We find the phase diagram of solutions of the charged black hole bomb system. In particular, we find the static hairy black holes of Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar theory confined in a Minkowski box. We impose boundary conditions such that the scalar field vanishes at and outside a cavity of constant radius. These hairy black holes are asymptotically flat with a scalar condensate floating above the horizon. We identify four critical scalar charges which mark significant changes in the qualitative features of the phase diagram. When they coexist, hairy black holes always have higher entropy than the Reissner-Nordström black hole with the same quasilocal mass and charge. So hairy black holes are natural candidates for the endpoint of the superradiant/near-horizon instabilities of the black hole bomb system. We also relate hairy black holes to the boson stars of the theory. When it has a zero horizon radius limit, the hairy black hole family terminates on the boson star family. Finally, we find the Israel surface tensor of the box required to confine the scalar condensate and that it can obey suitable energy conditions.
Press and Teukolsky famously introduced the concept of a black hole bomb system: a scalar field scattering a Kerr black hole confined inside a mirror undergoes superradiant amplification that keeps repeating due to the reflecting boundary conditions at the mirror. A similar charged black hole bomb system exists if we have a charged scalar field propagating in a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole confined inside a box. We point out that scalar fields propagating in such a background are unstable not only to superradiance but also to a mechanism known as the near-horizon scalar condensation instabili…
The well-known superradiant amplification mechanism allows a charged scalar field of proper mass $μ$ and electric charge $q$ to extract the Coulomb energy of a charged Reissner-Nordström black hole. The rate of energy extraction can grow exponentially in time if the system is placed inside a reflecting cavity which prevents the charged scalar field from escaping to infinity. This composed black-hole-charged-scalar-field-mirror system is known as the {\it charged black-hole bomb}. Previous numerical studies of this composed physical system have shown that, in the linearized regime, the inequali…
The superradiant stability of higher dimensional non-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole under charged massive scalar perturbation is analytically studied. We extend our previous studies of four- and five-dimensional non-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole cases to six-dimensional case. By analyzing the derivative of the effective potential with an analytical method, we find that no potential well exists outside the outer horizon of the black hole for the superradiant scalar modes. This means that there is no black hole bomb for the system consisting of six-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom…
The superradiant stability of asymptotically flat D-dimensional extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black holes under charged massive scalar perturbation is analytically studied. Recently, an analytical method has been proposed by the author and used to prove that five and six-dimensional extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black holes are superradiantly stable under charged massive scalar perturbation. We apply this analytical method in the D-dimensional extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole cases and prove that the D-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom black holes are all superradiantly stable under charged mas…
A charged scalar field impinging upon a charged Reissner-Nordstrom black hole can be amplified as it scatters off the hole, a phenomenon known as superradiant scattering. This scattering process in the superradiant regime w<qQ/r_+ (here w, q, Q, and r_{+-} are the conserved frequency of the wave, the charge coupling constant of the field, the electric charge of the black hole, and the horizon radii of the black hole, respectively) results in the extraction of Coulomb energy and electric charge from the charged black hole. The black-hole-field system can be made unstable by placing a reflecting…

The fundamental role played by black holes in many areas of physics makes it highly important to explore the nature of their stability. The stability of charged Reissner-Nordström black holes to {\it neutral} (gravitational and electromagnetic) perturbations was established almost four decades ago. However, the stability of these charged black holes under {\it charged} perturbations has remained an open question due to the complexity introduced by the well-known phenomena of superradiant scattering: A charged scalar field impinging on a charged Reissner-Nordström black hole can be {\it amplifi…
Similar to the superradiant effect in Reissner-Nordström black hole, a charged scalar field can be amplified when impinging on the charged black hole in string theory. According to the black-hole bomb mechanism, the mass term of the incident field can works as the reflecting mirror, which may trigger the instability of black hole. We study the possible instability triggered by superradiant effect and demonstrate that the charged black hole in string theory is stable against the massive charged scalar perturbation. The reason is that there is no trapping potential well in the black hole exterior…
We consider the decay of a particle with some energy $E_{0}>0$ inside the ergosphere of a black hole. After the first decay one of particles with the energy $E_{1}<0$ falls towards a black hole while the second one with $% E_{2}>E_{0}\,\ $moves in the outward direction. It bounces back from a reflecting shell and, afterwards, the process repeats. For radial motion of charged particles in the Reissner-Nordstöm metric, the result depends strongly on a concrete scenario. In particular, an indefinitely large growth of energy inside a shell is possible that gives rise to a black-hole bomb. We also …
Compact boson stars, whose scalar field vanishes identically in the exterior region, arise in a theory involving a {\it massless} complex scalar field with a conical potential, when coupled to gravity. Their charged compact generalizations, obtained in the presence of a U(1) gauge field, exhibit further interesting features. On the one hand, charged compact boson shells can arise, whose scalar field vanishes also in the central region, while on the other hand, the domain of existence of charged compact boson stars exhibits bifurcation points. First 2D phase diagrams have been studied before. H…
We study the triple points and phase diagrams in the extended phase space of the charged Gauss-Bonnet black holes in $d$-dimensional anti-de Sitter space, where the cosmological constant appears as a dynamical pressure of the system and its conjugate quantity is the thermodynamic volume of the black holes. Employing the equation of state $T=T(v, P)$, we demonstrate that the information of the phase transition and behavior of the Gibbs free energy are potential encoded in the $T-v$ ($T-r_{h}$) line with fixed pressure $P$. We get the phase diagrams for the charged Gauss-Bonnet black holes with …
In this work we present some new results obtained in a study of the phase diagram of charged compact boson stars in a theory involving a complex scalar field with a conical potential coupled to a U(1) gauge field and gravity. We here obtain new bifurcation points in this model. We present a detailed discussion of the various regions of the phase diagram with respect to the bifurcation points. The theory is seen to contain rich physics in a particular domain of the phase diagram.
We study the Gregory-Laflamme instability of 5D compactified, electrically charged black strings. We consider static, linear perturbations of these solutions and derive master equation for these perturbations. Using numerical analysis we search for the threshold unstable modes and derive the critical wave-length. The results are illustrated in the black string mass v.s. electric charge phase diagram. Similar diagram is constructed using global thermodynamic equilibrium argument applied to the charged string and 5D electrically charged black hole. The results derived illustrate that electric ch…
A Reissner-Nordström black hole (BH) is superradiantly unstable against spherical perturbations of a charged scalar field, enclosed in a cavity, with frequency lower than a critical value. We use numerical relativity techniques to follow the development of this unstable system -- dubbed a charged BH bomb -- into the non-linear regime, solving the full Einstein--Maxwell--Klein-Gordon equations, in spherical symmetry. We show that: $i)$ the process stops before all the charge is extracted from the BH; $ii)$ the system settles down into a hairy BH: a charged horizon in equilibrium with a scalar f…
In this article, the behaviour of a charged and massive scalar field around a global monopole swallowed by a Reissner-Nordström-Anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS) black hole is investigated by considering the Klein-Gordon equation in this geometry. The superradiance phenomenon and instability behaviour of the black hole against charged scalar perturbations are studied for both an RN-AdS case and also for an RN black hole surrounded by a reflective mirror, i.e., the black hole bomb case. The effects of the monopole on these cases are discussed analytically and also with the help of several graphs in detai…
This article is based on a talk given at the IInd International Colloquium on Modern Quantum Field Theory, Bombay 1994. The Ernst solution of dilaton gravity describes charged black holes undergoing uniform accleration in a background magnetic field. By analytically continuing the Ernst solution one obtains instantons that describe the pair production of black holes in the background field. We review various aspects of these solutions paying special attention to the Einstein-Maxwell, low-energy string and $d=5$ Kaluza-Klein theories. It is based on work done in collaboration with {}F. Dowker, …
We numerically construct charged boson stars in asymptotically AdS spacetime. We find an intricate phase diagram dominated by solutions whose main matter contribution are alternately provided by the scalar field or by the gauge field.
In this paper we discuss phase transition of the charged topological dilaton AdS black holes by Maxwell equal area law. The two phases involved in the phase transition could be coexist and we depict the coexistence region in $P-v$ diagrams. The two-phase equilibrium curves in $P-T$ diagrams are plotted, the Clapeyron equation for the black hole is derived, and the latent heat of isothermal phase transition is investigated. We also analyze of the parameters of the black hole that have an effect on the two phases coexistence. The results show that the black hole may go through a small-large phas…
We construct exact, time-dependent, black hole solutions of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with arbitrary dilaton coupling, $a$. For $a=1$ this theory arises as the four-dimensional low-energy effective description of heterotic string theory. These solutions represent electrically charged, spherically symmetric black holes emitting or absorbing charged null fluids and generalize the Vaidya and Bonnor-Vaidya solutions of general relativity and of Einstein-Maxwell theory, respectively. The $a=1$ case stands out as special, in the sense that it is the only choice of the coupling that allows for …
We study N =4 super Yang-Mills theories on a three sphere with two kinds of chemical potentials. One is associated with the R-symmetry and the other with the rotational symmetry of S^3 (SO(4) symmetry). These correspond to the charged Kerr-AdS black holes via AdS/CFT. The exact partition functions at zero coupling are computed and the thermodynamical properties are studied. We find a nontrivial gap between the confinement/deconfinement transition line and the boundary of the phase diagram when we include more than four chemical potentials. In the dual gravity, we find such a gap in the phase d…
Phase diagrams of the boson stars and shells of the $U(1)$ gauged $\mathbb{C}P^N$ nonlinear sigma model are studied. The solutions of the model exhibit both the ball- and the shell-shaped charge density depending on $N$. There appear four independent regions of the solutions which are essentially caused from the coexistence of electromagnetism and gravity. We examine several phase diagrams of the boson stars and the shells and discuss what and how the regions are emerged. A coupling with gravity allows for harboring of the charged black holes for the $Q$-shell solutions. Some solutions are str…
In this work we present some new results which we have obtained in a study of the phase diagram of charged compact boson stars in the theory involving massive complex scalar fields coupled to the U(1) gauge field and gravity in a conical potential in the presence of a cosmological constant $Λ$ which we treat as a free parameter taking positive and negative values and thereby allowing us to study the theory in the de Sitter and Anti de Sitter spaces respectively. In our studies, we obtain four bifurcation points (possibility of more bifurcation points being not ruled out) in the de Sitter regio…
We investigate the stability of $D$ dimensional singly rotating Myers-Perry-AdS black holes under superradiance against scalar field perturbations. It is well known that small four dimensional rotating or charged Anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes are unstable against superradiance instability of a scalar field. Recent works extended the existence of this instability to five dimensional rotating charged AdS black holes or static charged AdS black holes in arbitrary dimensions. In this work we analytically prove that, rotating small AdS black holes in arbitrary dimensions also show superradiance …
In this paper, we consider a charged rotating AdS black holes in four dimensions and study the effects of leading-order thermal corrections on the thermodynamics of such system explicitly. The first-order corrected thermodynamical quantities also satisfy the first-law of thermodynamics of the black holes. The holographic duality between the charged rotating AdS black holes and Van der Waals fluid is also emphasized through the $P-v$ diagram. Finally, we study the effects of the leading-order thermal corrections on the stability of the charged rotating black holes.
In this paper, taking in to account Brans-Dick theory, we investigate thermodynamic behavior of charged black hole solutions. We study the analogy of the black hole solution with the Van der Waals liquid-gas system in the extended phase space by considering the cosmological constant as dynamical pressure. We obtain critical values of thermodynamic coordinates and plot $P-r_{+}$ and $G-T$ diagrams to study the phase transition.
A scalar field gravitational analog of the Reissner-Nordstrom solution is investigated. The nonlinear Newtonian model has an upper-limit of charge for a central mass which agrees with the general relativistic condition required for the existence of the black hole horizon. The maximum limit for accumulation by bombardment of charged particles is found. The aim is to investigate the resulting physics after severing the effects of curvature from the effects of energy-mass equivalence.
In this paper, we have considered the heat engine and Joule-Thomson expansion for the charged AdS black hole in the context of the non-linear electrodynamics and massive gravity. For the black hole heat engine, we obtained the analytical expression for the efficiency in terms of either the entropies or the temperatures and pressures in various limits. For the Joule-Thomson expansion of the black hole, we derived the isenthalpic curves in $T-P$ diagram, the Joule-Thomson coefficient, and the inversion curves. We also indicated in detail the effects of the non-linear electrodynamics and massive …
The semiclassical geometry of charged black holes is studied in the context of a two-dimensional dilaton gravity model where effects due to pair-creation of charged particles can be included in a systematic way. The classical mass-inflation instability of the Cauchy horizon is amplified and we find that gravitational collapse of charged matter results in a spacelike singularity that precludes any extension of the spacetime geometry. At the classical level, a static solution describing an eternal black hole has timelike singularities and multiple asymptotic regions. The corresponding semiclassi…
The recent observation that black holes in certain Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton (EMD) theories can violate the entropy super-additivity led to the suggestion that these black holes might repel each other. In this paper, we consider EMD theories with two Maxwell fields $A_i$, with general exponential couplings $\exp(a_i ϕ)$ in their kinetic terms. We calculate the gravi-electrostatic force between charged black holes $(m_1,e_1)$ and $(M_2,Q_2)$; the former is sufficiently small and can be treated as a point-like object. We find there is a potential barrier caused by the dilaton coupling at $r_0$ ou…
The black hole superradiance phenomena state that when a scalar wave perturbation is properly scattering off a charged or rotating black hole, the energy of the reflected scalar wave may be amplified. If this amplification process can occur back and forth through certain confining mechanisms, it will lead to strong instability of the black hole, which is so-called "black hole bomb". In this paper, the superradiant stability is investigated for dyonic black holes in string theory. Although the electric charged black hole in string theory has been proved superrdiantly stable, it is found that th…

This study revisits the absorption and scattering process by which a massless scalar field impinges on a charged dilatonic black hole. First, we review the classical analysis to obtain the deflection angle and the differential scattering cross-section. Then, using the partial wave method, we determine the total absorption cross-section numerically in terms of the decoupling parameter called $Mω$, finding that the amplitude of the dilatonic black hole is lower than the Reissner-Nordström one for mild frequencies. In the high-frequency limit, the absorption cross-section exhibits two different c…
In this article we study the geodesic motion of charged particles in the spacetime of an extremal rotating dyonic black hole in Kaluza-Klein theory. We derive the equations of motion and present their analytical solutions in terns of elliptic and hyperelliptic functions. Furthermore, we analyze the geodesic motions with the help of parametric diagrams and effective potentials.
Using Maxwell's equal area law, we discuss the phase transition of higher dimensional charged topological dilaton AdS black holes with a nonlinear source. The coexisting region of the two phases is found and we depict the coexistence region in $P-v$ diagrams. The two-phase equilibrium curves in $P-T$ diagrams are plotted, and we take the first order approximation of volume $v$ in the calculation. To better compare with a general thermodynamic system, the Clapeyron equation is derived for higher dimensional charged topological black hole with a nonlinear source. The latent heat of isothermal ph…
In this article charged black rings and black saturns are constructed in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory in five dimensions. The neutral black ring and black saturn solutions are embedded in six dimensions and boosted with respect to the time coordinate and the added sixth dimension. Then the charged solutions are obtained by a Kaluza-Klein reduction. The influence of the charge is studied by analysing the physical properties and the phase diagram. The different dilatonic solutions are compared and their thermodynamic stability is considered.
In this letter we present an exact spherically symmetric and magnetically charged black hole solution with exponential model of nonlinear electrodynamics [S. Kruglov, Annals Phys. 378, 59-70 (2017)] in the context of 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity. We show that our $-$ve branch, in the limit of GB coupling coefficient $α\rightarrow 0$ and the nonlinear parameter $β\to 0$, reduces to the magnetically charged black hole of Einstein-Maxwell gravity in GR. In addition we study the embedding diagram of the black hole geometry and the thermodynamic properties such as the Hawking temperature …
The study of thermodynamics in the view of the Hamiltonian approach is a newest tool to analyze the thermodynamic properties of the black holes. In this letter, we investigate the thermodynamics of $d$-dimensional ($d>3$) asymptotically AntideSitter black holes. A thermodynamic representation based on symplectic geometry is introduced in this letter. We extend the thermodynamics of $d-$dimensional charged AntideSitter black holes in the views of a Hamiltonian approach. Firstly, we study the thermodynamics in reduced phase space and correlate with the Schwarzschild solution. Then we enhance it …
In the present paper we study the geodesic motion of test particles and light rays in the spacetime of a static charged black hole in $f(R)$ gravity. The complete set of analytic solutions of the geodesic equations in the spacetime of this black hole are presented. The geodesic equations are solved in terms of Weierstrass elliptic $\wp$ function and derivatives of Kleinian $σ$ function. With the help of parametric diagrams and effective potentials we analyze the geodesic motion and give a list of all possible orbit types. The different types of the resulting orbits are characterized in terms o…
We study pion and kaon condensation using three-flavor chiral perturbation theory at finite isospin and strangeness quark chemical potentials μI and μS . The phase diagram consists of a vacuum phase and three distinct Bose condensed phases with condensates of charged pions as well as charged and neutral kaons. Adding electromagnetic interactions, a phase with a charged condensate becomes a Higgs phase and the resulting phase diagram is modified due to the electromagnetic mass splittings of the mesons. The results for the pion-condensed phase are applied to calculate mass-radius relation of pio…
Fermion-boson stars are starlike systems composed of the ordinary nuclear matter of a neutron star and bosonic dark matter. The bosonic dark matter has typically been taken to be a complex scalar field. A natural extension is for the complex scalar field to be charged. We make the simplest extension and gauge the scalar field under U(1). We therefore study fermion-charged-boson stars. We make a detailed study of the stability of this system by computing critical curves over the whole of parameter space. We then study how the fermion and boson sectors contribute to the total mass of the star. F…
