We compute the quasinormal frequencies of $d$-dimensional spherically symmetric black holes with leading string $α'$ corrections in the eikonal limit for tensorial gravitational perturbations and scalar test fields. We find that, differently than in Einstein gravity, the real parts of the frequency are no longer equal for these two cases. The corresponding imaginary parts remain equal to the principal Lyapunov exponent corresponding to circular null geodesics, to first order in $α'$. We also compute the radius of the shadow cast by these black holes.
Quasinormal modes in the high frequency (eikonal) regime can be obtained analytically as the Mashhoon-Will-Schiutz WKB formula is exact in this case. This regime is interesting because of the correspondence between eikonal quasinormal modes and null geodesics, as well as due to existence of potential eikonal instabilities in some theories of gravity. At the same time in a number of studies devoted to quasinormal modes of spherically symmetric black holes this opportunity was omitted. Here we find analytical quasinormal modes of black holes in various alternative and extended theories of gravit…
In Phys. Rev. D 79, 064016 (2009) it was claimed that quasinormal modes which any stationary, spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat black hole emits in the eikonal regime are determined by the parameters of the circular null geodesic: the real and imaginary parts of the quasinormal mode are multiples of the frequency and instability timescale of the circular null geodesics respectively. We shall consider asymptotically flat black hole in the Einstein-Lovelock theory, find analytical expressions for gravitational quasinormal modes in the eikonal regime and analyze the null geodesics. Co…
Much of our physical intuition about black hole quasinormal modes in general relativity comes from the eikonal/geometric optics approximation. According to the well-established eikonal model, the fundamental quasinormal mode represents wavepackets orbiting in the vicinity of the black hole's geodesic photon ring, slowly peeling off towards the event horizon and infinity. Besides its strength as a "visualisation" tool, the eikonal approximation also provides a simple quantitative method for calculating the mode frequency, in close agreement with rigorous numerical results. In this paper we move…
We consider the equivalence of quasinormal modes and geodesic quantities recently brought back due to the black hole shadow observation by Event Horizon Telescope. Using WKB method we found an analytical relation between the real part of quasinormal frequencies at the eikonal limit and black hole shadow radius. We verify this correspondence with two black hole families in $4$ and $D$ dimensions, respectively.
In the scope of black hole spectroscopy, several attempts have been made in the past decades in order to test black holes or gravitational theories via black hole quasinormal modes. In the eikonal approximation, the quasinormal modes are generically associated with the photon ring of the black hole. This correspondence is valid for most cases in general relativity, but may not be true in other theories of gravity. In this paper, we consider the generalized energy-momentum squared gravity in which matter fields are non-minimally coupled to geometry. We investigate the axial perturbations of the…
We consider quantum corrections for the Schwarzschild black hole metric by using the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) to investigate quasinormal modes, shadow and their relationship in the eikonal limit. We calculate the quasinormal frequencies of the quantum-corrected Schwarzschild black hole by using the sixth-order Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation, and also perform a numerical analysis that confirms the results obtained from this approach. We also find that the shadow radius is nonzero even at very small mass limit for finite GUP parameter.
The geometric optics approximation provides an interpretation for eikonal correspondence that, in black-hole-containing spacetimes, connects high-frequency black hole quasinormal modes with closed photon orbits around said black hole. This correspondence has been identified explicitly for Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordström, Kerr, and Kerr-Newman black holes, the violation of which can be a potential hint toward physics beyond General Relativity. Notably, the aforementioned black hole spacetimes have sufficient symmetries such that both the geodesic equations and the master wave equations are se…
In this paper we investigate quasinormal modes (QNM) for a scalar field around a noncommutative Schwarzschild black hole. We verify the effect of noncommutativity on quasinormal frequencies by applying two procedures widely used in the literature. The first is the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation up to sixth order. In the second case we use the continuous fraction method developed by Leaver. Besides, we also show that due to noncommutativity, the shadow radius is reduced when we increase the noncommutative parameter. In addition, we find that the shadow radius is nonzero even at t…
We find an exact black hole solution with a minimally coupled scalar field. The corresponding spacetime has two horizons and one of the them is the black hole event horizon and the other is the cosmic horizon. In this sense, the solution is analogous to the Schwarzschild-de Sitter (or anti-de Sitter) spacetime. We investigate the thermodynamics and construct the first law of thermodynamics. At the same time, we make a study on the shadow and quasinormal modes of this black hole solution.
Using series solutions and time-domain evolutions, we probe the eikonal limit of the gravitational and scalar-field quasinormal modes of large black holes and black branes in anti-de Sitter backgrounds. These results are particularly relevant for the AdS/CFT correspondence, since the eikonal regime is characterized by the existence of long-lived modes which (presumably) dominate the decay timescale of the perturbations. We confirm all the main qualitative features of these slowly-damped modes as predicted by Festuccia and Liu (arXiv:0811.1033) for the scalar-field (tensor-type gravitational) f…
Null geodesics, quasinormal modes of a massless scalar field perturbation and the correspondence with shadow radii are investigated in the background spacetime of high-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills black holes. Based on the properties of null geodesics, we obtain the connection between the radius of a photon sphere and the radius of a horizon in the five- and six-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills spacetimes. Especially in the five-dimensional case, there exist two branches for the radius of a photon sphere, but only the branch outside the event horizon satisfies the condition of circular null …
We construct an exact black hole solution for the Einstein gravity coupled with the nonlinear electrodynamics (which corresponds to the Maxwell electrodynamics in the weak field limit) in the presence of a cloud of strings as the source. We study the thermodynamical properties of the black hole solutions and derive the corrected first-law of thermodynamics. The presence of a cloud of strings does not affect the stability of the present black hole. However, a second-order phase transition exists for this system at a critical horizon radius. Furthermore, we study the quasinormal modes and their …
Black hole perturbation theory is a useful approach to study interactions between black holes and fundamental fields. A particular class of black hole solutions arising out of modification of Einstein's general theory of relativity are regular black holes (RBHs) which can be constructed using a nonlinear electrodynamic Lagrangian. Because of their importance, we are interested in studying the behavior of three kinds of such RBHs under perturbations generated by an external field. Indeed, we investigate the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of a massive scalar field propagating near the RBHs which is no…
The spherically symmetric deformation of the Schwarzschild solution owing to the quantum corrections to gravity is known as Kazakov-Solodukhin black-hole metric. Neglecting non-spherical deformations of the background the problem was solved non-perturbatively. Here we analyze the basic characteristics of this geometry, such as: quasinormal modes and grey-body factors of fields of various spin and shadow cast by this black hole. The WKB approach and time-domain integration method, which we used for calculation of quasinormal modes, are in a good concordance. The analytical formula for quasinorm…
In this paper, we investigate the photon sphere, shadow radius and quasinormal modes of a four-dimensional charged Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole. The perturbation of a massless scalar field in the black hole's background is adopted. The quasinormal modes are gotten by the $6th$ order WKB approximation approach and shadow radius, respectively. When the value of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant increase, the values of the real parts of the quasinormal modes increase and those of the imaginary parts decrease. The coincidence degrees of quasinormal modes derived by the two approaches increase…
In this paper we study the shadow of rotating Kaluza-Klein (KK) black holes and the connection between the shadow radius and the real part of quasi-normal modes (QNMs) in the eiokonal limit. In addition we have explored the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the rotating KK black hole.
In this paper, we consider the Einstein-massive gravity coupled to the Yang-Mills gauge field in five dimensions. Concentrating on the static solutions with planar horizon geometry, we explore the thermodynamic behavior in the extended phase space and examine the validity of the first law of thermodynamics besides local thermal stability by the Hessian matrix. We observe that although the topology of boundary is planar, there exists the van der Waals like phase transition for this kind of solution. We find the critical quantities and discuss how the massive and Yang-Mills parameters affect the…
An analytical solution representing traversable asymptotically flat and symmetric wormholes was obtained without adding exotic matter in two different theories independently: in the Einstein-Maxwell-Dirac theory and in the second Randall-Sundrum brane-world model. Further, a smooth normalizable asymmetric wormhole solution has been recently obtained numerically in the Einstein-Maxwell-Dirac theory. Using the time-domain integration method we study quasinormal ringing of all these wormholes with emphasis to the regime of mimicking the near extremal Reissner-Nordström black holes, which is chara…
Classical (quasinormal) and quantum (Hawking) radiations are investigated for test fields in the background of a four dimensional, spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat black hole in the Einstein-dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet (EdGB) theory. The geometry of the EdGB black hole deviates from the Schwarzschild geometry only slightly. Therefore, here we observe that the quasinormal spectrum also deviates from its Schwarzschild limit at most moderately, allowing for a $9\%$ decrease in the damping rate and up to a $6\%$ decrease in the real oscillation frequency. However, the intensity of Hawking ra…
We compute the quasinormal frequencies for scalar perturbations of charged black holes in five-dimensional Einstein-power-Maxwell theory. The impact on the spectrum of the electric charge of the black holes, of the angular degree, of the overtone number, and of the mass of the test scalar field is investigated in detail. The quasinormal spectra in the eikonal limit are computed as well for several different space-time dimensionalities.
We compute the spectrum of quasinormal frequencies of regular black holes obtained in the presence of Non-Linear Electrodynamics. In particular, we perturb the black hole with a minimally coupled massive scalar field, and we study the corresponding perturbations adopting the 6th order WKB approximation. We analyze in detail the impact on the spectrum of the charge of the black hole, the quantum number of angular momentum and the overtone number. All modes are found to be stable. Finally, a comparison with other charged black holes is made, and an analytical expression for the quasinormal spect…
We obtain a type of Ayón-Beato-Garc\'ıa (ABG) related black hole solutions with five parameters: the mass $m$, the charge $q$, and three dimensionless parameters $α$, $β$ and $γ$ associated with nonlinear electrodynamics. We find that this type of black holes is regular under the conditions: $αγ\geqslant 6$, $βγ\geqslant 8$, and $γ>0$. Here we focus on the saturated case: $α={6}/γ$ and $β={8}/{γ}$, such that only three parameters $m$, $q$ and $γ$ remain, which leads to a new family of ABG black holes. For such a family of black holes, we investigate the influence of the charge $q$ and the para…
In this paper, we consider black holes in the consistent Aoki-Gorji-Mukohyama theory of the four-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (4D EGB) gravity in the presence of Born-Infeld (BI) nonlinear electrodynamics. We study several optical features of these black holes such as the shadow radius, energy emission rate and deflection angle, and analyse the effect of the coupling constants, the electric charge and cosmological constant on the considered optical quantities. Furthermore, we also employ the connection between the shadow radius and quasinormal modes (QNMs) and investigate small scalar per…
We obtain the solution of a generalized ABG STVG black hole with the nonlinear tensor field $B_{μν}$ in the scalar-tensor-vector gravity. This black hole is endowed with four parameters, the black hole mass $M$, the parameter $α$ associated with the STVG theory, and the two parameters $λ$ and $β$ that are related to the dipole and quadrupole moments of the nonlinear tensor field, respectively. By analyzing the characteristics of the black hole, we find that the generalized ABG STVG black hole is regular when $λ\geqslant 3$ and $β\geqslant 4$, and we study the effects of the parameters $α$, $λ$…
Recently a $D$-dimensional regularization approach leading to the non-trivial $(3+1)$-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) effective description of gravity was formulated which was claimed to bypass the Lovelock's theorem and avoid Ostrogradsky instability. Later it was shown that the regularization is possible only for some broad, but limited, class of metrics and Aoki, Gorji and Mukohyama [arXiv:2005.03859] formulated a well-defined four-dimensional EGB theory, which breaks the Lorentz invariance in a theoretically consistent and observationally viable way. The black-hole solution of the …
After recent observational events like the LIGO-Virgo detections of gravitational waves and the shadow image of M87* supermassive black hole by Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), the theoretical study of black holes was significantly improved. Quantities as quasinormal frequencies, shadows, and light deflection become more important to analyze black hole models. In this context, an interesting scenario to study is a black hole in the bumblebee gravity. The bumblebee vector field imposes a spontaneous symmetry breaking that allows the field to acquire a vacuum expectation value that generates Loren…
In this paper, we construct an effective rotating loop quantum black hole (LQBH) solution, starting from the spherical symmetric LQBH by applying the Newman-Janis algorithm modified by Azreg-Aïnou's non-complexification procedure, and study the effects of loop quantum gravity { (LQG) on its shadow}. Given the rotating {LQBH}, we discuss its horizon, ergosurface, and regularity {as} $r \to 0$. Depending on the values of the specific angular momentum $a$ and the polymeric function $P$ arising from {LQG}, we {find} that the rotating solution we obtained can represent a regular black hole, a regul…
The purpose of this short communication is to show that the theory of Breit-Wigner resonances can be used as an efficient numerical tool to compute black hole quasinormal modes. For illustration we focus on the Schwarzschild anti-de Sitter (SAdS) spacetime. The resonance method is better suited to small SAdS black holes than the traditional series expansion method, allowing us to confirm that the damping timescale of small SAdS black holes for scalar and gravitational fields is proportional to r_+^(-2l-2), where r_+ is the horizon radius. The proportionality coefficients are in good agreement …
The fundamental resonances of rapidly rotating Kerr black holes in the eikonal limit are derived analytically. We show that there exists a critical value, $μ_c=\sqrt{{15-\sqrt{193}\over{2}}}$, for the dimensionless ratio $μ\equiv m/l$ between the azimuthal harmonic index $m$ and the spheroidal harmonic index $l$ of the perturbation mode, above which the perturbations become long lived. In particular, it is proved that above $μ_c$ the imaginary parts of the quasinormal frequencies scale like the black-hole temperature: $ω_I(n;μ>μ_c)=2πT_{BH}(n+{1\over 2})$. This implies that for perturbations m…
The numerical study indicates that there exists a relation between the quasinormal modes and the Davies point for a black hole. In this paper, we analytically study this relation for the charged Reissner-Nordström black holes in asymptotically flat and dS spacetimes. In the eikonal limit, the angular velocity $Ω$ and the Lyapunov exponent $λ$ of the photon sphere, respectively, corresponding to the real and imaginary parts of the quasinormal modes are obtained from the null geodesics. Both in asymptotically flat and dS spacetimes, we observe the spiral-like shapes in the complex quasinormal mo…
We show that nearly extremal Kerr black holes have two distinct sets of quasinormal modes, which we call zero-damping modes (ZDMs) and damped modes (DMs). The ZDMs exist for all harmonic indices $l$ and $m \ge 0$, and their frequencies cluster onto the real axis in the extremal limit. The DMs have nonzero damping for all black hole spins; they exist for all counterrotating modes ($m<0$) and for corotating modes with $0\leq μ\lesssim μ_c=0.74$ (in the eikonal limit), where $μ\equiv m/(l+1/2)$. When the two families coexist, ZDMs and DMs merge to form a single set of quasinormal modes as the bla…
Here we have shown that asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (GB) theory are unstable under linear perturbations of spacetime in some region of parameters. This (eikonal) instability develops at high multipole numbers. We found the exact parametric regions of the eikonal instability and extended this consideration to asymptotically flat and de Sitter cases. The approach to the threshold of instability is driven by purely imaginary quasinormal modes, which are similar to those found recently in [5] for the higher curvature corrected black hole with the pl…
The quasinormal resonant modes of massless neutral fields in near-extremal Kerr-Newman-de Sitter black-hole spacetimes are calculated in the eikonal regime. It is explicitly proved that, in the angular momentum regime ${\bar a}> \sqrt{{1-2{\barΛ}\over{4+{\barΛ}/3}}}$, the black-hole spacetimes are characterized by slowly decaying resonant modes which are described by the compact formula $\Imω(n)=κ_+\cdot(n+{1\over2})$ [here the physical parameters $\{{\bar a},κ_+,{\barΛ},n\}$ are respectively the dimensionless angular momentum of the black hole, its characteristic surface gravity, the dimensio…
For a static and spherically symmetric black hole, a photon sphere is composed of circular null geodesics of fixed radius, and plays an important role in observing the black hole. Recently, in an Einstein-Maxwell-scalar model with a non-minimal coupling between the scalar and electromagnetic fields, a class of hairy black holes has been found to possess two unstable and one stable circular null geodesics on the equatorial plane, corresponding to three photon spheres outside the event horizon. In this paper, we study quasinormal modes of the scalar field, which are associated with these circula…
A large portion of the studies concerning the quasinormal mode frequencies of a Kerr black hole have focused only on achieving higher numerical accuracy with limited emphasis on providing their physical interpretation. In this article, we partially address this issue by computing the quasinormal mode frequency spectrum of a Kerr black hole using the theory of Regge poles. By considering the retarded Green's function of the Teukolsky equation, we establish for scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations an equation linking the Regge poles to the quasinormal frequencies and we solve …
