The silver ruthenium oxide AgRuO$_3$ consists of honeycomb [Ru$_2^{5+}$O$_6^{2-}$] layers, and can be considered an analogue of SrRu$_2$O$_6$ with a different intercalation stage. We present measurements of magnetic susceptibility and specific heat on AgRuO$_3$ single crystals which reveal a sharp antiferromagnetic transition at 342(3)K. The electrical transport in single crystals of AgRuO$_3$ is determined by a combination of activated conduction over an intrinsic semiconducting gap of $\approx$ 100 meV and carriers trapped and thermally released from defects. From powder neutron diffraction data a Néel-type antiferromagnetic structure with the Ru moments along the $c$ axis is derived. Raman and muon spin rotation spectroscopy measurements on AgRuO$_3$ powder samples indicate a further weak phase transition or a crossover in the temperature range 125-200 K. The transition does not show up in magnetic susceptibility and its origin is argued to be related to defects but cannot be fully clarified. The experimental findings are complemented by DFT-based electronic structure calculations. It is found that the magnetism in AgRuO$_3$ is similar to that of SrRu$_2$O$_6$, however with stronger intralayer and weaker interlayer magnetic exchange interactions.
Bi3Mn4O12(NO3), in which the Mn4+ ions carry S=3/2, is the first honeycomb lattice system that shows no long-range magnetic order. Using neutron scattering, we have determined that short-range antiferromagnetic correlations develop at low temperatures. Applied magnetic fields induce a magnetic transition, in which the short-range order abruptly expands into a long-range order.
The Mott transition in honeycomb compounds with significant spin-orbit coupling is explored. At finite temperatures we identify a novel semimetallic phase located between a topological insulator and a topological Mott insulator. This semimetal is characterized by having no charge gap, no quasiparticles and gapped spin excitations with non-trivial topological properties. While charge conduction is incoherent involving mean-free paths violating the Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit, spin excitations can be transported ballistically along the edges giving rise to a quantized spin conductance. Such bad topol…
Novel magnetic ordering on the honeycomb lattice due to emergent weak anisotropic interactions generated by the mixing between the $J=1/2$ sector and the magnetically inactive 3/2 sector is investigated in a three-orbital interacting electron model in the absence of Hund's coupling. Self-consistent determination of magnetic order yields anisotropic Néel and zigzag orders for different parameter regimes, highlighting the effect of the emergent single-ion anisotropy. Study of magnon excitations shows extremely small magnon energy scale compared to the hopping energy scale, and enhancement of ani…
High field electron spin resonance, nuclear magnetic resonance and magnetization studies addressing the ground state of the quasi two-dimensional spin-1/2 honeycomb lattice compound InCu{2/3}V{1/3}O{3} are reported. Uncorrelated finite size structural domains occurring in the honeycomb planes are expected to inhibit long range magnetic order. Surprisingly, ESR data reveal the development of two collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) sublattices below ~ 20 K whereas NMR results show the presence of the staggered internal field. Magnetization data evidence a spin reorientation transition at ~ 5.7 T. …
We report the dependence of magnetic properties on the crystalline disorder in Li$_{2}$RuO$_3$ with Ru honeycomb lattice. This oxide exhibits unconventional Ru-dimer transition below $T_\text{d} \sim$ 540 K. We demonstrate that the cell parameters, related to the coherence of the dimer formation, are strongly dependent on the synthesis procedure. We show that the magnetic behavior at the dimer transition is closely related to the lattice parameters. In particular, we revealed that samples with well-ordered dimers exhibit a first-order magnetic transition with the onset exceeding 550~K, higher …
Inelastic neutron scattering study has been performed in an S=3/2 bilayer honeycomb lattice compound Bi3Mn4O12(NO3) at ambient and high magnetic fields. Relatively broad and monotonically dispersive magnetic excitations were observed at ambient field, where no long range magnetic order exists. In the magnetic field-induced long-range ordered state at 10 T, the magnetic dispersions become slightly more intense, albeit still broad as in the disordered state, and two excitation gaps, probably originating from an easy-plane magnetic anisotropy and intrabilayer interactions, develop. Analyzing the …
New frustrated antiferromagnetic compounds CuRE2Ge2O8 (RE=Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu) have been investigated using high-resolution x-ray diffraction, magnetic and heat capacity measurements. These systems show different magnetic lattices depending on rare-earth element. The nonmagnetic Eu compound is a S=1/2 two-dimensional triangular antiferromagnetic lattice oriented in the ac plane with geometrical frustration. On the other hand, the Pr, Nd, and Sm compounds show a three-dimensional honeycomb-tunnel-like lattice made of RE^3+ running along the a axis with the characteristic behavior of frustrated antif…
We report the magnetic properties in the Co- and Zn-doped spin-1/2 honeycomb-lattice compound In$_3$Cu$_2$VO$_9$. The magnetic susceptibility and specific heat experiments show no long-range ordering down to 2 K in In$_3$Cu$_2$VO$_9$. In the low temperature range, approximately T$^{2}$-dependent magnetic specific heat and linearly T-dependent spin susceptibility were observed, suggesting a spin liquid candidate with a S = 1/2 honeycomb lattice. When Cu$^{2+}$ ions are partially substituted by Co$^{2+}$ ions, both impurity potential scattering and magnetic impurity scattering induced by magneti…
Spin waves in the zigzag ordered state on a honeycomb lattice are investigated within a Hubbard model with spin-dependent hopping terms. Roles of the emergent Kitaev, Heisenberg, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya, and symmetric-off-diagonal spin interactions are investigated on the stability of the zigzag order. While the DM interactions are found to destabilize the zigzag order, the secondary spin-dependent hopping terms (associated with structural distortions) are shown to strongly stabilize the zigzag order and account for magnetocrystalline anisotropy, easy axis, and spin wave gap. The calculated spin…
Recent interest in honeycomb lattice materials has focused on their potential to host quantum spin liquid (QSL) states. Variations in bond angles and spin allow a range of interesting behaviors on this lattice, from the predicted QSL ground state of the Kitaev model to exotic magnetic orders. Here we report the physical properties of two compounds with rare earths on an approximate honeycomb lattice. The isostructural compounds Nd$_2$S$_5$Sn (J = $\frac{9}{2}$) and Pr$_2$S$_5$Sn (J = 4) permit a direct comparison of half-integer versus integer spins on this lattice. We find strikingly differen…
Synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of a new 2:1 ordered triple perovskite Sr3CaOs2O9 are reported. The compound crystallizes in P21/c space group and features a unique buckled honeycomb lattice of osmium. It exhibits long-range antiferromagnetic ordering with a high Neel temperature of 385 K as confirmed by susceptibility, heat capacity and neutron diffraction measurements and is electrically insulating. This compound is also the first example of a 2:1 ordered osmate perovskite. Theoretical investigations indicate that Sr3CaOs2O9 features a sizeable antiferromagnetic exchange…
The Kitaev spin model offers an exact quantum spin liquid in the ground state, which has stimulated exploration of its material realization over the last decade. Thus far, most of the candidates are found in $4d$- and $5d$-electron compounds, in which the low-spin $d^5$ electron configuration subject to strong spin-orbit coupling comprises a Kramers doublet with the effective angular momentum $j_{\rm eff}=1/2$ and gives rise to the bond-dependent anisotropic interactions in the Kitaev model. Here we theoretically investigate other candidates in $4f$-electron compounds with the $f^1$ electron c…
Keeping current interests to identify materials with intrinsic magnetodielectric behavior near room temperature and with novel pyroelectric current anomalies, we report temperature and magnetic-field dependent behavior of complex dielectric permittivity and pyroelectric current for an oxide, Li2Ni2Mo3O12, containing magnetic ions with (distorted) honey-comb and chain arrangement and ordering magnetically below 8 K. The dielectric data reveal the existence of relaxor ferroelectricity behavior in the range 160-240 K and there are corresponding Raman mode anomalies as well in that temperature ran…
The crystal structure, magnetic ground state, and the temperature dependent microscopic spin-spin correlations of the frustrated honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet Na2Co2TeO6 have been investigated by powder neutron diffraction. A three dimensional (3D) long-range antiferromagnetic ordering has been found below TN ~ 24.8 K. The magnetic ground state, determined to be zigzag antiferromagnet [k = (1/2 0 0)], occurs due to the competing exchange interactions up to third nearest neighbors within the honeycomb lattice. The exceptional existence of a limited magnetic correlation length along the c ax…
A range of honeycomb-lattice compounds has been proposed and investigated in the search for a topological Kitaev spin liquid. However, sizable Heisenberg interactions and additional symmetry-allowed exchange anisotropies in the magnetic Hamiltonian of these potential Kitaev materials push them away from the pure Kitaev spin-liquid state. Particularly the Kitaev-to-Heisenberg coupling ratio is essential in this respect. With the help of advanced quantum-chemistry methods, we explore how the magnetic coupling ratios depend on pressure in several honeycomb compounds (Na$_2$IrO$_3$, $β$-Li$_2$IrO$…
The microscopic spin-spin correlations in the 2D layered spin-1 honeycomb lattice compound Na2Ni2TeO6 have been investigated by neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering. The honeycomb lattice of spin-1 Ni2+ ions, within the crystallographic ab planes, are well separated along the c axis by an intermediate Na layer whose crystal structure contains chiral nuclear density distributions of Na ions. The chirality of the alternating Na layers is opposite. Such alternating chirality of the Na layer dictates the magnetic periodicity along the c axis where an up-up-down-down spin arrangemen…
Compounds of transition metal ions with strong spin-orbit coupling recently attracted attention due to the possibility to host frustrated bond-dependent anisotropic magnetic interactions. In general, such interactions lead to complex phase diagrams that may include exotic phases, e.g. the Kitaev spin liquid. Here we report on our comprehensive analysis of the global phase diagram of the extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model relevant to honeycomb lattice compounds Na2IrO3 and alpha-RuCl3. We have utilized recently developed method based on spin coherent states that enabled us to resolve arbitrary sp…
Finding new materials with antiferromagnetic (AFM) Kitaev interaction is an urgent issue to broaden and enrich the quantum magnetism research significantly. By carrying out inelastic neutron scattering experiments and subsequent analysis, we conclude that Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ and Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ are new honeycomb cobalt-based AFM Kitaev systems. The spin-orbit excitons at 20-28~meV in both compounds strongly supports the idea that Co$^{2+}$ ions of both compounds have a spin-orbital entangled $J_\rm{eff}=1/2$ state. Furthermore, we found that a generalized Kitaev-Heisenberg Hamiltonian can …

We present electronic and magnetic properties of a honeycomb compound In$_{3}$Cu$_{2}$VO$_{9}$ in this paper. We find that the parent phase is a charge transfer insulator with an energy gap of about 1.5 eV. Singly occupied d$_{3z^{2}-r^{2}}$ electrons of copper ions contribute an $S$ = 1/2 spin, while vanadium ions show nonmagnetism. Oxygen 2$p$ orbitals hybridizing with a small fraction of Cu 3$d$ orbitals dominate the density of states near $E_{F}$. The planar nearest-neighbor, next-nearest-neighbor and interplane superexchange couplings of Cu spins are $J_{1}$ $\approx$ 16.2 meV, $J_{2}$ $\…
Spin-1/2 chains with alternating antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (FM) couplings exhibit quantum entanglement like the integer-spin Haldane chains and might be similarly utilized for quantum computations. Such alternating AF-FM chains have been proposed to be realized in the distorted honeycomb-lattice compound Na$_2$Cu$_2$TeO$_6$, but to confirm this picture a comprehensive understanding of the exchange interactions including terms outside of the idealized model is required. Here we employ neutron scattering to study the spin dynamics in Na$_2$Cu$_2$TeO$_6$ and accurately determine th…
The magnetic properties of the two-dimensional, S=1 honeycomb antiferromagnet BaNi$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ have been comprehensively studied using DC susceptibility measurements and inelastic neutron scattering techniques. The magnetic excitation spectrum is found to be dispersionless within experimental resolution between the honeycomb layers, while it disperses strongly within the honeycomb plane where it consists of two gapped spin-wave modes. The magnetic excitations are compared to linear spin-wave theory allowing the Hamiltonian to be determined. The first- and second-neighbour magnetic exchange i…
The nature of the effective spin Hamiltonian and magnetic order in the honeycomb iridates is explored by considering a trigonal crystal field effect and spin-orbit coupling. Starting from a Hubbard model, an effective spin Hamiltonian is derived in terms of an emergent pseudo-spin-1/2 moment in the limit of large trigonal distortions and spin-orbit coupling. The present pseudo-spins arise from a spin-orbital locking and are different from the jeff = 1/2 moments that are obtained when the spin-orbit coupling dominates and trigonal distortions are neglected. The resulting spin Hamiltonian is ani…
We report the successful synthesis of single-crystals of the layered iridate, (Na$_{1-x}$Li$_{x}$)$_2$IrO$_3$, $0\leq x \leq 0.9$, and a thorough study of its structural, magnetic, thermal and transport properties. The new compound allows a controlled interpolation between Na$_2$IrO$_3$ and Li$_2$IrO$_3$, while maintaing the novel quantum magnetism of the honeycomb Ir$^{4+}$ planes. The measured phase diagram demonstrates a dramatic suppression of the Néel temperature, $T_N$, at intermediate $x$ suggesting that the magnetic order in Na$_2$IrO$_3$ and Li$_2$IrO$_3$ are distinct, and that at $x\…
We report a combined $^{115}$In NQR, $^{51}$V NMR and $μ$SR spectroscopic study of the low-temperature magnetic properties of InCu$_{2/3}$V$_{1/3}$O$_3$, a quasi-two dimensional (2D) compound comprising in the spin sector a honeycomb lattice of antiferromagnetically coupled spins $S=1/2$ associated with Cu$^{2+}$ ions. Despite substantial experimental and theoretical efforts, the ground state of this material was has not been ultimately identified. In particular, two characteristic temperatures of about $\sim 40$ K and $\sim 20$ K manifesting themselves as anomalies in different magnetic measu…
The rare-earth pyrosilicate family of compounds (RE$_{2}$Si$_{2}$O$_{7}$) hosts a variety of polymorphs, some with honeycomb-like geometries of the rare-earth sublattices, and the magnetism has yet to be deeply explored in many of the cases. Here we report on the ground state properties of C-Er$_{2}$Si$_{2}$O$_{7}$. C-Er$_{2}$Si$_{2}$O$_{7}$ crystallizes in the C2/m space group and the Er$^{3+}$ atoms form a distorted honeycomb lattice in the $a$-$b$ plane. We have utilized specific heat, DC susceptibility, and neutron diffraction measurements to characterize C-Er$_{2}$Si$_{2}$O$_{7}$. Our spe…
Single crystals of SrMn2P2 and CaMn2P2 were grown using Sn flux and characterized by single-crystal x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity rho, heat capacity Cp, and magnetic susceptibility chi = M/H measurements versus temperature T and magnetization M versus applied magnetic field H isotherm measurements. The x-ray diffraction results show that both compounds adopt the trigonal CaAl2Si2-type structure. The rho(T) measurements demonstrate insulating ground states for both compounds. The chi(T) and Cp(T) data reveal a weak first-order antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at the Neel temperatu…
The 5d-electron honeycomb compound H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_3$ [K. Kitagawa $et$ $al.$, Nature 554, 341-345 (2018)] exhibits an apparent quantum spin liquid (QSL) state. In this intercalated spin-orbital compound, a remarkable pile up of low-energy states was experimentally observed in specific heat and nuclear magnetic (NMR) spin relaxation. We show that a bond disordered Kitaev model can naturally account for this phenomenon, suggesting that disorder plays an essential role in its theoretical description. In the exactly soluble Kitaev model, we obtain, via spin fractionalization, a random bipartite h…
We consider the quasi-two-dimensional pseudo-spin-1/2 Kitaev - Heisenberg model proposed for A2IrO3 (A=Li, Na) compounds. The spin-wave excitation spectrum, the sublattice magnetization, and the transition temperatures are calculated in the random phase approximation (RPA) for four different ordered phases, observed in the parameter space of the model: antiferomagnetic, stripe, ferromagnetic, and zigzag phases. The Néel temperature and temperature dependence of the sublattice magnetization are compared with the experimental data on Na2IrO3.
Motivated by the rich physics of honeycomb magnetic materials, we obtain the phase diagram and analyze magnetic properties of the spin-1/2 and spin-1 J1-J2-J3 Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice. Based on the SU(2) and SU(3) symmetry representations of the Schwinger boson approach, which treats disordered spin liquids and magnetically ordered phases on an equal footing, we obtain the complete phase diagrams in the (J2,J3)plane. This is achieved using a fully unrestricted approach which does not assume any pre-defined Ansatze. For S=1/2, we find a quantum spin liquid (QSL) stabilized betw…
We discover a new type of multiple-$q$ state, "ripple state", in a frustrated honeycomb-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet under magnetic fields. The ground state has an infinite ring-like degeneracy in the wavevector space, exhibiting a cooperative paramagnetic state, "ring-liquid" state. We elucidate that the system exhibits the ripple state as a new low-temperature thermodynamic phase via a second-order phase transition from the ring-liquid state, keeping the ring-like spin structure factor. The spin texture in real space looks like a "water ripple" and can induce a giant electric polarizat…
We calculate the two-magnon Raman scattering spectra in antiferromagnetic phases of several frustrated spin models defined on the honeycomb lattice. These include the Néel antiferromagnetic phase of a $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ model and the stripe phase of the Heisenberg-Kitaev model. We show that both the magnetic frustration and the anisotropy of interactions may significantly affect the Raman spectra. We further discuss the implications of our results to the magnetic excitations of the iron-based compound BaFe$_2$Se$_2$O and show how the magnetic interactions can be extracted from fit to the Raman …
This paper reviews the current progress on searching the Kitaev spin liquid state in 3d electron systems. Honeycomb cobaltates were recently proposed as promising candidates to realize the Kitaev spin liquid state, due to the more localized wave functions of 3d ions compared with that of 4d and 5d ions, and also the easy tunability of the exchange Hamiltonian in favor of Kitaev interaction. Several key parameters that have large impacts on the exchange constants, such as the charge-transfer gap and the trigonal crystal field, are identified and discussed. Specifically, tuning crystal field eff…
We investigate the doping effects of magnetic and nonmagnetic impurities injected to the honeycomb iridate sample of Na2IrO3 . Both the doping result in changing the ordering temperature as well as the Curie-Weiss temperature of the parent sample as a consequence of enhancement of the lattice frustration, screening of the Ir atoms and spin-orbit effects that reflects in the susceptibility and specific heat measurements. Our findings are corroborated by a detailed comparative study of various magnetic and nonmagnetic impurity atoms that have notable effects on different electronic properties of…
Co$^{2+}$ ions in an octahedral crystal field, stabilise a j$_{eff}$ = 1/2 ground state with an orbital degree of freedom and have been recently put forward for realising Kitaev interactions, a prediction we have tested by investigating spin dynamics in two cobalt honeycomb lattice compounds, Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ and Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$, using inelastic neutron scattering. We used linear spin wave theory to show that the magnetic spectra can be reproduced with a spin Hamiltonian including a dominant Kitaev nearest-neighbour interaction, weaker Heisenberg interactions up to the third neighbour a…
When spin-orbit-entangled $d$-electrons reside on a honeycomb lattice, rich quantum states are anticipated to emerge, as exemplified by the $d^5$ Kitaev materials. Distinct yet equally intriguing physics may be realized with a $d$-electron count other than $d^5$. We found that the layered ruthenate Ag$_3$LiRu$_2$O$_6$ with $d^4$ Ru$^{4+}$ ions at ambient pressure forms a honeycomb lattice of spin-orbit-entangled singlets, which is a playground for frustrated excitonic magnetism. Under pressure, the singlet state does not develop the expected excitonic magnetism but experiences two successive t…
We present the observation of an isostructural Mott insulator-metal transition in van-der-Waals honeycomb antiferromagnet V$_{0.9}$PS$_3$ through high-pressure x-ray diffraction and transport measurements. The MPX$_3$ family of magnetic van-der-Waals materials (M denotes a first row transition metal and X either S or Se) are currently the subject of broad and intense attention, but the vanadium compounds have until this point not been studied beyond their basic properties. We observe insulating variable-range-hopping type resistivity in V$_{0.9}$PS$_3$, with a gradual increase in effective dim…
The structural and magnetic properties of a new series of iridium-based honeycomb lattices with the formula Na3-delta(Na1-xMgx)Ir2O6 (x = 0 to 1) are reported. As x and delta are increased, the honeycomb lattice contracts and the strength of the antiferromagnetic interactions decreases systematically due to a reduction in Ir-O-Ir bond angles. Samples with imperfect stoichiometry exhibit disordered magnetic freezing at temperatures Tf between 3.4 K and 5 K. This glassy magnetism likely arises due to the presence of non-magnetic Ir3+, which are distributed randomly throughout the lattice, with a…
Recent progress in the understanding of the complex magnetic properties of the family of rare-earth strontium oxides, SrLn2O4, is reviewed. These compounds consisting of hexagons and triangles are affected by geometrical frustration and therefore exhibit its characteristic features, such as a significant reduction of magnetic ordering temperatures and complex phase diagrams in an applied field. Some of the observed features appear to be rather remarkable even in the context of the unusual behavior associated with geometrically frustrated magnetic systems. Of particular interest is the coexiste…
We have explored the hidden symmetries of a generic four-parameter nearest-neighbor spin model, allowed in honeycomb lattice compounds under trigonal compression. Our method utilizes a systematic algorithm to identify all dual transformations of the model that map the Hamiltonian on itself, changing the parameters and providing exact links between different points in its parameter space. We have found the complete set of points of hidden SU(2) symmetry at which seemingly highly anisotropic model can be mapped back on the Heisenberg model and inherits therefore its properties such as the presen…
We present a spin-rotation-invariant Green-function theory for the dynamic spin susceptibility in the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a stacked honeycomb lattice. Employing a generalized mean-field approximation for arbitrary temperatures, the thermodynamic quantities (two-spin correlation functions, internal energy, magnetic susceptibility, staggered magnetization, N'eel temperature, correlation length) and the spin-excitation spectrum are calculated by solving a coupled system of self-consistency equations for the correlation functions. The temperature dependence of the magnet…
High-frequency ESR results on the S=1/2 Heisenberg hexagonal antiferromagnet InCu2/3V1/3O3 are reported. This compound appears to be a rare model substance for the honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet with very weak interlayer couplings. The high-temperature magnetic susceptibility can be interpreted by the S=1/2 honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet, and it shows a magnetic-order-like anomaly at TN=38 K. Although, the resonance field of our high-frequency ESR shows the typical behavior of the antiferromagnetic resonance, the linewidth of our high-frequency ESR continues to increase below TN, while i…
We examine the role of spin-orbit coupling in the electronic structure of $α$-RuCl3, in which Ru ions in 4d5 configuration form a honeycomb lattice. The measured optical spectra exhibit a clear optical gap and excitations within the t2g orbitals. The spectra can be described very well with first-principles electronic structure calculations obtained by taking into account both spin orbit coupling and electron correlations. Furthermore, our X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements at the Ru L-edges exhibit distinct spectral features associated with the presence of substantial spin- orbit coupl…
In a recent paper by Schmitt et al. (arXiv:1402.1091), signs of two exchange interactions of one-dimensional alternating chains in distorted honeycomb systems of Na3Cu2SbO6 and Na2Cu2TeO6 are argued by theoretical calculations. Although the authors report that they have clarified that the interaction J1a is ferromagnetic between the spins within a structural dimer, and J1b is antiferromagnetic between these dimers, these results have been known for a long time by our two papers, which are cited by Schmitt et al.
We study the effective spin-orbital model for honeycomb-layered transition metal compounds, applying the second-order perturbation theory to the three-orbital Hubbard model with the anisotropic hoppings. This model is reduced to the Kitaev model in the strong spin-orbit coupling limit. Combining the cluster mean-field approximations with the exact diagonalization, we treat the Kugel-Khomskii type superexchange interaction and spin-orbit coupling on an equal footing to discuss ground-state properties. We find that a zigzag ordered state is realized in the model within nearest-neighbor interacti…
The quantum phase transition, scaling behaviors, and thermodynamics in the spin-1/2 quantum Heisenberg model with antiferromagnetic coupling $J>0$ in armchair direction and ferromagnetic interaction $J'<0$ in zigzag direction on a honeycomb lattice are systematically studied using the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method. By calculating the Binder ratio $Q_{2}$ and spin stiffness $ρ$ in two directions for various coupling ratio $α=J'/J$ under different lattice sizes, we found that a quantum phase transition from the dimerized phase to the stripe phase occurs at the quantum critical point…
We examine the thermal properties of the spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice in the presence of an easy-plane single-ion anisotropy as well as the effects of an additional weak in-plane easy-axis anisotropy. In particular, using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we analyze the scaling of the correlation length near the thermal phase transition into the ordered phase. This allows us to quantify the temperature regime above the critical point in which -- in spite of the additional in-plane easy-axis anisotropy -- characteristic easy-plane physics, such as near a…
The high temperature magnetic order in SrRu$_2$O$_6$ was studied by measuring magnetization and neutron powder diffraction with both polarized and unpolarized neutrons. SrRu$_2$O$_6$ crystallizes into the hexagonal lead antimonate (PbSb$_2$O$_6$, space group \textit{P}$\overline{3}$1\textit{m}) structure with layers of edge-sharing RuO$_6$ octahedra separated by Sr$^{2+}$ ions. SrRu$_2$O$_6$ orders at $T_N$=565\,K with Ru moments coupled antiferromagnetically both in-plane and out-of-plane. The magnetic moment is 1.30(2) $μ_\mathrm{B}$/Ru at room temperature and is along the crystallographic \…
The pure Kitaev honeycomb model harbors a quantum spin liquid in zero magnetic fields, while applying finite magnetic fields induces a topological spin liquid with non-Abelian anyonic excitations. This latter phase has been much sought after in Kitaev candidate materials, such as $α$-RuCl$_3$. Currently, two competing scenarios exist for the intermediate field phase of this compound ($B=7-10$ T), based on experimental as well as theoretical results: (i) conventional multiparticle magnetic excitations of integer quantum number vs. (ii) Majorana fermionic excitations of possibly non-Abelian natu…
We report the structures and physical properties of two new iridates, NaIrO$_3$ and Sr$_3$CaIr$_2$O$_9$, both of which contain continuous two-dimensional honeycomb connectivity. NaIrO3 is produced by room temperature oxidative deintercalation of sodium from Na$_2$IrO$_3$, and contains edge-sharing IrO6 octahedra that form a planar honeycomb lattice. Sr$_3$CaIr$_2$O$_9$, produced via conventional solid-state synthesis, hosts a buckled honeycomb lattice with novel corner-sharing connectivity between IrO6 octahedra. Both of these new compounds are comprised of Ir$^{5+}$ (5$d^4$) and exhibit negli…
We present inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the antiferromagnetic insulator CaMn$_2$Sb$_2$, which consists of corrugated honeycomb layers of Mn. The dispersion of magnetic excitations has been measured along the H and L directions in reciprocal space, with a maximum excitation energy of $\approx$ 24 meV. These excitations are well described by spin waves in a Heisenberg model, including first and second neighbor exchange interactions, J$_{1}$ and J$_{2}$, in the Mn plane and also an exchange interaction between planes. The determined ratio J$_{2}$/J$_{1}$ $\approx$ 1/6 suggests tha…
Gapless spinons and a field-induced soliton gap in the hyper-honeycomb Cu oxalate framework compound [(C$_{2}$H$_{5}$)$_{3}$NH]$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$(C$_{2}$O$_{4}$)$_{3}$
