In this short note we provide a new proof of the recent result of Han and Nashimura on the separation of spherical convex sets established in arXiv:2002.06558. Our proof is based on a result stated in locally convex spaces.
We generalize Cauchy's celebrated theorem on the global rigidity of convex polyhedra in Euclidean $3$-space $\mathbb{E}^{3}$ to the context of circle polyhedra in the $2$-sphere $\mathbb{S}^{2}$. We prove that any two convex and proper non-unitary c-polyhedra with Möbius-congruent faces that are consistently oriented are Möbius-congruent. Our result implies the global rigidity of convex inversive distance circle packings in the Riemann sphere as well as that of certain hyperideal hyperbolic polyhedra in $\mathbb{H}^{3}$.
We use some recent work of Fung and an earlier paper of Hadwiger, Larman and Mani to extend the class of $n$-spheres which are known to inscribe an $(n + 1)$-rhomb in a given direction.
The topic of totally separable sphere packings is surveyed with a focus on regular constructions, uniform tilings, and contact number problems. An enumeration of all regular totally separable sphere packings in $\mathbb{R}^2$, $\mathbb{R}^3$, and $\mathbb{R}^4$ which are based on convex uniform tessellations, honeycombs, and tetracombs, respectively, is presented, as well as a construction of a family of regular totally separable sphere packings in $\mathbb{R}^d$ that is not based on a convex uniform $d$-honeycomb for $d \geq 3$.
Let $\mathcal{P}$ and $\mathcal{P}'$ be $3$-dimensional convex polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and $S \subseteq \mathbb{R}^3$ be a non-empty intersection of an open set with a sphere. As a consequence of a somewhat more general result it is proved that $\mathcal{P}$ and $\mathcal{P}'$ coincide up to translation and/or reflection in a point if $|\int_{\mathcal{P}} e^{-i\mathbf{s}\cdot\mathbf{x}} \,\mathbf{dx}| = |\int_{\mathcal{P}'} e^{-i\mathbf{s}\cdot\mathbf{x}} \,\mathbf{dx}|$ for all $\mathbf{s} \in S$. This can be applied to the field of crystallography regarding the question whether a nanopar…
In this paper, we show that the $C^1$-differentiability of the norm of a two-dimensional normed space depends only on distances between points of the unit sphere in two different ways. As a consequence, we see that any isometry between the spheres of normed planes $τ:S_X\to S_Y$ is linear, provided that there exist linearly independent $x,\overline{x}\in S_X$ where $S_X$ is not differentiable and that $S_X$ is piecewise differentiable. We end this work by showing that the isometry $τ:C_X\to C_Y$ is linear even if it is not an isometry between spheres: every isometry between (planar) Jordan pie…
The goal of this paper is to present a lower bound for the Mahler volume of at least 4-dimensional symmetric convex bodies. We define a computable dimension dependent constant through a 2-dimensional variational (max-min) procedure and demonstrate that the Mahler volume of every (at least 4-dimensional) symmetric convex body is greater than a (simple) function of this constant. Similar to the proof of Gromov's Waist of the Sphere Theorem in [18], our result is proved via localisation-type arguments obtained from a suitable measurable partition (or partitions) of the canonical sphere.
We say that a tiling separates discs of a packing in the Euclidean plane, if each tile contains exactly one member of the packing. It is a known elementary geometric problem to show that for each locally finite packing of circular discs, there exists a separating tiling with convex polygons. In this paper we show that this separating property remains true for circle packings on the sphere and in the hyperbolic plane. Moreover, we show that in the Euclidean plane circles are the only convex discs, whose packings with similar copies can be always separated by polygonal tilings. The analogous sta…
Given $n$ distinct points $\mathbf{x}_1, \ldots, \mathbf{x}_n$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, let $K$ denote their convex hull, which we assume to be $d$-dimensional, and $B = \partial K $ its $(d-1)$-dimensional boundary. We construct an explicit one-parameter family of continuous maps $\mathbf{f}_{\varepsilon} \colon \mathbb{S}^{d-1} \to K$ which, for $\varepsilon > 0$, are defined on the $(d-1)$-dimensional sphere and have the property that the images $\mathbf{f}_{\varepsilon}(\mathbb{S}^{d-1})$ are codimension $1$ submanifolds contained in the interior of $K$. Moreover, as the parameter $\varepsilon$ …
We prove an explicit combinatorial formula for the expected number of faces of the zero polytope of the homogeneous and isotropic Poisson hyperplane tessellation in $\mathbb R^d$. The expected $f$-vector is expressed through the coefficients of the polynomial $$ (1+ (d-1)^2x^2) (1+(d-3)^2 x^2) (1+(d-5)^2 x^2) \ldots. $$ Also, we compute explicitly the expected $f$-vector and the expected volume of the spherical convex hull of $n$ random points sampled uniformly and independently from the $d$-dimensional half-sphere. In the case when $n=d+2$, we compute the probability that this spherical conve…
Let $U_1,U_2,\ldots$ be random points sampled uniformly and independently from the $d$-dimensional upper half-sphere. We show that, as $n\to\infty$, the $f$-vector of the $(d+1)$-dimensional convex cone $C_n$ generated by $U_1,\ldots,U_n$ weakly converges to a certain limiting random vector, without any normalization. We also show convergence of all moments of the $f$-vector of $C_n$ and identify the limiting constants for the expectations. We prove that the expected Grassmann angles of $C_n$ can be expressed through the expected $f$-vector. This yields convergence of expected Grassmann angles…
We improve the estimates for the Ekeland--Hofer--Zehnder capacity of convex bodies by Gluskin and Ostrover. In the course of our argument we show that a closed characteristic of minimal action on the boundary of a centrally symmetric convex body in $\mathbb R^{2n}$ must itself be centrally symmetric, with generalizations to some other types of symmetry.
We continue the exploration of the relationship between conformal dimension and the separation profile by computing the separation of families of spheres in hyperbolic graphs whose boundaries are standard Sierpiński carpets and Menger sponges. In all cases, we show that the separation of these spheres is $n^{\frac{d-1}{d}}$ for some $d$ which is strictly smaller than the conformal dimension, in contrast to the case of rank 1 symmetric spaces of dimension $\geq 3$. The value of $d$ obtained naturally corresponds to a previously known lower bound on the conformal dimension of the associated frac…
A closed quasigeodesic on a convex polyhedron is a closed curve that is locally straight outside of the vertices, where it forms an angle at most $π$ on both sides. While the existence of a simple closed quasigeodesic on a convex polyhedron has been proved by Pogorelov in 1949, finding a polynomial-time algorithm to compute such a simple closed quasigeodesic has been repeatedly posed as an open problem. Our first contribution is to propose an extended definition of quasigeodesics in the intrinsic setting of (not necessarily convex) polyhedral spheres, and to prove the existence of a weakly sim…
