A rectangular thin elastic sheet is deformed by forcing a contact between two points at the middle of its length. A transition to buckling with stress focusing is reported for the sheets sufficiently narrow with a critical width proportional to the sheet length with an exponent 2/3 in the small thickness limit. Additionally, a spring network model is solved to explore the thick sheet limit and to validate the scaling behaviour of the transition in the thin sheet limit. The numerical results reveal that buckling does not exist for the thickest sheets and a stability criterion is established for the buckling of a curved sheet.
Geometric stress focusing, e.g. in a crumpled sheet, creates point-like vertices that terminate in a characteristic local crescent shape. The observed scaling of the size of this crescent is an open question in the stress focusing of elastic thin sheets. According to experiments and simulations, this size depends on the outer dimension of the sheet, but intuition and rudimentary energy balance indicate it should only depend on the sheet thickness. We address this discrepancy by modeling the observed crescent with a more geometric approach, where we treat the crescent as a curved crease in an i…
Crumpled thin sheets are complex fractal structures whose physical properties are influenced by a hierarchy of ridges. In this Letter, we report experiments that measure the stress-strain relation and show the coexistence of phases in the stretching of crumpled surfaces. The pull stress showed a change from a linear Hookean regime to a sublinear scaling with an exponent of $0.65 \pm 0.03$, which is identified with the Hurst exponent of the crumpled sheets. The stress fluctuations are studied, the statistical distribution of force peaks is analyzed and it is shown how the unpacking of crumpled …
Ordering configurations of a director field on a curved membrane induce stress. In this work, we present a theoretical framework to calculate the stress tensor and the torque as a consequence of the nematic ordering; we use the variational principle and invariance of the energy under Euclidean motions. Euler-Lagrange equations of the membrane as well as the corresponding boundary conditions also appear as natural results. The stress tensor found includes attraction-repulsion forces between defects; likewise, defects are attracted to patches with the same sign in gaussian curvature. These force…
The preference of thin flat sheets to bend rather than stretch, combined with results from Geometry, mean that changes in a thin sheet's Gaussian curvature are prohibitively expensive. As a result, an imposed curvature in one principal direction inhibits bending in the other: so-called curvature-induced rigidity. Here, we study the buckling behaviour of a rectangular strip of finite thickness held horizontally in a gravitational field, but with a transverse curvature imposed at one end. The finite thickness of the sheet limits the efficacy of curvature-induced rigidity in two ways: (i) finite …
Although thin films are typically manufactured in planar sheets or rolls, they are often forced into three-dimensional shapes, producing a plethora of structures across multiple length-scales. Existing theoretical approaches have made progress by separating the behaviors at different scales and limiting their scope to one. Under large confinement, a geometric model has been proposed to predict the gross shape of the sheet, which averages out the fine features. However, the actual meaning of the gross shape, and how it constrains the fine features, remains unclear. Here, we study a thin-membran…
It is well known that an annular sheet could wrinkle as a result of axisymmetric tensile loads applied at the edges. In this system, regions under compression appear due to Poisson effect in the azimuthal direction yielding an incompatible excess in length, so that the membrane has to buckle out of the plane. Then, radial wrinkles emerge following the direction of the tensile principal stress. This so called Lamé configuration has been widely used as theoretical and experimental paradigms for wrinkling instabilities. In this work, we explore the consequences of changing the geometry of this mo…
Thin elastic solids are easily deformed into a myriad of three-dimensional shapes, which may contain sharp localized structures as in a crumpled candy wrapper, or have smooth and diffuse features like the undulating edge of a flower. Anticipating and controlling these morphologies is crucial to a variety of applications involving textiles, synthetic skins, and inflatable structures. Here we show that a "wrinkle-to-crumple" transition, previously observed in specific settings, is a ubiquitous response for confined sheets. This unified picture is borne out of a suite of model experiments on poly…
A continuum mechanical framework is developed for determining a) the class of stress-free deformed shapes and corresponding director distributions on the undeformed configuration of a nematic glass membrane that has a prescribed spontaneous stretch field and b) the class of undeformed configurations and corresponding director distributions on it resulting in a stress-free \emph{given} deformed shape of a nematic glass sheet with a prescribed spontaneous stretch field. The proposed solution rests on an understanding of how the Lagrangian dyad of a deformation of a membrane maps into the Euleria…
We address the fully-developed wrinkle pattern formed upon stretching a Hookean, rectangular-shaped sheet, when the longitudinal tensile load induces transverse compression that far exceeds the stability threshold of a purely planar deformation. At this "far from threshold" parameter regime, which has been the subject of the celebrated Cerda-Mahadevan (CM) model, the wrinkle pattern expands throughout the length of the sheet and the characteristic wavelength of undulations is much smaller than its width. Employing Surface Evolver simulations over a range of sheet thicknesses and tensile loads …
We investigate the deformation of a longitudinally stretched rectangular sheet which is clamped at two opposite boundaries and free otherwise with experiments, numerical analysis and asymptotic analysis of the biharmonic elastic equation governing their planar equilibrium configurations. The displacement field of the sheet is measured by tracking embedded fluorescent tracers with a digital image correlation (DIC) technique. The experiments and numerical finite element analysis (FEA) are found to be in overall good agreement except at the very corners where large deformations occur. We find tha…

We derive an expression for the velocity profile of a pressure-driven yield-stress Bingham fluid flowing around a 2D concentric annulus. The formula requires the numerical solution of a nonlinear equation for the positions of the yield surfaces. The results allow the prediction of the effects of channel curvature on the pressure gradient required to initiate flow for given yield stress, and for the width of the plug region and the flux through the channel at different curvatures.
The mechanics of lower dimensional elastic structures depends strongly on the geometry of their stress-free state. Elastic deformations separate into in-plane stretching and lower energy out-of-plane bending deformations. For elastic structures with a curved stress-free state, these two elastic modes are coupled within linear elasticity. We investigate the effect of that curvature-induced coupling on wave propagation in lower dimensional elastic structures, focusing on the simplest example -- a curved elastic rod. We find that the dispersion relation of the waves becomes gapped in the presence…
Thin sheets that are forced at their boundaries develop a variety of shapes aimed at minimising elastic energy by curving spontaneously in ways that break the symmetry of the sheet and the forcing. Characterising such buckling generally requires detailed analysis. Here, we follow a complementary approach, applicable to axisymmetric systems. It aims to predict the qualitative nature of any buckling using only the simple axisymmetric geometry of the initial system. We view an axisymmetric deformation according to the displacement it imposes on the radial lines making up the sheet. Thus, e.g., in…
Atomically thin sheets, such as graphene, are widely used in nanotechnology. Recently they have also been used in applications including kirigami and self-folding origami, where it becomes important to understand how they respond to external loads. Motivated by this, we investigate how isotropic sheets respond to uniaxial tension by employing the self-consistent screening analysis method and molecular dynamics simulations. Previously, it was shown that for freely suspended sheets thermal fluctuations effectively renormalize elastic constants, which become scale-dependent beyond a characteristi…
An isolated positive wedge disclination deforms an initially flat elastic sheet into a perfect cone when the sheet is of infinite extent and is elastically inextensible. The latter requires the elastic stretching strains to be vanishingly small. In this paper, rigorous analytical and numerical results are obtained for the disclination induced deformed shape and stress field of a bounded F{ö}ppl-von K{á}rm{á}n elastic sheet with finite extensibility, while emphasising the deviations from the perfect cone solution. In particular, the Gaussian curvature field is no longer localised as a Dirac sin…
We perform Brownian dynamics simulations of semiflexible colloidal sheets with hydrodynamic interactions and thermal fluctuations in shear flow. As a function of the ratio of bending rigidity to shear energy (a dimensionless quantity we denote $S$) and the ratio of bending rigidity to thermal energy, we observe a dynamical transition from stochastic flipping to crumpling and continuous tumbling. This dynamical transition is broadened by thermal fluctuations, and the value of $S$ at which it occurs is consistent with the onset of chaotic dynamics found for athermal sheets. The effects of differ…
We study the dependence of the fracture surface energy on the pulling velocity for nano-porous polypropylene (PP) sheets to find two components: the static and dynamic ones. We show that these terms can be interpreted respectively as plastoelastic and viscoelastic components, as has been shown for soft polyethylene (PE) foams in a previous work. Considering significant differences in the pore size, volume fraction and Young's modulus of the present PP and previous PE sheets, the present results suggest a universal physical mechanism for fracture of porous polymer sheets. The simple physical in…
We consider the equilibrium of liquid droplets sitting on thin elastic sheets that are subject to a boundary tension and/or are clamped at their edge. We use scaling arguments, together with a detailed analysis based on the Föppl-von-Kármán equations, to show that the presence of the droplet may significantly alter the stress locally if the tension in the dry sheet is weak compared to an intrinsic elasto-capillary tension scale $γ^{2/3}(Et)^{1/3}$ (with $γ$ the droplet surface tension, $t$ the sheet thickness and $E$ its Young modulus). Our detailed analysis suggests that some recent experimen…
Experimentally measuring the elastic properties of thin biological surfaces is non-trivial, particularly when they are curved. One technique that may be used is the indentation of a thin sheet of material by a rigid indenter, whilst measuring the applied force and displacement. This gives immediate information on the fracture strength of the material (from the force required to puncture), but it is also theoretically possible to determine the elastic properties by comparing the resulting force-displacement curves with a mathematical model. Existing mathematical studies generally assume that th…
