We report on the linear viscoelastic properties of mixtures comprising multiarm star (as model soft colloids) and long linear chain homopolymers in a good solvent. In contrast to earlier works, we investigated symmetric mixtures (with a size ratio of 1) and showed that the polymeric and colloidal responses can be decoupled. The adopted experimental protocol involved probing the linear chain dynamics in different star environments. To this end, we studied mixtures with different star mass fraction, which was kept constant while linear chains were added and their entanglement plateau modulus ($G_p$) and terminal relaxation time ($τ_d$) were measured as functions of their concentration. Two distinct scaling regimes were observed for both $G_p$ and $τ_d$: at low linear polymer concentrations, a weak concentration dependence was observed, that became even weaker as the fraction of stars in the mixtures increased into the star glassy regime. On the other hand, at higher linear polymer concentrations, the classical entangled polymer scaling was recovered. Simple scaling arguments show that the threshold crossover concentration between the two regimes corresponds to the maximum osmotic star compression and signals the transition from confined to bulk dynamics. These results provide the needed ingredients to complete the state diagram of soft colloid-polymer mixtures and investigate their dynamics at large polymer-colloid size ratios. They also offer an alternative way to explore aspects of the colloidal glass transition and the polymer dynamics in confinement. Finally, they provide a new avenue to tailor the rheology of soft composites.
We present results from molecular dynamics simulations of a spherically confined neutral polymer in the presence of crowding agents, studying polymer shapes and conformations as a function of the confining potential, solvent quality and the density of crowders. The conformations of the polymer under good solvent conditions are largely independent of crowder density, even when the polymer is strongly confined. However, for poor solvents and attractive walls, the polymer shows a transition between an adsorbed extended state to a globular conformation on the surface as a function of crowder parti…
Nano-scale confinement of polymer in cone-shaped geometries occurs in many experimental situations. A flexible polymer confined in a cone-shaped nano-channel is studied theoretically and using molecular dynamics simulations. Distribution of the monomers inside the channel, configuration of the confined polymer, entropic force acting on the polymer, and their dependence on the channel and the polymer parameters are investigated. The theory and the simulation results are in very good agreement. The entropic force on the polymer that results from the asymmetric shape of the channel is measured in…
Equilibration of polymer melts containing highly entangled long polymer chains in confinement or with free surfaces is a challenge for computer simulations. We approach this problem by first studying polymer melts based on the soft-sphere coarse-grained model confined between two walls with periodic boundary conditions in two directions parallel to the walls. Then we apply backmapping to reinsert the microscopic details of the underlying bead-spring model. Tuning the strength of the wall potential, the monomer density of confined polymer melts in equilibrium is kept at the bulk density even ne…
The dynamics of polymer-nanoparticle (NP) mixtures, which involves multiple scales and system-specific variables, has posed a long-standing challenge on its theoretical description. In this paper, we construct a microscopic theory for polymer diffusion in the mixtures based on a combination of generalized Langevin equation, mode-coupling approach, and polymer physics ideas. The parameter-free theory has an explicit expression and remains tractable on pair correlation level with system-specific equilibrium structures as input. Taking a minimal polymer-NP mixture as an example, our theory correc…
We consider a fully directed self-avoiding walk model on a cubic lattice to mimic the conformations of an infinitely long confined flexible polymer chain; and the confinement condition is achieved by two parallel athermal plates. The confined polymer system is under good solvent condition and we revisit this problem to solve the real polymer's model for any length of chain and also for any separation in between the plates. The equilibrium statistics of the confined polymer chain is derived using an analytical calculations based on the generating function technique. The force of the confinement…
Depletion-induced interactions between colloids in colloid-polymer mixtures depend in range and strength on size, shape, and concentration of depletants. Crowding by colloids in turn affects shapes of polymer coils, such as biopolymers in biological cells. By simulating hard-sphere colloids and random-walk polymers, modeled as fluctuating ellipsoids, we compute depletion-induced potentials and polymer shape distributions. Comparing results with exact density-functional theory calculations, molecular simulations, and experiments, we show that polymer shape fluctuations play an important role in…
Experiments using nanofluidic devices have proven effective in characterizing the physical properties of polymers confined to small cavities. Two recent studies using such methods examined the organization and dynamics of two DNA molecules in box-like cavities with strong confinement in one direction and with square and elliptical cross sections in the lateral plane. Motivated by these experiments, we employ Monte Carlo and Brownian dynamics simulations to study the physical behaviour of two polymers confined to small cavities with shapes comparable to those used in the experiments. We quantif…
In drying liquid films of polymer-colloid mixtures, the stratification in which polymers are placed on top of larger colloids is studied. It is often presumed that the formation of segregated polymer-colloid layers is solely due to the proportion in size at fast evaporation as in binary colloid mixtures. By comparing experiments with a theoretical model, we found that the transition in viscosity near the drying interface was another important parameter for controlling the formation of stratified layers in polymer-colloid mixtures. At high evaporation rates, increased polymer concentrations nea…
Monte Carlo simulations are used to study the conformational properties of a folded semiflexible polymer confined to a long channel. We measure the variation in the conformational free energy with respect to the end-to-end distance of the polymer, and from these functions we extract the free energy of the hairpin fold, as well as the entropic force arising from interactions between the portions of the polymer that overlap along the channel. We consider the scaling of the free energies with respect to varying the persistence length of the polymer, as well as the channel dimensions for confineme…
Macromolecular crowding can influence polymer shapes, which is important for understanding the thermodynamic stability of polymer solutions and the structure and function of biopolymers (proteins, RNA, DNA) under confinement. We explore the influence of nanoparticle crowding on polymer shapes via Monte Carlo simulations and free-volume theory of a coarse-grained model of polymer-nanoparticle mixtures. Exploiting the geometry of random walks, we model polymer coils as effective penetrable ellipsoids, whose shapes fluctuate according to the probability distributions of the eigenvalues of the gyr…
We study the evaporation-induced stratification of a mixture of short and long polymer chains in a drying droplet using molecular simulations. We systematically investigate the effects of hydrodynamic interactions (HI) on this process by comparing hybrid simulations accounting for HI between polymers through the multiparticle collision dynamics technique with free-draining Langevin dynamics simulations neglecting the same. We find that the dried supraparticle morphologies are homogeneous when HI are included but are stratified in core--shell structures (with the short polymers forming the shel…
From studies via Molecular Dynamics simulations, we report results on structure and dynamics in mixtures of active colloids and passive polymers that are confined inside a spherical container with a repulsive boundary. Such systems mimic the presence of bacteria in the background of bio-polymers. All interactions in the fully passive case are chosen in such a way that in equilibrium coexistence between colloid-rich and polymer-rich phases occurs. For most part of the studies the chosen compositions give rise to Janus structure; one side of the sphere is occupied by the colloids and the rest by…
The paper presents a short overview of the theoretical, numerical and experimental works on the critical behavior of a dilute polymer solution of long-flexible polymer chains confined in semi-infinite space restricted by a surface or in a slit geometry of two parallel walls with different adsorbing or repelling properties in respect for polymers as well as in a solution of mesoscopic spherical colloidal particles of one sort or two different sorts. We discuss the application of the massive field theory approach in a fixed space dimensions d=3 up to one loop order for such topics as:(a) the inv…
The universal density-force relation is analyzed and the correspondent universal amplitude ratio $B_{real}$ is obtained using the massive field theory approach in fixed space dimensions d=3 up to one-loop order. The layer monomer density profiles of ideal chains and real polymer chains with excluded volume interaction in a good solvent between two parallel repulsive walls, one repulsive and one inert wall are obtained. Besides, taking into account the Derjaguin approximation the layer monomer density profiles for dilute polymer solution confined in semi-infinite space containing mesoscopic sph…
Understanding the phase behaviour of mixtures continues to pose challenges, even for systems that might be considered "simple". Here we consider a very simple mixture of two colloidal and one non-adsorbing polymer species which can be simplified even further to a size-asymmetrical binary mixture, in which the effective colloid-colloid interactions depend on the polymer concentration. We show that this basic system exhibits surprisingly rich phase behaviour. In particular, we enquire whether such a system features only a liquid-vapor phase separation (as in one-component colloid-polymer mixture…
We present the results from dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations of phase separation dynamics in ternary (ABC) fluids mixture in $d=3$ where components A and B represent the simple fluids and component C represents a polymeric fluid. Here, we study the role of polymeric fluid (C) on domain morphology by varying composition ratio, polymer chain length, and polymer stiffness. We observe that the system under consideration lies in the same dynamical universality class as a simple ternary fluids mixture. However, the scaling functions depend upon the parameters mentioned above as they c…
The formation of (bio)molecular condensates via liquid-liquid phase separation in cells has received increasing attention, as these coacervates play important functional and regulatory roles within biological systems. However, the majority of studies focused on the behavior of pure systems in bulk solutions, thus neglecting confinement effects and the interplay between the numerous molecules present in cells. To advance our knowledge, we perform simulations of binary polymer mixtures in droplets, considering both monodisperse and polydisperse molecular weight distributions for the longer polym…
Depletion forces and macromolecular crowding govern the structure and function of biopolymers in biological cells and the properties of polymer nanocomposite materials. To isolate and analyze the influence of polymer shape fluctuations and penetrability on depletion-induced interactions and crowding by nanoparticles, we model polymers as effective penetrable ellipsoids, whose shapes fluctuate according to the probability distributions of the eigenvalues of the gyration tensor of an ideal random walk. Within this model, we apply Monte Carlo simulation methods to compute the depletion-induced po…
We show that the problem of describing the conformations of a semiflexible polymer confined to a channel can be mapped onto an exactly solvable model in the so-called extended de Gennes regime. This regime (where the polymer is neither weakly nor strongly confined) has recently been studied intensively experimentally and by means of computer simulations. The exact solution predicts precisely how the conformational fluctuations depend upon the channel width and upon the microscopic parameters characterising the physical properties of the polymer.
Smart polymers are a modern class of polymeric materials that often exhibit unpredictable behavior in mixtures of solvents. One such phenomenon is co-non-solvency. Co-non-solvency occurs when two (perfectly) miscible and competing good solvents, for a given polymer, are mixed together. As a result, the same polymer collapses into a compact globule within intermediate mixing ratios. More interestingly, polymer collapses when the solvent quality remains good and even gets increasingly better by the addition of the better cosolvent. This is a puzzling phenomenon that is driven by strong local con…
We study the motion of dispersed nanoprobes in entangled active-passive polymer mixtures. By comparing the two architectures of linear vs. unconcatenated and unknotted circular polymers, we demonstrate that novel, rich physics emerge. For both polymer architectures, nanoprobes of size smaller than the entanglement threshold of the solution move faster as activity is increased and more energy is pumped in the system. For larger nanoprobes, a surprising phenomenon occurs: while in linear solutions they move qualitatively as before, in active-passive ring solutions nanoprobes {\it decelerate} wit…
