The first detection of gravitational waves from the binary neutron star merger GW170817 by the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration has provided fundamental new insights into the astrophysical site for r-process nucleosynthesis and on the nature of dense neutron-star matter. The detected gravitational wave signal depends upon the tidal distortion of the neutron stars as they approach merger. We report on relativistic numerical simulations of the approach to binary merger in the conformally flat, quasi-circular orbit approximation. We show that this event serves as a calibration to the quasi-circular approximation and a confirmation of the validity of the conformally flat approximation to the three-metric. We then examine how the detected chirp depends upon the adopted equation of state. This establishes a new efficient means to constrain the nuclear equation of state in binary neutron star mergers.
We consider the inspiral of black holes carrying U(1) charge that is not electromagnetic, but corresponds to some dark sector. In the weak-field, low-velocity regime, the components follow Keplerian orbits. We investigate how the orbital parameters evolve for dipole-dominated emission and find that the orbit quickly circularises, though not as efficiently as for a gravitationally dominated emission. We then regard circular orbits, and look for modifications in the gravitational waveform from the components carrying small charges. Taking this into account we populate the waveform with simplifie…
We study the stability of circular orbits in the background of a traversable wormhole (TWH) spacetime obtained as a solution of Einstein's field equations coupled conformally to a massless scalar field. The Lyapunov stability approach is employed to determine the stability of circular orbits (timelike and null) of non-spinning test particles around a TWH spacetime. In the case of timelike geodesics, the particle is confined to move in four different types of effective potentials depending on various values of the angular momentum L with both centrifugal and gravitational part. The effective po…
The spatially conformally flat approximation (CFA) is a viable method to deduce initial conditions for the subsequent evolution of binary neutron stars employing the full Einstein equations. Here we review the status of the original formulation of the CFA for the general relativistic hydrodynamic initial conditions of binary neutron stars. We illustrate the stability of the conformally flat condition on the hydrodynamics by numerically evolving ~100 quasi-circular orbits. We illustrate the use of this approximation for orbiting neutron stars in the quasi-circular orbit approximation to demonst…
Kaluza-Klein reduction of conformally flat spaces is considered for arbitrary dimensions. The corresponding equations are particularly elegant for the reduction from four to three dimensions. Assuming circular symmetry leads to explicit solutions which also arise from specific two-dimensional dilaton gravity actions.
The gravitational field of a stationary circular cosmic string loop ,externally supported against collapse, is investigated in the context of Brans-Dicke theory in the weak field approximation of the field equations. The solution is quasi-conformally related to the corresponding solution in Einstein's General Relativity(GR) and goes over to the corresponding solution in GR when the Brans-Dicke parameter $ω$ becomes infinitely large.
A new method is described for constructing initial data for a binary neutron-star (BNS) system in quasi-equilibrium circular orbit. Two formulations for non-conformally flat data, waveless (WL) and near-zone helically symmetric (NHS), are introduced; in each formulation, the Einstein-Euler system, written in 3+1 form on an asymptotically flat spacelike hypersurface, is exactly solved for all metric components, including the spatially non-conformally flat potentials, and for irrotational flow. A numerical method applicable to both formulations is explained with an emphasis on the imposition of …
(Abridged) By asymptotically matching a post-Newtonian (PN) metric to two tidally perturbed Schwarzschild metrics, we generate approximate initial data (in the form of a 4-metric) for a nonspinning black hole binary in a circular orbit. We carry out this matching through O(v^4) in the binary's orbital velocity v, so the resulting data are conformally curved. Far from the holes, we use the appropriate PN metric that accounts for retardation, which we construct using the highest-order PN expressions available to compute the binary's past history. The data set's uncontrolled remainders are thus O…
The detection of ~50 coalescing compact binaries with the Advanced LIGO and Virgo detectors has allowed us to test general relativity, constrain merger rates, and look for evidence of tidal effects, compact object spins, higher waveform modes, and black hole ringdowns. An effect that has not yet been confidently detected is binary eccentricity, which might be present in a small fraction of binaries formed dynamically. Here we discuss general limits on eccentricity that can, in-principle, be placed on all types of compact object binaries by a detector operating at the design sensitivity of Adva…
We determine the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) of binary neutron stars (BNSs) by performing dynamical simulations in full general relativity. Evolving quasiequilibrium (QE) binaries that begin at different separations, we bracket the location of the ISCO by distinguishing stable circular orbits from unstable plunges. We study Gamma=2 polytropes of varying compactions in both corotational and irrotational equal-mass binaries. For corotatonal binaries we find an ISCO orbital angular frequency somewhat smaller than that determined by applying turning-point methods to QE initial data. For…
We report on the first calculations of fully relativistic binary circular orbits to span a range of separation distances from the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO), deeply inside the strong field regime, to a distance ($\sim$ 200 km) where the system is accurately described by Newtonian dynamics. We consider a binary system composed of two identical corotating neutron stars, with 1.43 $M_\odot$ gravitational mass each in isolation. Using a conformally flat spatial metric we find solutions to the initial value equations that correspond to semi-stable circular orbits. At large distance, our…

A class of exact solutions of the gravitational field equations in the vacuum on the brane are obtained by assuming the existence of a conformal Killing vector field, with non-static and non-central symmetry. In this case the general solution of the field equations can be obtained in a parametric form in terms of the Bessel functions. The behavior of the basic physical parameters describing the non-local effects generated by the gravitational field of the bulk (dark radiation and dark pressure) is also considered in detail, and the equation of state satisfied at infinity by these quantities is…

Mergers of stellar-mass black holes on highly eccentric orbits are among the targets for ground-based gravitational-wave detectors, including LIGO, VIRGO, and KAGRA. These sources may commonly form through gravitational-wave emission in high velocity dispersion systems or through the secular Kozai-Lidov mechanism in triple systems. Gravitational waves carry information about the binaries' orbital parameters and source location. Using the Fisher matrix technique, we determine the measurement accuracy with which the LIGO-VIRGO-KAGRA network could measure the source parameters of eccentric binari…
We present a new approach to the problem of binary black holes in the pre-coalescence stage, i.e. when the notion of orbit has still some meaning. Contrary to previous numerical treatments which are based on the initial value formulation of general relativity on a (3-dimensional) spacelike hypersurface, our approach deals with the full (4-dimensional) spacetime. This permits a rigorous definition of the orbital angular velocity. Neglecting the gravitational radiation reaction, we assume that the black holes move on closed circular orbits, which amounts to endowing the spacetime with a helical …
We develop, test and compare new numerical and geometrical methods for improving the accuracy of extracting waveforms using characteristic evolution. The new numerical method involves use of circular boundaries to the stereographic grid patches which cover the spherical cross-sections of the outgoing null cones. We show how an angular version of numerical dissipation can be introduced into the characteristic code to damp the high frequency error arising form the irregular way the circular patch boundary cuts through the grid. The new geometric method involves use of the Weyl tensor component $…
The inspiral of a ``small'' ($μ\sim 1-100 M_\odot$) compact body into a ``large'' ($M \sim 10^{5-7} M_\odot$) black hole is a key source of gravitational radiation for the space-based gravitational-wave observatory LISA. The waves from such inspirals will probe the extreme strong-field nature of the Kerr metric. In this paper, I investigate the properties of a restricted family of such inspirals (the inspiral of circular, inclined orbits) with an eye toward understanding observable properties of the gravitational waves that they generate. Using results previously presented to calculate the eff…
We present results of an all-sky search in the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array (PPTA) Data Release 1 data set for continuous gravitational waves (GWs) in the frequency range from $5\times 10^{-9}$ to $2\times 10^{-7}$ Hz. Such signals could be produced by individual supermassive binary black hole systems in the early stage of coalescence. We phase up the pulsar timing array data set to form, for each position on the sky, two data streams that correspond to the two GW polarizations and then carry out an optimal search for GW signals on these data streams. Since no statistically significant GWs were …
We present results of numerical computations of quasiequilibrium sequences of binary neutron stars with zero vorticity, in the general relativistic framework. The Einstein equations are solved under the assumption of a conformally flat spatial 3-metric (Wilson-Mathews approximation). The evolution of the central density of each star is monitored as the orbit shrinks in response to gravitational wave emission. For a compactification ratio M/R=0.14, the central density remains rather constant (with a slight increase, below 0.1%) before decreasing. For a higher compactification ratio M/R=0.17 (i.…
We study the effect of torques on circular inspirals of intermediate-mass black hole binaries (IMBHBs) embedded in gas discs, wherein both BH masses are in the range $10^2$-$10^5~\rm{M}_\odot$, up to redshift $z = 10$. We focus on how torques impact the detected gravitational wave (GW) waveform in the frequency band of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) when the binary separation is within a few hundred Schwarzschild radii. For a sub-Eddington accretion disc with a viscosity coefficient $α=0.01$, surface density $Σ\approx10^5$ g cm$^{-2}$, and Mach number $\mathcal{M}_{\rm a}\approx…
The North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) project currently observes 43 pulsars using the Green Bank and Arecibo radio telescopes. In this work we use a subset of 17 pulsars timed for a span of roughly five years (2005--2010). We analyze these data using standard pulsar timing models, with the addition of time-variable dispersion measure and frequency-variable pulse shape terms. Within the timing data, we perform a search for continuous gravitational waves from individual supermassive black hole binaries in circular orbits using robust frequentist and Bayesian…
We study the advantage of the co-existence of future ground and space based gravitational wave detectors, in estimating the parameters of a binary coalescence. Using the post-Newtonian waveform for the inspiral of non-spinning neutron star-black hole pairs in circular orbits, we study how the estimates for chirp mass, symmetric mass ratio, and time and phase at coalescence are improved by combining the data from different space-ground detector pairs. Since the gravitational waves produced by binary coalescence also provide a suitable domain where we can study strong field gravity, we also stud…
We report on general relativistic calculations of quasiequilibrium configurations of binary neutron stars in circular orbits with zero vorticity. These configurations are expected to represent realistic situations as opposed to corotating configurations. The Einstein equations are solved under the assumption of a conformally flat spatial 3-metric (Wilson-Mathews approximation). The velocity field inside the stars is computed by solving an elliptical equation for the velocity scalar potential. Results are presented for sequences of constant baryon number (evolutionary sequences). Although the c…
Equilibria of binary neutron stars in close circular orbits are computed numerically in a waveless formulation: The full Einstein-relativistic-Euler system is solved on an initial hypersurface to obtain an asymptotically flat form of the 4-metric and an extrinsic curvature whose time derivative vanishes in a comoving frame. Two independent numerical codes are developed, and solution sequences that model inspiraling binary neutron stars during the final several orbits are successfully computed. The binding energy of the system near its final orbit deviates from earlier results of third post-New…
We present an algorithm for solving the general relativistic initial value equations for a corotating polytropic star in quasicircular orbit with a nonspinning black hole. The algorithm is used to obtain initial data for cases where the black hole mass is 1, 3, and 10 times larger than the mass of the star. By analyzing sequences of constant baryon mass, constant black hole mass initial data sets and carefully monitoring the numerical error, we find innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) configuration for these cases. While these quasiequilibrium, conformally flat sequences of initial data set…
We present a formalism for constructing quasi-equilibrium binary black hole initial data suitable for numerical evolution. We construct quasi-equilibrium models by imposing an approximate helical Killing symmetry appropriate for quasi-circular orbits. We use the sum of two Kerr-Schild metrics as our background metric, thereby improving on conformally flat backgrounds that do not accommodate rotating black holes and providing a horizon-penetrating lapse, convenient for implementing black hole excision. We set inner boundary conditions at an excision radius well inside the apparent horizon and c…
This paper reports on our effort in modeling realistic astrophysical neutron star binaries in general relativity. We analyze under what conditions the conformally flat quasiequilibrium (CFQE) approach can generate ``astrophysically relevant'' initial data, by developing an analysis that determines the violation of the CFQE approximation in the evolution of the binary described by the full Einstein theory. We show that the CFQE assumptions significantly violate the Einstein field equations for corotating neutron stars at orbital separations nearly double that of the innermost stable circular or…
Coalescing black hole (BH) binaries forming in the dense core of globular clusters (GCs) are expected to be one the brightest sources of gravitational wave (GW) radiation for the next generation of ground-based laser interferometers. Favorable conditions for merger are initiated by the Kozai resonance in which the gravitational interaction with a third distant object, typically another BH, induces quasi-periodic variations of the inner BH binary eccentricity. In this paper we perform high precision N-body simulations of the long term evolution of hierarchical BH triples and investigate the con…
We introduce a new template for the detection of gravitational waves from compact binary systems which is based on Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind. As well as having excellent convergence properties, these polynomials are also very closely related to the elusive minimax polynomial. In this study we have limited ourselves to the test-mass regime, where we model a test particle in a circular equatorial orbit around a Schwarzschild black hole. Our objective is to model the numerical gravitational wave flux function, starting with the post-Newtonian expansion from Black Hole Perturbation T…
We study the impact of eccentricity on gravitational-wave parameter estimation for binary neutron star systems. For signals with small eccentricity injected into the advanced LIGO sensitivity, we perform Bayesian parameter estimation using the circular waveform model and show how the recovered parameters can be biased from their true values, focusing on the intrinsic parameters the chirp mass ($M_c$), the symmetric mass ratio ($η$), and the tidal deformability ($\tildeλ$). By comparing the results between the Bayesian and the analytic Fisher-Cutler-Vallisneri (FCV) methods, we obtain the valid…
Gravitational waves are excellent tools to probe the foundations of General Relativity in the strongly dynamical and non-linear regime. One such foundation is Lorentz symmetry, which can be broken in the gravitational sector by the existence of a preferred time direction, and thus, a preferred frame at each spacetime point. This leads to a modification in the orbital decay rate of binary systems, and also in the generation and chirping of their associated gravitational waves. We here study whether waves emitted in the late, quasi-circular inspiral of non-spinning, neutron star binaries can pla…
The dynamical evolution of binaries of intermediate-massive black holes (IMBHs, massive black holes with a mass ranging between $10^2$ and $10^4 M_{\odot}$) in stellar clusters has recently received an increasing amount of attention. This is at least partially due to the fact that if the binary is hard enough to evolve to the phase at which it will start emitting gravitational waves (GWs) efficiently, there is a good probability that it will be detectable by future space-borne detectors like LISA. We study this evolution in the presence of rotation in the cluster. The eccentricity is strongly …
Binary systems of massive black holes will be detectable by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) throughout the entire Universe. Observations of gravitational waves from this class of sources will have important repercussions on our understanding of the behaviour of gravity in the highly non-linear relativistic regime, the distribution and interaction of massive black holes at high redshift and the formation and evolution of cosmic structures. It is therefore important to address how accurately LISA can measure the source parameters and explore the implications for astronomy and cosmo…

We consider the influence of potential quark matter existing at high densities in neutron star interiors on gravitational waves (GW) emitted in a binary neutron star merger event. Two types of equations of state (EoS) at zero temperatures are used, one describing pure nuclear matter, the other nuclear matter with a phase transition to quark matter at very high densities. Binary equilibrium sequences close to the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) are calculated to determine the GW frequencies just before merger. It is found that EoS effects begin to play a role for gravitational masses lar…

We have searched for continuous gravitational wave (CGW) signals produced by individually resolvable, circular supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs) in the latest EPTA dataset, which consists of ultra-precise timing data on 41 millisecond pulsars. We develop frequentist and Bayesian detection algorithms to search both for monochromatic and frequency-evolving systems. None of the adopted algorithms show evidence for the presence of such a CGW signal, indicating that the data are best described by pulsar and radiometer noise only. Depending on the adopted detection algorithm, the 95\% upper …

Targeted signal models include fallback accretion onto neutron stars, broadband chirps from innermost stable circular orbit waves around rotating black holes, eccentric inspiral-merger-ringdown compact binary coal…
