We study the quantum radiation from a curved background using scalar observables constructed from the (1+1) dimensional renormalized stress-energy tensor (RSET). We compute energy density $\cal U$, flux $\cal F$ and pressure $\cal P$ for an arbitrary collapse scenario and an arbitrary observer. The results show a clear structure: $\cal F - \cal U$ represents the collapse-independent ingoing modes, $\cal F + \cal U$ represents the collapse-dependent outgoing modes and $\cal P - \cal U$ represents the trace anomaly. We also compute the observables constructed from the perception renormalized stress-energy tensor (PeRSET). We find they have the same collapse-dependent contribution comparing to their RSET-related counterparts. For free-falling observers, in particular, the PeRSET-related observables are the same as the corresponding RSET-related ones, except the energy densities differ by the trace anomaly.
We analyze the frequency shift of photons propagating on an asymptotically flat spacetime describing a collapsing, spherical dust cloud. We focus on the case where the interaction of the photons with the matter can be neglected. Under fairly general assumptions on the initial data characterizing the collapse, we show that photons with zero angular momentum which travel from past to future null infinity, crossing the collapsing cloud through its center, are always redshifted with respect to stationary observers. We compute this redshift as a function of proper time of a distant stationary obser…
In the present work, gravitational collapse of an inhomogeneous spherical star model, consisting of inhomogeneous dust fluid (dark matter) in the background of dark energy is considered. The collapsing process is examined first separately for both dark matter and dark energy and then under the combined effect of dark matter and dark energy with or without interaction. The dark energy is considered in the form of perfect fluid and both marginally and non-marginally bound cases are considered for the collapsing model. Finally dark energy in the form of anisotropic fluid is investigated and it is…
In this work, we discuss observable characteristics of the radiation emitted from a surface of a collapsing object. We study a simplified model in which a radiation of massless particles has a sharp in time profile and it happens at the surface at the same moment of comoving time. Since the radiating surface has finite size the observed radiation will occur during some finite time. Its redshift and bending angle are affected by the strong gravitational field. We obtain a simple expression for the observed flux of the radiation as a function of time. To find an explicit expression for the flux …
Cosmological solutions with a homogeneous Yang-Mills field which oscillates and passes between topologically distinct vacua are discussed. These solutions are used to model the collapsing Bartnik-McKinnon gravitational sphaleron and the associated anomalous production of fermions. The Dirac equation is analyzed in these backgrounds. It is shown explicitly that a fermion energy level crosses from the negative to positive energy spectrum as the gauge field evolves between the topologically distinct vacua. The cosmological solutions are also generalized to include an axion field.
The problem of a spherically symmetric charged thin shell of dust collapsing gravitationally into a charged Reissner-Nordström black hole in $d$ spacetime dimensions is studied within the theory of general relativity. Static charged shells in such a background are also analyzed. First a derivation of the equation of motion of such a shell in a $d$-dimensional spacetime is given. Then a proof of the cosmic censorship conjecture in a charged collapsing framework is presented, and a useful constraint which leads to an upper bound for the rest mass of a charged shell with an empty interior is deri…
The problem of how space-time responds to gravitating quantum matter in full quantum gravity has been one of the main questions that any program of quantization of gravity should address. Here we analyze this issue by considering the quantization of a collapsing null shell coupled to spherically symmetric loop quantum gravity. We show that the constraint algebra of canonical gravity is Abelian both classically and when quantized using loop quantum gravity techniques. The Hamiltonian constraint is well defined and suitable Dirac observables characterizing the problem were identified at the quan…
We study the motion of thin-shell bubbles and their tunneling in anti de Sitter (AdS) background. We are interested in the case when the outside of a shell is a Schwarzschild-AdS space (false vacuum) and the inside of it is an AdS space with a lower vacuum energy (true vacuum). If a collapsing true vacuum bubble is created, classically it will form a Schwarzschild-AdS black hole. However, this collapsing bubble can tunnel to a bouncing bubble that moves out to spatial infinity. Then, although the classical causal structure of a collapsing true vacuum bubble has the singularity and the event ho…
The evolution of timelike geodesic congruences in a spherically symmetric, nonstatic, inhomogeneous spacetime representing gravitational collapse of a massless scalar field is studied. We delineate how initial values of the expansion, rotation and shear of a congruence, as well as the spacetime curvature, influence the global behavior and focusing properties of a family of trajectories. Under specific conditions, the expansion scalar is shown to exhibit a finite jump (from negative to positive value) before focusing eventually occurs. This nonmonotonic behavior of the expansion, observed in ou…
The present paper deals with the gravitational collapse of an inhomogeneous spherical star consisting of dust fluid in the background of dark energy components with linear equation of state. We discussed the development of apparent horizon to investigate the black-hole formation in gravitational collapsing process. The collapsing process is examined first separately for dust cloud and dark energy and then under the combined effect of dust interacting with dark energy. It is obtained that when only dust cloud or dark energy is present the collapse leads to the formation of black-hole under cert…
The gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric star, made of a dust fluid, $ρ_{DM}$, in a background of dark energy, $p = wρ,\; (w < -1/3)$, is studied. It is found that when only dark energy is present, black holes are {\em never} formed. When both of them are present, black holes can be formed, due to the condensation of the dust fluid. Initially the dust fluid may not play an important role, but, as time increases, it will dominate the collapse and finally leads to formation of black holes. This result remains true even when the interaction between the dust fluid and dark energy does…
Black hole radiation from an infinitesimally thin massive collapsing shell, possessing a global monopole charge, which in turn leads to a Schwarzschild black hole with a global monopole charge has been shown to be processed by a unitary evolution. The exterior metric of the collapsing shell is described by the global monopole (GM) metric. The analysis is performed using the Wheeler-deWitt formalism which gave rise to a Schrödinger-like wave equation. Existence of unitarity is confirmed from two independent lines of approach. Firstly, by showing that the trace of the square of the density matri…
Gravitational collapse of radiation in an anti-de Sitter background is studied. For the spherical case, the collapse proceeds in much the same way as in the Minkowski background, i.e., massless naked singularities may form for a highly inhomogeneous collapse, violating the cosmic censorship, but not the hoop conjecture. The toroidal, cylindrical and planar collapses can be treated together. In these cases no naked singularity ever forms, in accordance with the cosmic censorship. However, since the collapse proceeds to form toroidal, cylindrical or planar black holes, the hoop conjecture in an …
We discuss a model describing exactly a thin spherically symmetric shell of matter with zero rest mass. We derive the reduced formulation of this system in which the variables are embeddings, their conjugate momenta, and Dirac observables. A non-perturbative quantum theory of this model is then constructed, leading to a unitary dynamics. As a consequence of unitarity, the classical singularity is fully avoided in the quantum theory.
A star collapsing gravitationally into a black hole emits a flux of radiation, known as Hawking radiation. When the initial state of a quantum field on the background of the star, is placed in the Unruh vacuum in the far past, then in the exterior Hawking radiation corresponds to a flux of positive energy radiation travelling outwards from near the surface to future infinity. Based on pair creation, the evaporation of the collapsing star can be equivalently described by the absorption of an ingoing negative energy flux of radiation travelling towards the center of the star. Here, we are intere…
In Ref. [1, 2] a formalism to deal with high-order perturbations of a general spherical background was developed. In this article, we apply it to the particular case of a perfect fluid background. We have expressed the perturbations of the energy-momentum tensor at any order in terms of the perturbed fluid's pressure, density and velocity. In general, these expressions are not linear and have sources depending on lower order perturbations. For the second-order case we make the explicit decomposition of these sources in tensor spherical harmonics. Then, a general procedure is given to evolve th…
We consider the quantum vacuum effects of the massless scalar fields that are non-minimally coupled to the background geometry of a collapsing homogeneous ball of dust. It is shown that for a definite range of coupling constants, there are repulsive quantum vacuum effects, capable of stopping the collapse process inside the black hole and precluding the formation of singularity. The final fate of the collapse will be a black hole with no singularity, inside which the matter stays balanced. The density of the final static matter will be close to the Planck density. We show that the largest poss…
The dynamics of collapsing and expanding cylindrically symmetric gravitational and matter fields with lightlike wave-fronts is studied in General Relativity, using the Barrabes-Israel method. As an application of the general formulae developed, the collapse of a matter field that satisfies the condition R_{AB}g^{AB} = 0, (A, B = z, phi), in an otherwise flat spacetime background is studied. In particular, it is found that the gravitational collapse of a purely gravitational wave or a null dust fluid cannot be realized in a flat spacetime background. The studies are further specified to the col…
In this paper, we study the equation of circular loops with time-dependant tension in the BTZ black hole background. We obtain various cases where cosmic string loops finally collapse to form black holes. Also, we study effect of the BTZ black hole mass and angular momentum on the evolution of cosmic string loops. We find the critical values of initial radii as a limit for the cosmic string loops collapsing to form black holes.
In this paper, we aim to investigate the effects of the anisotropy on the scale-invariant power spectrum considering the matter-dominated collapsing universe as background and look for the deviations from this scale invariance. Having set up this background, we consider a massless scalar field and work out the correlations, first by using the perturbative approach in which the anisotropic background is approximated with an effective isotropic metric represented by the metric of matter dominated collapsing universe, second by directly solving the field equation numerically, and then obtain the …
We investigate the evolution of non-adiabatic collapse of a shear-free spherically symmetric stellar configuration with anisotropic stresses accompanied with radial heat flux. The collapse begins from a curvature singularity with infinite mass and size on an inhomogeneous space-time background. The collapse is found to proceed without formation of an even horizon to singularity when the collapsing configuration radiates all its mass energy. The impact of inhomogeneity on various parameters of the collapsing stellar configuration is examined in some specific space-time backgrounds.
We study gravitationally collapsing models of pressureless dust, fluids with pressure, and the generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG) shell in (2+1)-dimensional spacetimes. Various collapse scenarios are investigated under a variety of the background configurations such as anti-de Sitter(AdS) black hole, de Sitter (dS) space, flat and AdS space with a conical deficit. As with the case of a disk of dust, we find that the collapse of a dust shell coincides with the Oppenheimer-Snyder type collapse to a black hole provided the initial density is sufficiently large. We also find -- for all types of shell…
We show that the cosmological constant at late time places a bound on the entropy of microwave background radiation deposited in the future event horizon of a given observer, $S\leq S_{Λ_0}^{3/4}$. This bound is independent of the energy scale of reheating and the FRW evolution after reheating. We also discuss why the entropy of microwave background in our observable universe has its present value.
We investigated the behavior of an open isotropic universe generated by a scalar field which couples with background curvature nonminimally with the coupling constant $ξ$. In particular we focus on the situation where the initial value for the scalar field $ϕ_{\rm in}$ is greater than the critical value ${\hat ϕ}_c$=${m_p}/{\sqrt{8πξ(1-6ξ)}}$. The behavior is similar to an open de Sitter universe with $k=-1$ with a negative cosmological constant $Λ<0$. It is found that the universe will collapse eventually to a singularity and thus has a finite extent in time in the future. Furthermore, there …
We study the growth of fluctuations in collapsing cosmologies, extending old work of Lifshitz and Khalatnikov. As examples of systems where the fluctuations have a different composition than the background we study scalar fields with general improvement terms. Fluctuations always grow, and often dominate the homogeneous background. We argue that even for very dilute fluctuations, scattering processes inevitably lead to a dense gas of black holes. This leads us to hypothesize that the generic final state of a Big Crunch is described by a collapsing $p=ρ$ FRW cosmology. We conjecture that the bl…
We have shown analytically that radiation from a collapsing shell which leads to a charged black hole, whose exterior is described by the RN (Reissner-Nordström) metric (and hence the background spacetime is non-globally hyperbolic), is processed with a unitary evolution. For the analysis, we have used the Wheeler-deWitt formalism which in turn gave rise to a Schrödinger-like wave equation. We showed the existence of unitarity by proving that the trace of the squared density matrix of the outgoing radiation, from a quantized massless scalar field, is unity and that the conservation of probabil…
We address questions regarding construction and implications of gauge-invariant "dressed" observables in nontrivial background geometries such as that of a black hole. Formally, such observables can be constructed, e.g. by locating points with geodesics launched from infinity. However, practical complications arise in non-trivial geometries, and in particular for observables behind black hole horizons. Greater simplicity can be achieved by considering null constructions where the dressing lies along a null geodesic, or null surface such as a cone. We first investigate basic properties of these…
We construct approximate solutions that will describe the last stage of cylindrically symmetric gravitational collapse of dust fluid. Just before the spacetime singularity formation, the speed of the dust fluid might be almost equal to the speed of light by gravitational acceleration. Therefore the analytic solution describing the dynamics of cylindrical null dust might be the crudest approximate solution of the last stage of the gravitational collapse. In this paper, we regard this null dust solution as a background and perform `high-speed approximation' to know the gravitational collapse of …
In the quantum treatment of collapsing matter, a viable mode analysis is supposed to give information regarding emission during the collapse. Nevertheless, partly owing to operator ordering ambiguities involved in a typical quantum gravity analysis, the availability of such well-defined modes is not guaranteed. We study the mode decomposition of the unitarily evolving wave packet constructed for the quantum model of spherically symmetric dust collapsing in a marginally bound Lema\^ıtre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) model. We identify the observable depicting mode decomposition, and using the freedom of o…
We study here the gravitational collapse of a matter cloud with a non-vanishing tangential pressure in the presence of a non-zero cosmological term. Conditions for bounce and singularity formation are derived for the model. It is also shown that when the tangential pressures vanish, the bounce and singularity conditions reduce to that of the dust case studied earlier. The collapsing interior is matched with an exterior which is asymptotically de Sitter or anti de Sitter, depending on the sign of cosmological constant. The junction conditions for matching the cloud to exterior are specified. Th…
For an effective field theory in the background of an evaporating black hole with spherical symmetry, we consider non-renormalizable interactions and their relevance to physical effects. The background geometry is determined by the semi-classical Einstein equation for an uneventful horizon where the vacuum energy-momentum tensor is small for freely falling observers. Surprisingly, after Hawking radiation appears, the transition amplitude from the Unruh vacuum to certain multi-particle states grows exponentially with time for a class of higher-derivative operators after the collapsing matter en…
Gravitational collapse of non-spherical symmetric matter leads inevitably to non-static external spacetimes. It is shown here that gravitational collapse of matter with toroidal topology in a toroidal anti-de Sitter background proceeds to form a toroidal black hole. According to the analytical model presented, the collapsing matter absorbs energy in the form of radiation (be it scalar, neutrinos, electromagnetic, or gravitational) from the exterior spacetime. Upon decompactification of one or two coordinates of the torus one gets collapsing solutions of cylindrical or planar matter onto black …
In the functional Schrodinger formalism, we obtain the wave function describing collapsing dust in an anti-de Sitter background, as seen by a co-moving observer, by mapping the resulting variable mass Schrodinger equation to that of the quantum isotonic oscillator. Using this wave function, we perform a causal de Broglie-Bohm analysis, and obtain the corresponding quantum potential. We construct a bouncing geometry via a disformal transformation, incorporating quantum effects. We derive the external solution that matches with this smoothly, and is also quantum corrected. Due to a pressure term…
We study the time evolution of the Misner-Sharp mass and the apparent horizon for gravitational collapse of a massless scalar field in the $AdS_{5}$ space-time for both cases of narrow and broad waves by numerically solving the Einstein's equations coupled to a massless scalar field. This is done by relying on the full dynamics of the collapse including the concept of the dynamical horizon. It turns out that the Misner-Sharp mass is everywhere constant except for a rapid change across a thin shell defined by the density profile of the collapsing wave. By studying the evolution of the apparent …
An approach to black hole quantization is proposed wherein it is assumed that quantum coherence is preserved. A consequence of this is that the Penrose diagram describing gravitational collapse will show the same topological structure as flat Minkowski space. After giving our motivations for such a quantization procedure we formulate the background field approximation, in which particles are divided into "hard" particles and "soft" particles. The background space-time metric depends both on the in-states and on the out-states. We present some model calculations and extensive discussions. In pa…
The status of canonical reduction for metric and tetrad gravity in space-times of the Christodoulou-Klainermann type, where the ADM energy rules the time evolution, is reviewed. Since in these space-times there is an asymptotic Minkowski metric at spatial infinity, it is possible to define a Hamiltonian linearization in a completely fixed (non harmonic) 3-orthogonal gauge without introducing a background metric. Post-Minkowskian background-independent gravitational waves are obtained as solutions of the linearized Hamilton equations.
Rotation angle of the plane of polarization of the distant galactic radio waves has been estimated in a string inspired axion-dilaton background. It is found that the axion, dual to the field strength of the second rank antisymmetric massless Kalb-Ramond field in the string spectrum, produces a wavelength independent optical rotation which is much larger than that produced by the dilaton. Detection of such rotation has been reported in some recent cosmological experiments. The observed value has been compared with our estimated theoretical value following various cosmological constraints. The e…
A piecewise Tolman-Bondi-Lemaitre (TBL) cell-model for the universe incorporating local collapsing and expanding inhomogeneities is presented here. The cell-model is made up of TBL underdense and overdense spherical regions surrounded by an intermediate region of TBL shells embedded in an expanding universe. The cell-model generalizes the Friedmann as well as Einstein-Straus swiss-cheese models and presents a number of advantages over other models, and in particular the time evolution of the cosmological inhomogeneities is now incorporated within the scheme. Important problem of gravitational …
In the background of a gravitational collapse, we compute the transition amplitudes for the creation of particles for distant observers due to higher-derivative interactions in addition to Hawking radiation. The amplitudes grow exponentially with time and become of order 1 when the collapsing matter is about a Planck length outside the horizon. As a result, the effective theory breaks down at the scrambling time, invalidating its prediction of Hawking radiation. Planckian physics comes into play to decide the fate of black-hole evaporation.
A gravitationally collapsed object can bounce-out from its horizon via a tunnelling process that violates the classical equations in a finite region. Since tunnelling is a non-perturbative phenomenon, it cannot be described in terms of quantum fluctuations around a classical solution and a background-free formulation of quantum gravity is needed to analyze it. Here we use Loop Quantum Gravity to compute the amplitude for this process, in a first approximation. The amplitude determines the tunnelling time as a function of the mass. This is the key information to evaluate the astrophysical relev…
In this paper we will highlight how a simple vacuum energy dominated inflection-point inflation can match the current data from cosmic microwave background radiation, and predict large primordial tensor to scalar ratio, $r \sim \mathcal{O}(10^{-3}-10^{-2})$, with observable second order gravitational wave background, which can be potentially detectable from future experiments, such as DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (DECIGO), Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (eLISA), Cosmic Explorer (CE), and Big Bang Observatory (BBO).
We consider the quantization of a massless scalar field, using the geometric optics approximation, in the background spacetime of a collapsing spherical self-similar Vaidya star, which forms a black hole or a naked singularity. We show that the outgoing radiation flux of the quantized scalar field diverges on the Cauchy horizon. The spectrum of the produced scalar partcles is non-thermal when the background develops a naked singularity. These results are analogous to those obtained for the scalar quantization on a self-similar dust cloud.
Black holes in certain modified gravity theories that contain a scalar field coupled to curvature invariants are known to possess (monopole) scalar hair while non-black-hole spacetimes (like neutron stars) do not. Therefore, as a neutron star collapses to a black hole, scalar hair must grow until it settles to the stationary black hole solution with (monopole) hair. In this paper, we study this process in detail and show that the growth of scalar hair is tied to the appearance and growth of the event horizon (before an apparent horizon forms), which forces scalar modes that would otherwise (in…
In conventional field theories, the emission of Hawking radiation in the background of a collapsing star requires transplanckian energy fluctuations. These fluctuations are encoded in the weak values of the energy-momentum operator constructed from matrix elements between both -in and -out states. It is argued that taming of these weak values by back-reaction may lead to geometrical backgrounds which are also build from weak values of the gravitational field operators. This leads to different causal histories of the black hole as reconstructed by observers crossing the horizon at different tim…
Our universe may have formed via bubble nucleation in an eternally-inflating background. Furthermore, the background may have a compact dimension--the modulus of which tunnels out of a metastable minimum during bubble nucleation--which subsequently grows to become one of our three large spatial dimensions. Then the reduced symmetry of the background is equivalent to anisotropic initial conditions in our bubble universe. We compute the inflationary spectrum in such a scenario and, as a first step toward understanding the effects of anisotropy, project it onto spherical harmonics. The resulting …
Recent developments on the final state of a gravitationally collapsing massive matter cloud are summarized and reviewed here. After a brief background on the problem, we point out how the black hole and naked singularity end states arise naturally in spherical collapse. We see that it is the geometry of trapped surfaces that governs this phenomena.
We study the formation of black holes by spherical domain wall collapse as seen by an asymptotic observer, using the functional Schrodinger formalism. To explore what signals such observers will see, we study radiation of a scalar quantum field in the collapsing domain wall background. The total energy flux radiated diverges when backreaction of the radiation on the collapsing wall is ignored, and the domain wall is seen by the asymptotic observer to evaporate by non-thermal ``pre-Hawking radiation'' during the collapse process. Evaporation by pre-Hawking radiation implies that an asymptotic o…
It has been recently shown (Mitra,- astro-ph/9910408, astro-ph/0207056) that the timelike spherical collapse of a radiating, physical fluid in General Relativity, as seen by an interior co-moving observer at rest in the physical fluid, does not permit formation of ``trapped surfaces''. This followed from the fact that the formation of a trapped surface in a physical fluid would cause the timelike world lines of the collapsing fluid to become null at the would be trapped surface, thus violating the Principle of Equivalence in General Theory of Relativity. In this paper we generalize and extend …
We analyze the stability of the Cauchy horizon associated with a globally naked, shell-focussing singularity arising from the complete gravitational collapse of a spherical dust cloud. In previous work, we have studied the dynamics of spherical test scalar fields on such a background. In particular, we proved that such fields cannot develop any divergences which propagate along the Cauchy horizon. In the present work, we extend our analysis to the more general case of test fields without symmetries and to linearized gravitational perturbations with odd parity. To this purpose, we first conside…
In this work, the collapsing process of a spherically symmetric star, made of dust cloud, is studied in Hořava Lifshitz gravity in the background of Chaplygin gas dark energy. Two different classes of Chaplygin gas, namely, New variable modified Chaplygin gas and generalized cosmic Chaplygin gas are considered for the collapse study. Graphs are drawn to characterize the nature and to determine the possible outcome of gravitational collapse. A comparative study is done between the collapsing process in the two different dark energy models. It is found that for open and closed universe, collapse…
Classical field theory is insensitive to the split of the field into a background configuration and a dynamical perturbation. In gauge theories, the situation is complicated by the fact that a covariant (w.r.t. the background field) gauge fixing breaks this split independence of the action. Nevertheless, background independence is preserved on the observables, as defined via the BRST formalism, since the violation term is BRST exact. In quantized gauge theories, however, BRST exactness of the violation term is not sufficient to guarantee background independence, due to potential anomalies. We …
We study quantum radiation emitted during the collapse of a quantized, gravitating, spherical domain wall. The amount of radiation emitted during collapse now depends on the wavefunction of the collapsing wall and the background spacetime. If the wavefunction is initially in the form of a sharp wavepacket, the expectation value of the particle occupation number is determined as a function of time and frequency. The results are in good agreement with our earlier semiclassical analysis and show that the quantum radiation is non-thermal and evaporation accompanies gravitational collapse.
The relative flow of the Schwarzschild vs. the proper time during the classical evolution of a collapsing shell in the Schwarzschild coordinates practically forces us to interpret black hole formation as a highly non-local quantum process in which a shell/anti-shell pair is created within the incipient horizon, thus canceling out the original collapsing shell exactly at the horizon. By studying quantum fields in the black hole background, we reveal similar non-local effects. Among other things, the outgoing member of the Hawking pair very quickly becomes entangled with the black hole geometry …
