This study reports the effects of post-growth He$^+$ irradiation on the magneto-elastic properties of a $Ni$ /$Fe$ multi-layered stack. The progressive intermixing caused by He$^+$ irradiation at the interfaces of the multilayer allows us to tune the saturation magnetostriction value with increasing He$^+$ fluences, and even to induce a reversal of the sign of the magnetostrictive effect. Additionally, the critical fluence at which the absolute value of the magnetostriction is dramatically reduced is identified. Therefore insensitivity to strain of the magnetic stack is nearly reached, as required for many applications. All the above mentioned effects are attributed to the combination of the negative saturation magnetostriction of sputtered Ni, Fe layers and the positive magnetostriction of the Ni$_{x}$Fe$_{1-x}$ alloy at the intermixed interfaces, whose contribution is gradually increased with irradiation. Importantly the irradiation does not alter the layers polycrystalline structure, confirming that post-growth He$^+$ ion irradiation is an excellent tool to tune the magneto-elastic properties of magnetic samples. A new class of spintronic devices can be envisioned with a material treatment able to arbitrarily change the magnetostriction with ion-induced "magnetic patterning".
We show a method to control magnetic interfacial effects in multilayers with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) using helium (He$^{+}$) ion irradiation. We report results from SQUID magnetometry, ferromagnetic resonance as well as Brillouin light scattering results on multilayers with DMI as a function of irradiation fluence to study the effect of irradiation on the magnetic properties of the multilayers. Our results show clear evidence of the He$^{+}$ irradiation effects on the magnetic properties which is consistent with interface modification due to the effects of the He$^{+}$ irradiat…
Coupling between dynamic strain and magnetization in ferromagnetic thin films has attracted special consideration as it presents both intriguing fundamental physics problems and technological importance for potential multi-functional devices and information handling. The dynamic strain can be generated by acoustic waves including bulk, surface or guided waves. In this work, we propose the theoretical and experimental investigation of the interaction of pure shear horizontal (SH) wave with a uniaxial multilayered TbCo2/FeCo thin film in a delay line configuration fabricated on Quartz ST-90X cut…
The tunability of Ar+ ion irradiation of Co/Pd multilayers has been employed to create depth-dependent perpendicular anisotropy gradients. By adjusting the Ar+ kinetic energy and fluence, the depth and lateral density of the local structural modification are controlled. First-order reversal curve analysis through X-ray magnetic circular dichroism and conventional magnetometry studies show that the local structural damage weakens the perpendicular anisotropy near the surface, leading to a magnetization tilting towards the in-plane direction. The ion irradiation method is complementary to, and m…

Ion-irradiation-induced modifications of a periodic Pt/C multilayer system containing Fe impurity have been analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The multilayer stack with 16 Pt/C layer pairs (period 4.23 nm) was fabricated on a glass substrate. A 2 MeV Au$^{2+}$ ion beam was rastered on the sample to obtain uniformly irradiated strips with fluences from 1$\times10^{14}$ to 1$\times10^{15}$ $ions/cm^2$. Ion-irradiation has been found to cause preferential migration of Fe towards Pt layers [Nucl. Instr. Methods Phys. Res. B212 (2003) 530]. Cross-sectional transmission electron mic…
The effects of ion beam induced atomic mixing and subsequent thermal treatment in Si/C multilayer structures are investigated by use of the technique of grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The [Si (3.0 nm) / C (2.5 nm)]x10 /Si multilayer films were prepared by electron beam evaporation under ultra high vacuum (UHV) environment. The layer thicknesses were measured using in-situ quartz crystal oscillator. These multilayer films were subjected to 40 keV Ar+ ion irradiation with fluences 5E-16 (low fluence) and 1E-17 ions / cm2 (high fluence). The as-prepared and irr…
Hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) mono and multilayers are promising hosts for room temperature single photon emitters (SPEs). In this work we explore high energy (~ MeV) electron irradiation as a means to generate stable SPEs in hBN. We investigate four types of exfoliated hBN flakes - namely, high purity multilayers, isotopically pure hBN, carbon rich hBN multilayers and monolayered material - and find that electron irradiation increases emitter concentrations dramatically in all samples. Furthermore, the engineered emitters are located throughout hBN flakes (not only at flake edges or grain bou…
The continuous need towards improving the capacity of magnetic storage devices requires materials with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. FePd, CoPd and their Co(Fe)Pt counterparts very attractive candidate for such purposes. The magnetic properties of these films are largely dependent on the orientation and local distribution of the L10 FePd phase fraction which are mainly controlled by diffusion processes and involve diffusion paths of a few angstroms. Highly ordered as well as disordered epitaxial isotope-periodic 57FePd/natFePd (001) thin films were prepared by molecular-beam epitax…
Recent decades have witnessed the breakthroughs in utilizing electron beams as the smallest tools to tailor materials. Whereas, the manipulation of atoms in a controllable manner by the electron beams is a long-time challenge due to the random nature of atom-knock-on. Here, we show that electron irradiation can controllably manipulate atoms in newly-developed MXene multilayers. The multilayers consist of many few-atom-thick transition metal carbide slabs that are terminated with hydroxyl and O functional groups on each slab. Upon electron irradiation, the H atoms of the hydroxyl are knocked of…
We report the optical perturbation of atomic arrangement in the layered GeTe/Sb_{2}Te_{3} phase change memory material. To observe the structural change, the coherent A_{1} mode of GeTe_{4} local structure is investigated at various polarization angles of femtosecond pump pulses with the fluence at < 78 μJ/cm^{2}. p-polarization found to be more effective in inducing the A_{1} frequency shift that can be either reversible or irreversible, depending on the pump fluence. The predominant origin of this shift is attributed to rearrangement of Ge atoms driven by anisotropic dissociation of the Ge-T…
The Cu/Fe/Pd multilayers were transformed into L10-ordered FePdCu alloy by pulsed laser annealing. The initial multilayers were irradiated with 1, 10, 100, and 1000 laser pulses with duration time of 10 ns and energy density of 235 mJ/cm2. The gradual change of the number of laser pulses allowed to investigate the structural and magnetic properties at early stages of the transformation and L10-ordering processes. The measurements were carried out using X-Ray Diffraction, SQUID magnetometry, and Magnetic Force Microscopy. We found that L10 FePdCu (111)-oriented nanograins are formed by ordering…
Ever since its discovery in 1996, ultrafast demagnetization has ignited immense research interest due to its scientific rigor and technological potential. A flurry of recent theoretical and experimental investigations has proposed direct and indirect excitation processes in separate systems. However, it still lacks a unified mechanism and remains highly debatable. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate that instead of either direct or indirect interaction, simultaneous and controlled excitation of both direct and indirect mechanisms of demagnetization are possible in a multilayers composed o…
In the framework of swift heavy ion - matter interaction, the thermal spike has proved its worth since nearly two decades. This paper deals with the necessary refinement of the computation due to the kind of materials involved i.e. nanomaterials such as multilayered systems or composite films constitued of nanocylinders or nanospheres embedded in matrix. The three dimensional computation of the thermal spike model is applied for the first time in layers containing spherical nanoparticles embedded in a silica matrix. The temperature profile calculated at each point (x,y,z) of the target for tim…
Enhancing the Plasmonic Hotspot Density via Structural Engineering of Multi-layered MoO3-Ag-Au Systems Under Extreme Electronic Excitation Conditions for Ultra-Sensitive SERS Applications
Exchange bias stems from the interaction between different magnetic phases and therefore it generally occurs in magnetic multilayers. Here we present a large exchange bias in a single SrRuO3 layer induced by helium ion irradiation. When the fluence increases, the induced defects not only suppress the magnetization and the Curie temperature, but also drive a metal-insulator transition at a low temperature. In particular, a large exchange bias field up to around 0.36 T can be created by the irradiation. This large exchange bias is related to the coexistence of different magnetic and structural p…
Magnetic skyrmions are quasiparticles with non-trivial topology, envisioned to play a key role in next-generation data technology while simultaneously attracting fundamental research interest due to their emerging topological charge. In chiral magnetic multilayers, current-generated spin-orbit torques or ultrafast laser excitation can be used to nucleate isolated skyrmions on a picosecond timescale. Both methods, however, produce randomly arranged skyrmions, which inherently limits the precision on the location at which the skyrmions are nucleated. Here, we show that nanopatterning of the anis…
Interfaces separating ferromagnetic (FM) layers from non-ferromagnetic layers offer unique properties due to spin-orbit coupling and symmetry breaking, yielding effects such as exchange bias, perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, spin-pumping, spin-transfer torques, conversion between charge and spin currents and vice-versa. These interfacial phenomena play crucial roles for magnetic data storage and transfer applications, which require forming FM nano-structures embedded in non-ferromagnetic matrices. Here, we investigate the possiblity of creating such nano-structures by ion-irradiation. We stu…
Electric-field control of magnetism via inverse magnetostrictive effect is an efficient path towards improving energy-efficient storage and sensing devices based on giant magnetoresistance effect. In this letter, we report on lateral electric-field driven strain-mediated modulation of magnetic properties in Co$/$Cu$/$Py pseudo spin valve grown on ferroelectric PMN-PT substrate. We show a decrease of the giant magnetoresistance ratio of the pseudo spin valve with increasing electric field, which is attributed to the deviation of the Co layer magnetization from the initial direction due to strai…
Here we demonstrate that MnTe epitaxial films with zinc-blend structure and MnTe/ZnTe multilayers should show ferroelectric polarization in antiferromagnetically (AFM) ordered state and thus belong to multiferroics. Spontaneous ferroelectric polarization results from the bending of highly ionic Mn-Te-Mn bonds induced by magnetostrictive shear strain. Orientation of ferroelectric polarization is coupled with orientation of AFM vector and thus can be controlled by application of the external magnetic field. Due to the clamping of electric and magnetic order parameters, domain structure in MnTe i…
Magnetic skyrmions have great potential for developing novel spintronic devices. The electrical manipulation of skyrmions has mainly relied on current-induced spin-orbit torques. A recent theoretical model suggested that the skyrmions could be more efficiently manipulated by surface acoustic waves (SAW), an elastic wave that can couple with magnetic moment through magnetoelastic effect. However, the directional motion of skyrmions that is driven by SAW is still missing. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the motion of Néel-type skyrmions in Ta/CoFeB/MgO/Ta multilayers driven by propagating SA…
Molecular dynamics simulations have been used to obtain the three-dimensional distribution of interfacial mixing and cascade defects in Ti/Pt multilayer system due to single 1 keV $Ar^+$ impacts at grazing angle of incidence. The Ti/Pt system was chosen because of its relatively high heat of mixing in the binary alloy and therefore a suitable candidate for testing the effect of heat of mixing on ion-beam mixing. However, the calculated mixing profile is not sensitive to the heat of mixing. Therefore the thermal spike model of mixing is not fully supported under these irradiation conditions. In…

Understanding the stability limitations and defect formation mechanisms in 2D magnets is essential for their utilization in spintronic and memory technologies. Here, we correlate defects in mono- to multilayer CrSBr with their structural, vibrational and magnetic properties. We use resonant Raman scattering to reveal distinct vibrational defect signatures. In pristine CrSBr, we show that bromine atoms mediate vibrational interlayer coupling, allowing for distinguishing between surface and bulk defect modes. We show that environmental exposure causes drastic degradation in monolayers, with the …
