In this paper, one uses a damped potential to present a description of the running coupling constant of QCD in the confinement phase. Based on a phenomenological perspective for the Debye screening length, one compares the running coupling obtained here with both the Brodsky-de Téramond-Deur and the Richardson approaches. The results seem to indicate the model introduced here corroborate the Richardson approach. Moreover, the Debye screening mass in the confinement phase depends on a small parameter, which tends to vanish in the non-confinement phase of QCD.
We consider colour-electric screening as expressed by the quark contribution to the Debye mass calculated in a PNJL model with emphasis on confining and chiral symmetry breaking effects. We observe that the screening mass is entirely determined by the nonperturbative quark distribution function and temperature dependent QCD running coupling. The role of the gluon background (Polyakov loop) is to provide strong suppression of the number of charge carriers below the transition temperature, as an effect of confinement, while the temperature dependent dynamical quark mass contributes additional su…
I review the excellent phenomenological status of a class of dynamical vacuum models in which the vacuum energy density, $ρ_Λ=ρ_Λ(H)$, as a function of the Hubble rate, evolves through its interaction with dark matter and/or through the accompanying running of the gravitational coupling $G$, including the possibility of being self-conserved with a nontrivial effective equation of state. Some of these models have been used to incorporate into a single vacuum structure the rapid stage of inflation, followed by the standard radiation and cold dark matter epochs all the way down until the dark ene…
The cosmological term, $Λ$, in Einstein's equations is an essential ingredient of the `concordance' $Λ$CDM model of cosmology. In this mini-review presentation, we assess the possibility that $Λ$ can be a dynamical quantity, more specifically a `running quantity' in quantum field theory in curved spacetime. A great deal of phenomenological works have shown in the last few years that this option (sometimes accompanied with a running gravitational coupling) may cure some of the tensions afflicting the $Λ$CDM. The `running vacuum models' (RVM's) are characterized by the vacuum energy density, $ρ_…
We suggest an empirical rule-of-thumb for calculating the cross sections of charged-current quasielastic (CCQE) and CCQE-like interactions of neutrinos and antineutrinos with nuclei. The approach is based on the standard relativistic Fermi-gas model and on the notion of neutrino energy dependent axial-vector mass of the nucleon, governed by a couple of adjustable parameters, one of which is the conventional charged-current axial-vector mass. The inelastic background contributions and final-state interactions are therewith simulated using GENIE 3 neutrino event generator. An extensive compariso…
We unify two widely different approaches to understanding the infrared behaviour of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), one essentially phenomenological, based on data, and the other computational, realised via quantum field equations in the continuum theory. Using the latter, we explain and calculate a process-independent running-coupling for QCD, a new type of effective charge that is an analogue of the Gell-Mann--Low effective coupling in quantum electrodynamics. The result is almost identical to the process-dependent effective charge defined via the Bjorken sum rule, which provides one of the mo…
In this paper we propose a method to compute the running top-Yukawa coupling in supersymmetric models with heavy mass spectrum based on the "running" and "decoupling" procedure. In order to enable this approach we compute the two-loop SUSY-QCD radiative corrections required in the decoupling process. The method has the advantage that large logarithmic corrections are automatically resummed through the Renormalization Group Equations. As phenomenological application we study the effects of this approach on the prediction of the lightest Higgs boson mass at three-loop accuracy. We observe a sign…

The remarkably small shear viscosity to entropy density ratio $η/s < 0.5$ of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is a key insight from heavy ion experiments. Nonetheless, the basic understanding of this `observable' still seems to be rudimentary, with existing perturbative QCD estimates suggesting $η/s > 1$, a view that we scrutinize here. In order to extrapolate the available perturbative approach to phenomenologically relevant temperatures, we consider carefully controllable higher-order corrections: We adapt the leading-order effective kinetic scheme (instead of the catchy next-to-leading log form…
We present a state-of-the-art determination of the complex valued static quark-antiquark potential at phenomenologically relevant temperatures around the deconfinement phase transition. Its values are obtained from non-perturbative lattice QCD simulations using spectral functions extracted via a novel Bayesian inference prescription. We find that the real part, both in a gluonic medium as well as in realistic QCD with light $u$, $d$ and $s$ quarks, lies close to the color singlet free energies in Coulomb gauge and shows Debye screening above the (pseudo) critical temperature $T_c$. The imagina…

The contribution from hadronic vacuum polarisation effects is responsible for a large fraction of the theoretical uncertainty in the running of the QED coupling. The current level of uncertainty has become a limitation for electroweak precision tests. We use lattice QCD simulations with two flavours of O$(a)$ improved Wilson fermions to determine the Adler function in a broad range of the momentum transfer $Q^2$. The running of the QED coupling, including valence contributions from $u$, $d$, $s$ and $c$ quarks, is compared to phenomenological results at intermediate $Q^2$ values. In the large …
In gauge-gravity duality, the heavy quark potential at finite temperature is usually calculated with the pure AdS background, which does not capture the renormalization group (RG) running in the gauge theory part. In addition, the potential does not contain any confining term in the deconfined phase. Following the Klebanov-Strassler geometry, we employ a geometry, which captures the RG flow similar to QCD, to obtain the heavy quark potential by analytically continuing the string configurations into the complex plane. In addition to the attractive terms, the obtained potential has confining ter…
We argue that the phenomenologically inferred ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density of the quark-gluon plasma, $η/\s < 0.5$ near the deconfinement temperature $T_c$, can be understood from perturbative QCD. To rebut the widespread, opposite view we first show that, and why, the existing leading order result in (fixed) coupling should not be further expanded in logarithms. Emphasizing then that the resummation mandatory for screening also settles the often neglected question of scale setting for the running coupling, we establish a temperature dependence of $η/\s$ which agrees well with c…
We perform a phenomenological analysis of the observable consequences on the extended scalar sector of the SMASH (Standard Model - Axion - Seesaw - Higgs portal inflation) framework. We solve the vacuum metastability problem in a suitable region of SMASH scalar parameter spaces and discuss the one-loop correction to triple Higgs coupling $λ_{HHH}$. We also find that the correct neutrino masses and mass squared differences and baryonic asymmetry of the universe can arise from this model and consider running of the Yukawa couplings of the model. In fact, we perform a full two-loop renormalizatio…
