We present a tree tensor-network impurity solver suited for general multiorbital systems. The network is constructed to efficiently capture the entanglement structure and symmetry of an impurity problem. The solver works directly on the real-time/frequency axis and generates spectral functions with energy-independent resolution of the order of one percent of the correlated bandwidth. Combined with an optimized representation of the impurity bath, it efficiently solves self-consistent dynamical mean-field equations and calculates various dynamical correlation functions for systems with off-diagonal Green's functions. For the archetypal correlated Hund's metal Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, we show that both the low-energy quasiparticle spectra related to the van Hove singularity and the high-energy atomic multiplet excitations can be faithfully resolved. In particular, we show that while the spin-orbit coupling has only minor effects on the orbital-diagonal one-particle spectral functions, it has a more profound impact on the low-energy spin and orbital response functions.
We present a continuous-time Monte Carlo impurity solver for multiorbital impurity models which combines a strong-coupling hybridization expansion and a weak-coupling expansion in the Hund's coupling parameter J. This double-expansion approach allows to treat the dominant density-density interactions U within the efficient segment representation. We test the approach for a two-orbital model with static interactions, and then explain how the double-expansion allows to simulate models with frequency dependent U(ω) and J(ω). The method is used to investigate spin state transitions in a toy model …
We present a numerically exact Inchworm Monte Carlo method for equilibrium multiorbital quantum impurity problems with general interactions and hybridizations. We show that the method, originally developed to overcome the dynamical sign problem in certain real-time propagation problems, can also overcome the sign problem as a function of temperature for equilibrium quantum impurity models. This is shown in several cases where the current method of choice, the continuous-time hybridization expansion, fails due to the sign problem. Our method therefore enables simulations of impurity problems as…
Recent experiments on Zn-doped 122-type iron pnictides, Ba(Fe$_{1-x-y}$Co$_y$Zn$_x$)$_2$As$_2$, are challenging our understanding of electron doping the 122s and the interplay between doping and impurity scattering. To resolve this enigma, we investigate the disorder effects of nonmagnetic Zn impurities in the strong (unitary) scattering limit on various properties of the system in the $s_{\pm}$-wave superconducting pairing state. The lattice Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation (BdG) is solved self-consistently based on a minimal two-orbital model with an extended range of impurity concentrations. W…
Hund's pairing refers to Cooper pairing generated by onsite interactions that become attractive due to large Hund's exchange $J$. This is possible in multiorbital systems even when all local bare interactions are repulsive, since attraction in specific channels are given by certain linear combinations of interaction parameters. On the other hand, pairing processes such as the exchange of spin fluctuations, are also present. We compare these two mechanisms on an equal footing using electronic bands appropriate for different classes of multiorbital systems over a wide range of interaction parame…
Using an imaginary-time matrix-product state (MPS) based quantum impurity solver we perform a realistic dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) calculation combined with density functional theory (DFT) for Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. We take the full Hubbard-Kanamori interactions and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) into account. The MPS impurity solver works at essentially zero temperature in the presence of SOC, a regime of parameters currently inaccessible to continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo (CTQMC) methods, due to a severe sign problem. We show that earlier results obtained at high temperature, namely that the …
The natural orbitals renormalization group (NORG) has previously been proposed as an efficient numerical method for solving zero-temperature properties of multisite and multiorbital quantum impurity systems. Here, we implement the NORG as an impurity solver for dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). In comparison with the exact diagonalization method, the NORG method can treat much more bath sites in an impurity model to which the DMFT maps a lattice model and can find accurate zero-temperature Matsubara and low-frequency retarded Green's functions. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this method…
We propose to combine the Trotter decomposition and a series expansion of the partition function for Hund's exchange coupling in a quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) algorithm for multiorbital systems that preserves spin and orbital rotational symmetries. This enables us to treat the Hund's (spin-flip and pair-hopping) terms, which is difficult in the conventional QMC method. To demonstrate this, we first apply the algorithm to study ferromagnetism in the two-orbital Hubbard model within the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The result reveals that the preservation of the SU(2) symmetry in Hund's exc…
Ti substituting Ru in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ in small concentrations induces incommensurate spin density wave order with a wave vector $\boldsymbol{Q} \simeq (2 π/3, 2 π/3)$ corresponding to the nesting vector of two out of three Fermi surface sheets. We consider a microscopic model for these two bands and analyze the correlation effects leading to magnetic order through non-magnetic Ti-doping. For this purpose we use a position dependent mean field approximation for the microscopic model and a phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau approach, which both deliver consistent results and allow us to examine the …
Motivated by the relevance of Hund's coupling in the context of multiorbital superconductors, we revisit the problem of a multiorbital Kondo impurity with Hund's interaction. Using dynamical large-N techniques, we propose an efficient approach that retains the essential physics at play, while providing a pathway to scalable quantum impurity solvers. We are able to follow the ground state, dynamic, and thermodynamic properties of this system over many decades of temperature. Our approach captures the emergence of large moments, and follows the stretched evolution of the physics down to their ex…
We study the interplay of crystal field splitting and Hund coupling in a two-orbital model which captures the essential physics of systems with two electrons or holes in the e_g shell. We use single site dynamical mean field theory with a recently developed impurity solver which is able to access strong couplings and low temperatures. The fillings of the orbitals and the location of phase boundaries are computed as a function of Coulomb repulsion, exchange coupling and crystal field splitting. We find that the Hund coupling can drive the system into a novel Mott insulating phase with vanishing…
We study the thermally driven spin state transition in a two-orbital Hubbard model with crystal field splitting, which provides a minimal description of the physics of LaCoO3. We employ the dynamical mean-field theory with quantum Monte-Carlo impurity solver. At intermediate temperatures we find a spin disproportionated phase characterized by checkerboard order of sites with small and large spin moments. The high temperature transition from the disproportionated to a homogeneous phase is accompanied by vanishing of the charge gap. With the increasing crystal-field splitting the temperature ran…
A framework is presented for modeling and understanding magnetic excitations in localized, intermediate coupling magnets where the interplay between spin-orbit coupling, magnetic exchange, and crystal field effects are known to create a complex landscape of unconventional magnetic behaviors and ground states. A spin-orbit exciton approach for modeling these excitations is developed based upon a Hamiltonian which explicitly incorporates single-ion crystalline electric field and spin exchange terms. This framework is then leveraged to understand a canonical Van Vleck $j\rm{_{eff}}=0$ singlet gro…
Motivated by recent discoveries of novel superconductors such as Na$_x$CoO$_2\cdot y$H$_2$O and Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, we analysize features of quasi-particle scattering due to impurities and interfaces for possible gapful $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$ and $p_x+ip_y$ Cooper pairing. A bound state appears near a local impurity, and a band of bound states form near an interface. We obtained analytically the bound state energy, and calculated the space and energy dependent local density of states resolvable by high-resolution scanning tunnelling microscopy. For comparison we also sketch results of impurity and s…
Motivated by the increasing number of systems featuring multiple bands at low energy, we address the Boltzmann approach to transport in a multiband weakly disordered noninteracting crystal subject to a small electric field. In general, the multiband structure leads to a considerable complication of the Boltzmann equation. Indeed, even in the presence of elastic impurity scattering, one needs to compute for each band and momentum the dressed velocities, which account for scattering events. Here we provide a semianalytical solution to the Boltzmann equation that reduces such a challenging numeri…
We present an implementation of the rotationally invariant slave boson technique as an impurity solver for density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT). Our approach provides explicit relations between quantities in the local correlated subspace treated with DMFT and the Bloch basis used to solve the DFT equations. In particular, we present an expression for the mass enhancement of the quasiparticle states in reciprocal space. We apply the method to the study of the electronic correlations in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ under anisotropic strain. We find that the spin-orbit coupling …

We analyze the full counting statistics of a multiorbital Kondo effect in a quantum dotwith the SU(N) symmetry in the framework of the renormalized perturbation theory. The current probability distribution function is calculated for an arbitrary dot-site Coulomb repulsion $U$ in the particle-hole symmetric case. The resulting cumulant up to the leading nonlinear term of applied bias voltages indicates two types of electron transfer, respectively carrying charge $e$ and $2e$, with different $N$-dependences. The cross correlation between different orbital currents shows exponential enhancement w…
The electronic structure around an impurity in spin triplet p-wave superconductors is studied by the Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory on a tight-binding model, where we have chosen $\sin{p_x}{+}{\rm i}\sin{p_y}$-wave or $\sin{(p_x+p_y)}{+}{\rm i}\sin{({-}p_x{+}p_y)}$-wave states which are considered to be candidates for the pairing state in Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$. We calculate the spontaneous current and the local density of states around the impurity and discuss the difference between the two types of pairing. We propose that it is possible to discriminate the two pairing states by studying the spatial…
By quantum Monte Carlo simulation of a realistic multiorbital Anderson impurity model, we study the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) of an Fe impurity in Au host metal. We show, for the first time, that the SOI is strongly renormalized by the quantum spin fluctuation. Based on this mechanism, we can explain why the gigantic spin Hall effect in Au with Fe impurities was observed in recent experiment, while it is not visible in the anomalous Hall effect. In addition, we show that the SOI is strongly renormalized by the Coulomb correlation U. Based on this picture, we can explain past discrepancies i…
We introduce a method to obtain the specific heat of quantum impurity models via a direct calculation of the impurity internal energy requiring only the evaluation of local quantities within a single numerical renormalization group (NRG) calculation for the total system. For the Anderson impurity model, we show that the impurity internal energy can be expressed as a sum of purely local static correlation functions and a term that involves also the impurity Green function. The temperature dependence of the latter can be neglected in many cases, thereby allowing the impurity specific heat, $C_{\…
Hund's coupling in multiorbital systems allows for the possibility of even-parity orbital-antisymmetric spin-triplet pairing, which can be stabilized by spin-orbit coupling (SOC). While this pairing expressed in the orbital basis is uniform and spin-triplet, it appears in the band basis as a pseudospin-singlet, with the momentum dependence determined by the SOC and the underlying triplet character remaining in the form of interband pairing active away from the Fermi energy. Here, we examine the role of momentum-dependent SOC in generating nontrivial pairing symmetries, as well as the hidden tr…
Hund metals have attracted attention in recent years due to their unconventional superconductivity, which supposedly originates from non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) properties of the normal state. When studying Hund metals using dynamical mean-field theory, one arrives at a self-consistent "Hund impurity problem" involving a multiorbital quantum impurity with nonzero Hund coupling interacting with a metallic bath. If its spin and orbital degrees of freedom are screened at different energy scales, $T_\mathrm{sp} < T_\mathrm{orb}$, the intermediate energy window is governed by a novel NFL fixed point, wh…
The dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) has become a standard technique for the study of strongly correlated models and materials overcoming some of the limitations of density functional approaches based on local approximations. An important step in this method involves the calculation of response functions of a multiorbital impurity problem which is related to the original model. Recently there has been considerable progress in the development of techniques based on the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and related matrix product states (MPS) implying a substantial improvement to pre…
