This paper aims to study the magneto-plasmons in an anisotropic graphene nano-waveguide with bigyrotropic cover and substrate. The substrate is backed by a perfect electromagnetic conductor (PEMC) layer, a general and ideal boundary, which can be transformed easily into the perfect electric conductor (PEC) or the perfect magnetic conductor (PMC) boundaries. The upper and bottom layers of the graphene sheet are made of different magnetic materials. The external magnetic field is applied perpendicularly to the structure surface, which can be provided by a permanent magnet placed underneath the ground plane. Hence, the graphene sheet has anisotropic conductivity tensor. A novel analytical model has been proposed for the general nano-waveguide to find its propagation properties. As special cases of the proposed general structure, two important new waveguides have been introduced and studied to show, first the richness of the proposed general nano-waveguide regarding the related specific plasmonic wave phenomena and effects, and second the validity and the high accuracy of the proposed model. The analytical and the simulation results are in an excellent agreement. It is shown that the modal properties of the proposed structure can be tuned effectively via the external magnetic field and the chemical potential of the graphene. Harnessing the non-reciprocity effect of anisotropic materials and the graphene sheet, the presented analytical model can be exploited to design tunable innovative devices in THz frequencies.
Enhancement of magneto-optical effects in hybrid magneto-plasmonic systems has attracted considerable recent attention owing to their potential for building non-reciprocal nanophotonic devices. Quantitative understanding on the fundamental origin and contributing mechanisms for the enhancement is extremely crucial for optimizing applications. Here, we unravel the distinctly different physical origin of the giant enhancement of Faraday rotation and ellipticity in a hybrid magneto-plasmonic system, namely, waveguided magneto-plasmonic crystal for excitation with transverse electric (TE) and tran…
In recent years, the hybridization of hyperbolic van der Waals heterostructures with plasmonic two-dimensional nano-materials is one of the interesting research areas at THz frequencies due to the coupled features of the hybrid structure. This article investigates the propagation of tunable surface phonon-plasmon polaritons in grounded hybrid graphene-hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) heterostructures. An analytical model is presented for the proposed structure, by applying the boundary conditions for the electromagnetic components in the various regions, to derive an exact dispersion relation. Th…
In this work, a 2D magneto-plasmonic grating structure combining materials with ferromagnetic and plasmonic properties is demonstrated. NiFe composite ferromagnetic material, as an active medium with tunable physical properties, and Au metal, as a plasmonic excitation layer, were the materials of choice. Here, we have experimentally investigated the active control of the plasmonic characteristics in Au/NiFe bilayer by the action of an external magnetic field, as well as the switching effect of the system. The active plasmonic control, can be achieved by the magnetization switching of the ferro…
Enhancing magneto-optical effects is crucial for size reduction of key photonic devices based on non-reciprocal propagation of light and to enable active nanophotonics. We disclose a so far unexplored approach that exploits dark plasmons to produce an unprecedented amplification of magneto-optical activity. We designed and fabricated non-concentric magnetoplasmonic-disk/plasmonic-ring-resonator nanocavities supporting multipolar dark modes. The broken geometrical symmetry of the design enables coupling with free-space light and hybridization of dark modes of the ring nanoresonator with the dip…
We propose a novel method to enhance the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (TMOKE) in the magneto-plasmonic (MP) nanostructures by means of the active dielectric layer. We report the theoretical analysis of the magnetoplasmonic structure with a ferromagnetic dielectric doped with rear-earth ions (Nd3+) as the example of a gain layer. The enhancement takes place near the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) resonances of the nanostructures. The stimulated emission of the dopants in the field of SPP wave partially compensates its losses. It is shown that due to a decrease of SPP damping a Q-fact…
We analytically and numerically investigate magneto-plasmons in metal films surrounded by a ferromagnetic dielectric. In such waveguide using a metal film with a thickness exceeding the Skin depth, an external magnetic field in the transverse direction can induce a significant spatial asymmetry of mode distribution. Superposition of the odd and the even asymmetric modes over a distance leads to a concentration of the energy on one interface which is switched to the other interface by the magnetic field reversal. The requested magnitude of magnetization is exponentially reduced with the increas…
Here we propose and study a novel type of plasmonic resonators based on a metal-insulator-metal waveguide and a side-coupled magneto-optical disk controlled by an external magnetic field. The wavenumber change and the transmission of surface-plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) can be tuned by altering the magnetic field and reversible on/off switching of the running SPP modes by a reversal of the direction of the external magnetic field is demonstrated. Resonant enhancement of the magneto-plasmonic modulation by more than 200 times leads to a modulation contrast ratio more than tenfold ratio (90-\%-modu…
Magnetoplasmonics exploits interactions between light and magnetic matter at the nanoscale for light manipulation and resonant magneto-optics. One of the great challenges of this field is overcoming optical losses in magnetic metals. Here we exploit surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) excited at the interface of a SiO2/Au bilayer to induce strong magneto-optical responses on the Ni nanodisks of a periodic array. Using a reference system made of Au nanodisks, we show that optical losses in Ni do hardly broaden the linewidth of SPP-driven magneto-optical signals. Loss mitigation is attained becaus…
Here we demonstrate the enhancement of the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (TMOKE) signal, in the Otto configuration, due to surface plasmon resonance. We present an architecture where the low index dielectric has a variable thickness. This allows the plasmon resonance to be tuned, depending on the magnetic sample and thus be utilized to enhance the MOKE signal of samples separated from the plasmonic device. We have achieved this by using air as low index dielectric where the evanescent wave extends, preceding to excitation of surface plasmons. The magnetic sample under consideration is…
Chiral nanophotonic devices are promising candidates for chiral molecules sensing, polarization diverse nanophotonics and display technologies. Active chiral nanophotonic devices, where the optical chirality can be controlled by an external stimulus has triggered great research interest. However, efficient modulation of the optical chirality has been challenging. Here, we demonstrate switching of the extrinsic chirality by applied magnetic fields in a magneto-plasmonic metasurface device based on a magneto-optical oxide material, Ce1Y2Fe5O12 (Ce:YIG). Thanks to the low optical loss and strong …
The diffraction of a plane wave by a magneto-optical cavity located on a metal interface is investigated theoretically. We show that the excitation of localized eigenmodes of the cavity allows one to efficiently excite the surface plasmon polariton (SPP). We exploit the polarization and symmetry properties of the cavity modes to propose an efficient approach for controlling the SPP intensity through an external magnetic field. The presented theoretical predictions are in good agreement with the rigorous computations based on the generalized Lorentz reciprocity theorem and aperiodic Fourier mod…
Optical isolator remains one of the main missing elements for photonic integrated circuits despite several decades of research. The best solutions up to now are based on transverse magneto-optical effect using either narrow-band resonators or high-gyrotropy magneto-optical materials with difficult integration on usual photonic platforms. We propose in this paper a radically new concept which enables performing broad-band non-reciprocal transmission even in the case of low-gyrotropy material. The principle explores the separation of back and forth light paths, due to the magneto-biplasmonic eff…
In this Letter we study the generation of quasi-static magnetic fields by the plasmon-induced inverse Faraday effect and propose a magneto-optical waveguide structure for achieving magnetization switching at sub-ps time in a nano-confined magneto-optical structure. In particular we show that the direction of the generated quasi-static field in a magneto-optical dielectric cavity side-coupled to a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide depends sensitively on the wavelength of the surface plasmon polaritions (SPP). This phenomenon could open up a new energy-efficient ultrafast method for nano-con…
A giant thermal magnetoresistance is predicted for the electromagnetic transport of heat in magneto-optical plasmonic structures. In chains of InSb-Ag nanoparticles at room temperature, we found that the resistance can be increased by almost a factor of 2 with magnetic fields of 2 T. We show that this important change results from the strong spectral dependence of localized surface waves on the magnitude of the magnetic field.
This article proposes a novel analytical model for the anisotropic multi-layer structures containing magnetically biased graphene sheets. The multi-layer structure is composed of various magnetic materials. An external magnetic field is applied, normal to the structure surface. Each graphene sheet, with an anisotropic conductivity tensor, has been sandwiched between two adjacent magnetic materials. Our model is used to find the dispersion relation of the structure. Now, obtaining plasmonic features of the structure, such as the effective index and propagation loss is straightforward. Four exem…
Magnetic-field-biased indium antimonide (InSb) is one of the most widely-discussed materials for supporting nonreciprocal surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), which have recently been shown to be topological. In this work, we provide a critical assessment of InSb as a magneto-optical SPP platform, and show that it is only viable under a narrow set of conditions.
We examine the efficacy of Dark-mode plasmonics as a platform for enhanced magneto-optics. Dark-mode of a small particle consists of two co-existing equal-intensity and mutually opposing dipolar excitations. Each of these two opposing dipoles may even resonate at or near the dark-mode frequency, but the net dipole moment vanishes due to the mutual cancelation between the opposing dipoles. We show that application of external magnetic bias may alleviate the intense destructive interference. Furthermore, under external magnetic bias the opposing dark-resonances of a plasmonic particle shift in o…
In order to maximize the transversal magneto-optic Kerr effect (T-MOKE) of a Au/Co/Au structure, we propose a method to obtain the optimum thickness values. A criteria based on preserving good plasmonic properties has been included as part of this method. Using the theoretical prediction, we grew Au/Co/Au trilayers and perform optical andMO characterization using the Kretschmann configuration. The results admit very easy interpretation in terms of the interaction between the magneto-optical and plasmonic properties dictating the optimal thicknesses of the structure. Moreover, we have grown and…
Magnetoplasmonics is highly promising to devise active optical elements: modulating the plasmon resonance condition with magnetic field can boost the performance of refractometric sensors and nanophotonic optical devices. Nevertheless, real life applications are hampered by the magnetoplasmonic trilemma: 1) a good plasmonic metal has sharp optical resonances but low magneto-optical response; 2) a magnetic metal has strong magneto-optical response but a very broad plasmonic resonance; 3) mixing the two components degrades the quality of both features. To overcome the trilemma, we use a differen…
By viewing plasmon waves in metallic waveguides as propagating electric and magnetic dipoles we show that according to laws of quantum mechanics they will acquire additional phase when propagating through space with static magnetic field. The new effect is physically different from conventional magneto-plasmonic phenomena and is sufficiently strong to observe it under routinely accessible experimental conditions.
Here we demonstrate a novel smart magnetoplasmonic heterostructure for efficient control of light. It consists of gold nanoparticles embedded in a thin magnetic film covered with a gold layer pierces with periodic nanoslit array. Unique feature of the proposed structure is that it supports four different types of optical modes in the same frequency range including localized and propagating surface plasmons along with waveguide modes. A peculiar magneto-optical response appears at the frequencies of the mode hybridization. The most prominent result comes from hybridization of the localized and …
In this chapter, criteria for existence of propagating optical modes which are transversely bound at the interface of two materials are studied. In particular, quite general cases are considered, where the materials involved are assumed to be anisotropic, but also demonstrating magneto-electric effects. Moreover, surface states of two-dimensional materials like topological insulators and graphene are also modeled via consideration of a conductivity sheet existing at the interface. A characteristic equation for obtaining the propagation constant of generalized interface modes is presented. Furt…
Graphene is a unique material to study fundamental limits of plasmonics. Apart from the ultimate single-layer thickness, its carrier concentration can be tuned by chemical doping or applying an electric field. In this manner the electrodynamic properties of graphene can be varied from highly conductive to dielectric. Graphene supports strongly confined, propagating surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) in a broad spectral range from terahertz to mid-infrared frequencies. It also possesses a strong magneto-optical response and thus provides complimentary architectures to conventional magneto-plasmo…
We theoretically investigate the generation of far-field propagating optical beams with a desired orbital angular momentum by using an archetypical magnetoplasmonic tip surrounded by a gold spiral slit. The use of a magnetic material can lead to important implications once magneto-optical activity is activated through the application of an external magnetic field. The physical model and the numerical study presented here introduce the concept of magnetically tunable plasmonic vortex lens, namely a magnetoplasmonic vortex lens, which ensures a tunable selectivity in the polarization state of th…
Chirality is a fundamental asymmetry phenomenon, with chiral optical elements exhibiting asymmetric response in reflection or absorption of circularly polarized light. Recent realizations of such elements include nanoplasmonic systems with broken mirror symmetry and polarization-contrasting optical absorption known as circular dichroism. An alternative route to circular dichroism is provided by spin-valley polarized excitons in atomically thin semiconductors. In the presence of magnetic fields, they exhibit an imbalanced coupling to circularly polarized photons and thus circular dichroism. Her…
Nanostructured magneto-optical materials sustaining optical resonances open very efficient way for light control via magnetic field, which is of prime importance for telecommunication and sensing applications. However, usually their response is narrowband due to its resonance character. Here we demonstrate and investigate a novel type of the magnetoplasmonic structure, the magnetoplasmonic quasicrystal, which demonstrates unique magneto-optical response. It consists of the magnetic dielectric film covered by a thin gold layer perforated by slits forming a Fibonacci-like binary sequence. The tr…
In this work, we revisit the topic of surface waves on nonreciprocal plasmonic structures, and clarify whether strictly unidirectional surface plasmon-polaritons are allowed to exist in this material platform. By investigating different three-dimensional configurations and frequency regimes, we theoretically show that, while conventional surface magneto-plasmons are not strictly unidirectional due to nonlocal effects, consistent with recent predictions made in the literature, another important class of one-way surface plasmon-polaritons, existing at an interface with an opaque isotropic materi…
Large surface plasmon polariton assisted enhancement of the magneto-optical activity has been observed in the past, through spectral measurements of the polar Kerr rotation in Co hexagonal antidot arrays. Here, we report a strong thickness dependence, which is unexpected given that the Kerr effect is considered a surface sensitive phenomena. The maximum Kerr rotation was found to be -0.66 degrees for a 100 nm thick sample. This thickness is far above the typical optical penetration depth of a continuous Co film, demonstrating that in the presence of plasmons the critical lengthscales are drama…
Ultra-thin magnetic dielectric films are of prime importance due to their applications for nanophotonics and spintronics. Here, we propose an efficient method for the magneto-optical investigation of ultra-thin magnetic films which allows one to access their state of magnetization and magneto-optical properties. It is based on the surface-plasmon-polariton-assisted transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (TMOKE). In our experiments, sub-100 nm-thick bismuth-substituted lutetium iron-garnet films covered with a plasmonic gold grating have been analyzed. The excitation of surface plasmon-polarito…
In this paper we reveal the physics behind the formation of tri- and tetra-hyperbolic phases in anisotropic metamaterials without magnetoelectric coupling and describe the anti-crossing splitting phenomenon in the hyperbolic dispersion which arises due to the hybridization of the plasmonic and magnetic Bloch high-k polaritons. This considerably deepens the understanding of the high-k polaritons and the topology of the optical iso-frequency surfaces in k-space and will find applications in optical nano-resolution imaging and emission rate and directivity control. To accomplish this, we develop …
Supplementing our STM and electron emission studies investigations, concluding in electron pairing in strong laser fields [1], further time-of-flight electron emission studies were carried out, changing the angle of polarization of the incident light, exciting surface plasmon oscillations. It has been found, that those parts of the electron spectrum which have been attributed to electron pairing have a significantly different angular dependence around 80 GW/cm2 where the pairing effect has been found than outside this region (e.g. 120 GW/cm2). These results have been interpreted as the appeara…
In this article, tunable surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in graphene-based elliptical waveguides containing gyro-electric layers are investigated. The general structure has an elliptical cross-section, where each gyro-electric layer is surrounded by two graphene layers. The DC magnetic bias is applied on the z-axis. As a special case, a new plasma-based elliptical structure with double-layer graphene is studied in this paper. The figure of merit (FOM) for this waveguide can be varied by changing the magnetostatic bias and the chemical doping. At the frequency of 40 THz, the FOM of 139 for th…
We propose a scheme to directionally couple light into graphene plasmons by placing a graphene sheet on a magneto-optical substrate. When a magnetic field is applied parallel to the surface, the graphene plasmon dispersion relation becomes asymmetric in the forward and backward directions. It is possible to achieve unidirectional excitation of graphene plasmons with normally incident illumination by applying a grating to the substrate. The directionality can be actively controlled by electrically gating the graphene, or by varying the magnetic bias. This scheme may have applications in graphen…
The formation of a stable magneto plasmonic dimer with THz resonances is theoretically studied for the principal directions of the system. Unlike a recent report, our work provides a complete description of the full photonic coupling for arbitrary magnetic fields as, for instance, unbalanced particle spins. As an illustration, we consider two small, n-doped InSb nanoparticles under illumination by two counter-propagating plane waves. Remarkably, when an external magnetic field exists, the symmetry in the system is broken, and a resonant radiation pressure for the dimer appears. Similarly, tuna…
We propose a general and complete classification of all possible new and old kinds of surface plasmon waves that can propagate at boundaries of arbitrary linear, local bi-anisotropic media, including the quartic metamaterials. For arbitrary frequency, wavelength, propagation direction, penetration depths and fields of the proposed surface plasmon waves we found the dispersion condition and determined the 72-parametric class of media that support a particular surface plasmon. A member of each class is a pair of anisotropic materials without magnetoelectric couplings.
In this paper, we propose a new analytical model for grounded chiral slab waveguides covered with graphene sheets. The general waveguide is constructed of a graphene sheet sandwiched between two different chiral layers (as substrate and cover layers). The substrate is supposed to be a perfect electromagnetic conductor (PEMC), which is able to easily convert to a perfect electric conductor (PEC) or a perfect magnetic conductor (PMC). A novel matrix representation is obtained for the general structure to find its dispersion relation and other propagating parameters. To show the richness of the p…
We theoretically investigated the magnetically-tunable cutoff of long-range surface plasmon polariton along thin metal film surrounded by a magneto-optic material on one side and by a nonmagnetic dielectric on the other side. The analytically derived cutoff condition predicts that a magnetic field bias can induce a novel degenerate cutoff-state near which the beyond-cutoff radiation in one side can be switched to that in the other side by a minor variation of the magnetic field from the bias. The magnetization bias needed for the degeneracy is in proportion to the metal film thickness and in i…
Topological materials bear gapped excitations in bulk yet protected gapless excitations at boundaries. Magnetoplasmons (MPs), as high-frequency density excitations of two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a perpendicular magnetic field, embody a prototype of band topology for bosons. The time-reversal-breaking magnetic field opens a topological gap for bulk MPs up to the cyclotron frequency; topologically-protected edge magnetoplasmons (EMPs) bridge the bulk gap and propagate unidirectionally along system's boundaries. However, all the EMPs known to date adhere to physical edges where the ele…
