of the electromagnetic field. In addition,a new method is introduced to solve the algebraic equation associated to the Ricci tensor.
Recently D. Vollick [Phys. Rev. D68, 063510 (2003)] has shown that the inclusion of the 1/R curvature terms in the gravitational action and the use of the Palatini formalism offer an alternative explanation for cosmological acceleration. In this work we show not only that this model of Vollick does not have a good Newtonian limit, but also that any f(R) theory with a pole of order n in R=0 and its second derivative respect to R evaluated at Ro is not zero, where Ro is the scalar curvature of background, does not have a good Newtonian limit.
The Ostrogradsky instability of higher derivative Lagrangians is derived from first principles using Control theory and Lyapunov Stability Analysis. This result is then used to argue that Born-Infeld Lagrangians are viable modifications of the Einstein-Hilbert action provided the action is varied in accordance with the Palatini formalism, in contrast to the metric formalism. Finally, the Born-Infeld version of the FRW equations are derived and the cosmological dynamics is studied for matter dominated closed and open universes, and the results are compared with the usual cosmology.
We study scalar field inflation in $F(R)$ gravity in the Palatini formulation of general relativity. Unlike in the metric formulation, in the Palatini formulation $F(R)$ gravity does not introduce new degrees of freedom. However, it changes the relations between existing degrees of freedom, including the inflaton and spacetime curvature. Considering the case $F(R)=R+αR^2$, we find that the $R^2$ term decreases the height of the effective inflaton potential. By adjusting the value of $α$, this mechanism can be used to suppress the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ without limit in any scalar field mod…
The speed of light is a complicated synthesizer quantity with distinctive origins which lead to coincident values in the standard theory. Due to the fact that different aspects of speed of light do not coincide in the local inertial frame for different Palatini modified gravity theories, when deviating from general relativity, one should consider which aspect of speed of light should be taken into account meticulously and unambiguously. The aim of this study is mainly investigating the modification of the SN Ia luminosity distance, for two f(R) and f(RR) extended theories in the local inertial…
We construct a relativistic metric description of MOND using the Palatini formalism following the \( f(χ)=χ^b \) description of \citet{mendozatula}. We show that in order to recover the non-relativistic MOND regime where, for circular orbits the Tully-Fisher law replaces Kepler's third law, the value of the parameter $ b = 3/2 $, which is coincident with the value found using a pure metric formalism Capozziello et al. (2011). Unlike the pure metric formalism, which yields 4th order field equations, the Palatini approach yields second order field equations, which is a desirable requirement from…
We present a simple generalisation of the $Λ$CDM model which on the one hand reaches very good agreement with the present day experimental data and provides an internal inflationary mechanism on the other hand. It is based on Palatini modified gravity with quadratic Starobinsky term and generalized Chaplygin gas as a matter source providing, besides a current accelerated expansion, the epoch of endogenous inflation driven by type III freeze singularity. It follows from our statistical analysis that astronomical data favors negative value of the parameter coupling quadratic term into Einstein-H…
We revisit the problem of defining non-minimal gravity in the first order formalism. Specializing to scalar-tensor theories, which may be disguised as `higher-derivative' models with the gravitational Lagrangians that depend only on the Ricci scalar, we show how to recast these theories as Palatini-like gravities. The correct formulation utilizes the Lagrange multiplier method, which preserves the canonical structure of the theory, and yields the conventional metric scalar-tensor gravity. We explain the discrepancies between the naïve Palatini and the Lagrange multiplier approach, showing that…
We consider the static domain wall braneworld scenario constructed from the Palatini formalism $f(\mathcal{R})$ theory. We check the self-consistency under scalar perturbations. By using the scalar-tensor formalism we avoid dealing with the higher-order equations. We develop the techniques to deal with the coupled system. We show that under some conditions, the scalar perturbation simply oscillates with time, which guarantees the stability. We also discuss the localization condition of the scalar mode by analyzing the effective potential and the fifth dimensional profile of the scalar mode. We…
A general $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravitational theory is considered within the Palatini formalism. By applying the variational principle and the usual conditions on the boundary, we show explicitly that a surface term remains such that as in their metric-compatible counterparts, an additional surface term has to be added in the gravitational action, which plays a fundamental role when calculating the entropy of the black hole.
We study reheating of inflationary models with general non-minimal coupling $K(ϕ)R$ with $K(ϕ)\sim \sqrt{V(ϕ)}$ where $R$ is the Ricci scalar and $V$ is the inflaton potential. In particular, when we take the monomial potential $K(ϕ) \propto ϕ^m$ with $m \in \mathbb{Z}_+$, we provide general analytic expressions for cosmological observables. We consider a wide range of non-minimal coupling $ ξ\in [0, \infty) $ in metric and Palatini formalisms and derive the predictions for cosmological observables and the reheating temperature taking a general equation of state parameter $ w_\text{reh} $.
We investigate the UV-completion of the Higgs inflation in the metric and the Palatini formalisms. It is known that the cutoff scales for the perturbative unitarity of these inflation models become much smaller than the Planck scale to be consistent with observations. Expecting that the low cutoff scale originates in the curvature of a field-space spanned by the Higgs fields, we consider embedding the curved field-space into a higher dimensional flat space and apply this procedure to the metric-Higgs and the Palatini-Higgs scenarios. The new field introduced in this way successfully flattens t…
We study the generalized version of energy-momentum squared gravity (EMSG) in the Palatini formalism. This theory allows the existence of a scalar constructed with energy-momentum tensor as $T_{αβ}T^{αβ}$ in the generic action of the theory. We study the most general form of this theory in the Palatini framework and present the underlying field equations. The equations of motion of a massive test particle have been derived. The weak field limit of the theory is explored and the generalized version of the Poisson equation is obtained. Moreover, we explore the cosmological behavior of the theory…
In Cuzinatto et al. [Phys. Rev. D 93, 124034 (2016)], it has been demonstrated that theories of gravity in which the Lagrangian includes terms depending on the scalar curvature $R$ and its derivatives up to order $n$, i.e. $f\left(R,\nabla_μR,\nabla_{μ_{1}}\nabla_{μ_{2}}R,\dots,\nabla_{μ_{1}}\dots\nabla_{μ_{n}}R\right)$ theories of gravity, are equivalent to scalar-multitensorial theories in the Jordan frame. In particular, in the metric and Palatini formalisms, this scalar-multitensorial equivalent scenario shows a structure that resembles that of the Brans-Dicke theories with a kinetic term …
Affine gravity and the Palatini formalism contribute both to produce a simple and unique formula for calculating charges at spatial and null infinity for Lovelock type Lagrangians whose variational derivatives do not depend on second-order derivatives of the field components. The method is based on the covariant generalization due to Julia and Silva of the Regge-Teitelboim procedure that was used to define properly the mass in the classical formulation of Einstein's theory of gravity. Numerous applications reproduce standard results obtained by other secure but mostly specialized methods. As a…
We investigate cosmological perturbations of scalar-tensor theories in Palatini formalism. First we introduce an action where the Ricci scalar is conformally coupled to a function of a scalar field and its kinetic term and there is also a k-essence term consisting of the scalar and its kinetic term. This action has three frames that are equivalent to one another: the original Jordan frame, the Einstein frame where the metric is redefined, and the Riemann frame where the connection is redefined. For the first time in the literature, we calculate the quadratic action and the sound speed of scala…
A new model for inflation using modified gravity in the Palatini formalism is constructed. Here non-minimal coupling of scalar field h with the curvature R as a general function f(R,h) is considered. Explicit inflation models for some choices of f(R,h) are developed. By writing an equivalent scalar-tensor action for this model and going over to Einstein frame, slow roll parameters are constructed. There exists a large parameter space which satisfies values of n_s and limits on r compatible with Planck 2018 data. Further, we calculate reheating temperature and the number of e-folds at the end o…
It is known that the metric and Palatini formalisms of gravity theories have their own interesting features but also suffer from some different drawbacks. Recently, a novel gravity theory called hybrid metric-Palatini gravity was put forward to cure or improve their individual deficiencies. The action of this gravity theory is a hybrid combination of the usual Einstein-Hilbert action and a $f(\mathcal{R})$ term constructed by the Palatini formalism. Interestingly, it seems that the existence of a light and long-range scalar field in this gravity may modify the cosmological and galactic dynamic…
Under conformal transformation, f(R) theory of gravity in Palatini formalism leads to a Brans-Dicke type of scalar-tensor equivalent theory with a wrong sign in the effective kinetic energy term. This means, the effective scalar acts as the dark energy and so late-time cosmic acceleration in matter-dominated era is accountable. However, we unveil some aspects of Palatini formalism, which clearly reveals the fact that the formalism is not suitable to explain the cosmological evolution of the early universe with $f(\mathfrak{R})$ gravity alone. Additionally, it is noticed that some authors, in a…
The inflationary dynamics and preheating in a model with a non-minimally coupled inflaton field in the metric and Palatini formalisms are studied in this paper. We find that in both formalisms, irrespective of the initial conditions, our Universe will evolve into a slow-roll inflationary era and then the scalar field rolls into an oscillating phase. The value of the scalar field at the end of the inflation in the Palatini formalism is always larger than that in the metric one, which becomes more and more obvious with the increase of the absolute value of the coupling parameter $|ξ|$. During th…
A generalized Brans-Dicke (GBD) theory in the framework of Palatini formalism are proposed in this paper. We derive the field equations by using the variational approach and obtain the linearized equations by using the weak-field approximation method. We show various properties of the geometrical scalar field in the Palatini-formalism of GBD theory: it is massless and source-free, which are different from the results given in the metric-formalism of GBD theory. Also, we investigate the polarization modes of gravitational waves (GWs) by using the the geodesic deviation method and the Newman-Pen…
We make a detailed study of matter density perturbations in both metric and Palatini formalisms in theories whose Lagrangian density is a general function, f(R), of the Ricci scalar. We derive these equations in a number of gauges. We show that for viable models that satisfy cosmological and local gravity constraints (LGC), matter perturbation equations derived under a sub-horizon approximation are valid even for super-Hubble scales provided the oscillating mode (scalaron) does not dominate over the matter-induced mode. Such approximate equations are especially reliable in the Palatini formali…
We consider the Palatini formalism of gravity with cosmological constant $Λ$ coupled to a scalar field $ϕ$ in $n$-dimensions. The $n$-dimensional Einstein equations with $Λ$ can be derived by the variation of the coupled Palatini action provided $n>2$. The Hamiltonian analysis of the coupled action is carried out by a $1+(n-1)$ decomposition of the spacetime. It turns out that both Palatini action and Hilbert action lead to the same geometric dynamics in the presence of $Λ$ and $ϕ$. While, the $n$-dimensional Palatini action could not give a connection dynamics formalism directly.
In symmetry based approaches to black hole entropy, we calculate the central charge of the Virasoro algebra in the first order formulation of gravity for both Palatini and Holst actions. In these calculations, we made use of the NHEK metric and the Kerr-CFT correspondence. For the Palatini action the results obtained in the second order formulation are reproduced. We also argue that the Holst term does not contribute to the charge algebra no matter what geometry/boundary conditions one is considering.
Although several models of $f(R)$ theories of gravity within the Palatini approach have been studied already, the interest was concentrated on those that have an effect on the late-time evolution of the universe, by the inclusion for example of terms inversely proportional to the scalar curvature in the gravitational action. However, additional positive powers of the curvature also provide interesting early-time phenomenology, like inflation, and the presence of such terms in the action is equally, if not more, probable. In the present paper models with both additional positive and negative po…
In this paper, we review modified $f(R)$ theories of gravity in Palatini formalism. In this framework, , we use the Raychaudhuri's equation along with the requirement that the gravity is attractive, which holds for any geometrical theory of gravity to discuss the energy conditions. Then, to derive these conditions, we obtain an expression for effective pressure and energy density by considering FLRW metric. Energy conditions derived in Palatini version of $f(R)$ Gravity differ from those derived in GR. We will see that the WEC (weak energy condition) derived in Palatini formalism has exactly t…
We investigate cosmological consequences of a class of exponential $f(R)$ gravity in the Palatini formalism. By using the current largest type Ia Supernova sample along with determinations of the cosmic expansion at intermediary and high-$z$ we impose tight constraints on the model parameters. Differently from other $f(R)$ models, we find solutions of transient acceleration, in which the large-scale modification of gravity will drive the Universe to a new decelerated era in the future. We also show that a viable cosmological history with the usual matter-dominated era followed by an accelerati…
We revisit the gauge symmetry related to integrable projective transformations in metric-affine formalism, identifying the gauge field of the Weyl (conformal) symmetry as a dynamical component of the affine connection. In particular, we show how to include the local scaling symmetry as a gauge symmetry of a large class of geometric gravity theories, introducing a compensator dilaton field that naturally gives rise to a Stückelberg sector where a spontaneous breaking mechanism of the conformal symmetry is at work to generate a mass scale for the gauge field. For Ricci-based gravities that inclu…
We analyse a scalar field non-minimally coupled to gravity in the context of a Universe described by the flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (F-R-W) metric. The adopted model comprises a Universe filled by the scalar field and standard matter (dark and baryonic). The corresponding field equations are obtained through the Palatini formalism. From the action of the model in the flat F-R-W space-time, a point-like Lagrangian of first order is obtained and the Noether symmetry approach is applied to restrict the forms of the a priori undefined coupling and potential of the scalar field. We show that t…
We study the most general solution for affine connections that are compatible with the variational principle in the Palatini formalism for the Einstein-Hilbert action (with possible minimally coupled matter terms). We find that there is a family of solutions generalising the Levi-Civita connection, characterised by an arbitrary, non-dynamical vector field ${\cal A}_μ$. We discuss the mathematical properties and the physical implications of this family and argue that, although there is a clear mathematical difference between these new Palatini connections and the Levi-Civita one, both unparamet…
According to theoretical physics the cosmological constant (CC) is expected to be much larger in magnitude than other energy densities in the universe, which is in stark contrast to the observed Big Bang evolution. We address this old CC problem not by introducing an extremely fine-tuned counterterm, but in the context of modified gravity in the Palatini formalism. In our model the large CC term is filtered out, and it does not prevent a standard cosmological evolution. We discuss the filter effect in the epochs of radiation and matter domination as well as in the asymptotic de Sitter future. …
We make a systematic study of the cosmological dynamics for a number of f(R) gravity theories in Palatini formalism. We find a number of interesting results: (i) models based on theories of the type (a) f(R)=R-beta R^n and (b) f(R)=R+alpha ln R -beta, unlike the metric formalism, are capable of producing the sequence of radiation-dominated, matter-dominated and de-Sitter periods, and (ii) models based on theories of the type (c) f(R)=R+alpha R^m -beta R^n can produce early as well as late accelerating phases. However for the classes of models considered here, we have been unable to find the se…
We derive the gravitational energy-momentum pseudo-tensor $τ^μ_{\phantomμν}$ in both Palatini and metric approaches to $f(R)$ gravity. We then obtain the related cosmological gravitational energy density. Considering a flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker spacetime, the energy density complex of matter and gravitation vanishes in the metric approach, but results non-vanishing in the Palatini formalism. This feature could be relevant in order to physically discriminate between the two approaches.
