The three-dimensional (3D) electronic structure of the hidden order compound URu$_2$Si$_2$ in a paramagnetic phase was revealed using a 3D angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy where the electronic structure of the entire Brillouin zone is obtained by scanning both incident photon energy and detection angles of photoelectrons. The quasi-particle bands with enhanced contribution from the $\mathrm{U}~5f$ state were observed near $E_\mathrm{F}$, formed by the hybridization with the $\mathrm{Ru}~4d$ states. The energy dispersion of the quasi-particle band is significantly depend on $k_z$, indicating that they inherently have a 3D nature. The band-structure calculation qualitatively explain the characteristic features of the band structure and Fermi surface although the electron correlation effect strongly renormalizes the quasi-particle bands. The 3D and strongly-correlated nature of the quasi-particle bands in URu$_2$Si$_2$ is an essential ingredient for modeling its hidden-order transition.
The electronic structure of ThRu2Si2 was studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) with incident photon energies of hn=655-745 eV. Detailed band structure and the three-dimensional shapes of Fermi surfaces were derived experimentally, and their characteristic features were mostly explained by means of band structure calculations based on the density functional theory. Comparison of the experimental ARPES spectra of ThRu2Si2 with those of URu2Si2 shows that they have considerably different spectral profiles particularly in the energy range of 1 eV from the Fermi level, sugges…
We report low-energy inelastic neutron scattering data of the paramagnetic (PM) to hidden-order (HO) phase transition at $T_0=17.5\,{\rm K}$ in URu$_2$Si$_2$. While confirming previous results for the HO and PM phases, our data reveal a pronounced wavevector dependence of low-energy excitations across the phase transition. To analyze the energy scans we employ a damped harmonic oscillator model containing a fit parameter $1/Γ$ which is expected to diverge at a second-order phase transition. Counter to expectations the excitations at $\vec{Q}_1=(1.44,0,0)$ show an abrupt step-like suppression o…
Motivated by experiment, we review the case for phase inhomogeneity in URu_2Si_2. In this scenario, the paramagnetic hidden order phase coexists with small distinct domains of antiferromagnetism whose volume fraction increases with pressure. The implications for the nature of the hidden order are discu ssed.
We report $^{29}$Si NMR measurements in single crystals and aligned powders of URu$_2$Si$_2$ in the hidden order and paramagnetic phases. The spin-lattice-relaxation data reveal evidence of pseudospin fluctuations of U moments in the paramagnetic phase. We find evidence for partial suppression of the density of states below 30 K, and analyze the data in terms of a two component spin-fermion model. We propose that this behavior is a realization of a pseudogap between the hidden order transition $T_{HO}$ and 30 K. This behavior is then compared to other materials that demonstrate precursor fluct…
X-ray diffraction experiments under pressure in a diamond anvil cell have been performed to gauge any response of the crystalline lattice of URu2Si2 to the "hidden order" or antiferromagnetic transitions, the latter of which is accessible only with applied pressure. The ambient-pressure crystal structure of URu2Si2 persists to high pressure, and structural characterization reveals a reasonably robust crystal lattice with respect to both of the aforementioned temperature-induced electronic transitions. Coupling between the lattice and the "hidden order" transition is reconfirmed to be subtle, a…
High-energy-resolution core-level and valence-band photoelectron spectroscopic studies were performed for the heavy Fermion uranium compounds UGe2, UCoGe, URhGe, URu2Si2, UNi2Al3, UPd2Al3, and UPt3 as well as typical localized and itinerant uranium compounds to understand the relationship between the uranium valence state and their core-level spectral line shapes. In addition to the main line and high-binding energy satellite structure recognized in the core-level spectra of uranium compounds, a shoulder structure on the lower binding energy side of the main lines of localized and nearly local…
We experimentally investigate the symmetry in the Hidden Order (HO) phase of intermetallic URu2Si2 by mapping the lattice and magnetic excitations via inelastic neutron and x-ray scattering measurements in the HO and high-temperature paramagnetic phases. At all temperatures the excitations respect the zone edges of the body-centered tetragonal paramagnetic phase, showing no signs of reduced spatial symmetry, even in the HO phase. The magnetic excitations originate from transitions between hybridized bands and track the Fermi surface, whose feature are corroborated by the phonon measurements. D…
Simultaneous neutron-scattering and thermal expansion measurements on the heavy-fermion superconductor URu2Si2 under hydrostatic pressure of 0.67 GPa have been performed in order to detect the successive paramagnetic, hidden order, and large moment antiferromagnetic phases on cooling. The temperature dependence of the sharp low energy excitation at the wavevector Q_0=(100) shows that this excitation is clearly a signature of the hidden order state. In the antiferromagnetic phase, this collective mode disappears. The higher energy excitation at the incommensurate wavevector Q_1=(1.4,0,0) persis…
The application of pressure as well as the successive substitution of Ru with Fe in the hidden order (HO) compound URu$_2$Si$_2$ leads to the formation of the large moment antiferromagnetic phase (LMAFM). Here we have investigated the substitution series URu$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Si$_2$ with $x$ = 0.2 and 0.3 with non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NIXS) and 4$f$ core-level photoelectron spectroscopy with hard x-rays (HAXPES). NIXS shows that the substitution of Fe has no impact on the symmetry of the ground-state wave function. In HAXPES we find no shift of spectral weight that would be indicati…
To identify the superconducting gap structure in URu2Si2 we perform field-angle-dependent specific heat measurements for the two principal orientations in addition to field rotations, and theoretical analysis based on microscopic calculations. The Sommerfeld coefficient γ(H)'s in the mixed state exhibit distinctively different field-dependence. This comes from point nodes and substantial Pauli paramagnetic effect of URu2Si2. These two features combined give rise to a consistent picture of superconducting properties, including a possible first order transition of Hc2 at low temperatures.
We study, using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, the evolution of the electronic structure in URu2Si2 at the Gamma, Z and X high-symmetry points from the high-temperature Kondo-screened regime to the low-temperature `hidden-order' (HO) state. At all temperatures and symmetry points, we find structures resulting from the interaction between heavy and light bands, related to the Kondo lattice formation. At the X point, we directly measure a hybridization gap of 11 meV already open at temperatures above the ordered phase. Strikingly, we find that while the HO induces pro…
Electrical resistivity measurements were performed on single crystals of URu$_2-x$Os$_x$Si$_2$ up to $x$ = 0.28 under hydrostatic pressure up to $P$ = 2 GPa. As the Os concentration, $x$ , is increased, (1) the lattice expands, creating an effective negative chemical pressure $P_{ch}$($x$), (2) the hidden order (HO) phase is enhanced and the system is driven toward a large-moment antiferromagnetic (LMAFM) phase, and (3) less external pressure $P_{c}$ is required to induce the HO to LMAFM phase transition. We compare the $T(x)$, $T(P)$ phase behavior reported here for the URu$_2-x$Os$_x$Si$_2$ …
Thermal expansion, electrical resistivity, magnetization, and specific heat measurements were performed on URu$_{2-x}$Fe$_{x}$Si$_{2}$ single crystals for various values of the Fe concentration $x$ in both the hidden order (HO) and large moment antiferromagnetic (LMAFM) regions of the phase diagram. Our results show that the paramagnetic (PM) to HO and LMAFM phase transitions are manifested differently in the thermal expansion coefficient. For Fe concentrations near the boundary between the HO and LMAFM phases at $x_c$ ~ 0.1, we observe two features in the thermal expansion upon cooling, one t…
We develop a phenomenological mean field theory describing the hidden order phase in URu$_{\text2}$Si$_{\text2}$ as a nematic of the $\text B_{\text{1g}}$ representation staggered along the $c$-axis. Several experimental features are reproduced by this theory: the topology of the temperature--pressure phase diagram, the response of the elastic modulus $(C_{11}-C_{12})/2$ above the transition at ambient pressure, and orthorhombic symmetry breaking in the high-pressure antiferromagnetic phase. In this scenario, hidden order is characterized by broken rotational symmetry that is modulated along t…
Soft and hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) has been performed for one of the heavy fermion system CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ and a $4f$-localized ferromagnet CeRu$_2$Ge$_2$ in the paramagnetic phase. The three-dimensional band structures and Fermi surface (FS) shapes of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ have been determined by soft X-ray $hν$-dependent angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). The differences in the Fermi surface topology and the non-$4f$ electronic structures between CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ and CeRu$_2$Ge$_2$ are qualitatively explained by the band-structure calculation for both $4f$ itinerant an…
By means of neutron scattering we show that the high-temperature precursor to the hidden order state of the heavy fermion superconductor URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ exhibits heavily damped incommensurate paramagnons whose strong energy dispersion is very similar to that of the long-lived longitudinal f-spin excitations that appear below T$_{0}$. Since the underlying local f-exchange is preserved we expect only the f-d interactions to change across the phase transition and to cause the paramagnetic damping. The damping exhibits single-ion behavior independent of wave vector and vanishes below the hidden …
The electronic structure of the antiferromagnet uranium nitride (UN) has been studied by angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy using soft X-rays (hn=420-520 eV). Strongly dispersive bands with large contributions from the U 5f states were observed in ARPES spectra, and form Fermi surfaces. The band structure as well as the Fermi surfaces in the paramagnetic phase are well explained by the band-structure calculation treating all the U 5f electrons as being itinerant, suggesting that itinerant description of the U 5f states is appropriate for this compound. On the other hand, changes in the …
Time reversal symmetry and magnetoelastic correlations are probed by means of high-resolution volume dilatometry in URu2Si2 at cryogenic temperatures and magnetic fields more than enough to suppress the hidden order state at H_HO(T = 0.66 K) approximately 35 T. We report a significant crystal lattice volume expansion at and above H_HO(T), and even above T_HO, possibly a consequence of field-induced f-electron localization, and hysteresis at some high field phase boundaries that confirm volume involvement. We investigate in detail the magnetostriction and magnetization as the temperature is red…
The electronic structure of the ferromagnetic superconductor URhGe in the paramagnetic phase has been studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy using soft x rays (hn=595-700 eV). Dispersive bands with large contributions from U 5f states were observed in the ARPES spectra, and form Fermi surfaces. The band structure in the paramagnetic phase is partly explained by the band-structure calculation treating all U 5f electrons as being itinerant, suggesting that an itinerant description of U 5f states is a good starting point for this compound. On the other hand, there are qualitative di…
We report a comprehensive electronic structure investigation of the paramagnetic (PM), the large moment antiferromagnetic (LMAF), and the hidden order (HO) phases of URu$_2$Si$_2$. We have performed relativistic full-potential calculations on the basis of the density functional theory (DFT), employing different exchange-correlation functionals to treat electron correlations within the open $5f$-shell of uranium. Specifically, we investigate---through a comparison between calculated and low-temperature experimental properties---whether the $5f$ electrons are localized or delocalized in URu$_2$S…
We investigate quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in URu$_{2-x}$Fe$_{x}$Si$_{2}$ single crystals using ultrafast optical-pump optical-probe (OPOP) spectroscopy as a function of temperature ($T$) and Fe substitution ($x$), crossing from the hidden order (HO) phase ($x$ = 0) to the large moment antiferromagnet (LMAFM) phase ($x$ = 0.12). At low $T$, the dynamics for $x$ = 0 and $x$ = 0.12 are consistent with the low energy electronic structure of the HO and LMAFM phases that emerge from the high $T$ paramagnetic (PM) phase. In contrast, for $x$ = 0.1, two transitions occur over a narrow $T$ range…
The thermodynamics of the antiferromagnetic ordering transition in NiO and the photoelectron spectra in the antiferromagnetic phase are studied by the Variational Cluster Approximation. Using realistic Racah parameters to describe the Coulomb interaction in the Ni 3d shell and a Slater-Koster parameter pds which is slightly (10%) increased over the band structure estimate the calculated Neel temperature is 481 Kelvin (experimental value: 523 Kelvin). The magnetic susceptibility above TN has Curie-Weiss form. A significant contribution to the stabilization of the antiferromagnetic phase comes f…
The electronic structures of the ferromagnetic superconductors $\mathrm{UGe}_2$ and $\mathrm{UCoGe}$ in the paramagnetic phase were studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy using soft X-rays ($hν=400-500$). The quasi-particle bands with large contributions from $\mathrm{U}~5f$ states were observed in the vicinity of $E_\mathrm{F}$, suggesting that the $\mathrm{U}~5f$ electrons of these compounds have an itinerant character. Their overall band structures were explained by the band-structure calculations treating all the $\mathrm{U}~5f$ electrons as being itinerant. Meanwhile, the st…
We describe here recent inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the heavy fermion compound URu2Si2 realized in order to clarify the nature of the hidden order (HO) phase which occurs below T_0 = 17.5 K at ambient pressure. The choice was to measure at a given pressure P where the system will go, by lowering the temperature, successively from paramagnetic (PM) to HO and then to antiferromagnetic phase (AF). Furthermore, in order to verify the selection of the pressure, a macroscopic detection of the phase transitions was also achieved in situ via its thermal expansion response detected by a…
The electronic structures of UX$_3$ (X=Al, Ga, and In) were studied by photoelectron spectroscopy to understand the relationship between their electronic structures and magnetic properties. The band structures and Fermi surfaces of UAl$_3$ and UGa$_3$ were revealed experimentally by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), and they were compared with the result of band-structure calculations. The topologies of the Fermi surfaces and the band structures of UAl$_3$ and UGa$_3$ were explained reasonably well by the calculation, although bands near the Fermi level ($E_\mathrm{F}$) were r…
In the present report, we investigate various properties of the Nb2PdS5 superconductor. Scanning electron microscopy displayed slabs like laminar growth of Nb2PdS5while X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy exhibited the hybridization of Sulphur (2p) with both Palladium (3d)and Niobium (3d). High field (140kOe) magneto-transport measurements revealed that superconductivity (Tc onset =7K and Tc R = 0 = 6.2K) of the studied Nb2PdS5material is quite robust against magnetic field with the upper critical field (Hc2) outside the Pauli paramagnetic limit. Thermally activated flux flow (TAFF) of the compou…
In this paper we introduce an exactly solvable Kondo lattice model without any fine-tuning local gauge symmetry. This model describes itinerant electrons interplaying with a localized magnetic moment via only longitudinal Kondo exchange. Its solvability results from conservation of the localized moment at each site, and is valid for arbitrary lattice geometry and electron filling. A case study on square lattice shows that the ground state is a Néel antiferromagnetic insulator at half-filling. At finite temperature, paramagnetic phases including a Mott insulator and correlated metal are found. …
We investigate with angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy the change of the Fermi Surface (FS) and the main bands from the paramagnetic (PM) state to the antiferromagnetic (AFM) occurring below 72 K in Fe_{1.06}Te. The evolution is completely different from that observed in iron-pnictides as nesting is absent. The AFM state is a rather good metal, in agreement with our magnetic band structure calculation. On the other hand, the PM state is very anomalous with a large pseudogap on the electron pocket that closes in the AFM state. We discuss this behavior in connection with spin fluctuations…
Using inelastic x-ray scattering beyond the dipole limit and hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy we establish the dual nature of the U $5f$ electrons in UM$_2$Si$_2$ (M = Pd, Ni, Ru, Fe), regardless of their degree of delocalization. We have observed that the compounds have in common a local atomic-like state that is well described by the U $5f^2$ configuration with the $Γ_1^{(1)}$ and $Γ_2$ quasi-doublet symmetry. The amount of the U 5$f^3$ configuration, however, varies considerably across the UM$_2$Si$_2$ series, indicating an increase of U5$f$ itineracy in going from M=Pd to Ni to Ru, an…
