Dirac-Frenkel variational method with Davydov D2 trial wavefunction is extended by introducing a thermalization algorithm and applied to simulate dynamics of a general open quantum system. The algorithm allows to control temperature variations of a harmonic finite size bath, when in contact with the quantum system. Thermalization of the bath vibrational modes is realised via stochastic scatterings, implemented as a discrete-time Bernoulli process with Poisson statistics. It controls bath temperature by steering vibrational modes' evolution towards their canonical thermal equilibrium. Numerical analysis of the exciton relaxation dynamics in a small molecular cluster reveals that thermalization additionally provides significant calculation speed up due to reduced number of vibrational modes needed to obtain the convergence.
We present a variational formulation of Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory similar to the constrained-search variational formulation of ground-state density-function theory. The formulation is applied to justify the time-dependent Kohn-Sham method. Other promising applications to advance TDDFT are suggested.
In this paper, we present a variational treatment of the linear dependence for a non-orthogonal time-dependent basis set in solving the Schrödinger equation. The method is based on: i) the definition of a linearly independent working space, and ii) a variational construction of the propagator over finite time-steps. The second point allows the method to properly account for changes in the dimensionality of the working space along the time evolution. In particular, the time evolution is represented by a semi-unitary transformation. Tests are done on a quartic double-well potential with Gaussian…
Effects of non-linear coupling between the system and the bath vibrational modes on the system internal conversion dynamics are investigated using the Dirac-Frenkel variational approach with the defined sD2 ansatz. It explicitly accounts for the entangled system electron-vibrational wavepacket states, while the bath quantum harmonic oscillator (QHO) states are expanded in a superposition of coherent states (CS). Using a non-adiabatically coupled three-level model, we show that quadratic system-bath coupling induces non-reversible internal conversion when the bath QHO wavepacket representation …
We generalize the Time-Dependent Variational Principle (TDVP) to dissipative systems using Monte Carlo methods, allowing the application of existing variational classes for pure states, such as Matrix Product States (MPS), to the simulation of Lindblad master equation dynamics. The key step is to use sampling to approximately solve the Fokker-Planck equation derived from the Lindblad generators. An important computational advantage of this method, compared to other variational approaches to mixed state dynamics, is that it is "embarrassingly parallel".
We present a mean-photon-number dependent variational method, which works well in whole coupling regime if the photon energy is dominant over the spin-flipping, to evaluate the properties of the Rabi model for both the ground state and the excited states. For the ground state, it is shown that the previous approximate methods, the generalized rotating-wave approximation (only working well in the strong coupling limit) and the generalized variational method (only working well in the weak coupling limit), can be recovered in the corresponding coupling limits. The key point of our method is to ta…
The geometric measure of entanglement of variational quantum states is studied on the basis of its relation with the mean value of spin. We examine n-qubit quantum states prepared by a variational circuit with a layer formed by the rotational gates and two-qubit controlled phase gates. The variational circuit is a generalization of that used for preparing quantum Generative Adversarial Network states. The entanglement of a qubit with other qubits in the variational quantum states is determined by the angles of rotational gates that act on the qubit and qubits entangled with it by controlled ph…
We extend the time-dependent variational principle to the setting of dissipative dynamics. This provides a locally optimal (in time) approximation to the dynamics of any Lindblad equation within a given variational manifold of mixed states. In contrast to the pure-state setting there is no canonical information geometry for mixed states and this leads to a family of possible trajectories --- one for each information metric. We focus on the case of the operationally motivated family of monotone riemannian metrics and show further, that in the particular case where the variational manifold is gi…
The time-dependent variational principle is used to optimize the linear and nonlinear parameters of Gaussian basis functions to solve the time-dependent Schrodinger equation in 1 and 3 dimensions for a one-body soft Coulomb potential in a laser field. The accuracy is tested comparing the solution to finite difference grid calculations using several examples. The approach is not limited to one particle systems and the example presented for two electrons demonstrates the potential to tackle larger systems using correlated basis functions.
Using a variational approach based on a Lagrangian formulation and Gaussian trial functions, we derive a simple dynamical system that captures the main features of the time-dependent Schrödinger-Newton equations. With little analytical or numerical effort, the model furnishes information on the ground state density and energy eigenvalue, the linear frequencies, as well as the nonlinear long-time behaviour. Our results are in good agreement with those obtained through analytical estimates or numerical simulations of the full Schrödinger-Newton equations.

We have examined the validity of the time-dependent variational approximation (TDVA) to the Gaussian wavepacket method (GWM) for quantum double-well (DW) systems, by using the quasi-exact spectral method (SM). Comparisons between results of wavefunctions, averages of position and momentum, the auto-correlation function, and an uncertainty product calculated by SM and TDVA have been made. It has been shown that a given initial Gaussian wavepacket in SM is quickly deformed at $t > 0$ where a wavepacket cannot be expressed by a {\it single} Gaussian, and that assumptions on averages of higher-ord…
We develop a variational approach to simulating the dynamics of open quantum many-body systems using deep autoregressive neural networks. The parameters of a compressed representation of a mixed quantum state are adapted dynamically according to the Lindblad master equation by employing a time-dependent variational principle. We illustrate our approach by solving the dissipative quantum Heisenberg model in one and two dimensions for up to 40 spins and by applying it to the simulation of confinement dynamics in the presence of dissipation.
The Dirac-Frenkel time-dependent variation is employed to probe the dynamics of the zero temperature sub-Ohmic spin-boson model with strong friction utilizing the Davydov D1 ansatz. It is shown that initial conditions of the phonon bath have considerable influence on the dynamics. Counterintuitively, even in the very strong coupling regime, quantum coherence features still manage to survive under the polarized bath initial condition, while such features are absent under the factorized bath initial condition. In addition, a coherent-incoherent transition is found at a critical coupling strength…
We develop a new algorithm based on the time-dependent variational principle applied to matrix product states to efficiently simulate the real- and imaginary time dynamics for infinite one-dimensional quantum lattice systems. This procedure: (1) is argued to be optimal; (2) does not rely on the Trotter decomposition and thus has no Trotter error; (3) explicitly preserves all symmetries and conservation laws; and (4) has low computational complexity. The algorithm is illustrated using both imaginary time and real-time examples.
We employ the Dirac-Frenkel variational principle and multiple Davydov ansatz to study time-dependent fluorescence spectra of a driven qubit in the weak- to strong qubit-reservoir coupling regimes, where both the Rabi frequency and spontaneous decay rate are comparable to the transition frequency of the qubit. Our method agrees well with the time-local master-equation approach in the weak-coupling regime, and offers a flexible way to compute the spectra from the bosonic dynamics instead of two-time correlation functions. While the perturbative master equation breaks down in the strong-coupling…
We propose an improved scheme to do the time dependent variational principle (TDVP) in finite matrix product states (MPS) for two-dimensional systems or one-dimensional systems with long range interactions. We present a method to represent the time-evolving state in a MPS with its basis enriched by state-averaging with global Krylov vectors. We show that the projection error is significantly reduced so that precise time evolution can still be obtained even if a larger time step is used. Combined with the one-site TDVP, our approach provides a way to dynamically increase the bond dimension whil…
The projection of time-dependent variational principle (TDVP) for matrix product states enables us to perform long-time simulations of one-dimensional quantum systems with the conservation of the total energy and the norm of wave functions. We compare long-time dynamics after a quantum quench simulated by TDVP with those by the exact diagonalization method in order to evaluate the performance of TDVP. We show that in a nonintegrable model the projection of TDVP clearly improves the long-time behaviors of global observables included in the Hamiltonian, such as the kinetic and interaction energi…
We study the relation between the eigenfrequencies of the Bogoliubov excitations of Bose-Einstein condensates, and the eigenvalues of the Jacobian stability matrix in a variational approach which maps the Gross-Pitaevskii equation to a system of equations of motion for the variational parameters. We do this for Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive contact interaction in an external trap, and for a simple model of a self-trapped Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive 1/r interaction. The stationary solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and Bogoliubov excitations are calculated using…
Dynamical chaos has recently been shown to exist in the Gaussian approximation in quantum mechanics and in the self-consistent mean field approach to studying the dynamics of quantum fields. In this study, we first show that any variational approximation to the dynamics of a quantum system based on the Dirac action principle leads to a classical Hamiltonian dynamics for the variational parameters. Since this Hamiltonian is generically nonlinear and nonintegrable, the dynamics thus generated can be chaotic, in distinction to the exact quantum evolution. We then restrict attention to a system of…
Understanding the emergent system-bath correlations in non-Markovian and non-perturbative open systems is a theoretical challenge that has benefited greatly from the application of Matrix Product State (MPS) methods. Here, we propose an autonmously adapative variant of the one-site Time-Dependent-Variational-Principle (1TDVP) method for many-body MPS wave-functions in which the local bond-dimensions can evolve to capture growing entanglement 'on the fly'. We achieve this by efficiently examining the effect of increasing each MPS bond-dimension in advance of each dynamic timestep, resulting in …

The quantum mechanical many-body problem is rarely analytically solvable. One notable exception is the case of two electrons interacting via a Coulomb potential in a uniform magnetic field. The motion is confined to a two-dimensional plane, which is commonly the case in nanodevices. We compare the exact solution with the semiclassical energy spectrum and study the time-dependent dynamics of the system using the time-dependent variational principle.
We systematically extend Bogoliubov theory beyond the mean field approximation of the Bose-Hubbard model in the superfluid phase. Our approach is based on the time dependent variational principle applied to the family of all Gaussian states (i.e. Gaussian TDVP). First, we find the best ground state approximation within our variational class using imaginary time evolution in 1d, 2d and 3d. We benchmark our results by comparing to Bogoliubov theory and DMRG in 1d. Second, we compute the approximate 1- and 2-particle excitation spectrum as eigenvalues of the linearized projected equations of moti…
We introduce time-dependent variational Monte Carlo for continuous-space Bose gases. Our approach is based on the systematic expansion of the many-body wave-function in terms of multi-body correlations and is essentially exact up to adaptive truncation. The method is benchmarked by comparison to exact Bethe-ansatz or existing numerical results for the integrable Lieb-Liniger model. We first show that the many-body wave-function achieves high precision for ground-state properties, including energy and first-order as well as second-order correlation functions. Then, we study the out-of-equilibri…
Many-body approaches to open quantum systems have recently become powerful tools for investigating the detailed role of dissipative environments in diverse non-equilibrium molecular and condensed matter processes. Here, we report the development of an efficient algorithm that utilises a time-dependent variational principle for matrix product states to evolve large system-environment states. By thus capturing all system-environment correlations, we reproduce the highly non-perturbative, quantum-critical dynamics of the zero temperature spin-boson model, and then exploit the many-body informatio…
The Dirac-Frenkel time-dependent variational approach with Davydov Ansätze is a sophisticated, yet efficient technique to obtain an acuurate solution to many-body Schrödinger equations for energy and charge transfer dy- namics in molecular aggregates and light-harvesting complexes. We extend this variational approach to finite temperatures dynamics of the spin-boson model by adopting a Monte Carlo importance sampling method. In or- der to demonstrate the applicability of this approach, we compare real-time quantum dynamics of the spin-boson model calculated with that from numerically exact ite…
Expectation values of physical quantities may accurately be obtained by the evaluation of integrals within Many-Body Quantum mechanics, and these multi-dimensional integrals may be estimated using Monte Carlo methods. In a previous publication it has been shown that for the simplest, most commonly applied strategy in continuum Quantum Monte Carlo, the random error in the resulting estimates is not well controlled. At best the Central Limit theorem is valid in its weakest form, and at worst it is invalid and replaced by an alternative Generalised Central Limit theorem and non-Normal random erro…
Combining the time-dependent variational principle (TDVP) algorithm with the parallelization scheme introduced by Stoudenmire and White for the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), we present the first parallel matrix product state (MPS) algorithm capable of time evolving one-dimensional (1D) quantum lattice systems with long-range interactions. We benchmark the accuracy and performance of the algorithm by simulating quenches in the long-range Ising and XY models. We show that our code scales well up to 32 processes, with parallel efficiencies as high as 86%. Finally, we calculate the …
Switching anisotropic molecules from strongly-absorbing to strongly-amplifying through a transparent state is shown to be possible by application of dc or ac control electric fields without the requirement of the population inversion. It is based on decoupling of the lower-level molecules from the resonant light while the excited ones remain emitting due to their state-dependent alignment. The amplification index may become dependent only on a number of excited molecules and not on the population of the lower state. A suitable class of molecules and applications in optoelectronics, fiberoptics…
We investigate variational principles for the approximation of quantum dynamics that apply for approximation manifolds that do not have complex linear tangent spaces. The first one, dating back to McLachlan (1964) minimizes the residuum of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, while the second one, originating from the lecture notes of Kramer--Saraceno (1981), imposes the stationarity of an action functional. We characterize both principles in terms of metric and a symplectic orthogonality conditions, consider their conservation properties, and derive an elementary a-posteriori error estima…
If a system of flavor-oscillating neutrinos is at high enough densities that neutrino-neutrino coherent forward scatterings are non-negligible, the system becomes a time-dependent many-body problem. An important and open question is whether the flavor evolution is sufficiently described by a mean-field approach or can be strongly affected by correlations arising from two-body interactions in the neutrino Hamiltonian, as measured by nontrivial quantum entanglement. Numerical computations of the time evolution of many-body quantum systems are challenging because the size of the Hilbert space sca…
We propose a method to achieve amplification without population inversion by anisotropic molecules whose orientation by an external electric field is state-dependent. It is based on decoupling of the lower-state molecules from the resonant light while the excited ones remain emitting. The suitable class of molecules is discussed, the equation for the gain factor is derived, and the magnitude of the inversionless amplification is estimated for the typical experimental conditions. Such switching of the sample from absorbing to amplifying via transparent state is shown to be possible both with th…
Spectral properties of the Hamiltonian function which characterizes a trapped ion are investigated. In order to study semiclassical dynamics of trapped ions, coherent state orbits are introduced as sub-manifolds of the quantum state space, with the Kähler structure induced by the transition probability. The time dependent variational principle (TDVP) is applied on coherent states' orbits. The Hamilton equations of motion on Kähler manifolds of the type of classical phase spaces naturally arise. The associated classical Hamiltonian is obtained from the expected values on symplectic coherent sta…
We apply the time-dependent variational principle of Balian-Vénéroni to a system of self-interacting trapped bosons at finite temperature. The method leads to a set of coupled non-linear time dependent equations for the condensate density, the thermal cloud and the anomalous density. We solve numerically these equations in the static case for a harmonic trap. We analyze the various densities as functions of the radial distance and the temperature. We find an overall good qualitative agreement with recent experiments as well as with the results of many theoretical groups. We also discuss the be…
