We consider two-dimensional Pauli and Dirac operators with a polynomially vanishing magnetic field. The main results of the paper provide resolvent expansions of these operators in the vicinity of their thresholds. It is proved that the nature of these expansions is fully determined by the flux of the magnetic field. The most important novelty of the proof is a comparison between the spatial asymptotics of the zero modes obtained in two different manners. The result of this matching allows to compute explicitly all the singular terms in the associated resolvent expansions. As an application we show how the magnetic field influences the time decay of the associated wave-functions quantifying thereby the paramagnetic and diamagnetic effects of the spin.
By developing the method of multipliers, we establish sufficient conditions on the magnetic field and the complex, matrix-valued electric potential, which guarantee that the corresponding system of Schrödinger operators has no point spectrum. In particular, this allows us to prove analogous results for Pauli operators under the same electromagnetic conditions and, in turn, as a consequence of the supersymmetric structure, also for magnetic Dirac operators.
We study the asymptotic behavior, as Planck's constant $\hbar\to 0$, of the number of discrete eigenvalues and the Riesz means of Pauli and Dirac operators with a magnetic field $μ\mathbf{B}(x)$ and an electric field. The magnetic field strength $μ$ is allowed to tend to infinity as $\hbar\to 0$. Two main types of results are established: in the first $μ\hbar\le constant$ as $\hbar\to 0$, with magnetic fields of arbitrary direction; the second results are uniform with respect to $μ\ge 0$ but the magnetic fields have constant direction. The results on the Pauli operator complement recent work o…
We analyze basic relativistic wave equations for the classical fields, such as Dirac's equation, Weyl's two-component equation for massless neutrinos, and the Proca, Maxwell, and Fierz-Pauli equations, from the viewpoint of the Pauli-Lubanski vector and the Casimir operators of the Poincare group. In general, in this group-theoretical approach, the above wave equations arise in certain overdetermined forms, which can be reduced to the conventional ones by a Gaussian elimination. A connection between the spin of a particle/field and consistency of the corresponding overdetermined system is emph…
We consider Pauli--Dirac fermion submitted to an inhomogeneous magnetic field. It is showed that the propagator of the neutral Dirac particle with an anomalous magnetic moment in an external linear magnetic field is the causal Green function $S^{c}(x_{b},x_{a})$ of the Pauli--Dirac equation. The corresponding Green function is calculated via path integral method in global projection, giving rise to the exact eigenspinors expressions. The neutral particle creation probability corresponding to our system is analyzed, which is obtained as function of the introduced field $B'$ and the additional s…
We demonstrate that neutral Dirac particles in external electric fields, which are equivalent to generalized Dirac oscillators, are physical examples of quasi-exactly solvable systems. Electric field configurations permitting quasi-exact solvability of the system based on the $sl(2)$ symmetry are discussed separately in spherical, cylindrical, and Cartesian coordinates. Some exactly solvable field configurations are also exhibited.
The algebra of conserved observables of the SO(4,1) gauge-invariant theory of the Dirac fermions in the external field of the Kaluza-Klein monopole is investigated. It is shown that the Dirac conserved operators have physical parts associated with Pauli operators that are also conserved in the sense of the Klein-Gordon theory. In this way one gets simpler methods of analyzing the properties of the conserved Dirac operators and their main algebraic structures including the representations of dynamical algebras governing the Dirac quantum modes.
Using the Pauli-Villars regularization and arguments from convex analysis, we construct solutions to the classical time-independent Maxwell equations in Dirac's vacuum, in the presence of small external electromagnetic sources. The vacuum is not an empty space, but rather a quantum fluctuating medium which behaves as a nonlinear polarizable material. Its behavior is described by a Dirac equation involving infinitely many particles. The quantum corrections to the usual Maxwell equations are nonlinear and nonlocal. Even if photons are described by a purely classical electromagnetic field, the re…
A basic problem in linear particle optics is to find a symplectic transformation that brings the (symmetric) beam matrix to a special diagonal form, called normal form. The conventional way to do this involves an eigenvalue-decomposition of a matrix related to the beam matrix, and may be applied to the case of 1, 2 or 3 particle degrees of freedom. For 2 degrees of freedom, a different normalization method involving "real Dirac matrices" has recently been proposed. In the present article, the mathematics of real Dirac matrices is presented differently. Another normalization recipe is given, an…
We consider Dirac, Pauli and Schrödinger quantum magnetic Hamiltonians of full rank in ${\rm L}^2 \big(\mathbb{R}^{2d} \big)$, $d \ge 1$, perturbed by non-self-adjoint (matrix-valued) potentials. On the one hand, we show the existence of non-self-adjoint perturbations, generating near each point of the essential spectrum of the operators, infinitely many (complex) eigenvalues. In particular, we establish point spectrum analogous of Bögli results [Bög17] obtained for non-magnetic Laplacians, and hence showing that classical Lieb-Thirring inequalities cannot hold for our magnetic models. On the …
We derive explicit semiclassical quantisation conditions for the Dirac and Pauli equations. We show that the spin degree of freedom yields a contribution which is of the same order of magnitude as the Maslov correction in Einstein-Brillouin-Keller quantisation. In order to obtain this result a generalisation of the notion of integrability for a certain skew product flow of classical translational dynamics and classical spin precession has to be derived. Among the examples discussed is the relativistic Kepler problem with Thomas precession, whose treatment sheds some light on the amazing succes…
The modified Dirac-Pauli equations, which is entered by means of ${γ_5}$-mass extension of Hamiltonian operators, are considered. We also take into account the interaction of fermions with the intensive homogenous magnetic field focusing attention on (g-2) gyromagnetic factor of particles with spin $1/2$. Without the use of perturbation theory in the external field the exact energy spectra are deduced with regard to spin effects of fermions. We discuss the possible proposals of experimental measuring of properties of new particles which arising in this model.
We investigate physical models which possess simultaneous ordinary and type A N-fold supersymmetries, which we call type A (N,1)-fold supersymmetry. Inequivalent type A (N,1)-fold supersymmetric models with real-valued potentials are completely classified. Among them, we find that a trigonometric Rosen-Morse type and its elliptic version are of physical interest. We investigate various aspects of these models, namely, dynamical breaking and interrelation between ordinary and N-fold supersymmetries, shape invariance, quasi-solvability, and an associated algebra which is composed of one bosonic …
We consider the perturbations $H := H_{0} + V$ and $D := D_{0} + V$ of the free 3D Hamiltonians $H_{0}$ of Pauli and $D_{0}$ of Dirac with non-constant magnetic field, and $V$ is a electric potential which decays super-exponentially with respect to the variable along the magnetic field. We show that in appropriate Banach spaces, the resolvents of $H$ and $D$ defined on the upper half-plane admit meromorphic extensions. We define the resonances of $H$ and $D$ as the poles of these meromorphic extensions. We study the distribution of resonances of $H$ close to the origin 0 and that of $D$ close …
The Pauli operator describes the energy of a nonrelativistic quantum particle with spin 1/2 in a magnetic field and an external potential. A new Lieb-Thirring type inequality on the sum of the negative eigenvalues is presented. The main feature compared to earlier results is that in the large field regime the present estimate grows with the optimal (first) power of the strength of the magnetic field. As a byproduct of the method, we also obtain an optimal upper bound on the pointwise density of zero energy eigenfunctions of the Dirac operator. The main technical tools are: (i) a new localizati…
We consider 2- and 3-dimensional Schrödinger or generalized Schrödinger-Pauli operators with the non-degenerating magnetic field in the open domain under certain non-degeneracy assumptions we derive pointwise spectral asymptotics. We also consider asymptotics of some related expressions (see below). For all asymptotics loops rather than periodic trajectories play important role.
Generalized Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonian with Kato-class potential $\KPF$ in nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics is defined and studied by a path measure. $\KPF$ is defined as the self-adjoint generator of a strongly continuous one-parameter symmetric semigroup and it is shown that its bound states spatially exponentially decay pointwise and the ground state is unique.
An interesting discovery in the last two years in the field of mathematical physics has been the exceptional $X_\ell$ Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials. Unlike the well-known classical orthogonal polynomials which start with constant terms, these new polynomials have lowest degree $\ell=1,2,...$, and yet they form complete set with respect to some positive-definite measure. While the mathematical properties of these new $X_\ell$ polynomials deserve further analysis, it is also of interest to see if they play any role in physical systems. In this paper we indicate some physical models in which th…
We consider the Pauli operator in $\mathbb R^3$ for magnetic fields in $L^{3/2}$ that decay at infinity as $|x|^{-2-β}$ with $β> 0$. In this case we are able to prove that the existence of a zero mode for this operator is equivalent to a quantity $δ(\mathbf B)$, defined below, being equal to zero. Complementing a result from [Balinsky, Evans, Lewis (2001)], this implies that for the class of magnetic fields considered, Sobolev, Hardy and CLR inequalities hold whenever the magnetic field has no zero mode.
The quantum field theory of extended objects is employed to address the hitherto nonrenormalizable Pauli interaction. This is achieved by quantizing the Dirac field using the infinite dimensional generalization of the extended object formulation. The order $α$ contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron (and of the muon) arising from the Pauli term is calculated.
In quantum information context, the groups generated by Pauli spin matrices, and Dirac gamma matrices, are known as the single qubit Pauli group P, and two-qubit Pauli group P2, respectively. It has been found [M. Socolovsky, Int. J. Theor. Phys. 43, 1941 (2004)] that the CPT group of the Dirac equation is isomorphic to P. One introduces a two-qubit entangling orthogonal matrix S basically related to the CPT symmetry. With the aid of the two-qubit swap gate, the S matrix allows the generation of the three-qubit real Clifford group and, with the aid of the Toffoli gate, the Weyl group W(E8) is …
We consider limiting Carleman weights for Dirac operators and prove corresponding Carleman estimates. In particular, we show that limiting Carleman weights for the Laplacian also serve as limiting weights for Dirac operators. As an application we consider the inverse problem of recovering a Lipschitz continuous magnetic field and electric potential from boundary measurements for the Pauli Dirac operator.
We investigate the behaviour of the eigenvalues of two-dimensional Pauli operators with nonconstant magnetic fields perturbed by a sign-indefinite decaying electric potential V. We prove new eigenvalues asymptotics.
This paper is the second one of a series of three and it is the continuation of math-ph/0412074. We review some properties of the algebraic spinors in Cl(3,0) and Cl(0,3) and how Weyl, Pauli and Dirac spinors are constructed in Cl(3,0) (and Cl(0,3) in the case of Weyl spinors. A plane wave solution for the Dirac equation is obtained, and the Dirac equation is written in terms of Weyl spinors, and alternatively, in terms of Pauli spinors. Finally the covariant and contravariant undotted spinors in Cl(0,3), isomorphic to two copies of the quaternion algebra (H), are constructed. We prove that th…
Transition to a nonrelativistic Pauli equation in Riemann space of constant positive curvature for a Dirac particle in presence of the Coulomb field is performed in the system of radial equations, exact solutions are constructed in terms of Hein functions, the energy spectrum is derived. The same is done for the Kepler quantum problem in hyperbolic Lobachevsky space, solutions are constructed in terms of Hein functions, the energy spectrum is obtained.
The aim of this paper is to give an extension of the improved Sobolev embedding theorem for single-valued functions to the case of vector-valued functions which is involved with the three-dimensional massless Dirac operator together with the three- or two-dimensional Weyl--Dirac (or Pauli) operator, the Cauchy--Riemann operator and also the four-dimensional Euclidian Dirac operator.
We review the non-trivial issue of the relativistic description of a quantum mechanical system that, contrary to a common belief, kept theoreticians busy from the end of 1920s to (at least) mid 1940s. Starting by the well-known works by Klein-Gordon and Dirac, we then give an account of the main results achieved by a variety of different authors, ranging from de Broglie to Proca, Majorana, Fierz-Pauli, Kemmer, Rarita-Schwinger and many others. A particular interest comes out for the general problem of the description of particles with \textit{arbitrary} spin, introduced (and solved) by Majoran…
The action functional of the Standard Model of particle physics is intimately related to a specific class of first order differential operators called Dirac operators of Pauli type ("Pauli-Dirac operators"). The aim of this article is to carefully analyze the geometrical structure of this class of Dirac operators on the basis of real Dirac operators of simple type. On the basis of simple type Dirac operators, it is shown how the Standard Model action (STM action) may be viewed as generalizing the Einstein-Hilbert action in a similar way the Einstein-Hilbert action is generalized by a cosmologi…
We show that the Dirac factorization method can be successfully employed to treat problems involving operators raised to a fractional power. The technique we adopt is based on an extension of the Pauli matrices and the properties of the roots of unity. We also comment about the possibility of using the method to linearize evolution equations containing the $n$-th root of differential operators and make a comparison with other techniques involving suitable transforms.
A particle with spin 1/2 is investigated both in expanding and oscillating cosmological de Sitter models. It is shown that these space-time geometries admit existence of the non-relativistic limit in the covariant Dirac equation. Procedure for transition to the Pauli approximation is conducted in the equations in the variables $(t, r)$, obtained after separating the angular dependence of $(θ, ϕ)$ from the wave function. The non-relativistic systems of equations in the variables $(t, r)$ is solved exactly in both models. The constructed wave functions do not represent stationary states with fix…
We study a system composed of a hydrogen atom interacting with an infinite conductor wall. The interaction energy decays like $L^{-3}$, where $L$ is the distance between the atom and the wall, due to the emergence of the van der Waals forces. In this paper we show how, considering the contributions from the quantum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field, the interaction is weakened to a decay of order $L^{-4}$ giving rise to the retardation effects which fall under the name of Casimir-Polder effect. The analysis is done by studying a suitable Pauli-Fierz model associated to the system, in d…
We obtain a dispersive long-time decay in weighted energy norms for solutions of the 1D Dirac equation with generic potential. The decay extends the results obtained by Jensen, Kato and Murata for the Schrödinger equations.
We prove the existence of exponentially accurate quasimodes using the square of the Dirac operator on the Schwarzschild-Anti-de Sitter spacetime and the Agmon estimates. We then deduce a logarithmic lower bound for the local energy decay of the Dirac propagator.
We prove sharp pointwise decay estimates for critical Dirac equations on $\mathbb{R}^n$ with $n\geq 2$. They appear for instance in the study of critical Dirac equations on compact spin manifolds, describing blow-up profiles, and as effective equations in honeycomb structures. For the latter case, we find excited states with an explicit asymptotic behavior. Moreover, we provide some classification results both for ground states and for excited states.
We investigate the local energy decay of solutions of the Dirac equation in the non-extreme Kerr-Newman metric. First, we write the Dirac equation as a Cauchy problem and define the Dirac operator. It is shown that the Dirac operator is selfadjoint in a suitable Hilbert space. With the RAGE theorem, we show that for each particle its energy located in any compact region outside of the event horizon of the Kerr-Newman black hole decays in the time mean.
In this paper, we study the opening of a spectral gap for a class of 2-dimensional periodic Hamiltonians which include those modelling multilayer graphene. The kinetic part of the Hamiltonian is given by $σ\cdot F(-i\nabla)$, where $σ$ denotes the Pauli matrices and $F$ is a sufficiently regular vector-valued function which equals 0 at the origin and grows at infinity. Its spectrum is the whole real line. We prove that a gap appears for perturbations in a certain class of periodic matrix-valued potentials depending on $F$, and we study how this gap depends on different parameters.
Physical problems for which the existence of non-trivial topological Pauli phase (i.e. fractional quantization of angular orbital angular momenta that is possible in 2D case) is essential are discussed within the framework of two-dimensional Helmholtz, Schroedinger and Dirac equations. As examples in classical field theory we consider a "wedge problem" -- a description of a field generated by a point charge between two conducting half-planes -- and a Fresnel diffraction from knife-edge. In few-electron circular quantum dots the choice between integer and half-integer quantization of orbital an…
In this paper we present for the first time a complete description of the Bohm model of the Dirac particle. This result demonstrates again that the common perception that it is not possible to construct a fully relativistic version of the Bohm approach is incorrect. We obtain the fully relativistic version by using an approach based on Clifford algebras outlined in two earlier papers by Hiley and by Hiley and Callaghan. The relativistic model is different from the one originally proposed by Bohm and Hiley and by Doran and Lasenby. We obtain exact expressions for the Bohm energy-momentum densit…
We consider the massive Dirac equation in the exterior region of the 5-dimensional Myers-Perry black hole. Using the resulting ODEs obtained from the separation of variables of the Dirac equation, we construct an integral spectral representation for the solution of the Cauchy problem with compactly supported smooth initial data. We then prove that the probability of presence of a Dirac particle to be in any compact region of space decays to zero as $t\to\infty$, in analogy with the case of the Dirac operator in the Kerr-Newman geometry.
We study the polarization tensor of a Dirac field in $(3+1)$ dimensions confined to a half space -- a problem motivated by applications to the condensed matter physics, and to Topological Insulators in particular. Although the Pauli-Villars regularization scheme has a number of advantages, like explicit gauge invariance and decoupling of heavy modes, it is not applicable on manifolds with boundaries. Here, we modify this scheme by giving an axial mass to the regulators and to the physical field. We compute the renormalized polarization tensor in coordinate representation. We discuss then the i…
