(Abridged) By asymptotically matching a post-Newtonian (PN) metric to two tidally perturbed Schwarzschild metrics, we generate approximate initial data (in the form of a 4-metric) for a nonspinning black hole binary in a circular orbit. We carry out this matching through O(v^4) in the binary's orbital velocity v, so the resulting data are conformally curved. Far from the holes, we use the appropriate PN metric that accounts for retardation, which we construct using the highest-order PN expressions available to compute the binary's past history. The data set's uncontrolled remainders are thus O(v^5) throughout the timeslice; we also generate an extension to the data set that has uncontrolled remainders of O(v^6) in the purely PN portion of the timeslice (i.e., not too close to the holes). The resulting data are smooth, since we join all the metrics together by smoothly interpolating between them. We perform this interpolation using transition functions constructed to avoid introducing excessive additional constraint violations. Due to their inclusion of tidal deformations and outgoing radiation, these data should substantially reduce the initial spurious ("junk") radiation observed in current simulations that use conformally flat initial data. Such reductions in the nonphysical components of the initial data will be necessary for simulations to achieve the accuracy required to supply Advanced LIGO and LISA with the templates necessary for parameter estimation.
We build the general conformally invariant linear wave operator for a free, symmetric, second-rank tensor field in a d-dimensional ($d\geqslant 2$) metric manifold, and explicit the special case of maximally symmetric spaces. Under the assumptions made, this conformally invariant wave operator is unique. The corresponding conformally invariant wave equation can be obtained from a Lagrangian which is explicitly given. We discuss how our result compares to previous works, in particular we hope to clarify the situation between conflicting results.
We present a black hole effect by strategically leveraging a conformal mapping in elastic continuum with curved-space framework, which is less stringent compared to a Schwarzschild model transformed to isotropic refractive index profiles. In the conformal map approach, the 2D point singularity associated to the black hole effect is accomplished by physical plates with near-to-zero thickness. The analog gravity around the singularity results in highly confined energy and lagged timings within a branch cut of the conformal map. These effects are quantified both numerically and experimentally in …
A massive scalar field in a curved spacetime can propagate along the light cone, a causal pathology, which can, in principle, be eliminated only if the scalar couples conformally to the Ricci curvature of spacetime. This property mandates conformal coupling for the field driving inflation in the early universe. During slow-roll inflation, this coupling can cause super-acceleration and, as a signature, a blue spectrum of primordial gravitational waves.
In a previous work [S. Rahbardehghan et al. in Phys. Lett. B 750, 627 (2015)], we considered a simple brane-world model; a single $4$-dimensional brane embedded in a $5$-dimensional de Sitter (dS) space-time. Then, by including a conformally coupled scalar field in the bulk, we studied the induced Casimir energy-momentum tensor. Technically, the Krein-Gupta-Bleuler (KGB) quantization scheme as a covariant and renormalizable quantum field theory in dS space was used to perform the calculations. In the present paper, we generalize this study to a less idealized, but physically motivated, scenari…
We present a method to construct conformally curved initial data for charged black hole binaries with spin on arbitrary orbits. We generalize the superposed Kerr-Schild, extended conformal thin sandwich construction from [Lovelace et al., Phys. Rev. D {78}, 084017 (2008)] to use Kerr-Newman metrics for the superposed black holes and to solve the electromagnetic constraint equations. We implement the construction in the pseudospectral code SGRID. The code thus provides a complementary and completely independent excision-based construction, compared to the existing charged black hole initial dat…
We study the compatibility of the AdS/CFT duality with the bulk and boundary causality, and derive a conformally invariant averaged null energy condition (CANEC) for quantum field theories in 3 and 5-dimensional curved boundaries. This is the generalization of the averaged null energy condition (ANEC) in Minkowski spacetime to curved boundaries, where null energy is averaged along the null line with appropriate weight for conformal invariance. For this purpose we take, as our guiding principle, the no-bulk-shortcut theorem of Gao and Wald, which essentially asserts that when going from one poi…
This paper extends to the case of charged rotating black holes the conformally stationary, axisymmetric, conformally separable solutions presented for uncharged rotating black holes in a companion paper. In the present paper, the collisionless fluid accreted by the black hole may be charged. The charge of the black hole is determined self-consistently by the charge accretion rate. As in the uncharged case, hyper-relativistc counter-streaming between ingoing and outgoing streams drives inflation at (just above) the inner horizon, followed by collapse. If both ingoing and outgoing streams are ch…
(Abridged) A solution is obtained for the interior structure of an uncharged rotating black hole that accretes a collisionless fluid. The solution is conformally stationary, axisymmetric, and conformally separable, possessing a conformal Killing tensor. Hyper-relativistic counter-streaming between collisionless ingoing and outgoing streams drives inflation at (just above) the inner horizon, followed by collapse. As ingoing and outgoing streams approach the inner horizon, they focus into twin narrow beams directed along the ingoing and outgoing principal null directions, regardless of the initi…
We consider the fluid dual of $(d+2)$-dimensional vacuum Einstein equation either with or without a cosmological constant. The background solutions admit black hole event horizons and the spatial sections of the horizons are conformally flat. Therefore, a $d$-dimensional flat Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^d$ is contained in the conformal class of the spatial section of the black hole horizon. A compressible, forced, stationary and viscous fluid system can be constructed on the product (Newtonian) spacetime $\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{E}^d$ as the lowest order fluctuation modes around such black hol…
Static, charged black holes in the presence of a negative cosmological constant and with a planar horizon are found in four dimensions. The solutions have scalar secondary hair. We claim that these constitute the planar version of the Martinez-Troncoso-Zanelli black holes, only known up to now for a curved event horizon in four dimensions. Their planar version is rendered possible due to the presence of two, equal and homogeneously distributed, axionic charges dressing the flat horizon. The solutions are presented in the conformal and minimal frame and their basic properties and thermodynamics…
We review a recently proposed effective Tolman temperature and present its applications to various gravitational systems. In the Unruh state for the evaporating black holes, the free-fall energy density is found to be negative divergent at the horizon, which is in contrast to the conventional calculations performed in the Kruskal coordinates. We resolve this conflict by invoking that the Kruskcal coordinates could be no longer proper coordinates at the horizon. In the Hartle-Hawking-Israel state, despite the negative finite proper energy density at the horizon, the Tolman temperature is diverg…
We review the (2+1)-dimensional Baunados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black hole solution in conformally invariant gravity, uplifted to (3+1)-dimensional spacetime. As matter content we use a scalar-gauge field. The metric is written as $g_{μν}=ω^2\tilde g_{μν}$, where the {\it dilaton field} $ω$ contains all the scale dependencies and where $\tilde g_{μν}$ represents the "un-physical" spacetime. A numerical solution is presented and shows how the dilaton can be treated on equal footing with the scalar field. The location of the apparent horizon and ergo-surface depends critically on the parameters and …
This paper presents a concise derivation of a new set of solutions for the interior structure of accreting, rotating black holes. The solutions are conformally stationary, axisymmetric, and conformally separable. Hyper-relativistic counter-streaming between freely-falling collisionless ingoing and outgoing streams leads to mass inflation at the inner horizon, followed by collapse. The solutions fail at an exponentially tiny radius, where the rotational motion of the streams becomes comparable to their radial motion. The papers provide a fully nonlinear, dynamical solution for the interior stru…
A curved static de Sitter-like metric is analyzed. The source of curvature is rooted from a constant stress tensor with positive energy density and negative pressures. All the curvature invariants are constant everywhere and the geometry is conformally flat. The horizon surface gravity equals the parameter $ω$ from the metric that is also interpreted as an angular velocity. The Tolman-Komar gravitational energy is investigated. One finds that the horizon entropy satisfies the relation $S = A_{H}/4$, as for the black hole horizon.
Initial data for numerical evolutions of binary-black holes have been dominated by "conformally flat" (CF) data (i.e., initial data where the conformal background metric is chosen to be flat) because they are easy to construct. However, CF initial data cannot simulate nearly extremal spins, while more complicated "conformally curved" initial data (i.e., initial data in which the background metric is \emph{not} explicitly chosen to be flat), such as initial data where the spatial metric is chosen to be proportional to a weighted superposition of two Kerr-Schild (SKS) black holes can. Here we es…
The evaporation of four-dimensional spherically symmetric black holes is presented in the framework of quantum field theory in curved spacetimes and semiclassical gravity. It is discussed how the evaporation process can be sourced by the presence of the trace anomaly of a massless, conformally coupled scalar field outside the apparent horizon of the black hole.
We investigate quantum effects on topological black hole space-times within the framework of quantum field theory on curved space-times. Considering a quantum scalar field, we extend a recent mode-sum regularization prescription for the computation of the renormalized vacuum polarization to asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes with nonspherical event horizon topology. In particular, we calculate the vacuum polarization for a massless, conformally-coupled scalar field on a four-dimensional topological Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter black hole background, comparing our results with those for …
We examine an Unruh-DeWitt particle detector coupled to a scalar field in three-dimensional curved spacetime, within first-order perturbation theory. We first obtain a causal and manifestly regular expression for the instantaneous transition rate in an arbitrary Hadamard state. We then specialise to the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black hole and to a massless conformally coupled field in the Hartle-Hawking vacuum. A co-rotating detector responds thermally in the expected local Hawking temperature, while a freely-falling detector shows no evidence of thermality in regimes that we are able to pro…
We study the quantum radiation from a curved background using scalar observables constructed from the (1+1) dimensional renormalized stress-energy tensor (RSET). We compute energy density $\cal U$, flux $\cal F$ and pressure $\cal P$ for an arbitrary collapse scenario and an arbitrary observer. The results show a clear structure: $\cal F - \cal U$ represents the collapse-independent ingoing modes, $\cal F + \cal U$ represents the collapse-dependent outgoing modes and $\cal P - \cal U$ represents the trace anomaly. We also compute the observables constructed from the perception renormalized str…
We study the neutrino scattering off a rotating black hole with a realistic accretion disk permeated by an intrinsic magnetic field. Neutrino trajectories in curved spacetime as well as the particle spin evolution in dense matter of an accretion disk and in the magnetic field are accounted for exactly. We obtain the fluxes of outgoing ultrarelativistic neutrinos taking into account the change of the neutrino polarization owing to spin oscillations. Using the conservative value of the neutrino magnetic moment and realistic radial distributions of the matter density and the magnetic field streng…
