The study of quantum correlation sets initiated by Tsirelson in the 1980s and originally motivated by questions in the foundations of quantum mechanics has more recently been tied to questions in quantum cryptography, complexity theory, operator space theory, group theory, and more. Synchronous correlation sets introduced in [Paulsen et. al, JFA 2016] are a subclass of correlations that has proven particularly useful to study and arises naturally in applications. We show that any correlation that is almost synchronous, in a natural $\ell_1$ sense, arises from a state and measurement operators that are well-approximated by a convex combination of projective measurements on a maximally entangled state. This extends a result of [Paulsen et. al, JFA 2016] which applies to exactly synchronous correlations. Crucially, the quality of approximation is independent of the dimension of the Hilbert spaces or of the size of the correlation. Our result allows one to reduce the analysis of many classes of nonlocal games, including rigidity properties, to the case of strategies using maximally entangled states which are generally easier to manipulate.
Recently, W. Slofstra proved that the set of quantum correlations is not closed. We prove that the set of synchronous quantum correlations is not closed, which implies his result, by giving an example of a synchronous game that has a perfect quantum approximate strategy but no perfect quantum strategy. We also exhibit a graph for which the quantum independence number and the quantum approximate independence number are different. We prove new characterisations of synchronous quantum approximate correlations and synchronous quantum spatial correlations. We solve the synchronous approximation pro…
We show that Connes' embedding problem is equivalent to the weak Tsirelson problem in the setting of two-outcome synchronous correlation sets. We further show that the extreme points of two-outcome synchronous correlation sets can be realized using a certain class of universal C*-algebras. We examine these algebras in the three-experiment case and verify that the strong and weak Tsirelson problems have affirmative answers in that setting.
We provide a complete geometric description of the set of synchronous quantum correlations for the three experiment two outcome scenario. We show that these correlations form a closed set. Moreover, every correlation in this set can be realized using projection valued measures on a Hilbert space of dimension no more than 16.
We derive a device-independent quantum key distribution protocol based on synchronous correlations and their Bell inequalities. This protocol offers several advantages over other device-independent schemes including symmetry between the two users and no need for preshared randomness. We close a "synchronicity" loophole by showing that an almost synchronous correlation inherits the self-testing property of the associated synchronous correlation. We also pose a new security assumption that closes the "locality" (or "causality") loophole: an unbounded adversary with even a small uncertainty about…
Nonlocal games with synchronous correlations are a natural generalization of functions between two finite sets. In this work we examine analogues of Bell's inequalities for such correlations, and derive a synchronous device-independent quantum key distribution protocol. This protocol has the advantage of symmetry between the two users and self-testing while generating shared secret key without requiring a preshared secret. We show that, unlike general correlations and the CHSH inequality, there can be no quantum Bell violation among synchronous correlations with two measurement settings. Howev…
We study the set of quantum correlations generated by actions on maximally entangled states. We show that such correlations are dense in their own convex hull. As a consequence, we show that these correlations are dense in the set of synchronous quantum correlations. We introduce the concept of corners of correlation sets and show that every local or nonsignalling correlation can be realized as the corner of a synchronous local or nonsignalling correlation. We provide partial results for other correlation sets.
Quantum correlations and fluctuations in the pulsed light produced by a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator below its oscillation threshold
Synchronous correlations provide a class of nonlocal games that behave like functions between finite sets. In this work we examine categories whose morphisms are games with synchronous classical, quantum, or general nonsignaling correlations. In particular, we characterize when morphisms in these categories are monic, epic, sections, or retractions.
To identify which principles characterize quantum correlations, it is essential to understand in which sense this set of correlations differs from that of almost quantum correlations. We solve this problem by invoking the so-called no-restriction hypothesis, an explicit and natural axiom in many reconstructions of quantum theory stating that the set of possible measurements is the dual of the set of states. We prove that, contrary to quantum correlations, no generalised probabilistic theory satisfying the no-restriction hypothesis is able to reproduce the set of almost quantum correlations. Th…
In this paper we study bipartite quantum correlations using techniques from tracial noncommutative polynomial optimization. We construct a hierarchy of semidefinite programming lower bounds on the minimal entanglement dimension of a bipartite correlation. This hierarchy converges to a new parameter: the minimal average entanglement dimension, which measures the amount of entanglement needed to reproduce a quantum correlation when access to shared randomness is free. For synchronous correlations, we show a correspondence between the minimal entanglement dimension and the completely positive sem…

Using the simulation paradigm in information theory, we define notions of quantum hypergraph homomorphisms and quantum hypergraph isomorphisms, and show that they constitute partial orders and equivalence relations, respectively. Specialising to the case where the underlying hypergraphs arise from non-local games, we define notions of quantum non-local game homomorphisms and quantum non-local game isomorphisms, and show that games, isomorphic with respect to a given correlation type, have equal values and asymptotic values relative to this type. We examine a new class of no-signalling correlat…
Ernst Specker considered a particular feature of quantum theory to be especially fundamental, namely that pairwise joint measurability of sharp measurements implies their global joint measurability (https://vimeo.com/52923835). To date, Specker's principle seemed incapable of singling out quantum theory from the space of all general probabilistic theories. In particular, its well-known consequence for experimental statistics, the principle of consistent exclusivity, does not rule out the set of correlations known as almost quantum, which is strictly larger than the set of quantum correlations.…
The characterization of the set of quantum correlations is a problem of fundamental importance in quantum information. The question whether every proper (tight) Bell inequality is violated in Quantum theory is an intriguing one in this regard. Here, we make significant progress in answering this question, by showing that every tight Bell inequality is violated by 'Almost Quantum' correlations, a semi-definite programming relaxation of the set of quantum correlations. As a consequence, we show that many (classes of) Bell inequalities including two-party correlation Bell inequalities and multi-o…
We investigate the ability of correlation measures to witness non-Markovian open quantum system dynamics. It is shown that the mutual information and any entanglement measure between the system and an ancilla do not witness all non-Markovian dynamics. A correlation measure is introduced, and it is proven that, in an enlarged setting with two ancillary systems, this measure detects almost all non-Markovian dynamics, except possibly a zero-measure set of dynamics that is non-bijective in finite time-intervals. Our proof is constructive and provides different initial states detecting the non-Mark…
We study the intrinsic decoherence of coupled harmonic oscillators. The Milburn master equation is solved exactly, and the dynamics of virtual ground state excitations are investigated. The interaction of quantum correlations and virtual excitation was then studied. The following is a summary of our major findings. (i) The damped oscillatory profile of all three quantities is the same. (ii) Ultra-strong coupling combined with huge anisotropy values results in the reemergence of entanglement and steering. (iii) To sustain entanglement and steering, virtual excitations are required. (iv) The qua…
We study the set of almost quantum correlations and their refinements in the simplest tripartite Bell scenario where each party is allowed to perform two dichotomic measurements. In contrast to its bipartite counterpart, we find that there already exist facet Bell inequalities that witness almost quantum correlations beyond quantum theory in this simplest tripartite Bell scenario. Furthermore, we study the relation between the almost quantum set and the hierarchy of supersets to the quantum set due to Navascués-Pironio-Acín (NPA) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 010401 (2007)]. While the former lies betw…
In this paper, we examined a possibility of preservation of a substantially multimode radiation in a single cell of quantum memory. As a light source we considered a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator (SPOPO). As it was shown in [1-4], SPOPO radiation has a large number of the correlated modes making it attractive for the purposes of the quantum communication and computing. We showed that these correlations can be mapped on the longitudinal spin waves of the memory cell and be restored later in the readout light. The efficiencies of the writing and readout depend on the mode st…
Quantum mechanics allows only certain sets of experimental results (or "probabilistic models") for Bell-type quantum non-locality experiments. A derivation of this set from simple physical or information theoretic principles would represent an important step forward in our understanding of quantum mechanics, and this problem has been intensely investigated in recent years. "Macroscopic locality," which requires the recovery of locality in the limit of large numbers of trials, is one of several principles discussed in the literature that place a bound on the set of quantum probabilistic models.…
