The majoron, a neutrinophilic pseudo-Goldstone boson conventionally arising in the context of neutrino mass models, can damp neutrino free-streaming and inject additional energy density into neutrinos prior to recombination. The combination of these effects for an eV-scale mass majoron has been shown to ameliorate the outstanding $H_0$ tension, however only if one introduces additional dark radiation at the level of $ΔN_{\rm eff} \sim 0.5$. We show here that models of low-scale leptogenesis can naturally source this dark radiation by generating a primordial population of majorons from the decays of GeV-scale sterile neutrinos in the early Universe. Using a posterior predictive distribution conditioned on Planck2018+BAO data, we show that the value of $H_0$ observed by the SH$_0$ES collaboration is expected to occur at the level of $\sim 10\%$ in the primordial majoron cosmology (to be compared with $\sim 0.1\%$ in the case of $Λ$CDM). This insight provides an intriguing connection between the neutrino mass mechanism, the baryon asymmetry of the Universe, and the discrepant measurements of $H_0$.
We perform the first numerical calculation of the interplay between thermal and black hole induced leptogenesis, demonstrating that the right-handed neutrino surplus produced during the evaporation only partially mitigates the entropy dilution suffered by the thermal component. As such, the intermediate-mass regime of the right-handed neutrinos, $10^6{\rm~GeV} \lesssim M_{N} \lesssim 10^{9}{\rm~GeV}$, could not explain the observed baryon asymmetry even for fine-tuned scenarios if there existed a primordial black hole dominated era, consistent with initial black hole masses of $M_i \gtrsim \ma…
We propose a novel way of probing high scale Dirac leptogenesis, a viable alternative to canonical leptogenesis scenario where the total lepton number is conserved, keeping light standard model (SM) neutrinos purely Dirac. The simplest possible seesaw mechanism for generating light Dirac neutrinos involve heavy singlet Dirac fermions and a singlet scalar. In addition to unbroken global lepton number, a discrete $Z_2$ symmetry is imposed to forbid direct coupling between right and left chiral parts of light Dirac neutrino. Generating light Dirac neutrino mass requires the singlet scalar to acqu…
We calculate the baryonic asymmetry of the universe in the baryogenesis-via-leptogenesis framework, assuming first a quark-lepton symmetry and then a charged-neutral lepton symmetry. We match the results with the experimentally favoured range. In the first case all the oscillation solutions to the solar neutrino problem, except the large mixing matter solution, can lead to the allowed range, but with fine tuning of the parameters. In the second case the general result is quite similar. Some related theoretical hints are discussed.
The link between low-energy CP violation and leptogenesis became more accessible with the understanding of flavor effects. However, a definite well-motivated model where such a link occurs was still lacking. Adjoint SU(5) is a simple grand unified theory where neutrino masses are generated through the Type I and Type III seesaw mechanisms, and the lepton asymmetry is generated by the fermionic triplet responsible for the Type III seesaw. We focus exclusively on the case of inverted hierarchy for neutrinos, and we show that successful flavored leptogenesis in this theory strongly points towards…
In this short review I discuss how high energy (type I) seesaw models can be nicely embedded within grand-unified models and reproduce the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry with leptogenesis. In particular, after discussing general features and results in leptogenesis, I focus on $SO(10)$-inspired leptogenesis and on a particular solution, the strong thermal $SO(10)$-inspired solution, that provides an interesting way to understand neutrino mixing parameters: the non-vanishing reactor mixing angle, the emerging negative sign of $\sinδ$ and the slight hints favouring normally ordered neutrin…
The time delay measured between the images of gravitationally lensed quasars probes a combination of the angular diameter distance to the source-lens system and the mass density profile of the lens. Observational campaigns to measure such systems have reported a determination of the Hubble parameter H0 that shows significant tension with independent determination based on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and large scale structure (LSS). We show that lens mass models that exhibit a cored component, coexisting with a cusp, probe a degenerate direction in the lens model parameter space, bein…
The spontaneous breaking of B-L symmetry naturally accounts for the small observed neutrino masses via the seesaw mechanism. We have recently shown that the cosmological realization of B-L breaking in a supersymmetric theory can successfully generate the initial conditions of the hot early universe, i.e. entropy, baryon asymmetry and dark matter, if the gravitino is the lightest superparticle (LSP). This implies relations between neutrino and superparticle masses. Here we extend our analysis to the case of very heavy gravitinos which are motivated by hints for the Higgs boson at the LHC. We fi…
A possible interplay between the two terms of the general type-II seesaw formula is exercised which leads to the generation of nonzero $θ_{13}$. The specific flavor structure of the model, guided by the $A_4 \times Z_4 \times Z_3$ symmetry and accompanied with the Standard Model singlet flavons, yields the conventional seesaw contribution to produce the tribimaximal lepton mixing which is further corrected by the presence of the $SU(2)_L$ triplet contribution to accommodate $θ_{13}$. We consider the CP symmetry to be spontaneously broken by the complex vacuum expectation value (vev) of a singl…
The minimal type-I seesaw framework with texture-zero Yukawa and mass matrices inspired by Occam's razor is incompatible with normally-ordered neutrino masses (currently preferred by data) when lepton mixing originates solely from the neutrino sector. Moreover, the lightest right-handed neutrino mass required to generate the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe via leptogenesis ($M_1 \sim 10^{14}$ GeV) is in conflict with vanilla scenarios for Peccei-Quinn) axion dark matter where the reheating temperature of the Universe is typically below $10^{12}$ GeV. In this work, we present a new Oc…
We explore the possibility of lepton number violation (LNV) manifesting in the rare kaon decay $K\toπνν$, and its consequences for radiative neutrino mass generation and the washout of Lepton asymmetry in high-scale leptogenesis scenarios. We perform the analysis in a model-independent framework, the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT), and discuss the possible LNV nature of the rare kaon decay in the context of the currently operating NA62 experiment at CERN. We find that, in case of a LNV interaction, its detection would put high-scale leptogenesis under tension and would hint to s…
On the frequency-amplitude plane, Gravitational Waves (GWs) from cosmic strings show a flat plateau at higher frequencies due to the string loop dynamics in standard radiation dominated post-inflationary epoch. The spectrum may show an abrupt upward or a downward trend beyond a turning point frequency $f_*$, if the primordial dark age prior to the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), exhibits non-standard cosmic histories. We argue that such a spectral break followed by a rising GW amplitude which is a consequence of a post-inflationary equation of state ($ω>1/3$) stiffer than the radiation ($ω=1/3…
The recent results by the Fermilab Lattice and MILC collaborations on the hadronic matrix elements entering $B_{d,s}-\bar B_{d,s}$ mixing show a significant tension of the measured values of the mass differences $ΔM_{d,s}$ with their SM predictions. We review the implications of these results in the context of Constrained Minimal Flavour Violation models. In these models, the CKM elements $γ$ and $|V_{ub}|/|V_{cb}|$ can be determined from $B_{d,s}-\bar B_{d,s}$ mixing observables, yielding a prediction for $γ$ below its tree-level value. Determining subsequently $|V_{cb}|$ from the measured va…
In this work we investigate the possibility that dark matter and (massive) neutrinos can interact via a simple, constant cross section. Building on previous numerical efforts, we constrain this model with CMB, BAO and, in particular, Lyman-$α$ data. We find that the latter hint to a significant departure from $Λ$CDM, with a preference for an interaction strength about 3$σ$ away from zero. We trace the origin of this preference back to the additional tilt that the interacting scenario can imprint on the Lyman-$α$ flux power spectrum, solving a well-known tension in the determination of this qua…
We review the tensions with the standard three-neutrino framework for neutrino oscillation. These tensions hint at the possible existence of sterile neutrinos. We briefly describe some of the diverse ideas for probing the existence of such neutrinos in a definitive way through future experiments.
Supersymmetric thermal leptogenesis with a hierarchical right-handed neutrino mass spectrum requires the mass of the lightest right-handed neutrino to be heavier than about 10^9 GeV. This is in conflict with the upper bound on the reheating temperature which is found by imposing that the gravitinos generated during the reheating stage after inflation do not jeopardize successful nucleosynthesis. In this paper we show that a solution to this tension is actually already incorporated in the framework, because of the presence of flat directions in the supersymmetric scalar potential. Massive right…
In this article, we review the status of the tension between the long-baseline accelerator neutrino experiments T2K and NO$ν$A. The tension arises mostly due to the mismatch in the appearance data of the two experiments. We explain how this tension arises based on $ν_μ\to ν_e$ and $\barν_μ\to \barν_e$ oscillation probabilities. We define the reference point of vacuum oscillation, maximal $θ_{23}$ and $δ_{CP}=0$ and compute the $ν_e/\barν_e$ appearance events for each experiment. We then study the effects of deviating the unknown parameters from the reference point and the compatibility of any …
Encouraged by the recent results from neutrino oscillation experiments, we perform an analytical study of $SO(10)$-inspired models and leptogenesis with hierarchical right-handed (RH) neutrino spectrum. Under the approximation of negligible misalignment between the neutrino Yukawa basis and the charged lepton basis, we find an analytical expression for the final asymmetry directly in terms of the low energy neutrino parameters that fully reproduces previous numerical results. This expression also shows that is possible to identify an effective leptogenesis phase for these models. When we also …
The $Λ$CDM cosmological model provides to first approximation a good description of the universe, but various tensions with data, most notably Hubble tension, persist. In this work we confront $Λ$CDM with the Pantheon Type Ia supernovae dataset and perform a two-parameter fit of the distance modulus for a running cut-off $z_{\textrm{max}}$. We observe that in a window between $z_{\textrm{max}} \approx 0.1$ and $z_{\textrm{max}} \approx 0.16$ there is a 1 - 2 $σ$ discrepancy with the Planck value $ω_m = 0.315 \pm 0.007$, which points to a potential matter underdensity. For high-energy theorists…
An only early or only late time alteration to $Λ$CDM has been inadequate at resolving both the $H_0$ and $S_8$ tensions simultaneously; however, a combination of early and late time alterations to $Λ$CDM can provide a solution to both tensions. As an illustration, we examine a combined Early Dark Energy - Decaying Dark Matter model. While early dark energy has the ability to resolve the $H_0$ tension, it leads to a discrepancy in $S_8$ measurements. We show that the addition of decaying dark matter helps resolve the $S_8$ discrepancy that would otherwise be enhanced in an early dark energy mod…
General Relativity (GR) is consistent with a wide range of experiments/observations from millimeter scales up to galactic scales and beyond. However, there are reasons to believe that GR may need to be modified because it includes singularities (it is an incomplete theory) and also it requires fine-tuning to explain the accelerating expansion of the universe through the cosmological constant. Thus, it is important to check various experiments and observations beyond the above range of scales for possible hints of deviations from the predictions of GR. If such hints are found it is important to…
We revisit the hybrid inflation model gauged by $U(1)_{B-L}$ extension of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) in a no-scale background. Considering a single predictive framework, we study inflation, leptogenesis, gavitino cosmology, and the stochastic background of gravitational waves produced by metastable cosmic strings. The spontaneous breaking of $U(1)_{B-L}$ at the end of inflation produces a network of metastable cosmic strings while, the interaction between $U(1)_{B-L}$ Higgs field and the neutrinos generate heavy Majorana masses for the right-handed neutrinos. The heavy Ma…

The Hubble parameter inferred from cosmic microwave background observations is consistently lower than that from local measurements, which could hint towards new physics. Solutions to the Hubble tension typically require a sizable amount of extra radiation $ΔN^{}_{\rm eff}$ during recombination. However, the amount of $ΔN^{}_{\rm eff}$ in the early Universe is unavoidably constrained by Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), which causes problems for such solutions. We present a possibility to evade this problem by introducing neutrino self-interactions via a simple Majoron-like coupling. The scalar …
We consider a type-I seesaw framework with a flavour symmetry from the series of non-abelian groups $Δ(3 n^2)$ and $Δ(6 n^2)$ and a CP symmetry. Breaking these symmetries non-trivially results in the right-handed neutrinos being degenerate in mass up to possible (further symmetry-breaking) splittings $κ$ and $λ$, while the neutrino Yukawa coupling matrix encodes the entire flavour structure in the neutrino sector. For a fixed combination of flavour and CP symmetry and residual groups, this matrix has five real free parameters. Four of them are set by light neutrino masses and data on lepton mi…
We investigate low-scale resonant leptogenesis in an $SU(5) \times \mathcal{T}_{13}$ model where a single high energy phase in the complex Tribimaximal seesaw mixing produces the yet-to-be-observed low energy Dirac and Majorana ${CP}$ phases. A fourth right-handed neutrino, required to generate viable light neutrino masses within this scenario, also turns out to be necessary for successful resonant leptogenesis where $CP$ asymmetry is produced by the same high energy phase. We derive a lower bound on the right-handed neutrino mass spectrum in the $\mathrm{GeV}$ range, where part of the paramet…
We study the scenario in which the Standard model is augmented by three generations of right-handed neutrinos and a scalar doublet. The newly introduced fields share an odd charge under a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ parity symmetry. This model, commonly known as "Scotogenic", was designed to provide a mechanism for active neutrino mass generation as well as a viable dark matter candidate. In this paper we consider a scenario in which the dark matter particle is at the keV-scale. Such particle is free from X-ray limits due to the unbroken parity symmetry that forbids the mixing between active and right-hand…
We use an up to date compilation of Tully-Fisher data to search for transitions in the evolution of the Tully-Fisher relation. Using an up to date data compilation, we find hints at $\approx 3σ$ level for a transition at critical distances $D_c \simeq 9 Mpc$ and $D_c \simeq 17 Mpc$. We split the full sample in two subsamples according to the measured galaxy distance with respect to a splitting distance $D_c$ and identify the likelihood of the best fit slope and intercept of one sample with respect to the best fit corresponding values of the other sample. For $D_c \simeq 9 Mpc$ and $D_c \simeq …
We consider decaying dark matter (DDM) as a resolution to the possible tension between cosmic microwave background (CMB) and weak lensing (WL) based determinations of the amplitude of matter fluctuations, $σ_8$. We perform N-body simulations in a model where dark matter decays into dark radiation and develop an accurate fitting formula for the non-linear matter power spectrum, which enables us to test the DDM model by the combined measurements of CMB, WL and the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO). We employ a Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis to examine the overlap of posterior distributions of…
The current cosmological probes have provided a fantastic confirmation of the standard $Λ$ Cold Dark Matter cosmological model, that has been constrained with unprecedented accuracy. However, with the increase of the experimental sensitivity a few statistically significant tensions between different independent cosmological datasets emerged. While these tensions can be in portion the result of systematic errors, the persistence after several years of accurate analysis strongly hints at cracks in the standard cosmological scenario and the need for new physics. In this Letter of Interest we will…
Despite the spectacular discovery of an astrophysical neutrino flux by IceCube in 2013, its origin remains a mystery. Whatever its sources, we expect the neutrino flux to be accompanied by a comparable gamma-ray flux. These photons should be degraded in energy by electromagnetic cascades and contribute to the diffuse GeV-TeV flux precisely measured by the Fermi-LAT. Population studies have also permitted to identify the main classes of contributors to this flux, which at the same time have not been associated with major neutrino sources in cross-correlation studies. These considerations allow …
Scenarios where gravitinos with GeV masses make up dark matter are known to be in tension with high reheating temperatures, as required by e.g. thermal leptogenesis. This tension comes from the longevity of the NLSPs, which can destroy the successful predictions of the standard primordial nucleosynthesis. However, a small violation of matter parity can open new decay channels for the NLSP, avoiding the BBN problems, while being compatible with experimental cosmic-ray constraints. In this paper, we propose a model where matter parity, which we assume to be embedded in the U(1)_{B-L} gauge symme…
Our herein described combined analysis of the latest neutrino oscillation data presented at the Neutrino2020 conference shows that previous hints for the neutrino mass ordering have significantly decreased, and normal ordering (NO) is favored only at the $1.6σ$ level. Combined with the $χ^2$ map provided by Super-Kamiokande for their atmospheric neutrino data analysis the hint for NO is at $2.7σ$. The CP conserving value $δ_\text{CP} = 180^\circ$ is within $0.6σ$ of the global best fit point. Only if we restrict to inverted mass ordering, CP violation is favored at the $\sim 3σ$ level. We disc…

A number of challenges to the standard $Λ$CDM model have been emerging during the past few years as the accuracy of cosmological observations improves. In this review we discuss in a unified manner many existing signals in cosmological and astrophysical data that appear to be in some tension ($2σ$ or larger) with the standard $Λ$CDM model as specified by the Cosmological Principle, General Relativity and the Planck18 parameter values. In addition to the well-studied $5σ$ challenge of $Λ$CDM (the Hubble $H_0$ tension) and other well known tensions (the growth tension, and the lensing amplitude …
The CDMS II experiment has observed three events which may have arisen from weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter (DM) with mass of order 9 GeV colliding with nuclei. Although the implied WIMP parameter region seems to be excluded by limits from the XENON experiments, it is interesting that most of this tension can go away if the WIMP-nucleon interaction violates isospin. This motivates us to explore some of the implications for models in which a real gauge-singlet scalar particle, the darkon, serves as the WIMP, taking into account the recent discovery of a Higgs boson at the…
Leptoquarks are prime candidates for explaining the intriguing hints for lepton flavour universality violation. In particular, the $SU(2)_L$ doublet of scalar leptoquarks $S_2$ is capable of providing an explanation for the tensions between the measurements and the Standard Model predictions in $(g-2)_μ$, $b\to s\ell^+ \ell^-$ and $b\to cτν$ processes, as well as in non-resonant di-electron production. However, in the minimal setup with a single leptoquark generation, a common explanation for all these issues is not possible as this would lead to unacceptably large charged lepton flavour viola…
Neutrino oscillations involving eV-scale neutrino mass states are investigated in the context of global neutrino oscillation data including short and long-baseline accelerator, reactor, and radioactive source experiments, as well as atmospheric and solar neutrinos. We consider sterile neutrino mass schemes involving one or two mass-squared differences at the eV^2 scale denoted by 3+1, 3+2, and 1+3+1. We discuss the hints for eV-scale neutrinos from nu_e disappearance (reactor and Gallium anomalies) and nu_mu->nu_e appearance (LSND and MiniBooNE) searches, and we present constraints on sterile …
The tension between measurements of the Hubble constant obtained at different redshifts may provide a hint of new physics active in the relatively early universe, around the epoch of matter-radiation equality. A leading paradigm to resolve the tension is a period of early dark energy, in which a scalar field contributes a subdominant part of the energy budget of the universe at this time. This scenario faces significant fine-tuning problems which can be ameliorated by a non-trivial coupling of the scalar to the standard model neutrinos. These become non-relativistic close to the time of matter…
Leptonic CP Violating Phase $ δ_{CP} $ in the light neutrino sector and leptogenesis via present matter antimatter asymmetry of the Universe entails each other. Probing CP violation in light neutrino oscillation is one of the challenging tasks today. The reactor mixing angle $ θ_{13} $ measured in reactor experiments, LBL, DUNE with high precision in neutrino experiments indicates towards the vast dimension of scope to detect $ δ_{CP} $. The correlation between leptonic Dirac CPV phase $ δ_{CP} $, reactor mixing angle $ θ_{13} $, lightest neutrino mass $ m_{1} $ and matter antimatter asymmetry…
The updated measurements from the LHCb and SH0ES collaborations have respectively strengthened the deviations of the ratio $R_{K}$ in rare semi-leptonic $B$-meson decays and the present-day Hubble parameter $H_0$ in the Universe, implying tantalizing hints of new physics beyond the Standard Model. In this paper, we consider a simple flavor-specific two-Higgs-doublet model, where the long-standing $R_{K^{(*)}}$ anomalies can be addressed by a one-flavor right-handed neutrino. One of the intriguing predictions resulting from the parameter space for the $R_{K^{(*)}}$ resolution under flavor- and …
In light of the increasing hints of new physics at the muon $g-2$ and neutrino oscillation experiments, we consider the recently observed tension in the long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments as a potential indication of Lorentz invariance violation. For this purpose, the latest data from T2K and NO$ν$A is analysed in presence of non-minimal Lorentz invariance violation. Indeed, we find that isotropic violation in dimensions $D =$ 4, 5 and 6 can alleviate the tension in neutrino oscillation data by 0.4$-$2.4$σ$ CL significance, with the isotropic coefficient $γ^{(5)}_{ττ} =$ 3.58$\time…
The $Λ$CDM prediction of $S_8\equivσ_8(Ω_m/0.3)^{0.5}$ -- where $σ_8$ is the root mean square of matter fluctuations on a 8 $h^{-1}$Mpc scale -- once calibrated on Planck CMB data is $2-3σ$ lower than its direct estimate by a number of weak lensing surveys. In this paper, we explore the possibility that the '$S_8$-tension' is due to a non-thermal hot dark matter (HDM) fractional contribution to the universe energy density leading to a power suppression at small-scales in the matter power spectrum. Any HDM models can be characterized by its effective mass $ m_{sp}^{\rm eff}$ and its contributio…

Experimental hints for lepton flavor universality violation in beauty-quark decay both in neutral- and charged-current transitions require an extension of the Standard Model for which scalar leptoquarks (LQs) are the prime candidates. Besides, these same LQs can resolve the long-standing tension in the muon and the recently reported deviation in the electron $g-2$ anomalies. These tantalizing flavor anomalies have discrepancies in the range of $2.5σ-4.2σ$, indicating that the Standard Model of particle physics may finally be cracking. In this Letter, we propose a resolution to all these anomal…
