Next-generation wireless communication technologies will allow users to obtain unprecedented performance, paving the way to new and immersive applications. A prominent application requiring high data rates and low communication delay is Virtual Reality (VR), whose presence will become increasingly stronger in the years to come. To the best of our knowledge, we propose the first traffic model for VR applications based on traffic traces acquired from a commercial VR streaming software, allowing the community to further study and improve the technology to manage this type of traffic. This work implements ns-3 applications able to generate and process large bursts of packets, enabling the possibility of analyzing APP-level end-to-end metrics, making the source code as well as the acquired VR traffic traces publicly available and open-source.
This work presents an analysis of the effect of the access router buffer size on packet loss rate and how it can affect the QoS of multimedia services when bursty traffic is present. VoIP traffic, real traces of viedoconferencing and videosurvellance are used in two different scenarios with medium link utilization. The study shows that the bursty nature of some applications may impair the MOS of voice calls especially when a certain number of bursts overlap. When link utilization is above 70% good values of VoIP QoS cannot be obtained.
Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) usually consist of hundreds or thousands of sensor nodes scattered in a geographical area and one or multiple sink(s) collecting information. The special design and character of sensors and their applications make WSNs different from traditional networks. These characteristics pose great challenges for architecture and protocol design, performance modeling, and implementation. Accurately modeling the data generated by each sensor node is essential for correctly simulating network traffic, network congestion, interference between nodes and the energy expended by ea…
In this work, we consider the case where a source with bursty traffic can adjust the transmission duration in order to increase the reliability. The source is equipped with a queue in order to store the arriving packets. We model the system with a discrete time Markov Chain, and we characterize the performance in terms of service probability and average delay per packet. The accuracy of the theoretical results is validated through simulations. This work serves as an initial step in order to provide a framework for systems with arbitrary arrivals and variable transmission durations and it can b…
Proportional fair scheduling (PFS) has been adopted as a standard solution for fair resource allocation in modern wireless cellular networks. With the emergence of heterogeneous networks with widely varying user loads, it is of great importance to characterize the performance of PFS under bursty traffic, which is the case in most wireless streaming and data transfer services. In this letter, we provide the first analytical solution to the performance of PFS under bursty on-off traffic load. We use the Gaussian approximation model to derive a closed-form expression of the achievable user data r…
Despite the robust structure of the Internet, it is still susceptible to disruptive routing updates that prevent network traffic from reaching its destination. Our research shows that BGP announcements that are associated with disruptive updates tend to occur in groups of relatively high frequency, followed by periods of infrequent activity. We hypothesize that we may use these bursty characteristics to detect anomalous routing incidents. In this work, we use manually verified ground truth metadata and volume of announcements as a baseline measure, and propose a burstiness measure that detects…
Emerging real-time applications such as those classified under ultra-reliable low latency (uRLLC) generate bursty traffic and have strict Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. Passive Optical Network (PON) is a popular access network technology, which is envisioned to handle such applications at the access segment of the network. However, the existing standards cannot handle strict QoS constraints. The available solutions rely on instantaneous heuristic decisions and maintain QoS constraints (mostly bandwidth) in an average sense. Existing works with optimal strategies are computationally com…
With the inevitable dominance of video traffic on the Internet, providing perceptually good video quality is becoming a challenging task. This is partly due to the bursty nature of video traffic, changing network conditions and limitations of network transport protocols. This growth of video traffic has made Quality of Experience (QoE) of the end user the focus of the research community. In contrast, Internet service providers are concerned about maximizing revenue by accepting as many sessions as possible, as long as customers remain satisfied. However, there is still no entirely satisfactory…
Virtual reality (VR) is becoming prevalent with a plethora of applications in education, healthcare, entertainment, etc. To increase the user mobility, and to reduce the energy consumption and production cost of VR head mounted displays (HMDs), wireless VR with edge-computing has been the focus of both industry and academia. However, transferring large video frames of VR applications with their stringent Quality of Service (QoS) requirements over wireless network requires innovations and optimizations across different network layers. In order to develop efficient architectures, protocols and s…
In recent years, advances in immersive multimedia technologies, such as extended reality (XR) technologies, have led to more realistic and user-friendly devices. However, these devices are often bulky and uncomfortable, still requiring tether connectivity for demanding applications. The deployment of the fifth generation of telecommunications technologies (5G) has set the basis for XR offloading solutions with the goal of enabling lighter and fully wearable XR devices. In this paper, we present a traffic dataset for two demanding XR offloading scenarios that are complementary to those availabl…
Cloud virtual reality (VR) gaming traffic characteristics such as frame size, inter-arrival time, and latency need to be carefully studied as a first step toward scalable VR cloud service provisioning. To this end, in this paper we analyze the behavior of VR gaming traffic and Quality of Service (QoS) when VR rendering is conducted remotely in the cloud. We first build a VR testbed utilizing a cloud server, a commercial VR headset, and an off-the-shelf WiFi router. Using this testbed, we collect and process cloud VR gaming traffic data from different games under a number of network conditions …

eXtended reality (XR) technologies such as virtual reality and 360° stereoscopic streaming enable the concept of the Metaverse, an immersive virtual space for collaboration and interaction. To ensure high fidelity display of immersive media, the bandwidth, latency and network traffic patterns will need to be considered to ensure a user's Quality of Experience (QoE). In this article, examples and calculations are explored to demonstrate the requirements of the abovementioned parameters. Additionally, future methods such as network-awareness using reinforcement learning (RL) and XR content aware…
The adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies is increasing and thus IoT is seemingly shifting from hype to reality. However, the actual use of IoT over significant timescales has not been empirically analyzed. In other words the reality remains unexplored. Furthermore, despite the variety of IoT verticals, the use of IoT across vertical industries has not been compared. This paper uses a two-year IoT dataset from a major Finnish mobile network operator to investigate different aspects of cellular IoT traffic including temporal evolution and the use of IoT devices across industries. We…
As progressive densification of cells, deployment of Cloud-RAN and \ac{MEC} are coming into reality to support the ultra-low latency with high reliability in 5G and beyond, it generates mesh traffic pattern across fronthaul network. This led to evolution of PON architectural enhancements with virtualization in order to support such mesh traffic pattern. However, allocation of virtual PON slices dynamically over such mesh-PON based fronthaul transport is becoming a research challenge. In this paper, we provide a mixed analytical-iterative model to compute optimal virtual PON slice allocation, p…
Metasurfaces are envisaged to play a key role in next-generation wireless systems due to their powerful control over electromagnetic waves. The last decade has witnessed huge advances in this regard, shifting from static to programmable metasurfaces. The HyperSurface (HSF) paradigm takes one step further by integrating a network of controllers within the device with the aim of adding intelligence, connectivity, and autonomy. However, little is known about the traffic that this network will have to support as the target electromagnetic function or boundary conditions change. In this paper, we l…

These applications support many clients and impose a heavy requirement on network resources and computational resources. One key issue in the design of cost efficient mobile walkthrough applications is the data transmission between servers and mobile client devices. In this paper, we propose an effective progressive mesh transmission framework that …
Many current and future multimedia and industrial applications, like video streaming, eXtended Reality or remote robot control, are characterized by periodic data transmissions with strict latency and reliability constraints. In an effort to meet the stringent demand of such traffic sources, the WiGig standards support a contention-free channel access mechanism, named Service Period, that makes it possible to allocate dedicated time intervals to certain wireless stations. However, the standard only covers the fundamental aspects that ensure interoperability, while the actual schedule logic is …
In this work, we study the stability region of the two-user broadcast channel (BC) with bursty data arrivals and security constraints. We consider the scenario, where one of the receivers has a secrecy constraint and its packets need to be kept secret from the other receiver. This is achieved by employing full-duplexing at the receiver with the secrecy constraint, so that it transmits a jamming signal to impede the reception of the other receiver. In this context, the stability region of the two-user BC is characterized for the general decoding case. Then, assuming two different decoding schem…
Machine type communications (MTC) in 3G/4G networks is getting more attention recently due to bursty nature of traffic characteristics in contrast to Poisson type H2H traffic. A large number of methods have been suggested in the literature. In this paper we give a mathematical model on performance analysis of Disjoint Allocation (DA) and Joint Allocation (JA) methods for allocating preambles to M2M and H2H users. In an earlier work we had investigated the performance of two possible splitting preamble methods on collision probability and energy reduction for MTC subscribers. In this paper we d…
Thanks to recent advancements in the technology, eXtended Reality (XR) applications are gaining a lot of momentum, and they will surely become increasingly popular in the next decade. These new applications, however, require a step forward also in terms of models to simulate and analyze this type of traffic sources in modern communication networks, in order to guarantee to the users state of the art performance and Quality of Experience (QoE). Recognizing this need, in this work, we present a novel open-source traffic model, which researchers can use as a starting point both for improvements o…
