Co$^{2+}$ ions in an octahedral crystal field, stabilise a j$_{eff}$ = 1/2 ground state with an orbital degree of freedom and have been recently put forward for realising Kitaev interactions, a prediction we have tested by investigating spin dynamics in two cobalt honeycomb lattice compounds, Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ and Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$, using inelastic neutron scattering. We used linear spin wave theory to show that the magnetic spectra can be reproduced with a spin Hamiltonian including a dominant Kitaev nearest-neighbour interaction, weaker Heisenberg interactions up to the third neighbour and bond-dependent off-diagonal exchange interactions. Beyond the Kitaev interaction that alone would induce a quantum spin liquid state, the presence of these additional couplings is responsible for the zigzag-type long-range magnetic ordering observed at low temperature in both compounds. These results provide evidence for the realization of Kitaev-type coupling in cobalt-based materials, despite hosting a weaker spin-orbit coupling than their 4d and 5d counterparts.
The spin-1/2 alternating Heisenberg chain system Na$_3$Cu$_2$SbO$_6$ features two relevant exchange couplings: $J_{1a}$ within the structural Cu$_2$O$_6$ dimers and $J_{1b}$ between the dimers. Motivated by the controversially discussed nature of $J_{1a}$, we perform extensive density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations, including DFT+$U$ and hybrid functionals. Fits to the experimental magnetic susceptibility using high-temperature series expansions and quantum Monte Carlo simulations yield the optimal parameters $J_{1a}$ = $-$217 K and $J_{1b}$ = 174 K with the alternation ratio $α= J_{1a}/…
Finding new materials with antiferromagnetic (AFM) Kitaev interaction is an urgent issue to broaden and enrich the quantum magnetism research significantly. By carrying out inelastic neutron scattering experiments and subsequent analysis, we conclude that Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ and Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ are new honeycomb cobalt-based AFM Kitaev systems. The spin-orbit excitons at 20-28~meV in both compounds strongly supports the idea that Co$^{2+}$ ions of both compounds have a spin-orbital entangled $J_\rm{eff}=1/2$ state. Furthermore, we found that a generalized Kitaev-Heisenberg Hamiltonian can …
Cobaltates with 3$d$ based layered honeycomb structure were recently proposed as Kitaev magnets and putative candidates to host the long-sought Kitaev spin liquid. Here we present inelastic neutron scattering results down to 50 mK for powder samples of Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ and Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$, with high resolution in regions of low momentum and energy transfers. We compare the experimental data below the antiferromagnetic zigzag ordering temperature with dynamical structure factors obtained within spin wave theory. We search the wide parameter range of a $K$-$J_1$-$Γ$-$Γ^{\prime}$-$J_3$ spi…

We studied the field dependent thermal conductivity ($κ$) of Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$, a compound considered as the manifestation of the Kitaev model based on the high-spin $d^7$ Co$^{2+}$ ions. We found that in-plane magnetic fields beyond a critical value $B_c \approx$~10 T are able to drastically enhance $κ$ at low temperatures, resulting in a double-peak structure of $κ(T)$ that closely resembles the behavior of $α$-RuCl$_3$. This result suggests that heat transport in Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ is primarily phononic, and it is strongly affected by scattering from magnetic excitations that are highly …
Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ has recently been proposed to be a Kitaev-like honeycomb magnet. To assess how close it is to realizing Kitaev quantum spin liquids, we have measured magnetization and specific heat on high-quality single crystals in magnetic fields applied along high-symmetry directions. Small training fields reveal a weak but canonical ferrimagnetic behavior below 27 K, which cannot be explained by the zigzag antiferromagnetic order alone and suggests coexisting Néel-type order of moments canted away from the zigzag chains. Moderate fields in the honeycomb plane suppress the thermal trans…
The magnetic structures and spin dynamics of Na$_{2}$Co$_{2}$TeO$_{6}$ and Na$_{2}$Ni$_{2}$TeO$_{6}$ are investigated by means of elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements and the results are discussed in the context of a generalized Kitaev-Heisenberg model on honeycomb lattice with strong spin-orbit coupling. The large number of parameters involved in the Hamiltonian model are evaluated by using an iterative optimization algorithm capable of extracting model solutions and simultaneously estimating their uncertainty. The analyses establish that both Co$^{2+}$ ($d^7$) and Ni$^{2+}$ …
Very recently, a 3$d$ based honeycomb cobaltate Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ has garnered tremendous attention due to the proposed proximity to the Kitaev spin-liquid state as its 4$d$/5$d$ counterparts. Here, we use Zn to substitute Co in a broad range and perform systematic studies on Na$_2$Co$_{2-x}$Zn$_x$TeO$_6$ by structural, magnetic, and thermodynamic measurements, and track the doping evolution of its magnetic ground states. Due to the extremely close radii of Zn$^{2+}$ and high-spin Co$^{2+}$ ions, the substitution can be easily achieved. X-ray diffractions reveal no structural transition but …
Monoclinic Li$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ has been proposed as a Kitaev spin liquid candidate and investigated intensively, whereas the properties of its polymorph, the orthorhombic phase, is less known. Here we report the magnetic properties of the orthorhombic Li$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ as revealed by dc and ac magnetic susceptibility, muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and neutron diffraction measurements. Successive magnetic transitions at (115, 89 and 71) K were observed in the low field dc susceptibility measurements. The transitions below $T_N$ (= 115 K), are suppressed in higher applied fields. However, zero …

Recently, honeycomb cobaltates with 3$d^7$ were proposed to display Kitaev physics despite weak spin-orbit coupling. However, other theoretical and experimental works found leading XXZ Heisenberg and negligible Kitaev interactions in BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$ (BCAO), which calls for a further study to clarify the origin of the discrepancies. Here we derive the analytical expressions of the spin model using strong-coupling perturbation theory. With tight binding parameters obtained by {\it ab-initio} calculations for idealized honeycomb BCAO, we find that the largest intraorbital $t_{2g}-t_{2g}$ ex…
In the quest for materials hosting Kitaev spin liquids, much of the efforts have been focused on the fourth- and fifth-row transition metal compounds, which are spin-orbit coupling assisted Mott insulators. Here, we study the structural and magnetic properties of 3$d$ transition metal oxides, Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ and Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$. The partial occupancy of sodium in former compound is addressed using a cluster expansion, and a honeycomb lattice of sodiums is found to be energetically favored. Starting from the \textit{ab initio} band structures, a many-body second order perturbation theor…

We investigate both the longitudinal thermal conductivity ($κ_{xx}$) and the planar thermal Hall conductivity ($κ_{xy}$) in the Kitaev spin liquid candidate of Co-based honeycomb antiferromagnet Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ in a magnetic field ($B$) applied along the $a$ and $a^*$ axes. A finite $κ_{xy}$ is resolved for both field directions in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase below the Néel temperature of 27 K. The temperature dependence of $κ_{xy}/T$ shows the emergence of topological bosonic excitations. In addition, the field dependence of $κ_{xy}$ shows sign reversals at the critical fields in th…
The thermal Hall effect, defined as a heat current response transversal to an applied temperature gradient, is a central experimental probe of exotic electrically insulating phases of matter. A key question is how the interplay between magnetic and structural degrees of freedom gives rise to a nonzero thermal Hall conductivity (THC). Here, we present evidence for an intrinsic thermal Hall effect in the Heisenberg-Kitaev antiferromagnet and spin-liquid candidate Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ brought about by the quantum-geometric Berry curvature of so-called magnon polarons, resulting from magnon-phonon …
The realization of Kitaev's honeycomb magnetic model in real materials has become one of the most pursued topics in condensed matter physics and materials science. If found, it is expected to host exotic quantum phases of matter and offers potential realizations of fault$-$tolerant quantum computations. Over the past years, much effort was made on 4d$-$ or 5d$-$ heavy transition metal compounds because of their intrinsic strong spin$-$orbit coupling. But more recently, there have been growing shreds of evidence that the Kitaev model could also be realized in 3d$-$transition metal systems with …
High-spin $d^7$ Co(II) compounds have recently been identified as possible platforms for realising highly anisotropic and bond-dependent couplings featured in quantum-compass models such as the celebrated Kitaev model. In order to evaluate this potential, we consider all symmetry-allowed contributions to the magnetic exchange for ideal edge-sharing bonds. Though a combination of ab-initio and cluster many-body calculations we conclude that bond-dependent couplings are generally suppressed in favor of Heisenberg exchange for real materials. Consequences for several prominent materials including…
