The Rouse-Ham model is a simple yet useful dynamics model for an unentangled branched polymer. In this work, we study the normal modes of the Rouse-Ham type coarse-grained symmetric star polymer model. We model a star polymer by connecting multiple arm beads to a center bead by harmonic springs. In the Rouse-Ham model, the dynamics of the bead positions can be decomposed into the normal modes, which are chosen to be orthogonal to each other. Due to the existence of degenerate eigenvalues, the eigenmodes do not directly correspond to the normal modes. We propose several methods to construct the normal modes for the coarse-grained symmetric star polymer model. We show that we can construct the normal modes by using a simple permutation or the Hadamard matrix. These methods give symple and highly symmetric orthogonal modes, but work just for a special number of arms. We also show that we can construct the normal modes by using the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) matrix. This method is applicable for an arbitrary number of arms.
The dynamics of ring polymer melts are studied via molecular dynamics simulations of the Kremer-Grest bead-spring model. Rouse mode analysis is performed in comparison with linear polymers by changing the chain length. Rouse-like behavior is observed in ring polymers by quantifying the chain length dependence of the Rouse relaxation time, whereas a crossover from Rouse to reptation behavior is observed in linear polymers. Furthermore, the non-Gaussian parameters of the monomer bead displacement and chain center-of-mass displacement are analyzed. It is found that the non-Gaussianity of ring pol…
Contrary to some expectations, an experimental finding for a polymer that the solution intrinsic viscosity $[η]$ or the melt viscosity is linear in the polymer molecular weight $M$ does not indicate that polymer dynamics are Rouselike. Why? The other major polymer dynamic model, due to Kirkwood and Riseman [\emph{J. Chem.\ Phys.\ } \textbf{16}, 565-573 (1948)], leads in its free-draining form to a prediction $[η] \sim M$, even though the polymer motions in this model are totally unlike the polymer motions in the Rouse model. In the Rouse model, the chain motions are linear translation and inte…
Polymer Physics: Phenomenology of Polymeric Fluid Simulations is a review volume that I am writing. I anticipate it will take a while to complete, so I am supplying individual chapters when each is more-or-less completed. This Chapter considers collective coordinates and collective models for isolated polymer chains. Collective coordinates can be effective tools for isolating aspects of polymer motion that are less obvious if only the Cartesian coordinates of the individual atoms or monomers are viewed. I treat Fourier, Rouse, and Haar wavelets as suppliers of collective coordinates. One of th…
Effect of microstructures and interactions on segmental dynamics in polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution in water is probed with macro-scale oscillatory rheology and micro-scale diffusion of a fluorescent probe. PEG solution fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) curves have immobile fractions which increase with PEG concentration, for PEG volume fraction (c) > 0.2, indicating structuring. PEG solution micro-scale diffusion coefficients follow Rouse scaling D {\ alpha} c^(-0.54) for c < 0.8, resembling unentangled neutral polymers in good solvent. Addition of nanoclay bentonite (B) in…
We investigate conformations and dynamics of a polymer considering its monomers to be active Brownian particles. This active polymer shows very intriguing physical behavior which is absent in an active Rouse chain. The chain initially shrinks with active force, which starts swelling on further increase in force. The shrinkage followed by swelling is attributed purely to excluded-volume interactions among the monomers. In the swelling regime, chain shows a cross-over from the self-avoiding behavior to Rouse-behavior with scaling exponent $ν_a \simeq 1/2$ for end-to-end distance. The non-monoton…
We study the dynamics of a polymer, described as a variant of a Rouse chain, driven by an active terminal monomer (head). The local active force induces a transition from a globule-like to an elongated state, as revealed by the study of the end-to-end distance, whose variance is analytically predicted under suitable approximations. The change in the relaxation times of the Rouse-modes produced by the local self-propulsion is consistent with the transition from globule to elongated conformations. Moreover also the bond-bond spatial correlation for the chain head results to be affected and a gra…

Star polymers can exhibit a heterogeneous dynamical behavior due to their internal structure. In this work we employ atomistic molecular dynamics simulations to study translational motion in non-entangled polystyrene and poly(ethylene oxide) star-shaped melts. We focus on the local heterogeneous dynamics originating from the multi-arm star-like architecture and quantify the intramolecular dynamical gradient. By examining the translational motion at length scales of the order of the Kuhn length, we aim to find common features for both studied chemistries and to provide a critical and direct com…
The determination of the coil-globule transition of a polymer is generally based on the reconstruction of scaling laws, implying the need for samples from a rather wide range of different polymer lengths $N$. The spectral point of view developed in this work allows for a very parsimonious description of all the aspects of the finite-size coil-globule transition on the basis of the first two Rouse (cosine) modes only, shedding new light on polymer theory. Capturing the relevant configuration path features, the proposed approach enables to determine the state of a polymer without the need of any…
