We report an enhanced magnetoelastic contribution to the Gilbert damping in highly magnetostrictive Fe$_{0.7}$Ga$_{0.3}$ thin films. This effect is mitigated for perpendicular-to-plane fields, leading to a large anisotropy of the Gilbert damping in all of the films (up to a factor of 10 at room temperature). These claims are supported by broadband measurements of the ferromagnetic resonance linewidths over a range of temperatures (5 to 400 K), which serve to elucidate the effect of both the magnetostriction and phonon relaxation on the magnetoelastic Gilbert damping.
We present a comprehensive first principles electronic structure study of the magnetoelastic and magnetostrictive properties in the Co-based Co$_2$XAl (X = V, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe) full Heusler compounds. In addition to the commonly used total energy approach, we employ torque method to calculate the magnetoelastic tensor elements. We show that the torque based methods are in general computationally more efficient, and allow to unveil the atomic- and orbital-contributions to the magnetoelastic constants in an exact manner, as opposed to the conventional approaches based on second order perturbation …
A method is developed which allows to determine the first-order and the second-order magnetoelastic coefficients of a magnetic bulk material from the ab-initio calculation of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy as function of a prestrain. Excplicit results are given for bcc Fe, and they agree well with experimental data obtained from the magnetostrictive stress measurements for epitaxial Fe films.
A theoretical study of stress-impedance effect based on the solution of Landau-Lifsitz-Gilbert equation has been carried out. The results show that stress impedance effects depend largely on several extrinsic (external bias field, external frequency) and intrinsic (orientation and magnitude of uniaxial anisotropy, damping) parameters.
In this work we report the appearence of a large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in Fe$_{1-x}$Ga$_x$ thin films grown onto ZnSe/GaAs(100). This arising anisotropy is related to the tetragonal metastable phase in as-grown samples recently reported [M. Eddrief {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 84}, 161410 (2011)]. By means of ferromagnetic resonance studies we measured PMA values up to $\sim$ 5$\times$10$^5$ J/m$^3$. PMA vanishes when the cubic structure is recovered upon annealing at 300$^{\circ}$C. Despite the important values of the magnetoelastic constants measured via the cantilever m…
The anomalous Nernst effect in nanostructured magnetic materials is a key phenomenon to optimally control and employ the internal energy dissipated in electronic devices, being dependent on for instance the magnetic anisotropy of the active element. Thereby, here we report a theoretical and experimental investigation of the magnetic properties and anomalous Nernst effect in a flexible magnetostrictive film with induced uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and under external stress. Specifically, we calculate the magnetization behavior and the thermoelectric voltage response from a theoretical approach…
Indirect magnetoelectric effect has been studied in magnetostrictive-film/substrate/piezoelectric-actuator heterostructures. Two different substrates have been employed: a flexible substrate (Young's modulus of 4 GPa) and a rigid one (Young's modulus of 180 GPa). A clear optimization of the indirect magnetoelectric coupling, studied by micro-strip ferromagnetic resonance, has been highlighted when using the polymer substrate. However, in contrast to the rigid substrate, the flexible substrate also leads to an a priori undesirable and huge uniaxial anisotropy which seems to be related to a non …
The magnetoelastic coupling in multiferroic $DyMn_2O_5$ is investigated by magnetostriction measurements along the three crystallographic orientations. Strong lattice anomalies as a function of the magnetic field are detected at the low temperature magnetic and ferroelectric phase transitions. The sign and magnitude of the magnetostrictive coefficient as well as the lattice anomalies at the transitions are correlated with the Dy moment order and with the sharp changes of the dielectric constant and the ferroelectric polarization. With the magnetic field applied along the c-axis a new high-fiel…
Electric-field control of magnetism via inverse magnetostrictive effect is an efficient path towards improving energy-efficient storage and sensing devices based on giant magnetoresistance effect. In this letter, we report on lateral electric-field driven strain-mediated modulation of magnetic properties in Co$/$Cu$/$Py pseudo spin valve grown on ferroelectric PMN-PT substrate. We show a decrease of the giant magnetoresistance ratio of the pseudo spin valve with increasing electric field, which is attributed to the deviation of the Co layer magnetization from the initial direction due to strai…
Magnetoelastic and magnetoelectric coupling in the artificial multiferroic heterostructures facilitate valuable features for device applications such as magnetic field sensors and electric write magnetic-read memory devices. In a ferromagnetic/ferroelectric heterostructures, the strain mediated coupling exploits piezoelectricity/electrostriction in ferroelectric phase and magnetostriction/piezomagnetism in ferromagnetic phase. Such verity of these combined effect can be manipulated by an external perturbation, such as electric field, temperature or magnetic field. Here, we demonstrate the remo…
We investigate the magnetoelastic properties of $\mathrm{Co_{25}}\mathrm{Fe_{75}}$ and $\mathrm{Co_{10}}\mathrm{Fe_{90}}$ thin films by measuring the mechanical properties of a doubly clamped string resonator covered with multi-layer stacks containing these films. For the magnetostrictive constants we find $λ_{\mathrm{Co_{25}}\mathrm{Fe_{75}}}=(-20.68\pm0.25)\times10^{-6}$ and $λ_{\mathrm{Co_{10}}\mathrm{Fe_{90}}}=(-9.80\pm0.12)\times10^{-6}$ at room temperature. In stark contrast to the positive magnetostriction previously found in bulk CoFe crystals. $\mathrm{Co_{25}}\mathrm{Fe_{75}}$ thin f…
We study the interaction of Rayleigh and shear horizontal surface acoustic waves (SAWs) with spin waves in thin Ni films on a piezoelectric LiTaO$_3$ substrate, which supports both SAW modes simultaneously. Because Rayleigh and shear horizontal modes induce different strain components in the Ni thin films, the symmetries of the magnetoelastic driving fields, of the magnetoelastic response, and of the transmission nonreciprocity differ for both SAW modes. Our experimental findings are well explained by a theoretical model based on a modified Landau--Lifshitz--Gilbert approach. We show that the …
This study reports the effects of post-growth He$^+$ irradiation on the magneto-elastic properties of a $Ni$ /$Fe$ multi-layered stack. The progressive intermixing caused by He$^+$ irradiation at the interfaces of the multilayer allows us to tune the saturation magnetostriction value with increasing He$^+$ fluences, and even to induce a reversal of the sign of the magnetostrictive effect. Additionally, the critical fluence at which the absolute value of the magnetostriction is dramatically reduced is identified. Therefore insensitivity to strain of the magnetic stack is nearly reached, as requ…

We present an extensive experimental and theoretical study of surface acoustic wave-driven ferromagnetic resonance. In a first modeling approach based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, we derive expressions for the magnetization dynamics upon magnetoelastic driving that are used to calculate the absorbed microwave power upon magnetic resonance as well as the spin current density generated by the precessing magnetization in the vicinity of a ferromagnet/normal metal interface. In a second modeling approach, we deal with the backaction of the magnetization dynamics on the elastic wave by …
Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) is a necessary condition for many spintronic applications like spin-orbit torques switching, logic and memory devices. An important class of magnetic insulators with low Gilbert damping at room temperature are iron garnets, which only have a few PMA types such as terbium and samarium iron garnet. More and stable PMA garnet options are necessary for researchers to be able to investigate new spintronic phenomena. In this study, we predict 20 new substrate/magnetic iron garnet film pairs with stable PMA at room temperature. The effective anisotropy energies…
We investigate generation of exchange magnons by ultrashort, picosecond acoustic pulses propagating through ferromagnetic thin films. Using the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations we derive the dispersion relation for exchange magnons for an external magnetic field tilted with respect to the film normal. Decomposing the solution in a series of standing spin wave modes, we derive a system of ordinary differential equations and driven harmonic oscillator equations describing the dynamics of individual magnon mode. The external magnetoelastic driving force is given by the time-dependent spatial Fou…
