The cosmology of a standard model (SM) gauge singlet complex scalar dark matter (DM), stabilized by a reflection symmetry, is studied including all renormalizable interactions that preserve the reflection symmetry but can break the larger global U(1) symmetry of DM number. We find an interesting interplay of the ensuing DM self-scatterings and annihilations in generating the present DM density, and possible particle-antiparticle asymmetry in the DM sector. The role of DM self-scatterings in determining its present density and composition is a novel phenomenon. The simultaneous presence of the self-scatterings and annihilations is required to obtain a non-zero asymmetry, which otherwise vanishes due to unitarity sum rules.
Cosmic microwave background (CMB) constraints on dark matter annihilation are a uniquely powerful tool in the quest to understand the nature of dark matter. Annihilation of dark matter to Standard Model particles between recombination and reionization heats baryons, ionizes neutral hydrogen, and alters the CMB visibility function. Surprisingly, CMB bounds on dark matter annihilation are not expected to improve significantly with the dramatic improvements in sensitivity expected in future cosmological surveys. In this paper, we will present a simple physical description of the origin of the CMB…
We study the fluctuations in the brightness temperature of 21-cm signal $δT_{21}$ at the dark ages ($z\sim100$) with a dark matter candidate in Inter Doublet Model (IDM). We then explore the effects of different fractions of IDM dark matter on $δT_{21}$ signal. The IDM dark matter masses are chosen in few tens of GeV region as well as in the high mass region beyond 500 GeV. It has been observed that the $δT_{21}$ signal is more sensitive in the dark matter mass range of $70 - 80$ GeV. A lower bound on annihilation cross-section for this dark matter is also obtained analyzing the $δT_{21}$ sign…
As hints of physics beyond the standard model become the major driving force behind future large-scale projects, it is increasingly important to consider all sources of evidence and constraints. Here, I illustrate the importance of considering the connection between particle physics, cosmology and astrophysics, mainly via two examples: 1) the sterile neutrino and its impact on cosmology, and 2) the 511 keV line from electron-positron annihilation in the galactic centre.
We re-examine the stop co-annihilation scenario of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, wherein a bino-like lightest supersymmetric particle has a thermal relic density set by co-annihilations with a scalar partner of the top quark in the early universe. We concentrate on the case where only the top partner sector is relevant for the cosmology, and other particles are heavy. We discuss the cosmology with focus on low energy parameters and an emphasis on the implications of the measured Higgs boson mass and its properties. We find that the irreducible direct detection signal correlated wi…
In the framework of the scotogenic model, which features radiative generation of neutrino masses, we explore light dark matter scenario. Throughout the paper we chiefly focus on keV-scale dark matter which can be produced either via freeze-in through the decays of the new scalars, or from the decays of next-to-lightest fermionic particle in the spectrum, which is produced through freeze-out. The latter mechanism is required to be suppressed as it typically produces a hot dark matter component. Constraints from BBN are also considered and in combination with the former production mechanism they…
The generic expectation in string/supergravity models is that there are multiple moduli fields with masses of the order of the supersymmetry breaking scale. We study the cosmology that arises as a result of vacuum misalignment of these moduli fields (in contrast to previous studies which mostly focussed on the single modulus case). We show that the dark radiation produced from the heavier moduli undergoes significant dilution. This happens even if there is a small splitting between the masses of the lightest and the heavier moduli. On the other hand, in the absence of fast annihilation process…
In $\rmΛ$CDM cosmology, Dark Matter (DM) and neutrinos are assumed to be non-interacting. However, it is possible to have scenarios, where DM-neutrino interaction may be present, leading to scattering of DM with neutrinos and annihilation of DM into neutrinos. We investigate the viability of such scenarios in the light of cosmological data by making use of the Planck 2018 dataset (high-l TT+TE+EE, low-l TT, low-l EE) and constrain these processes in the light of the same. We also discuss a viable particle DM model where DM-neutrino interaction is present, and map the constraints obtained to th…
The discrepancy in measurements of the Hubble constant indicates new physics in dark energy, dark matter, or both. Drawing inspiration from string theory, we explore possible solutions to overcome the $H_0$ problem. We investigate the interplay between the cosmological determination of $ΔN_{\rm eff}{}$ and $Z'{}$ searches at the LHC Run3.

We study transition rates and cross sections from first principles in a spatially flat radiation dominated cosmology. We consider a model of scalar particles to study scattering and heavy particle production from pair annihilation, drawing more general conclusions. The S-matrix formulation is ill suited to study these ubiquitous processes in a rapidly expanding cosmology. We introduce a physically motivated adiabatic expansion that relies on wavelengths much smaller than the particle horizon at a given time. The leading order in this expansion dominates the transition rates and cross sections.…
We investigate a novel interplay between the decay and annihilation of a particle whose mass undergoes a large shift during a first order phase transition, leading to the particles becoming trapped in the false vacuum and enhancing their annihilation rates as the bubbles of true vacuum expand. This opens up a large region of the parameter space where annihilations can be important. We apply this scenario to baryogenesis, where we find that annihilations can be enhanced enough to generate the requires baryon asymmetry even for relatively tiny annihilation cross sections with modest CP asymmetri…
Dark matter models can give rise to specific signatures at particle physics experiments or in cosmology. The details of the cosmological history can also influence the new physics signals to be expected at e.g. collider experiments. In these proceedings, we briefly summarize the case of dark matter weakly to feebly coupled to Standard Model fermions through t-channel portal dividing the discussion into three main regimes. We also underline the interplay between cosmology and particle physics.
Axion-like particles (ALPs), a compelling candidate for dark matter (DM), are the pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons of a spontaneously and explicitly broken global $U(1)$ symmetry. When the symmetry breaking happens after inflation, the ALP cosmology predicts the formation of a string-wall network which must annihilate early enough, producing gravitational waves (GWs) and primordial black holes (PBHs), as well as non-relativistic ALPs. We call this process catastrogenesis. We show that, under the generic assumption that the potential has several degenerate minima, GWs from string-wall annihilation…
In this paper, we analyze the cosmological evolution, allowed parameter space, and observational prospects for a dark sector consisting of thermally produced pseudo-Dirac fermions with a small mass splitting, coupled to the Standard Model through a dark photon. This scenario is particularly notable in the context of sub-GeV dark matter, where the mass-off-diagonal leading interaction limits applicability of both CMB energy injection constraints and standard direct detection searches. We present the first general study of the thermal history of pseudo-Dirac DM with splittings from 100 eV to MeV…
We consider a singlet Dirac fermion with Peccei-Quinn(PQ) symmetry as dark matter. A singlet complex scalar is introduced to mediate between dark matter and the SM through Higgs portal interaction and electroweak PQ anomalies. We show that a resonant annihilation of dark matter with axion mediation can explain the monochromatic photon line of the Fermi LAT data at 130 GeV by anomaly interactions while the annihilation cross section with Higgs portal interaction is p-wave suppressed. We discuss the interplay between the direct detection of the fermion dark matter and the collider search of Higg…
The core-cusp problem persists as an unresolved tension between the predictions of $Λ$CDM cosmology and observations of dark matter (DM) profiles in dwarf spheroidal and other galaxies. We present a novel scenario for converting cusps into cores through reactivation of DM annihilation in galaxies at late times. This can happen in asymmetric DM models when there is a very small DM-number violating mass term that causes oscillations between DM and its antiparticle. Using analytic methods as well as gravitational N-body simulations, we show that this mechanism can robustly eliminate cusps from ga…
We are at the dawn of a data-driven era in astrophysics and cosmology. A large number of ongoing and forthcoming experiments combined with an increasingly open approach to data availability offer great potential in unlocking some of the deepest mysteries of the Universe. Among these is understanding the nature of dark matter (DM)---one of the major unsolved problems in particle physics. Characterizing DM through its astrophysical signatures will require a robust understanding of its distribution in the sky and the use of novel statistical methods. The first part of this thesis describes the im…
We study how the evaporation of primordial black holes (PBHs) can affect the production of dark matter (DM) particles through thermal processes. We consider fermionic DM interacting with Standard Model particles via a spin-1 mediator in the context of a Freeze-Out or Freeze-In mechanism. We show that when PBHs evaporate after dominating the Universe's energy density, PBHs act as a source of DM and continuously inject entropy into the visible sector that can affect the thermal production in three qualitatively different ways. We compute the annihilation cross-sections which account for the inte…
