Dielectric response and conduction mechanism were investigated for a multiferroic BiFe$_{0.95}$Mn$_{0.05}$O$_3$ epitaxial thin film. A contribution from a thermally activated interface (0.37 eV) and the bulk of the film on the dielectric response were observed through the comparison between experimental results and equivalent circuit model. The low frequency interface relaxation signatures strongly suggest a Maxwell-Wagner space charge origin. The alternative current conductivity deduced from the model follows a power law frequency dependence suggesting a polaronic hopping mechanism while the low frequency limit is in perfect agreement with the direct current conduction mechanism. The current-voltage characteristics were indeed correlated with Schottky-Simmons interface limited transport with activation energy of 0.36 eV, close to the one extracted from the impedance analysis. Such analysis of the electrostatic landscape and dielectric behaviour may help to further understanding the anomalous photo-induced properties in the BiFeO$_3$ system.
Local conduction at domains and domains walls is investigated in BiFeO3 thin films containing mostly 71o domain walls. Measurements at room temperature reveal conduction through 71o domain walls. Conduction through domains could also be observed at high enough temperatures. It is found that, despite the lower conductivity of the domains, both are governed by the same mechanisms: in the low voltage regime electrons trapped at defect states are temperature-activated but the current is limited by the ferroelectric surface charges; in the large voltage regime, Schottky emission takes place and the…
In strongly correlated oxides, heterointerfaces, manipulating the interaction, frustration, and discontinuity of lattice, charge, orbital, and spin degrees of freedom, generate new possibilities for next generation devices. In this study, we went back to examine the existing oxide heterostructures and found the local conduction at the BiFeO3-CoFe2O4 vertical interface. In such hetero-nanostructure, the tubular interface, surrounding BiFeO3-CoFe2O4 vertical interface, can not only be the medium to the coupling between phases, but also be a new state of the matter. Our study demonstrates a novel…
Leakage current behavior of (BiFeO3)m(SrTiO3)m superlattice structures was studied and analyzed at different temperatures (303-473K) in the light of various models. While bulk limited Poole-Frenkel emission was observed to dominate the leakage current in the temperature range of 303 - 383 K, the space charge limited conduction was observed up to 473 K. With a Poole-Frenkel emission type of conduction, the activation energy range of 0.06 - 0.2 eV was calculated. The physical parameters, calculated from the analysis correlates with the intrinsic properties. The analysis of leakage current facili…
Epitaxial 200nm BiFe$_{0.95}$Mn$_{0.05}$O$_{3}$ (BFO) film was grown by pulsed laser deposition on (111) oriented SrTiO3 substrate buffered with a 50nm thick SrRuO$_{3}$ electrode. The BFO thin film shows a rhombohedral structure and a large remnant polarization of Pr = 104 $μ$C/cm$^{2}$. By comparing I(V) characteristics with different conduction models we reveal the presence of both bulk limited Poole-Frenkel and Schottky interface mechanisms and each one dominates in a specific range of temperature. At room temperature and under 10mW laser illumination, the as grown BFO film presents short-…
We have studied the polarization fatigue of La and Mg co-substituted BiFeO3 thin film, where a polarization peak is observed during the fatigue process. The origin of such anomalous behavior is analyzed on the basis of the defect evolution using temperature-dependent impedance spectroscopy. It shows that the motion of oxygen vacancies (VO..) is associated with a lower energy barrier, accompanied by the injection of electrons into the film during the fatigue process. A qualitative model is proposed to explain the fatigue behavior, which involves the modification of the Schottky barrier upon the…
BiFeO3 thin films were grown on Pt/c-sapphire substrates by pulsed laser deposition with different growth rates. With increasing growth rate the leakage current is decreased and the conduction mechanism changes from bulk-limited Poole-Frenkel emission to interface-limited Schottky emission. In the present work, we show that only the growth rate of the BiFeO3 films close to the metal contacts has to be increased in order to reduce the leakage current and to observe saturated polarization-electric field hysteresis loops.
BiFeO3 thin films epitaxially grown on SrRuO3-buffered (001)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates show orthogonal bundles of twin domains, each of which contains parallel and periodic 71o domain walls. A smaller amount of 109o domain walls are also present at the boundaries between two adjacent bundles. All as-grown twin walls display enhanced conductivity with respect to the domains during local probe measurements, due to the selective lowering of the Schottky barrier between the film and the AFM tip (see S. Farokhipoor and B. Noheda, Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 127601 (2011)). In this paper we further discu…
BiFeO3 thin films have been deposited on Pt/sapphire and Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates with pulsed laser deposition using the same growth conditions, respectively. Au was sputtered as the top electrode. The microscopic structure of the thin film varies by changing the underlying substrate. Thin films on Pt/sapphire are not resistively switchable due to the formation of Schottky contacts at both the top and the bottom interface. However, thin films on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si exhibit an obvious resistive switching behavior under forward bias. The conduction mechanisms in BiFeO3 thin films on Pt/sapphire and Pt…
Photovoltaic (PV) response of epitaxial BiFe0.95Mn0.05O3 thin film grown by pulsed laser deposition has been investigated on a broad range of temperature. Wavelength dependent photovoltaic effect shows the contribution of in gap level states most likely connected to the manganese doping on the B-site of the perovskite unit cells and presence of defects (Bi and O vacancies). The temperature dependent response of the PV response rules out electromigration and/or Schottky barriers as dominant mechanisms. This is corroborated with the observed switchable photovoltaic effect that can be explained e…
BiFeO3 thin films are deposited on FTO coated glass substrates using a simple sol-gel deposition technique, limiting thickness about 70 nm and Ag/BiFeO3/FTO RRAM devices are prepared. The devices showed low-voltage bipolar switching with the maximum Ion/Ioff ~ 450, and low set and reset voltages ~ 1.1 V and -1.5 V, respectively. The devices are stable against on-off cycles with ~ 104 s retention time without any significant degradation. The variations in the set and reset voltages are 0.4 V and 0.6 V, respectively. We found that ohmic and trap-controlled space charge limited conductions are re…
Fatigue failure in ferroelectrics has been intensively investigated in the past few decades. Most of the mechanisms discussed for ferroelectric fatigue have been built on the "hypothesis of variation in charged defects", which however are rarely evidenced by experimental observation. Here, using a combination of complex impedance spectra techniques, piezoresponse force microscopy and first-principles theory, we examine the microscopic evolution and redistribution of charged defects during the electrical cycling in BiFeO3 thin films. The dynamic formation and melting behaviors of oxygen vacancy…
The presence of superlattice reflections and detailed analyses of the powder neutron and x-ray diffraction data reveal that La rich (BF$_{0.50}$-LF$_{0.50}$)$_{0.50}$-(PT)$_{0.50}$ (BF-LF-PT) has ferroelectric rhombohedral crystal structure with space group \textit{$R3c$} at ambient conditions. The temperature dependence of lattice parameters, tilt angle, calculated polarization $(P_{s})$, volume, and integrated intensity of superlattice and magnetic reflections show an anomaly around 170 K. Impedance spectroscopy, dielectric and ac conductivity measurements were performed in temperature range…
We report the temperature dependent dielectric properties and impedance spectroscopy investigation of Na$_3$Zr$_2$Si$_2$PO$_{12}$ in the frequency range of 20 Hz--2 MHz. The Rietveld refinement of x-ray diffraction pattern confirms the monoclinic phase with C2/c space group. The {\it d.c.} resistivity behavior shows its strong insulating nature at low temperatures, and follows Arrhenius law of thermal conduction with an activation energy of 0.68 eV. The decrease in electric permittivity ($ε_r$) with frequency is explained based on the space polarization mechanism and its increment with tempera…
Among the recent discoveries of domain wall functionalities, the observation of electrical conduction at ferroelectric domain walls in the multiferroic insulator BiFeO3 has opened exciting new possibilities. Here, we report evidence of electrical conduction also at 180° ferroelectric domain walls in the simpler tetragonal ferroelectric PZT thin films. The observed conduction shows nonlinear, asymmetric current-voltage characteristics, thermal activation at high temperatures and high stability. We relate this behavior to the microscopic structure of the domain walls, allowing local defects segr…
There is growing evidence that domain walls in ferroics can possess emergent properties that are absent in bulk materials. For example, 180 domain walls in the ferroelectric-antiferromagnetic BiFeO3 are particularly interesting because they have been predicted to possess a range of intriguing behaviors; including electronic conduction and enhanced magnetization. To date, however, ordered arrays of such domain structures have not been reported. Here, we report the observation of 180 stripe nanodomains in (110)-oriented BiFeO3 thin films grown on orthorhombic GdScO3 (010)O substrates, and their …
The measurement of the material permittivity is often performed via an impedance measurement. In this case the measured permittivity includes the conduction contribution. Most of the time, the impedance-meters performing such measurement do not perform static measurement even if they can go to low frequencies. When the dipolar relaxation of the material leads to low frequency relaxation, separating the relaxation phenomenon from the conduction phenomenon can be difficult, especially when multiple relaxation phenomena superimpose. In this work we use the Kramers-Kronig relations to perform that…
Oxygen-vacancies-related dielectric relaxation and scaling behaviors of Bi0.9La0.1Fe0.98Mg0.02O3 (BLFM) thin film have been investigated by temperature-dependent impedance spectroscopy from 40 oC up to 200 oC. We found that hopping electrons and single-charged oxygen vacancies (VO.) coexist in the BLFM thin film and make contribution to dielectric response of grain and grain boundary respectively. The activation energy for VO. is shown to be 0.94 eV in the whole temperature range investigated, whereas the distinct activation energies for electrons are 0.136 eV below 110oC and 0.239 eV above 11…

X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement show formation of single phase ceramic with orthorhombic crystal structure (space group Pbam). The morphological study depicted a well-defined grain of size $\simeq$2μm. The optical studies were carried out by using UV-Vis spectrophotometer which shows a band gap of 1.53 eV and a green emission spectrum at 537 is observed in the Photoluminescence study. The frequency dependent dielectric study at various temperature revealed that the diele…
Temperature dependent impedance spectroscopy enables the many contributions to the dielectric and resistive properties of condensed matter to be deconvoluted and characterized separately. We have achieved this for multiferroic epitaxial thin films of BiFeO3 (BFO) and BiMnO3 (BMO), key examples of materials with strong magneto-electric coupling. We demonstrate that the true film capacitance of the epitaxial layers is similar to that of the electrode interface, making analysis of capacitance as a function of film thickness necessary to achieve deconvolution. We modeled non-Debye impedance respon…
Dielectric behavior and conductivity mechanism in lead-free (100-x)(Li0.12Na0.88)NbO3-xBaTiO3 (0 to x to 40) piezoelectric ceramics were investigated using impedance spectroscopy over a wide temperature (-100 oC to500 oC) and frequency range (0.1 Hz to1 MHz). The grain and grain boundary response as well as the relaxation processes at different frequencies and temperatures were also discussed. A low frequency dispersion in dielectric permittivity (LFDD), a typical characteristic of high-temperature behavior was observed both below and above the ferro-paraelectric phase transition temperature, …
The crossover between two different conduction mechanisms (variable range and small polaron hoppings) is probed utilizing a conjunction of thermally varying conductivity and impedance in polycrystalline Pr2NiTiO6 (PNT). A combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopic investigations authenticates the lower symmetric monoclinic structure for PNT. The conductivity, impedance and relaxation spectra highlight the combined contributions of the electrodes, grain-boundaries and grain microstructures to the carrier dynamics in PNT. The relaxation mechanism has a non-ideal nature with d…

Nanomaterials based on ZnO have been used to build glucose sensors due to its high isoelectric point, which is important when a protein like glucose oxidase (GOx) is attached to a surface. It also creates a biologically friendly environment to preserve the activity of the enzyme. In this work we study the electrical transport properties of ZnO thin films (TFs) and single crystals (SC) in contact with different solutions by using impedance spectroscopy. We have found that the composition of the liquid, by means of the charge of the ions, produces strong changes in the transport properties of th…
Ba1-xMgx(Ti0.9Zr0.1)O3(x= 0.01 and 0.02) ceramics were prepared using the conventional solid state reaction. Rietveld refinement performed on X-ray diffraction patterns indicates that the samples are tetragonal crystal structure with P4mm space group. By increasing Mg content from 1 to 2% the unit cell volume decreased. Likewise, the grains size is greatly reduced from 10 to 4 micrometer. The temperature dependence of dielectric constants at different frequencies exhibited typical relaxor ferroelectric characteristic, with sensitive dependence in frequency and temperature for ac conductivity. …
Exploring the Electrical Transport Properties and Insulator-Metal Transition in Polycrystalline Pr$_2$MgZrO$_6$: Insights from Conductivity and Impedance Spectroscopy
An impedance spectroscopy (IS) is a versatile tool to study the effect of grains (bulk), grain boundaries and electrode-electrolyte interface on dielectric and electrical properties of electro-ceramics. This study only focuses the high frequency (1 kHz to 10 MHz) probe of bulk ferroelectric capacitance near ferroelectric phase transition temperature (FPTT). The PZTFW single phase and PZTFW-CFO composites, respectively, have been investigated to understand the microstructure-property relation. Keeping in mind the complex microstructure of both systems, low frequency ( less than 1 kHZ ) impedanc…
We report the high temperature dielectric and {\it ac} impedance spectroscopy investigation of Nb substituted LaCo$_{0.7}$Nb$_{0.3}$O$_3$ polycrystalline sample. The maximum dielectric constant value was observed $\approx$1400 at around 400~K where the peak value shows a decreasing trend at higher temperatures and frequency. Similar variation was reflected in the dielectric loss (tan$δ$) behavior with temperature, which shows the thermal activation of the charge carriers in the material. The analysis of high temperature impedance spectroscopy data shows the grain and grain boundary contributio…
Although enhanced conductivity at ferroelectric domain boundaries has been found in BiFeO$_3$ films, Pb(Zr,Ti)O$_3$ films, and hexagonal rare-earth manganite single crystals, the mechanism of the domain wall conductivity is still under debate. Using conductive atomic force microscopy, we observe enhanced conductance at the electrically-neutral domain walls in semiconducting hexagonal ferroelectric TbMnO$_3$ thin films where the structure and polarization direction are strongly constrained along the c-axis. This result indicates that domain wall conductivity in ferroelectric rare-earth manganit…
We calculate the shift current response, which has been identified as the dominant mechanism for the bulk photovoltaic effect, for the polar compounds LiAsS$_\text{2}$, LiAsSe$_\text{2}$, and NaAsSe$_\text{2}$. We find that the magnitudes of the photovoltaic responses in the visible range for these compounds exceed the maximum response obtained for BiFeO$_\text{3}$ by 10 - 20 times. We correlate the high shift current response with the existence of $p$ states at both the valence and conduction band edges, as well as the dispersion of these bands, while also showing that high polarization is no…

Boron doped amorphous conducting carbon films show MI transition induced by doping. In this paper we discuss the ac conductivity of the films, which lie on the insulating side of MI transition. The ac conductivity data is analyzed as a function of frequency as well as temperature for both real as well as imaginary part of the conductivity data. The ac conductivity of these samples shows enhanced interaction effect at low temperature. The conduction mechanism at high frequency and at low temperature is due to the tunneling mechanism. At intermediate temperatures and at moderate frequencies, the…

Transition metal oxides have long been an area of interest for water electrocatalysis through the oxygen evolution and oxygen reduction reactions. Iron oxides, such as LaFeO$_{3}$, are particularly promising due to the favorable energy alignment of the valence and conduction bands comprised of Fe$^{3+}$ cations and the visible light band gap of such materials. In this work, we examine the role of band alignment on the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in the intrinsic semiconductor LaFeO$_{3}$ by growing epitaxial films of varying thicknesses on Nb-doped SrTiO$_{3}$. Using cycli…
We report in situ characterized TiO2 thin-films deposited on optical fiber, having thicknesses in the 20-100nm range, and having enhanced conductivity values of 700S/cm upon interacting with hydrogen. This conductivity was achieved in pure hydrogen at 800-900C, having a measured activation energy of 0.26eV of the hopping type. Given the variability in the observed results, it is postulated that the highest conductivity achievable may be much greater than what is currently demonstrated. The conductivity is retained after cooling to ambient temperatures as confirmed by Hall measurements, and sub…
