We consider the inverse problem of determining an electromagnetic potential appearing in an infinite cylindrical domain from boundary measurements. More precisely, we prove the stable recovery of some general class of magnetic field and electric potential from boundary measurements. Assuming some knowledge of the unknown coefficients close to the boundary, we obtain also some results of stable recovery with measurements restricted to some portion of the boundary. Our approach combines construction of complex geometric optics solutions and Carleman estimates suitably designed for our stability results stated in an unbounded domain.
We consider the unique recovery of a non compactly supported and non periodic perturbation of a Schrödinger operator in an unbounded cylindrical domain, also called waveguide, from boundary measurements. More precisely, we prove recovery of general class of electric potentials from the partial Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, where the Dirichlet data is supported on slightly more than half of the boundary and the Neumann data is taken on the other half of the boundary. We apply this result in different context including recovery of some general class of coefficients from measurements on a bounded sub…
We study the inverse problem of determining a magnetic Schrödinger operator in an unbounded closed waveguide from boundary measurements. We consider this problem with a general closed waveguide in the sense that we only require our unbounded domain to be contained into an infinite cylinder. In this context we prove the unique recovery of the magnetic field and the electric potential associated with general bounded and non-compactly supported electromagnetic potentials. By assuming that the electromagnetic potentials are known on the neighborhood of the boundary outside a compact set, we even p…
We study the stability issue for the inverse problem of determining a coefficient appearing in a Schrödinger equation defined on an infinite cylindrical waveguide. More precisely, we prove the stable recovery of some general class of non-compactly and non periodic coefficients appearing in an unbounded cylindrical domain. We consider both results of stability from full and partial boundary measurements associated with the so called Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. To the best of our knowledge, our results are the first results of stable recovery of such class of coefficients for an elliptic equation …

We give several generalizations of Rellich's classical uniqueness theorem to unbounded domains. We give a natural half-space generalization for super-exponentially decaying inhomogeneities using real variable techniques. We also prove under super-exponential decay a discrete generalization where the inhomogeneity only needs to vanish in a suitable cone. The more traditional complex variable techniques are used to prove the half-space result again, but with less exponential decay, and a variant with polynomial decay, but with supports exponentially thin at infinity. As an application, we prove …
We study the non-diffusive Westervelt equation in the weakly nonlinear regime. We show that the leading profile equation is of Burgers' type. We show that a compactly supported nonlinearity $α$ can be reconstructed from the tilt of the transmitted high frequency wave packets sent from different directions since those tilts are proportional to the X-ray transform of $α$.
The regularity of monotone transport maps plays an important role in several applications to PDE and geometry. Unfortunately, the classical statements on this subject are restricted to the case when the measures are compactly supported. In this note we show that, in several situations of interest, one can to ensure the regularity of monotone maps even if the measures may have unbounded supports.
We reconstruct compactly supported potentials with only half a derivative in $L^2$ from the scattering amplitude at a fixed energy. For this we draw a connection between the recently introduced method of Bukhgeim, which uniquely determined the potential from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, and a question of Carleson regarding the convergence to initial data of solutions to time-dependent Schrödinger equations. We also provide examples of compactly supported potentials, with $s$ derivatives in $L^2$ for any $s<1/2$, which cannot be recovered by these means. Thus the recovery method has a differen…
For the Stokes system in the half space, Kang [Math.~Ann.~2005] showed that a solution generated by a compactly supported, Hölder continuous boundary flux may have unbounded normal derivatives near the boundary. In this paper we first prove explicit global pointwise estimates of the above solution, showing in particular that it has finite global energy and its derivatives blow up everywhere on the boundary away from the flux. We then use the above solution as a profile to construct solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations which also have finite global energy and unbounded normal derivatives du…
We study the inverse problem of recovery a compactly supported non-linearity in the semilinear wave equation $u_{tt}-Δu+ α(x) |u|^2u=0$, in two and three dimensions. We probe the medium with complex-valued harmonic waves of wavelength $h$ and amplitude $h^{-1/2}$, then they propagate in the weakly non-linear regime; and measure the transmitted wave when it exits the support of $α$. We show that one can extract the Radon transform of $α$ from the phase shift of such waves, and then one can recover $α$. We also show that one can probe the medium with real-valued harmonic waves and obtain uniquen…
We study the inverse problem of recovery a non-linearity $f(x,u)$, which is compactly supported in $x$, in the semilinear wave equation $u_{tt}-Δu+ f(x,u)=0$. We probe the medium with either complex or real-valued harmonic waves of wavelength $\sim h$ and amplitude $\sim 1$. They propagate in a regime where the non-linearity affects the subprincipal but not the principal term, except for the zeroth harmonics. We measure the transmitted wave when it exits $\text{supp}_x f$. We show that one can recover $f(x,u)$ when it is an odd function of $u$, and we can recover $α(x)$ when $f(x,u)=α(x)u^{2m}…
We discuss a time-harmonic inverse scattering problem for the Helmholtz equation with compactly supported penetrable and possibly inhomogeneous scattering objects in an unbounded homogeneous background medium, and we develop a monotonicity relation for the far field operator that maps superpositions of incident plane waves to the far field patterns of the corresponding scattered waves. We utilize this monotonicity relation to establish novel characterizations of the support of the scattering objects in terms of the far field operator. These are related to and extend corresponding results known…
This paper is concerned with inverse source problems for the time-dependent Lamé system in an unbounded domain corresponding to the exterior of a bounded cavity or the full space $\R^3$. If the time and spatial variables of the source term can be separated with compact support, we prove that the vector valued spatial source term can be uniquely determined by boundary Dirichlet data in the exterior of a given cavity. Uniqueness and stability for recovering some class of time-dependent source terms are also obtained using partial boundary data.
We prove that in dimension $n \ge 2$ the main singularities of a complex potential $q$ having a certain a priori regularity are contained in the Born approximation $q_θ$ constructed from fixed angle scattering data. Moreover, ${q-q_θ}$ can be up to one derivative more regular than $q$ in the Sobolev scale. In fact, this result is optimal, we construct a family of compactly supported and radial potentials for which it is not possible to have more than one derivative gain. Also, these functions show that for $n>3$, the maximum derivative gain can be very small for potentials in the Sobolev scale…
We prove the existence of the set of ground states in a suitable energy space $Σ^s=\{u: \int_{\mathbb{R}^N} \bar{u}(-Δ+m^2)^s u+V |u|^2<\infty\}$, $s\in (0,\frac{N}{2})$ for the mass-subcritical nonlinear fractional Hartree equation with unbounded potentials. As a consequence we obtain, as a priori result, the orbital stability of the set of standing waves. The main ingredient is the observation that $Σ^s$ is compactly embedded in $L^2$. This enables us to apply the concentration compactness argument in the works of Cazenave-Lions and Zhang, namely, relative compactness for any minimizing sequ…
We study the long time behavior, as $t\to\infty$, of solutions of $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} u_t = u_{xx} + f(u), & x>0, \ t >0,\\ u(0,t) = b u_x(0,t), & t>0,\\ u(x,0) = u_0 (x)\geqslant 0 , & x\geqslant 0, \end{array} \right. $$ where $b\geqslant 0$ and $f$ is an unbalanced bistable nonlinearity. By investigating families of initial data of the type $\{ σϕ\}_{σ>0}$, where $ϕ$ belongs to an appropriate class of nonnegative compactly supported functions, we exhibit the sharp threshold between vanishing and spreading. More specifically, there exists some value $σ^*$ such that the solution conv…
In this article we focus on inverse problems for a semilinear elliptic equation. We show that a potential $q$ in $L^{n/2+\varepsilon}$, $\varepsilon>0$, can be determined from the full and partial Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. This extends the results from [M. Lassas, T. Liimatainen, Y.-H. Lin, and M. Salo, Partial data inverse problems and simultaneous recovery of boundary and coefficients for semilinear elliptic equations, Rev. Mat. Iberoam. (2021)] where this is shown for Hölder continuous potentials. Also we show that when the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map is restricted to one point on the boundary…
