We study the behavior of thin elastic sheets that are bent and strained under the influence of weak, smooth confinement. We show that the emerging shapes exhibit the coexistence of two types of domains that differ in their characteristic stress distributions and energies, and reflect different constraints. A focused-stress patch is subject to a geometric, piecewise-inextensibility constraint, whereas a diffuse-stress region is characterized by a mechanical constraint - the dominance of a single component of the stress tensor. We discuss the implications of our findings for the analysis of elastic sheets that are subject to various types of forcing.
A growing or compressed thin elastic sheet adhered to a rigid substrate can exhibit a buckling instability, forming an inward hump. Our study shows that the strip morphology depends on the delicate balance between the compression energy and the bending energy. We find that this instability is a first order phase transition between the adhered solution and the buckled solution whose main control parameter is related to the sheet stretchability. In the nearly- unstretchable regime we provide an analytic expression for the critical threshold. Compressibility is the key assumption which allows us …
Thin elastic sheets supported on compliant media form wrinkles under lateral compression. Since the lateral pressure is coupled to the sheet's deformation, varying it periodically in time creates a parametric excitation. We study the resulting parametric resonance of wrinkling modes in sheets supported on semi-infinite elastic or viscoelastic media, at pressures smaller than the critical pressure of static wrinkling. We find distinctive behaviors as a function of excitation amplitude and frequency, including (a) a different dependence of the dynamic wrinkle wavelength on sheet thickness compar…
We study the onset of delamination blisters in a growing elastic sheet adhered to a flat stiff substrate. When the ends of the sheet are kept fixed, its growth arouses residual stresses that lead to delamination. This instability can be viewed as a discontinuous buckling between the complete adhered solution and the buckled solution. We provide an analytic expression for the critical deformation at which the instability occurs. We show that the critical threshold scales with a single dimensionless parameter that comprises information from the geometry of the sheet, the mechanical parameters of…
We consider three-dimensional reshaping of thin nemato-elastic sheets containing half-charged defects upon nematic-isotropic transition. Gaussian curvature, that can be evaluated analytically when the nematic texture is known, differs from zero in the entire domain and has a dipole or hexapole singularity, respectively, at defects of positive or negative sign. The latter kind of defects appears in not simply connected domains. Three-dimensional shapes dependent on boundary anchoring are obtained with the help of finite element computations.
We report an experimental study of the development of orientational order in a crumpled sheet, with a particular focus on the role played by the geometry of confinement. Our experiments are performed on elastomeric sheets immersed in a fluid, so that the effects of plasticity and friction are suppressed. When the sheet is crumpled either axially or radially within a cylinder, we find that the sheet aligns with the flat or the curved wall, depending on the aspect ratio of the cylinder. Nematic correlations develop between the normals of the sheets at relatively low volume fractions and the crum…
Recent experiments have imposed controlled swelling patterns on thin polymer films, which subsequently buckle into three-dimensional shapes. We develop a solution to the design problem suggested by such systems, namely, if and how one can generate particular three-dimensional shapes from thin elastic sheets by mere imposition of a two-dimensional pattern of locally isotropic growth. Not every shape is possible. Several types of obstruction can arise, some of which depend on the sheet thickness. We provide some examples using the axisymmetric form of the problem, which is analytically tractable…
Very thin elastic sheets, even at zero temperature, exhibit nonlinear elastic response by virtue of their dominant bending modes. Their behavior is even richer at finite temperature. Here we use molecular dynamics (MD) to study the vibrations of a thermally fluctuating two-dimensional elastic sheet with one end clamped at its zero-temperature length. We uncover a tilt phase in which the sheet fluctuates about a mean plane inclined with respect to the horizontal, thus breaking reflection symmetry. We determine the phase behavior as a function of the aspect ratio of the sheet and the temperature…
We examine the shape change of a thin disk with an inserted wedge of material when it is pushed against a plane, using analytical, numerical and experimental methods. Such sheets occur in packaging, surgery and nanotechnology. We approximate the sheet as having vanishing strain, so that it takes a conical form in which straight generators converge to a disclination singularity. Then its shape is that which minimizes elastic bending energy alone. Real sheets are expected to approach this limiting shape as their thickness approaches zero. The planar constraint forces a sector of the sheet to buc…
Since the discovery of graphene oxide (GO), the most accessible of the precursors of graphene, this material has been widely studied for applications in science and technology. In this work, we describe a procedure to obtain GO dispersions in water at high concentrations, these highly dehydrated dispersions being in addition fully redispersible by dilution. With the availability of such concentrated samples, it was possible to investigate the structure of hydrated GO sheets in a previously unexplored range of concentrations, and to evidence a structural phase transition. Tentatively applying m…
The existing theory of incompatible elastic sheets uses the deviation of the surface metric from a reference metric to define the strain tensor [Efrati et al., J. Mech. Phys. Solids {\bf 57}, 762 (2009)]. For a class of simple axisymmetric problems we examine an alternative formulation, defining the strain based on deviations of distances (rather than distances squared) from their rest values. While the two formulations converge in the limit of small slopes and in the limit of an incompressible sheet, for other cases they are found not to be equivalent. The alternative formulation offers sever…
Two novel single-period cracks were observed in experiments of cutting a folded sheet with a blunt object and tearing a thin brittle sheet under the guidance of a meterstick. Additionally, we observed a period-doubling crack in the tearing experiment. We cut and tore the sheet in different directions. The experimental results suggested that the anisotropy of the thin sheet played an important role in the formation of these two types of saw-tooth cracks. We demonstrated that the formation of the period-doubling crack was closely correlated with the changing of the contact region between the she…
Thin elastic solids are easily deformed into a myriad of three-dimensional shapes, which may contain sharp localized structures as in a crumpled candy wrapper, or have smooth and diffuse features like the undulating edge of a flower. Anticipating and controlling these morphologies is crucial to a variety of applications involving textiles, synthetic skins, and inflatable structures. Here we show that a "wrinkle-to-crumple" transition, previously observed in specific settings, is a ubiquitous response for confined sheets. This unified picture is borne out of a suite of model experiments on poly…
Using a geometric formalism of elasticity theory we develop a systematic theoretical method for controlling and manipulating the mechanical response of slender solids to external loads. We formally express global mechanical properties associated with non-euclidean thin sheets, and interpret the expressions as inverse problem for designing desired mechanical properties. We show that by wisely designing geometric frustration, extreme mechanical properties can be encoded into a material using accessible experimental techniques. To test the methodology we derive a family of geometries that result …
The localized loading of an elastic sheet floating on a liquid bath occurs at scales from a frog sitting on a lily pad to a volcano supported by the Earth's tectonic plates. The load is supported by a combination of the stresses within the sheet (which may include applied tensions from, for example, surface tension) and the hydrostatic pressure in the liquid. At the same time, the sheet deforms, and may wrinkle, because of the load. We study this problem in terms of the (relatively weak) applied tension and the indentation depth. For small indentation depths, we find that the force--indentatio…
We investigate the deformation of a longitudinally stretched rectangular sheet which is clamped at two opposite boundaries and free otherwise with experiments, numerical analysis and asymptotic analysis of the biharmonic elastic equation governing their planar equilibrium configurations. The displacement field of the sheet is measured by tracking embedded fluorescent tracers with a digital image correlation (DIC) technique. The experiments and numerical finite element analysis (FEA) are found to be in overall good agreement except at the very corners where large deformations occur. We find tha…
A thin fiber or sheet curled into a circular container has a detached region whose shape and force ratios are independent of material properties and container radius. We compute this shape and compare it with experiments. The discrete forces acting at either end of the detached region have a ratio that depends only on the length of the fiber or sheet relative to the circle radius. We calculate this force ratio in three regimes of circle radius.
We compute the stresses in an elastic medium confined in a vertical column, when the material is at the Coulomb threshold everywhere at the walls. Simulations are performed in 2 dimensions using a spring lattice, and in 3 dimensions, using Finite Element Method. The results are compared to the Janssen model and to experimental results for a granular material. The necessity to consider elastic anisotropy to render qualitatively the experimental findings is discussed.
Hydrodynamic forces may significantly affect the motion of polymers. In sheet-like cavities, such as the cell's cytoplasm and microfluidic channels, the hydrodynamic forces are long-range. It is therefore expected that that hydrodynamic interactions will dominate the motion of polymers in sheets and will be manifested by Zimm-like scaling. Quite the opposite, we note here that although the hydrodynamic forces are long-range their overall effect on the motion of polymers vanishes due to the symmetry of the two-dimensional flow. As a result, the predicted scaling of experimental observables such…
We investigate the dissipative mechanisms exhibited by creased material sheets when subjected to mechanical loading, which comes in the form of plasticity and relaxation phenomena within the creases. After demonstrating that plasticity mostly affects the rest angle of the creases, we devise a mapping between this quantity and the macroscopic state of the system that allows us to track its reference configuration along an arbitrary loading path, resulting in a powerful monitoring and design tool for crease-based metamaterials. Furthermore, we show that complex relaxation phenomena, in particula…
We investigate the nucleation, growth, and spatial organization of topological defects with a ribbon shaped elastic sheet which is stretched and twisted. Singularities are found to spontaneously arrange in a triangular lattice in the form of vertices connected by stretched ridges that result in a self-rigidified structure. The vertices are shown to be negative disclinations or e-cones which occur in sheets with negative Gaussian curvature, in contrast with d-cones in sheets with zero-Gaussian curvature. We find the growth of the wrinkled width of the ribbon to be consistent with a far-from-thr…
Wrinkling of stretched elastic sheets is widely observed, and the scaling relations between the amplitude and wavelength of the wrinkles have been proposed by Cerda and Mahadevan. However, the surface effects should be taken into account when the sheet is even thinner. The surface energy was considered in this work, and the discrepancies with the classical theory has been discussed. A dimensionless parameter has been proposed to represent the size-dependence. A method of characterizing mechanical properties of thin film using wrinkles considering surface effects has also been proposed.
Thin rigid sheets floating on a liquid substrate appear, for example, in coatings and surfactant monolayers. Upon uniaxial compression the sheet undergoes transitions from a compressed flat state to a periodic wrinkled pattern to a localized folded pattern. The stability of these states is determined by the in-plane elasticity of the sheet, its bending rigidity, and the hydrostatics of the underlying liquid. Wrinkles and folds, and the wrinkle-to-fold transition, were previously studied for incompressible sheets. In the present work we extend the theory to include finite compressibility. We an…
We investigate the hydroelastic wake created by a perturbation moving at constant speed along a thin elastic sheet floating at the surface of deep water. Using a high-resolution cross-correlation imaging technique, we characterize the waves as a function of the perturbation speed, for different sheet thicknesses. The general theoretical expression for the dispersion relation of hydroelastic waves includes three components: gravity, bending and stretching. The bending modulus and the tension in the sheet are independently measured. Excellent agreement is found between the experimental data and …
We study the interaction between two cracks propagating quasistatically during the tearing of a thin brittle sheet. We show that the cracks attract each other following a path described by a power law resulting from the competition between elastic and fracture energies. The power law exponent (8/11) is in close agreement with experiments. We also show that a second (asymptotic) regime, with an exponent of 9/8, emerges for small distances between the two crack tips due to the finite transverse curvature of the elastic ridge joining them.
We study the deformation of a fluctuating crystalline sheet confined between two flat rigid walls as a simple model for layered solids where bonds among atoms {\it within} the same layer are much stronger than those {\it between} layers. When subjected to sufficiently high loads in an appropriate geometry, these solids deform and fail in unconventional ways. Recent experiments suggest that configurations named {\it ripplocations}, where a layer folds backwards over itself, are involved. These structures are distinct and separated by large free energy barriers from smooth {\it ripples} of the a…
We determine stability boundaries for the wrinkling of highly uni-directionally stretched, finely thin, rectangular elastic sheets. For a given fine thickness and length, a stability boundary here is a curve in the parameter plane, aspect ratio vs. the macroscopic strain; the values on one side of the boundary are associated with a flat, unwrinkled state, while wrinkled configurations correspond to all values on the other. In our recent work we demonstrated the importance of finite elasticity in the membrane part of such a model in order to capture the correct phenomena. Here we present and co…
By reinforcing the interaction energy of the liquid with respect to the surface using total wetting boundary conditions, the response of liquids to mechanical shear stress is stronger and exhibits at sub-millimeter scale elastic properties. This study extends here to liquids with strong electrostatic interactions such as ionic liquids and paramagnetic liquids. We show that it is also possible to identify and measure a non-zero low-frequency shear elasticity at sub-millimeter scale. The observation of mesoscopic elastic properties in liquids generally considered as viscous away from any phase t…
The interaction between elasticity and capillarity is used to produce three dimensional structures, through the wrapping of a liquid droplet by a planar sheet. The final encapsulated 3D shape is controlled by tayloring the initial geometry of the flat membrane. A 2D model shows the evolution of open sheets to closed structures and predicts a critical length scale below which encapsulation cannot occur, which is verified experimentally. This {\it elastocapillary length} is found to depend on the thickness as $h^{3/2}$, a scaling favorable to miniaturization which suggests a new way of mass prod…
We consider the axial compression of a thin sheet wrapped around a rigid cylindrical substrate. In contrast to the wrinkling-to-fold transitions exhibited in similar systems, we find that the sheet always buckles into a single symmetric fold, while periodic solutions are unstable. Upon further compression, the solution breaks symmetry and stabilizes into a recumbent fold. Using linear analysis and numerics, we theoretically predict the buckling force and energy as a function of the compressive displacement. We compare our theory to experiments employing cylindrical neoprene sheets and find rem…
We investigate with experiments the twist induced transverse buckling instabilities of an elastic sheet of length $L$, width $W$, and thickness $t$, that is clamped at two opposite ends while held under a tension $T$. Above a critical tension $T_λ$ and critical twist angle $η_{tr}$, we find that the sheet buckles with a mode number $n \geq 1$ transverse to the axis of twist. Three distinct buckling regimes characterized as clamp-dominated, bendable, and stiff are identified, by introducing a bendability length $L_B$ and a clamp length $L_{C}(<L_B)$. In the stiff regime ($L>L_B$), we find that …
We study pattern formation during tensile deformation of confined viscoelastic layers. The use of a model system (PDMS with different degrees of crosslinking) allows us to go continuously from a viscous liquid to an elastic solid. We observe two distinct regimes of fingering instabilities: a regime called "elastic" with interfacial crack propagation where the fingering wavelength only scales with the film thickness, and a bulk regime called "viscoelastic" where the fingering instability shows a Saffman-Taylor-like behavior. We find good quantitative agreement with theory in both cases and pres…
Recent applications (e.g. active gels and self-assembly of elastic sheets) motivate the need to efficiently simulate the dynamics of thin elastic sheets. We present semi-implicit time stepping algorithms to improve the time step constraints that arise in explicit methods while avoiding much of the complexity of fully-implicit approaches. For a triangular lattice discretization with stretching and bending springs, our semi-implicit approach involves discrete Laplacian and biharmonic operators, and is stable for all time steps in the case of overdamped dynamics. For a more general finite-differe…
Recent studies of elasto-capillary phenomena have triggered interest in a basic variant of the classical Young-Laplace-Dupré (YLD) problem: The capillary interaction between a liquid drop and a thin solid sheet of low bending stiffness. Here, we consider a two-dimensional model where the sheet is subjected to an external tensile load and the drop is characterized by a well-defined Young's contact angle $θ_Y$. Using a combination of numerical, variational, and asymptotic techniques, we discuss wetting as a function of the applied tension. We find that, for wettable surfaces with $0<θ_Y<π/2$, co…
An isolated positive wedge disclination deforms an initially flat elastic sheet into a perfect cone when the sheet is of infinite extent and is elastically inextensible. The latter requires the elastic stretching strains to be vanishingly small. In this paper, rigorous analytical and numerical results are obtained for the disclination induced deformed shape and stress field of a bounded F{ö}ppl-von K{á}rm{á}n elastic sheet with finite extensibility, while emphasising the deviations from the perfect cone solution. In particular, the Gaussian curvature field is no longer localised as a Dirac sin…
The conformation of a long linear polymer dissolved in fluid and exposed to an extensional flow is well-known to exhibit a "coil-stretch" transition, which for sufficiently long chains can lead to bistability. The present work reports computations indicating that an analogous "compact-stretched" transition arises in the dynamics of a thin elastic sheet. Sheets of nominally circular, square or rectangular shape are simulated in planar and biaxial flows using a finite element method for the sheet conformations and a regularized Stokeslet method for the fluid flow. If a neo-Hookean constitutive m…
Investigations of the elastic behavior of bulk elastomers have traditionally proceeded on the basis of classical rubber elasticity, which regards chains as thermally fluctuating but disregards the thermal fluctuations of the cross-links. Here, we consider an incompressible and flat elastomer film of an axisymmetric shape confined between two large hard co-planar substrates, with the axis of the film perpendicular to the substrates. We address the impact that thermal fluctuations of the cross-links have on the free energy of elastic deformation of the system, subject to the requirement that the…
Propagation of a viscous fluid beneath an elastic sheet is controlled by local dynamics at the peeling front, in close analogy with the capillary-driven spreading of drops over a precursor film. Here we identify propagation laws for a generic elastic peeling problem in the distinct limits of peeling by bending and peeling by pulling, and apply our results to the radial spread of a fluid blister over a thin pre-wetting film. For the case of small deformations relative to the sheet thickness, peeling is driven by bending, leading to radial growth as $t^{7/22}$. Experimental results reproduce bot…
Programming the non-uniform growth of a responsive polymer gel has emerged as a powerful tool to shape sheets into prescribed three dimensional shapes. We demonstrate that shapes with zero Gaussian curvature, except at singularities, produced by the growth-induced buckling of a thin elastic sheet are the same as those produced by the Volterra construction of topological defects in which edges of an intrinsically flat surface are identified. With this connection, we study the problem of choosing an optimal pattern of growth for a prescribed developable surface, finding a fundamental trade-off b…
In this paper we present a review on our recent experimental investigations into the phase behavior of the deeply cooled water confined in a nanoporous silica material, MCM-41, with elastic neutron scattering technique. Under such strong confinement, the homogeneous nucleation process of water is avoided, which allows the confined water to keep its liquid state at temperatures and pressures that are inaccessible to the bulk water. By measuring the average density of the confined heavy water, we observe a likely first-order low-density liquid (LDL) to high-density liquid (HDL) transition in the…
Steady progress in the miniaturization of structures and devices has reached a scale where thermal fluctuations become relevant and it is thus important to understand how such fluctuations affect their mechanical stability. Here, we investigate the buckling of thermalized sheets and we demonstrate that thermal fluctuations increase the critical buckling load due to the enhanced scale-dependent bending rigidity for sheets that are much larger than a characteristic thermal length scale. The presented results are universal and apply to a wide range of microscopic sheets. These results are especia…
A thin, elastic sheet floating on the surface of a liquid bath wrinkles when poked at its centre. We study the onset of wrinkling as well as the evolution of the pattern as indentation progresses far beyond the wrinkling threshold. We use tension field theory to describe the macroscopic properties of the deformed film and show that the system passes through a host of different regimes, even while the deflections and strains remain small. We show that the effect of the finite size of the sheet ultimately plays a key role in determining the location of the wrinkle pattern, and obtain scaling rel…
We study the dependence of the fracture surface energy on the pulling velocity for nano-porous polypropylene (PP) sheets to find two components: the static and dynamic ones. We show that these terms can be interpreted respectively as plastoelastic and viscoelastic components, as has been shown for soft polyethylene (PE) foams in a previous work. Considering significant differences in the pore size, volume fraction and Young's modulus of the present PP and previous PE sheets, the present results suggest a universal physical mechanism for fracture of porous polymer sheets. The simple physical in…
The edges of torn plastic sheets and growing leaves often display hierarchical buckling patterns. We show that this complex morphology (i) emerges even in zero strain configurations, and (ii) is driven by a competition between the two principal curvatures, rather than between bending and stretching. We identify the key role of branch-point (or "monkey-saddle") singularities in generating complex wrinkling patterns in isometric immersions, and show how they arise naturally from minimizing the elastic energy.
Numerically simulating deformations in thin elastic sheets is a challenging problem in computational mechanics due to destabilizing compressive stresses that result in wrinkling. Determining the location, structure, and evolution of wrinkles in these problems have important implications in design and is an area of increasing interest in the fields of physics and engineering. In this work, several numerical approaches previously proposed to model equilibrium deformations in thin elastic sheets are compared. These include standard finite element-based static post-buckling approaches as well as a…
The edge of torn elastic sheets and growing leaves often form a hierarchical buckling pattern. Within non-Euclidean plate theory this complex morphology can be understood as low bending energy isometric immersions of hyperbolic Riemannian metrics. With this motivation we study the isometric immersion problem in strip and disk geometries. By finding explicit piecewise smooth solutions of hyperbolic Monge-Ampere equations on a strip, we show there exist periodic isometric immersions of hyperbolic surfaces in the small slope regime. We extend these solutions to exact isometric immersions through …
Inspired by active shape morphing in developing tissues and biomaterials, we investigate two generic mechanochemical models where the deformations of a thin elastic sheet are driven by, and in turn affect, the concentration gradients of a chemical signal. We develop numerical methods to study the coupled elastic deformations and chemical concentration kinetics, and illustrate with computations the formation of different patterns depending on shell thickness, strength of mechanochemical coupling and diffusivity. In the first model, the sheet curvature governs the production of a contractility i…
Thin soft elastic layers serving as joints between relatively rigid bodies may function as sealants, thermal, electrical, or mechanical insulators, bearings, or adhesives. When such a joint is stressed, even though perfect adhesion is maintained, the exposed free meniscus in the thin elastic layer becomes unstable, leading to the formation of spatially periodic digits of air that invade the elastic layer, reminiscent of viscous fingering in a thin fluid layer. How- ever, the elastic instability is reversible and rate-independent, dis- appearing when the joint is unstressed. We use theory, expe…
We investigate the out-of-plane shape morphing capability of single-material elastic sheets with architected cut patterns that result in arrays of tiles connected by flexible hinges. We demonstrate that a non-periodic cut pattern can cause a sheet to buckle into three-dimensional shapes, such as domes or patterns of wrinkles, when pulled at specific boundary points. These global buckling modes are observed in experiments and rationalized by an in-plane kinematic analysis that highlights the role of the geometric frustration arising from non-periodicity. The study focuses on elastic sheets, and…
Confinement of filamentary objects is ubiquitous in numerous biological, medical, and engineering scenarios. Quantitatively determining the mechanical interaction between flexible filaments and surface confinement is particularly challenging due to the unknown contact force induced by elasticity interacting with geometric constraints. Here, we consider a simplified model of confined filamentary object: an elastic curve under surface confinement. Local force and moment balance equation incorporating the role of contact is utilized to derive the contact force exerted by surface on the confined e…
