Using the bond fluctuation model we study polymer networks obtained by endlinking of symmetric 4-arm star polymers. We consider two types of systems. Solutions of one type (A) of star polymers and solution of two types (A,B) of star polymer where A-type polymers can only crosslink with B-type polymers. We find that network defects in $A$ networks are dominated by short dangling loops close to overlap concentration $c^{*}$. $AB$ networks develop a more perfect network structure, since loop sizes involving an odd number of stars are impossible, and thus, the most frequent dangling loop with largest impact on the phantom modulus is absent. The analysis of the pair-correlation and scattering function reveals that there is an amorphous packing of $A$ and $B$ type stars with a homogenization of $A$ and $B$ concentrations upon cross-linking at intermediate length scales in contrast to the previously suggested crystalline like order of $A$ and $B$ components at $c^{*}$. This result is corroborated by the coincidence of the probabilities of the shortest loop structures (which is impossible upon the previously suggested packing of stars) in both types of networks.
Furthermore, we derive the vector order parameters associated with the most frequent network structures based on the phantom model. In particular, for $AB$ networks we can show that there is a dominating cyclic defect with a clearly separated order parameter that could be used to analyze cyclic network defects.
Polymeric films with greater impact and ballistic resistance are highly desired for numerous applications, but molecular configurations that best address this need remain subject to debate. We study the resistance to ballistic impact of thin polymer films using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, investigating melts of linear polymer chains and star polymers with varying number 2<=f<=16 and degree of polymerization 10<=M<=50 of the arms. We show that increasing the number of arms f or the length of the arms M both result in greater specific penetration energy within the parameter ra…
We report on the linear viscoelastic properties of mixtures comprising multiarm star (as model soft colloids) and long linear chain homopolymers in a good solvent. In contrast to earlier works, we investigated symmetric mixtures (with a size ratio of 1) and showed that the polymeric and colloidal responses can be decoupled. The adopted experimental protocol involved probing the linear chain dynamics in different star environments. To this end, we studied mixtures with different star mass fraction, which was kept constant while linear chains were added and their entanglement plateau modulus ($G…
Comparing different coarse-grained potentials for star polymers
Understanding the dynamics of soft colloids, such as star polymers, dendrimers, and microgels, is of scientific and practical importance. It is known that the excluded volume effect plays a key role in colloidal dynamics. Here, we propose a condition of compressibility equivalence that provides a simple method to experimentally evaluate the excluded volume of soft colloids from a thermodynamic view. We apply this condition to survey the dynamics of a series of star polymer dispersions. It is found that as the concentration increases, the slowing of the long-time self-diffusivity of the star po…

We study conformations and dynamics of active star polymers. The analysis shows that active star polymers stretching behaviour is quite different from that of active linear chains. The visual inspection of conformations and bond-bond correlations reveal a better coordination for the alignment and coordination of bonds for the star polymers than for the linear counterparts. The architecture substantially affects the chain extension transition at high values of active force. The scaling laws for the shape factor and the arm asphericity ratio established for the passive star polymers coincide wit…
We experimentally measure the osmotic pressures of linear polymers and three-, four-, and eight-arm star polymers in a good solvent via membrane osmometry. These results reveal that the osmotic equations of state in the star polymer solutions are universally described by the same scaling function that describes linear polymer solutions. This universality is achieved by canceling increasing overlap concentrations and decreasing osmotic pressure, owing to the increased arm number. We further clarify the molar mass and arm number dependencies of the gyration radius and interpenetration factor, en…

Whereas it is experimentally known that the inclusion of nanoparticles in hydrogels can lead to a mechanical reinforcement, a detailed molecular understanding of the adhesion mechanism is still lacking. Here we use coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the nature of the interface between silica surfaces and solvated polymers. We show how differences in the nature of the polymer and the polymer--solvent interactions can lead to drastically different behavior of the polymer--surface adhesion. Comparing explicit and implicit solvent models, we conclude that this effect cann…
